Lahore, Pakistan -- Iran will have a greater stake in promoting stability in the Middle East if it is part of the international system than if it is excluded.
It is becoming increasingly absurd that the world's superpower has no relations with one of the largest countries in the Middle East. Iran is unlikely to ever become the dominant power in the region. There is just too much competition. Israel, with its nuclear weapons and backing from the US, is by far the strongest regional power. Arab states such as Saudi Arabia and Syria would not allow Iran to dominate, either. Iran should be a partner in the various peace processes in the Middle East, not a pariah. Despite the hardline nature of the present Iranian regime, greater cooperation with the West and greater international responsibilities will strengthen civil society in Iran and make the regime more sensitive to upholding human rights. In a globalized world, isolation is dangerous. Engagement is the only possible course.
