Dear Candidates

The U.S. starts to choose a president this week. If you could send the candidates one message, what would it be?

Stop terrorism instead of promoting it.

Interesting how those right of center speak to their fellow citizens (not the candidates) as though their fellow citizens are all Democrats. Of whom would I be writing? Well,......MEI, V vMeter, and Ron S. come to mind.

Mr. Brasil :

Eu diria para os candidatos não deixarem mais a Amazônia ser desmatada. A coisa aqui tá feia, meus irmãos americanos do norte.

levant- your energy seems a little scattered today-

new york is a little grey bordering on hopes of yellowish today

hi bob-
im an independent and i just downloaded a voter registration form to change to democrat so i can vote in the primary. so you certainly have that right.
remember when bill got that several 100 ( i think or something like that) dollar haircut when he first got into office i believe?
($200, ah the power of the internet, instant gratification)

this is a stupid article but kind of funny-

http://wonkette.com/politics/john-edwards/john-edwards-twice-as-gay-as-bill-clinton-253114.php

i never did much care about the sex life of bill-
his personal compulsions didnt seem to affect his governing abilities too much (but how would i know?)

i didnt know anything about haircuts for john edwards though-

im thinking about who will be vice president
but it aint over til its over

BobL-VA :

Victoria,

I start with the premise that the office of the President is broken. Bill Clinton created a degree of skepticism that wasn't healthy. Bush/Cheney went on cram a myopic hyper-partisan conservative agenda down the throats of all Americans and it's been a disaster. Along the way concepts like truth, integrity and the rule of law have been shredded. The end result has been as much as we want to be proud of our leaders they have put us in a position where we simply don't trust them anymore.

It's this skepticism that has fueled the Obama campaign. You are absolutely right about him running on change. If I was his handlers I'd run on the same thing. "Washington is broken, which it is, and America needs sweeping change to right he ship." You are also right on the point this sweeping change is ambiguous at best. He's heavy on rhetoric and light on an agenda for this change. His latest statements about bi-partisanship made me cringe. I heard the same basic words from Bush 8 years ago. "I'm a uniter, not a divider." Well, he proved without any doubt he never had any intention of uniting anything with the possible exception of his detractors. I assume you will see a lot more of Hillary is the establishment and therefore can't be trusted out of the Obama camp. What else can he possibly run on?

Hillary on the other hand has to paint herself as something different then her husband or the Bushes. This is a tough sell. Her strengths are she's extremely bright, certainly has a passion for politics, spent 8 years in the White House, 8 years as a US Senator, has built an awesome political machine which is necessary to go the distance in a grueling race for the nomination and most importantly would govern from the center. In this regard she is very much like her husband. All she really needs to do is prove to me she has more moral fiber then the man she is married to get my vote. I don't want another president who can't tell the truth when it's not convienent for them.

I also have a very hard time taking John Edwards seriously. The working man's candidate is anything but that. I work for a living and I can honestly say I don't spend $400 on haircuts in 3 years. It may be petty, but I can't get the over the top cost of haircuts out of my mind. Especially, when one is talking about the working classes. I found this incredibly stupid.

As for the republicans I agree with you also. The press will try to make it interesting, but it really won't be that interesting. Bush/Cheney broke the office too bad for a republican to be a serious contender. Independents will overwhelmingly vote democrat in this next election. Also, after 8 years of Bush I don't know a democrat who would even consider voting for another republican no matter how much they dislike either Clinton or Obama. While my die hard republican friends loved the first 6 years of Bush doing anything he wanted no one else did. It has left such a bad taste in the majority of voters mouths that a republican running for presidency this time around can only hope the democratic nominee has a heart attack and dies a few days before the election. Even then I doubt a republican could win.

