China's Resource-Buying Spree

China's on a resource-buying spree, most recently paying US$13 billion for a stake in an Australian mining company. Is this a threat to your nation and its economy? To the world's?

Cristina :

Just a clarification: when I wrote a "Confucian Society" I had in mind one text I read some time ago :
Culture and Economic Development

By Lawrence E. Harrison
December 4th, 2006

"East Asia

The “Confucian” countries (more accurately the countries strongly influenced by Chinese culture, which also embraces, in addition to Confucianism, Taoism, Buddhism, and ancestor worship) all share substantially in the universal culture of progress: education, achievement, work ethic, merit, and frugality are all highly valued in the East Asian societies. Their economic success contradicts Weber’s analysis in The Religion of China in which he asserts that rapid capitalist development is unlikely in China in large measure because of the absence of anything like the Calvinist “tension” caused by uncertainty about being of the “elect.”

Many observers attributed the stagnation of the East Asian economies (Japan excepted) at mid-twentieth century to Confucianism, particularly to the influential role played by the Mandarin literati (Mao a prototype) and the low prestige that attached to economic activity in the Confucian scheme of things. But all that was necessary to release the powerful education/achievement/merit/frugality undercurrent to perform its economic magic was encouragement from the political leadership, in the cases of South Korea and Taiwan stimulated by security concerns. The trigger for the magic in China was Deng Xiaoping’s 1978 pronouncement, “To get rich is glorious,” effectively marking the end of Mao’s Marxist revolution.

Once the encouragement and incentives were in place, the Universal Progress Values drove the economic miracles, much as they had when the Meiji leaders in Japan decided in 1868 to catch up with the West."

Though I have my criticism regarding the scope of this article.

To JRLR:

“Are we up to the challenge or are we already too decadent to even consider that possibility? “ I think so, but it depends on many things and changes in paradigms. However, we must not lose faith in ourselves.

“There ought to be a better way.” There is…always.

“L’Enfer, c’est les autres.”… Sometimes it is we.

I am running short of time, but it has been my intention to approach some points on your well commented piece.

You have touched in one of the fundaments I believe will have to undergo major and daunting challenges of our time: a complete change in our life-style, that is, from a consumerist society to a saving-recycling-innovative one. Innovative in the sense that it will be have to reinvent itself. Here lies the biggest opportunity of all time, of America’s time and why not, of the world’s time all along.

I have watched the video by Thomas Friedman, called The Power of Green (on NYT). He envisioned a role for the US to take on at the start of this millennium. Strangely enough, it is the only thing that the US has solemnly refused even to adhere, not need to say when it comes to lead! I am talking about the climate changes that are a reality and not mere speculation of weird scientists. This video is from April 2007! And today, I just read a column by Bob Herbert (Where is the big idea) on the same NYT!) It was amazing to read this on the same newspaper almost one year later after it had been kick-started by Friedman!

From where I am, it is virtually unconceivable that the US has not taken advantages of this opportunity, has not spotted the opportunity. As if you are observing a dog chasing its own tale. I see this immense change as the answer to you question “Where do you go from here?”

There is an answer, take it! But take it seriously, not with the same mindset that caused you the pains you now suffer. I am serious, very much. Einstein said that we should not seek the solution for a problem using the same reasoning that caused it. Again a Chinese proverb goes like that: “Insanity is doing the same thing in the same way and expecting a different outcome.”

The opportunity is knocking your door. Open it and let in, but be prepared for this opportunity will pose risks, demand courage, and most of all will require a new mindset. Any change is unsettling to the human mind, but it is vital that you take on the challenge as the benefits immensely compensate whatever it might demand.

I just would make on repair in Friedman’s propositions, a remark of mine that, in my opinion, his speech still reflects the still reflects the old(already outdated) American “inconsciente coletivo. What that is and what that means? At a certain point of his talk, he mentions something like that: “to have an idea is to won it” This is the typical US speech, based on proprietorship. Things have changed and despite Friedman’s good deeds he has not grasped that change yet, it seems.
Why I a saying that? All of a sudden, I could claim that any idea that I have
posted here is my propriety…or the Post Global could return to me and say, No! Haven’t you read the guidelines? And so on and so on…it will go endlessly…and why? Because of this unfashionable idea of this is mine, belongs to me and therefore I hold the rights of use and abuse over it.

