You say, "America is an endless obsession" but Iran also has its obsessions. Why do the faithful chant "Death to America" at Friday prayers in Tehran and write it above the doorways? Why do they call us the "Great Satan" over and over again? Seems like Iran is obsessed with us. It explains the widespread concern here over an Iranian nuclear weapon being developed. Of coarse, statements like "Axis of Evil" are not helpful either. I do agree with you that there is way too much emphasis on sex in politics here and not enough obsession with policy details. Its a way for politicians to attack opponents while avoiding critical analysis of their own lack of accomplishment for the people they represent.