VICTORIA :

bob- i think that is the thing that makes it all the more brave and risk-taking
but youre right- it takes the whole spine-

now i havent been a hillary fan at all- elsewhere though i blogged that i was impressed anew with her whe i saw her speak to an audience for 2 hours in iowa-
she asnwered every question, and what got my flagging (non-existent last week) attention was her follow up to her answers-
every answer was followed by the statment- "and here is how i'll do it", followed by real actual plans-

i saw the old fight in her-

ive been lulled by the pundits- (and frankly, somewhat sympathetic to her only because she was getting beat up so badly by msnbc)

another interestin gmoment was the cheek pay and hug with chris matthews

it resonated with me because i thought to myself, feminine approaches are more subtle-

and it seemed, quite disarming to chris who is not easily disarmed-

ive liked jon mccain for a long time for his honesty-
however- constant references to islamic extremists and terrorists frankly, chills me-
plus his dogged loyalty to a party that has not exactly stood behind him- well-

obama i havent warmed to-
i cant figure out what the change is hes going to effect, am not a big fan of the stentorian from the pulpit preacher kind of emotional appeals, and desire more substance over style
obama seems to have the style but its too vague for me

ive liked edwards all along- hes got the populist kick the big guys in the pants contrarian anti-establishment thing down

republicans in general just are not going to win, so i wont even comment on them

but itll keep tom young for the next few years-

he can give us some great rants

HELLO FELLOW AMERICANS!

The U.S more than ever does need a most resourceful, wise, and long vision and super patriotic andl loyal to the nation leader!
In other words, all American citizens cannot one more time to vote wrongly a president that behaved as an amateur leader and never have a good and resourceful team or think-tanking group to develop all valuable strategies to help the nation as a ship moving in the treacherous seas!

the leader of the U.S must be a ultra-wise and experienced captain to navigate the U.S.A ship in the sea full with devils like China, Russia, muslim terrorists, world-troublemakers, etc!

I wish all Americans must be ultra-precisely to select a new president for the nation! therefore, never let your mind be distured by male, female, black, white, yellow, brown, green colors! but the only thing you must be reminded is to select a ultrawise, ultra-patriotic, ultra-dedicated, ultra-loyal characteristics of a U.S presidential candidate to seat this individual in the Whitehouse to help our nation to continue to be the greatest nation in the world in all aspects!
THIS IS THE ONLY THING WE MUST DO AND NOTHING ELSE BEFORE TO COME HOME AND TAKE A DEEP BREATH AND WALK OUR DOGS FOR A NEW DAY FOR ALL AMERICANS !
To hand the nation to a hero and patriot is much safr than to hand the nation to a presidential opportunistic candidate!
Finally, we must think very very carefully to vote at this time! due to the nation does need a superman or superpresident to lead the nation out of all kinds of difficulties!

Thanks to all.

Victoria,

As much as I applaud Kucinich for calling for impeachment he's still only a fragment of a vertabrae. When 250 representatives call for his impeachment then you have a backbone. I'm aware a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step, but you are still a thousand miles away less one step.

Frankly, as much as I agree with McGovern that Bush/Cheney are guilty of impeachable offenses I don't think in our world of hyper-partisan politics it's realistic today. I will be sorely disappointed if the dems sweep the presidency and congress they don't formally investigate Bush/Cheney and bring indictments against both of them after they leave office.