Examples that this is over? See Microsoft where it is now standing after years and years protecting fiercely his propriety rights? See Google (Don’t do evil) slogan. Look at where Google stands before it is even 10 years on in the market. If US take on this opportunity, it will have to review how it handles it along with global community, in partnership, not a patron-employee relation! That won’t work because the global community simply won’t take that anymore. Full stop. Thus, for me the only little sin by Friedman was this remark that reflects; “Great! Let’s claim that if it is our idea we take lead, we decide, we set, we command the whole process and it will be according to our parameters and inclinations.” If goes on like that, the same mistakes are likely to be repeated and this time with nowhere to go anymore.

When we are living a crisis, it is hard to see clearly, I would better say, it is virtually impossible. It sounds easier to advice and for those in the eye of the storm looking for the others trying to pass a message will be hard…there will interferences of all sorts, cloudy images, dust, sand, rain, and someone screaming outside “how-to” and the other, inside the storm, trying to read lips while grabbing a wood to survive. It is pictorial, but nothing better to put things into context than a picture of what it may look now for you and for me trying to tell you there is a place to go from here and that I do not own this idea, or Friedman does or will ever! That is THE big change, THE big idea, the challenge and the opportunity! As soon as you understand my point sooner you will see the dawn.

Failures are good thing, not all bad, not at all. We learn from them as much as we learn from success, if not more, much more.

I agree with you about all your remarks, for instance, the complexity and dilemmas experienced by the global community, particularly on the new strategic arrangements. Here, I admit we will need talented people placed everywhere around countries. Not America only. It is a task for everybody. That is why China, India, Russia and Brazil and any other emerging nation will have to play seriously and stop gambling on old, past ideologies that are useless as tool to serve the new demands. Certainly, never before in human history, the modern society as we know it today was required to change so much in such a sort time! Not much time left. Better to put our minds and best efforts to work.

Nevertheless, despite all my overtly optimistic nature, I keep my feet firmly on the ground, perhaps because I know human nature all too well, I keep reticent about the way Chinese do business while handling other issues. I have reasons to say that here. I have some reservations.

It is my experience with the human nature and how humans act and react when in powerful positions that sets my alarm on. Chinese and nobody else are different in this situation. Nobody, even myself. No Confucian society is better or more perfect than the one that is not and it reflects only inexperience about the human nature and how it reacts when feeling empowered. This is valid for all.

Dear Set America Free:
I have spoken to Robert Zubrin and read his bestseller ENERGY VICTORY. I think mandated Flex Fuel Vehicles (FFV’s) like they have in Brazil are imperative for the U.S. However, your focus is to narrow! There is a grass roots approach you are neglecting while you are lobbying Congress for mandated FFV’s.
Please, get the after market auto parts manufacturers to produce FFV retrofit kits to be sold at auto parts stores. Joe Sixpack will gladly take it to his local auto mechanic for installation. When the public knows they don’t have to buy a new car to get off of OPEC oil there will be a frenzy of activity. Your efforts to move Congress to mandate FFV’s will be made simpler with this demonstrable public support. Get us a tax credit for retrofitting our cars to motivate the public, too. The Whitehouse may not believe in mandates but they do believe in tax credits. George’s last hurrah could be putting $400 billion/yr. back in our economy instead of giving Joe Sixpack another check.
It is not yet widely known that the public can request FFV carburetion right now when they buy a new car. The 2008 Chrysler Avenger is an example. Chrysler gives a discount if the car is ordered as an FFV but you have to ASK FOR IT! This information is available at: http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/flextech.shtml . Ford, GM, Renault, VW and other manufacturers offer this technology as well. Detroit will move faster if they have competition, so tell the public.
The fuel and distribution networks are available right now also. Please create competition with gasoline by contacting Seagram’s, Anhueser Busch, Gallo, Coors and other distilleries. They have a short term opportunity to steal the market from the oil companies until they wake up. Breweries can sell plain old ordinary alcohol through their retail grocery networks in the same 3 gallon containers now used to sell laundry soap. We don’t have to wait. Joe Sixpack can buy three or four tubs a week and put them in his retrofitted FFV for $20/tank. It’s a great temporary alternative to paying $50/tank for gas. When the oil companies realize they could loose their market, they will be switching one pump at each gas station to methanol very quickly. Lions and Tigers and Bears…free enterprise!
Please do public information commercials explaining these options. That will adjust the public perception of FFV’s and drive the market. It’s crucial! If you sell them they will retrofit!
I HOPE SOMEONE IN YOUR OFFICES IS READING THIS,