WHY IS IT NECESSARY TO READ COMMENTS MADE BY MERRILL LYNCH IN THE DAILY TELEGRAPH (OF ENGLAND) THAT THE UNITED STATES IS IN A RECESSION? THIS QUESTION MAY HAVE NO RELEVANCE TO THIS PARTICULAR SITE BUT WHY ARE THE INDIVIDUALS POTENTIALLY REPRESENTING THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY CONTINUING TO PLAY THEIR SILLY VERBAL GAMES, WHEN THE GENERAL POPULOUS KNOWS THAT THE COUNTRY IS IN SEVERE TROUBLE. WE SEE THAT CLINTON IS TEARFUL AT HER FALL IN POPULARITY AND THAT BRITANY SPEARS IS IN REHAB. WHO CARES? ARE WE ENTERTAINING OURSELVES TO DEATH? DO WE ACTUALLY CARE, OR HAS OUR CREDIT CARD BEEN ABLE TO KEEP US AFLOAT SO FAR AND AS LONG AS THAT HOLDS UP, WHY WORRY? THE FABRIC OF THE UNITED STATES IS SO ERRODED THAT IT WILL TAKE MANY YEARS TO RE-ESTABLISH THE GOALS AND IDEALS OF WHAT WAS A MONUMENTALY IMPORTANT COUNTRY. SADLY, IT MAY NEVER HAPPEN. BUSH AND CHENEY ARE INDIVIDUALLY STUPID AND DANGEROUS. THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN IMPEACHED BY NOW IF THE DEMOCRATS HADN'T PLAYED FOR POSITION IN THE NEVER-ENDING ELECTION FIASCO. BUT WHY WORRY - THE SUPERBOWL IS HERE, THE BEER IS FLOWING, LET'S ALL BE CARRIED AWAY ON A WAVE OF VAPOROUS FOOLISHNESS AND LET THE AMERICAN DREAM BE A FOND MEMORY FOR THOSE WHO THINK THEY KNOW WHAT THAT IS, WHILE THE COUNTRY GOES TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER.

BobL-VA :

Mike,

Lighten up. Has humor, like competence and truthfulness, also taken a leave of absence under the Bush Administration?

I'm all for a good political discussion where the merits of an argument actually have meaning. However, these types of arguments have been sorely lacking in the last eight years. Yes, I blame Bush/Cheney for this. They have exhibited no interest in hearing any point of view that hasn't supported their own.

Hopefully, whoever the next president is, republican or democrat, we'll go back to having political debates over issues that effect all of us. Until then we just have to live with an administration that has shown utter contempt for anyone who doesn't agree with them. Hmmmm..., maybe that's why their approval ratings are so low.

McGovern was right. The creeps should be impeached. Unfortunately, there is no backbone to do this today.

It is my suggestion that the Washington Post consider printing the 'Preamble to the US Constitution in a box above the dateline, everyday,

Right, there should only be liberal arguments because liberal arguments are the only correct ones.

Thanks for the stimulating rebuttal. I thought you "tolerant" liberals wanted to hear multiple points of view. Bull. You just want an echo chamber of other liberal partisans who hold the same narrow views as yourself.

Why are liberals afraid of multiple viewpoints? Becaue most of them are ignorant partisans.

(Tuberculosis imported from India to the U.S)

Hello American fellows:

These dangerous problems all future presidential candidates must look into to find best solutions to solve in order to be a chosen president fo the next time as:

1/ The U.S has imported tuberculosis and super TB from other nation such as India! this is the great threat to all Americans' health! This problem must be stopped ASAP!

2/ The U.S has imported Chinese spies in the forms of students, educators, business persons, technologists and scientists to devastate all technological environments and industrial institutions in the U.S. . This problem is extremely harmful to the nation! a good and wise presidential candidate must be abe to figure out ways to solve this extremely dangerous silent problem in the nation and in all other friendly allies worldwide!

3/ The U.S has lost valuable technological ground to chinese foe such as manufacturing field this is very worst mistake that U.S industries have fed treacherous communist chinese, china to exploit U.S strenght to build up military industries and making more money to buy weapons from Russia to do harm to the U.S.A and all other nations as well!
This super dangerous mistake that have endangered this nation and all world nations as seen!
A valuable future U.S president must have solid and long vision to deal with this problem if wanted to become a reliable leader with good plans to rescue this nation and the world as well!

I WISH TO SEND THESE CONCERNS TO ALL PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES IN THE U.S AND ALL U.S LAWMAKERS AS WELL TO THINK MORE SOLIDLY, AND WISELY TO DEAL WITH THE VERY DANGEROUS CHINA AND RUSSIA AS WELL!

Mike,

You wrote,

"Why does the Post only choose liberal pundits? All four responses to the question were Bush and/or GOP bashing."