ANTI-HATE SPEECH - Conscience is correct. Calling him/her a racist and dismissing the fact that they state is a rather immature reaction on your part, and ratrher silly at that. CHina does, in fact, harvest organs from political prisoners. India permits it's poor to sell organs...and they do, in very large numbers. There are also gangs in India that kidnap people and take organs from people. India has Hindhu sects that practice human sacrifice (Kali, etc.) . Both countries/cultures treat religious minorities horribly. In India, this past Christmas, Hindhu mobs brunt down more than 20 Christian chruches, they murdered Christian families, even sacrificed the minister of one chruch to some Hindhu god. In China, practitioners of Tibetan Buddhism, Mormanism, Feng Sha, and several other religions ARE some of those polticial prisoners who are imprisoneed and have organs harvested. Many of the practices of these two countries are simply
horrific and they are well known. Your sticking your head in the sand and hysterically shouting racism is worse than worthless. As minority, I have been subject to racism all my life and I do not appreciate some silly white liberal tossing that term around when they have nothing worthwhile to controibute or merely want to stick their fingers in their ears and ignore intelligent debate.

Congratulations on your brilliant commented post. It is always I a pleasure to read you and I always learn something. It is worth preparing an answer to your ideas so well put here.

I will have to take some time :) meanwhile, here it goes a Bible's passage that I like a lot:

Luke 12:48

"...From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and to whom they entrusted much, of him they will ask all the more."

Your first paragraph is straight to the point. I wondered that there was something just was not able to be clear about it. You are quite brilliant!

ANTI-HATE SPEECH :

CONSCIENCE-TO-THE-WORLD:

You are a disgrace to all human kinds. Your hatred only shows your ignorance and evil nature. The Nazis were giving the same speech about Jews before waging one of the bloodiest genocides against a group of fellow human beings in history. And they also claimed to be "the conscience to the world".

ANTI-HATE SPEECH :

The first two comments are ridiculously bigoted and hateful. To say that about any other groups of people, whether they are Jews, Blacks, Hispanics, Muslims or Whites, it would constitute a hate speech. But since it was spoken against Chinese, the US media(Washington Post in this case) react with increditable nonchalance.

WHERE IS YOUR OUTRAGE AGAINST SUCH OVERT HATRED AMERICA?

JRLR :

To simply think of asking those two questions requires a fair amount of arrogance. To have the audacity to put them to the public at large only invites the following answer: “Yes, China is a threat to our economy. Don’t those people know that world resources belong to us? China should know its place. Did we not once teach China where it belonged? The sooner China goes back to its semi-colonial status of old the better. The same applies to all those so-called “emerging countries”.”

Now let us get serious. Let us make this clear and blunt.

Nowadays, any country that dares move on the surface of this earth will be perceived as a threat by any country seeking world hegemony, such as the United States of America. All the more so, given this country has grown accustomed to having it all its way with impunity, regardless of basic human rights, international law, Geneva conventions, etc.