Well, the funny answer is they want to have an intelligent debate. However, as the days go by it's harder and harder to find anyone who supports Bush so he's easy "prey."

Bush bashing has become a sport 6th graders can particpate in with their parents. However, as much as I engage in Bush bashing if you go back to my earlier post in this question you will see I specifically said a new president will face undoing the damage done in the last 16 years. (That includes Clinton) It's not all about bashing Bush no matter how much fun that is. It has everything to do with restoring some respectability to arguably the most powerful office on this planet. When Clinton said he wasn't have sex with that woman, he was. When Bush opened his mouth and said anything, it was the opposite. There is a credibility problem with the office today that needs someone with enough moral character to tell the truth regardless of the consequences.

Anyway, instead of whining about liberals try writing an intelligent conservative piece for us to read.

Sorry about that, Shiveh. As that article was at the top of the front page of the NYT, this morning, and with a telling picture right in the middle, I thought the general reference would suffice. I understand it is now available at:

Please note that, as it says at the beginning, "This article will appear in this Sunday's issue of the magazine." Could that explain why it was moved and has become more difficult to reach, on Saturday?...

Anyhow, hope you find it interesting enough...

Sir/Madam

Sorry to bother you with this, lady and gentlemen... but after sending you that ONE (and only) message in an official capacity, yesterday, I find this, today... which gives me pause.

I have concluded that as an honest citizen, I ought to bring this matter to your attention urgently.

Can You Count On These Machines?
By CLIVE THOMPSON

"After the 2000 election, counties rushed to buy computerized voting machines. It turns out that these may cause problems worse than hanging chads."

...

"As the primaries start in New Hampshire this week and roll on through the next few months, the erratic behavior of voting technology will once again find itself under a microscope. In the last three election cycles, touch-screen machines have become one of the most mysterious and divisive elements in modern electoral politics. Introduced after the 2000 hanging-chad debacle, the machines were originally intended to add clarity to election results. But in hundreds of instances, the result has been precisely the opposite: they fail unpredictably, and in extremely strange ways; voters report that their choices “flip” from one candidate to another before their eyes; machines crash or begin to count backward; votes simply vanish. (In the 80-person town of Waldenburg, Ark., touch-screen machines tallied zero votes for one mayoral candidate in 2006 — even though he’s pretty sure he voted for himself.) Most famously, in the November 2006 Congressional election in Sarasota, Fla., touch-screen machines recorded an 18,000-person “undervote” for a race decided by fewer than 400 votes..." ***

Did you read that article?

Will you read that article? (only 10 pages)

At first sight, do you consider this a source of concern?

What do you suggest be done about this BEFORE this election "of the people, by the people, for the people"?

Do you believe it is still worth our while voting, or should we just abstain and flatly refuse to play that game any longer?

Looking forward to the media reporting on your conclusions.

I remain, etc. etc. etc....

As a free country, our Presidents are inundated with opinions and pushed through influence to protect the special interests.

Party loyalty is not the more important characteristics of Presidents. We need a person who keeps the best and true interests of America in the forefront of choices made.

The world's politics are in the beginning of a spiral that could easily lead to destruction and death never before seen. No President can ever again protect special interests. We have moved into a decade of fast moving reactions. The world stage is filled by far too many despots.

Dear Future President,

I think it's time to recognize that religion is medieval and misguided.

I hope that you will appoint judges who are bright enough to understand the law, and not developmentally disabled to the extent that their thinking is based on fairy tales about Jesus and other children's stories.

I hope that you will never arrive at a decision after you "pray for guidance." I hope that you will never quote from the Bible during political speeches. I hope you will never use the phrase "faith-based initiative."

Most of all, I hope that you will not pander to the ignorant Christian right-wing. They are holding America back, and they need to understand that their brand of hatred and stupidity is not welcome in our political discourse. Even more important, they are impeding the progress of humankind as it continues, slowly but surely, to emerge from the Cave.