Throughout history, such a ruling group—referred to as a “hegemon”— always secretly wished others did not exist, except perhaps as sub-human creatures to be exploited so as to serve, exclusively, its own interests. For the hegemon’s highly regarded mission is to look only after its own (national) interests; at least, that is what its most eminent representatives enjoy repeating. To the hegemon, the entire world, better, the myriad of universes (including parallel ones, it would seem…) only exist, if at all, for its own sake. The hegemon indeed considers itself the center of all that exists, the navel of Being. That is what confers to the hegemon its mythical reality and contributes to the edification of the universal Hegemonic Myth.

Populations living under the spell of the Hegemonic Myth therefore consider the simple fact that others breathe as a threat, the mere fact that they exist, a life and death issue. Sartre expressed brilliantly that antagonistic way of interacting with others when he had his anti-hero state: “Hell is other people (others).” – In so many words: “L’Enfer, c’est les autres.”… If only WE, alone, existed! “Bottom line”, who needs THEM, after all?

Under the Hegemonic Myth, one is bound to come to that conclusion. In our finite world, with a finite amount of resources available, does not the contemporary Hegemonic Myth promote aggressively an absurd model of unsustainable, unlimited growth… for all? At least, that is what the Myth SAYS. Now WE, 5% of the population of the globe, WE, the overdeveloped happy few, the predominantly obese, currently consume (and consider it not only “normal” but “legitimate” to consume!) 30% of global world resources…

Meanwhile, the rising billions have begun to make their presence felt in an unprecedented way. As a consequence, we have been reacting, lately, as though we had suddenly realized we were not alone in this world. The Malthusians among us have suddenly discovered that even with drastic birth control measures having been taken in countries like China, we still are billions, and each and every one of us is as entitled as the next person to have its legitimate share of world resources. Sad, but true, latest news is: neither God nor the world is American.

So where do we go from here?

If only China, 20% of humanity, now wants and is in the process of acquiring its share of world resources, proportionately to its weight and importance in this world, it follows that at the US rate, China is now entitled to claim for itself 120% of this earth’s resources. Not to mention that India, Russia, Brazil, and others, on every continent, are entitled to their fair share too, and are not about to conclude prematurely that they ought not to claim it, but agree, instead, to leave it to US…

I am not being facetious. This is the fundamental dilemma we are facing. Complex it is; complicated, it is not. So, again, where do we go from here?

We, who claim to lead this world, WE, the obscenely overdeveloped, are the problem; not only are we the source of our own problems, we are the major source of the world’s. The fact that most of us do not even seem to suspect that we are the problem, only confirms how hopelessly we are it. So much so that we still cannot even provide any adequate economic model for world development leading to global survival, let alone to global prosperity.

Anatole Kaletsky wrote, recently: we are witnessing “a decisive shift in the centre of gravity of the world economy towards Asia after five centuries of financial, economic and therefore political dominance by Europe and America.” (“The London Times” online, January 17, 2008)

This is no small change! So where do we go from here?

The world has never seen the haves share willingly with the have-nots. Already, innumerable books and articles have appeared, and more keep coming out, their impotent authors, for lack of imagination and of a better "solution" to world affairs, predicting war with China (that long awaited “WWIII”!), sometime within the next five to fifteen years.

Unimpressed, the billions keep on rising, Learn languages, go visit, investigate, read, study, reflect and see for yourselves! With an impressively healthy appetite, they are already sitting at the human family table. To the rising billions, prosperity first means moving away from destructive need, gaining access to a truly human mode of living, having at last the possibility of developing one’s full human potential, and ultimately reaching human fulfilment in one’s lifetime. That is what the rising billions want, if not for themselves, at the very least for their children.

But they will do better than that… They will soon be telling us what we shall eat, drink, wear, drive, watch, etc., what we shall learn and who will be teaching us, where we shall travel and where we shall go for medical treatment, where we shall retire and possibly die… in fact what the world’s future will be, and in what languages all this will take place.

Isn’t all that enough to show that while we are bogged down, as we are, in ruinous wars we cannot possibly “win”, with one third to one half of our veterans back home suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, with our economy in shambles… isn’t all that enough to show that we are experiencing an acute crisis of leadership?

The prospect of prosperity for those rising billions calls for us to develop a renewed world view, and to discover in that process unknown ways of thinking and of acting in our lives; for it is a new world that is now emerging, at an accelerating pace. Like it or not, want it or not, those lagging behind are already rushing to follow suit behind the fast leaders, those models who are hurrying up, ahead, impatient as they are, on that new Long (Forced) March, to be at the forefront of modernity, in the early twenty first century.

Technology may come to our rescue to some degree, but it is unlikely to provide us soon enough with what we need to alleviate all those gigantic problems we have left unattended for too long already. Above all, technology will not solve the fundamental problem, which is nothing short of us, the happy few, having to share the world resources like never before, in the history of mankind, with the rising billions.

It is my opinion that the more we resist inevitable change on such vital issues, the more deeply we shall suffer, as the pain grows. Already, the planet is giving us unmistakable signs it will not tolerate our nonsense much longer. “Mother” Earth has no feelings. Should some of us prefer to avoid having to learn the way dinosaurs and fossils have learned, i.e. the hard way, it is high time they think out what is the way to our collective future.

Are we up to the challenge or are we already too decadent to even consider that possibility?

We are billions at the human family table… and assuming someone survives a World War III, the survivor is likely to be Chinese: a new Peking man, Sinanthropus pekinensis…Knows how it’s done; has been through it before.

There ought to be a better way.

Energy and Knowledge I wrote another on Miriam Leitao's column when she talked about "Pastiology" a possible neologism for Latin America.

Some time ago, I forgot exactly when, "The Economist" wrote about a future Knowledge Economy. It seems that at the time of this article, it was not so evident how natural resources could have become so decisive as well. Then I added the Energy to the equation.

I am not concerned with lack of brilliant minds. We should not underestimate our capacities! That is the way you start losing.

Since China is the subject, why not take on its arms and play with them?

“When written in Chinese, the word ''crisis'' is composed of two characters -- one represents danger, and the other represents opportunity.”

The question was interestingly posed. Its wording is quite a piece as it looks set to be aimed at something else than simply what is seems to be asking...

How it affects my country? difficult to answer that question. It is to early to make a sound comment. Honestly speaking. US has many has many things I dont like and even disagree with, but at least they are a lot more predictable than the Chinese. When they play you sort of know what outcome you should expect. Not with Chinese! It is hard to welcome someone doing business the way they do because their real reasons are as veiled as the America's might be, if not more. Make no mistake, Chinese are no better than US...nor worst... Give it some time.

I think it is to early to assess this question in such an impromptu manner. However, It is easy to predict that natural resources are the next nations' power asset, although one should always be reminded that natural resources are finite and their mismanagement may have a dear cost that the planet cannot afford to pay anymore.

So China may indeed speak softly , may have the chequebook...but they arrived at the end of the party an no money (no matter how much) will buy the fun again at zero costs.

How that affects Brazil? Difficult to say as this stage as this country is rich in natural resources and also cited as one of the so-called BRIC. Vale is also in the game, thought the Brazilian government fears losing control on it and Brazil may ended up losing the whole match because of that...as I said: too early. A game to be fully played yet. This is just a heating up of the team. Make your bets. I've made mine but I am holding it for now.

People are using Christmas gift cars to buy groceries. One in five Iraq veteran's in unemployed and half of them that have found work do so for minimum wages. Nearly half of U.S engineers and computer programmers cannot find work. 90% of new engineering hires are Chinese and Indian nationals, here on the temporary H1-B visa, working 12 hour days, six and seven days a week, virtual indentured servants. Our debt to China and India and Japan and Arab oil exporters is growing more than five times faster than our economy. What's wrong with this picture? It's the the brave new world of "free trade" where American businesses ship our jobs, our technology, our production capacity offshore to what will certainly be our future enemies. Everyone seems to understand ll of this, the facts and figures are well know, so why are we continuing down this path to national and personal suicide. Where is the national debate about ending "free trade"? With all of the damage so self evident, why are the political candidates from BOTH parties blathering about growing our way out of the current economic mess via MORE globalization?

nanne :

China's resource thirst is in part driven by the western thirst for cheap goods produced by cheap Chinese labour. The question of who is responsible for what is, as always, difficult to answer. The question what we can do about it is, as often, a different issue.