America needs to restore its time-honored position as the world's engine of economic growth. It needs to be seen again as a visionary power that helps people everywhere -- but particularly in developing countries -- bring out the best in themselves in order to promote social and economic progress in their nations. The new American president needs to understand that in an age of galloping globalization, collaboration with states of all political and ideological persuasions is a necessity. Morality and good governance may be universal values, but political systems need to be customized for individual cultures and societies.

As a human race, we are facing great dangers, from global warming, economic instability, threat of terrorism, diseases, etc.

These problems are bigger than any man's vision.

My greatest wish is for our leaders to encourage and promote a day of prayer--one day, when we collectively, all come together, and sit for a few minutes, and pray for help, guidance, wisdom, and strength.

This should involve the media, and as many people around the world that want to participate. Imagine millions of us coming together and praying at the same time. Imagine what kind of force this can create on earth!

I believe in the power of collective will, of collective prayer.

We should have at least one day like this--just a few minutes.

We can start to make this a routine practice.

Participation is not mandetory; freedom of religion is not violated. Whoever wants to come should participate. The prayer should be nuetral, and not reference Bible or Gita or Quoran. It should be a prayer of good-will to all, even the terrorists! God give them wisdom not do do these things! Imagine if we pray like this, what will being to happen in their hearts!

We should have a cooperation of millions of people coming together and praying together, not just in America, but all around the world.

To think that all answers to the world problems are in one candidate's head is a mistake.

We have enormous problems. We need to invoke a higher power. Massive prayer is much more effective than the will and prayer of any single individual.

Thanks,
Kamlesh

Dear Candidate Huckabee: Abandon your foolish claim that only Americans uphold and celebrate humanity. This suggestion that only Americans are fully human is an insult to your God and a naive and destructive view of how the United States should relate to the rest of the world.

Don't lie to the American people!!! We are filled to the gills with the Bush Administration and 12 years of Republican corruption, and the lies they tell to justify their corrupt behavior.

What is the theme that yesterday's results in Iowa clearly and emphatically show?

It's time for change, no doubt! But, the next President MUST be able to affect change in Congress. That's the real test of leadership--convincing Congress s/he has the best interests of the American people as first priority, not capitalistic business oriented polities and lobbyists' self-centered aggrandizement that has prevailed over the last 7 years.

We, the people, are entitled to honesty and self-sacrifice from those elected to serve us. Without that dedication our democratic ideals are lost and we are a mockery as the model of a free society to the rest of the world.

Vic van Meter :

Just one message. We elect Congress to write laws for us. We elect a President to enforce the laws Congress writes.

Know your role.

BobL-VA :

Dear Santa,

After 16 years of lying I would like to see honesty restored to the Presidency. No matter who wins the legacies they will be following have tarnished this offices reputation and our standing in the world. It will be a full time job just trying to restore a sense of honesty to this office. Hence, tell the truth, work on our economy and then develop a foreign policy based on diplomacy instead of guns. That's my wish list.

wanderer :

Be honest, brave, generous and honorable. Understand and respect that there are different points of view, without losing your own center. Work with others to bring out situations that benefit all parties. Don't be a bully, demanding that everyone follow your lead. Step back and let others lead, if you're not sure you can do better. And above all, have as your goal the restoration of the idea that America is a place to be proud of.

Yousuf Hashmi :

Dear future president

I am sure all of you have common committments for American public. All of you are committed for strong America and to continue war on terror.

I have a message for you to have a committment for planet earth to be free from pollution, war and suffering.

I request for your committment for the Kyoto Protocol, bringing back US forces to homeland and facilitating the stability in all hot spots in the world

God bless you

Sajid Ansari - Pakistan :

Democrats to take extra care of vote counting particularly in Florida as the history may not be repeated.

We still feel sorry for Al-Gore who would be a better President.

JRLR :

Sir/Madam

I am sending you this copy of my message to the American People. I invite you to make your full support publicly known, without delay.

Thank you