The Chinese thirst for resources is driven by industries that are very inefficient in their use of resources. Continental Europe and Japan, which still care about their industry, have long been driving policies to improve resource efficiency. The Anglo-American world, insofar as it still has industry, is lagging behind -- because it only wishes to consider economic efficiency, and expects the market to take care of that itself.

Most currently used resources, however, are finite, and their price will only keep going up -- regardless of what investment and technological improvements there are in extraction. So we need to reduce demand, through fostering substitutes that are renewable, improving efficiency, and increasing re-use and recycling.

China's on a resource buying spree. Is this a threat to your nation and its economy? The world's?

Excuse me for my ignorance, but I have a lot of questions concerning this matter. What exactly would occur if all the nations in the world would imitate the most frugal of great powers in the world let alone a wasteful power such as the U.S.? Can the technology we have now sustain all the billions striving for a high standard of life? Will we not see a competition for resources in the future that puts political, religious, etc. conflicts in a subordinate position? We have the U.S. caught up in the Islamic world and in a war against Islamic terror, but will the future bring four, five and six-way conflicts between the U.S., E.U., Russia, China, India and the Islamic world? And what about all the other nations?

It seems somehow we all believe there will be some sort of technological solution to the problem--or is our current technology already capable of raising the standard of living of all in the world? Or do we need to innovate but oil companies, etc. are preventing innovation to make a profit? With this last question in mind, is the profit making motive which prevents certain necessary forms of innovation responsible for bringing us to the brink of a true world war 3 which will be a fight over resources?

Imagine a world in which virtually everyone is becoming educated--a world in which everything is in place for everyone to just jump to a high standard, high technology civilization such as exists in the greatest powers--which is precisely great power--yet all this high technology and all these educated people are still so short of a true technique and mindset which can sustain billions upon planet earth.

I want some data. Calculations. Parameters. So far as I can tell we need to drastically reduce the earth's population--not grow horizontally. We need to grow vertically into technological innovation and this calls for great minds. It seems finally that to have a civilization globally which can sustain billions we need these billions to be of high caliber intellect. In other words we face something of an awful paradox: we want to keep population growing and we want technology to sustain billions but the technology to do such can only come from great minds, and if the technology is not forthcoming we have to curtail the earth's population. In other words we can safely grow only if we are transforming ourselves--becoming of increasingly higher intellect--to remain ahead of the problems which come with growth. Population increase of the human race an error unless the population is transforming, evolving at a faster rate than population increase (put that down mathematically as an axiom, superimpose it in on history so far and extrapolate).

I really want a detailed discussion of this problem in publications. No political nonsense. No ideology. No matter how the media wants to represent the current global situation, it seems the true looming conflict is one of the powers in the world shooting roots (as if plants) underneath the ground and encroaching on each other's territory all for the sake of sustaining our current modern civilization. Conflict seems inevitable (superimpose models from plant biology on current global situation).

But really, I plead ignorance in this discussion. We hear of such things as global warming, etc.--sorts of problems--but no real discussion of what I have been concerned with here. Maybe I am being concerned with nothing. Certainly I have no data to make an intuitive let alone exact estimate. I just go by feelings here.

But postglobal has posed a hell of a question. I just wish it would be really examined and followed up in publications so we all can really understand what we have at stake. But if my analysis is correct we can easily understand why it would be next to impossible to make such a thing public.

The population of the world must be drastically reduced unless the people are of such caliber to be able to spread, grow, without harm to the environment?

A science fictional contemplation has now come to me: what exactly would the human race have to become to grow virtually indefinitely--not worry about population growth--without harming the environment? What type of being would that be? If such a type of being cannot be contemplated then of course there must be necessary limits to growth.

But what civilization today thinks of necessary limits to growth?

CHERVA :

A CIA agent selling national information to other countries in the black market could be consider a national threat. The economic expansion of one country, I doubt.
China has been investing billions of dollars not only in the US, but also in Asia, Africa, Oceania and Latin America.
From a less developed country perspective I would say is a benefit more than a threat. Chinese foreign investments are anything but good in these countries, it creates new jobs, better credits for national banks, and mostly a tighter competition with American and European companies.

The US stood up from the rest of the world from a business perspective during the XX Century, being it's whole purpose to "create business". Maybe it's time to recreate that same sentiment and adapt it to today's time.

What's wrong with that ???

Americans are buying crazy even they don't have the cash - just using their credits.

Americans need to work harder, demand less and complain less to make more money.

It's a free market.

Susenjit Guha :

It is expected that China will go wherever and whenever there are resources to be tapped.
Caring a fig for world opinion, the Chinese--- hungry for energy and resources--- are prepared to do business with despots, mass murderers and dictators pilloried by the world community for gross human rights violation.
Manmar, Zimbabwe, Sudan, Ethopia are places with ample resouces desperately in need by the growing Chinese economy. And they belive in dealing directly with the dictators which assures them unimpeded supply. It does not bother their conscience if the majority of the population in the resource supplying nation are left out of the economic benefits.
It is a matter of concern that despots will get fatter and richer and continue to terrorise their countrymen.
And if China goes on a buying spree, the best way to tackle is to make better products at cheaper prices and try to impress upon the market that Chinese products are cheap but shoddy.
It is easier said than done. Cheap Chinese production implies cheap labour which again is not always available after taking care of proper workers rights and payscales. It is possible for China to flout norms which responsible democracies will never think of.
It is indeed a worry if Chinese investments and money comes in at the cost of democratic institutions and ethics.

It is better to the world that china buying the resources, not capturing and plundering like Europe and America in the islamic world.

Yousuf Hashmi :

This is just a ntural outcome of China's strong and growing economy.

Such deals are very common. Not long ago when Japan economy was booming then they were buying every thing in US. such contracts i think will not threat the local economy but in fact provide additional fuel to kick of the economy.

when u compare the deal of china with microsoft buying yahoo every body will be puzzled. China is making a wise investment where as the US giant just wasting the money to topple its competititors.and of course making investment in a virtual commodity

And more over only today you will see the news that US making a heavy investment in the war. how can this investment will pay off

buying resources is wise but china also must take care that a time may come when the nations will nationalise their resources

Salamon :

This question reminds us of the xenophobia as a driving force within the USA's boomer generation.

Did anywhere in the USA media any question arose when the USA was buying/subjugating the world's economy til the 1980 [since then the USA is deeper and deeper in dodoland with approximately 43 trillion dollar debt as per the Comptroller of the USA].

What the USA press does not want to admit that the policies they backed for the last 30 years or so has backfired on nation. Profiligate spending by the populus without savings. Astronomical amounts spent on wars and war equipment neither of which adds one single iota to the well being of the nation, rather it is a major part of consuption of deminishing resources for no material benefit.

The panel should rejoice that someone is still investing, when the USA econopmy is in flames due to media backing of wars [IRaq, Afganistan, Somalia, Western Africa] and their love affair of making/amassing indescribable wealth in dollar terms, when the dollar is falling in value by the day.

It would serve USA far more if the panelist would pose questions on foreign affairs, requesting input to raise the USA's stature economically, politically and morally; at the present, all these three issues are constantly degraded by the efforts of warmongering B ush and his suppport group, the support group which included mr. David Igantius.

No, it is no problem that Chaina is investing its hard earned cash, neither is it a problem that Russia supplies most energy to EU. It is a problem that some economists still did not face the facts that resources are limited on Spaceship Earth, and that there is a limit on how high standard of living the median population can attain. To reach this point, some nation's standards will have to fall, or at least be less wasteful, while other nations will try to reach new plateaus.
