"Simply put, the rag tag Talaban army did not have the military capacity to achieve a total victory and that kept Afghanistan in a perpetual state of war until the US defeated them militarily."
Last I knew Afghanistan was still in a perpetual state of war. A more accurate way of saying it would be: Simply put, the rag tag Taliban army did not have the military capacity to achieve a total victory and that kept Afghanistan in a perpetual state of war. After the US invasion another element has been added to that perpetual state of war.
“…Upon the withdrawal of USSR forces from Afganistan, the USA looked elsewhere instead of supporting a poor country with the hope of elevating Afganistan out of mere subsistence…”
Salamon, are you kidding? Chances are very good (approx. 100%) that you would have hammered the US for helping Afghanistan because of the lucrative oil and gas contracts, and strategic oil/gas pipelines associated with the Caspian region which the US would certainly have developed (under peaceful conditions).
“…As the USA was WINNING HEARTS AND MINDS in Afganistan via carpet bombing Pushun tribe members, the USA forgot that this tribe is also in Pakistan, with "old fashioned" morality, from the dawn of civilization [or Old Testament], an eye for an eye…”
AFGHANISTAN
Initially, the Talaban were supported by the people of Afghanistan, however, they fought for the extermination of the Shia population (Hazaras), and refused any agreements to share power with people resisting their siege of Afghanistan. Simply put, the rag tag Talaban army did not have the military capacity to achieve a total victory and that kept Afghanistan in a perpetual state of war until the US defeated them militarily.
The Talaban imposed their radical Islamic philosophy on a country with very diverse Islamic beliefs and tribal culture. Approximately 80% of the people of Afghanistan belonged to “the Sunni Hanafi sect, the most liberal of the four Sunni schools of thought”. They imposed a suffocating Islamic law on the population. They forced women out of teaching and back to their homes (in a well orchestrated war against women and their role in society for which the Talaban are best known), and this effectively ended education for many of Afghanistan’s children. They by no means won the hearts and minds of the people of Afghanistan, in fact, just the opposite is true.
After 20 straight brutal years of war, most people of Afghanistan only wanted peace. Once the Talaban were removed from power, building a democracy and providing security and peace was the primary aim of the US led NATO occupation, and therein lies the primary failure in Afghanistan - security. As was the case in Iraq (anywhere for that matter), without security, the government is doomed to failure. In addition, imposing a centralized democratic government on a tribal culture has been very challenging. Afghanistan’s people have been subject to the intimidation and murder of the rejuvenated Pakistan-supported (and created) Talaban.
PAKISTAN
As far as Pakistan goes, YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW. Radical madrassas sprang up by the hundreds in NWFP during the Russian occupation. During the Talaban campaign, these madrassas (funded by the government) supplied thousands of fighters for the Talaban drawn from Afghani refugees and Pakistani students. The Talaban were supported (funded) by the Pakistan Inter-services Intelligence (ISI) which has also funded and trained Islamic radicals active in Kashmir and India - probably to this day. Saudi Arabia also funded, supported and, along with Pakistan, were the only countries in the world that officially recognized the Talaban government.
The government of Pakistan encouraged the growth of radicalism by supporting the Islamic fundamentalist (with help from the CIA against Russia) during the war with Russia and the Talaban during their war to rule Afghanistan. Today, they are reaping the benefits of their OWN misguided policy. This, by no means, is the fault of the US. Their own policies created the unruly Waziristans, and they (as well as the people of Afghanistan) are paying the price for that today.
Cracking down (militarily) on northern Pakistan is the only way to bring back some semblance of democratic rule to Pakistan because currently, the rule of law is absent in this part of Pakistan. The NWFP shelters Islamic terrorist planning attacks all over the world and Imams teach a radical ideology that is foreign to most people of Islamic origin. Shutting down the radicalized madrassas which teach hate and brainwash children should be a priority. From the New York Times, 9/29,2007:
…“A former Taliban commander told United Nations investigators that half of all suicide bombers had been foreigners and that “almost all undergo some form of training and preparation in madrasas based in Pakistan,” according to a United Nations report released earlier this month.
“Over 80 percent of suicide attackers pass through recruitment, training facilities or safe houses in North or South Waziristan en route to their targets inside Afghanistan,” the report added.
Many of the bombers appear to be young, poorly educated Afghans who had attended religious schools in Pakistan, investigators found…”

No country including Pakistan can be dangerous for the world."
And it is Pakistani Military Dictators like any other dictators in any country and corrupt Politicians like any politician in whole world are dangerous for the world.
For example few politicians started slogans like bomb Iran just to get support from people who have no idea about Iran or Persia. Iran never invaded any other single Continent where as Europeans invaded whole World and occupied at least 4 continents permanently.
So it is lack morality and truthfulness which is
dangerous for the world. Ruling class of Pakistan even don't have knowledge of the history of their own country and they even don't know that Pakistan was part of a State whose border consisted from Morocco/Spain to Pakistan Yemen to Chechnya for several hundred years and name of that State is Caliphate.
Indian first Prime Minister Nehru had more knowledge on Islam than any present or recent rulers of Muslim countries. More is in
Were the USA get out of supporting Pakistan, military or financial or CIA/etc, without doubt China will be most happy to take up the cost of supporting Pakistan [with or without Musharaf or Ms Bhutto. First they can afford it, HAVING 1.4 TRILLION$-S TO BURN, A MATTER WHICH IS COMPLETELY OUT OF THE REACH OF THE IDIOT IN CHIEF [EXCLUDING THE PRINTING PRESSES, WHICH WILL CAUSE AND IS CAUSING HAVOC IN UNCLE SAM'S LAND]. CHINA WOULD LOVE TO GET THE HELP OF PAKISTAN TO BALANCE INDIA, especially so that USA is trying to arm India with more WMD-s.
Please get it INTO your head [with your compatriots and idiots in talking head land, the USA IS BROKE!!! - beyond repair. This is due to Federal Deficit, International Balance of Payments, Personal Charge it society, and last but most important: UNFUNDED LIABILITY in intergenerational public expenditure: Social Security, Madicare, vetrans' costs, infrastructure collapse and your love affair with DRIVING.
Kahoor Khan has really abused this site with his multiple posts. If he is cut off, he can simply continue to do so, under a new name.
Once again:
Perhaps, if we withdrew all of our aid to Pakistan, in every form including military and CIA, but supported UN and World Bank aid to Pakistan - that might make the Pakis think the U.S. has turned the page with them. And we and they are now on a new page. And all of Pakistan might take a new look at where they are and where they want to go. It might be very refreshing.
Well we certainly agree Bish is the Idiot in Chief and that he has allowed Chiney to become an equal Idiot in Chief.
The US foreign policy when it comes to the ME has been an abysmal failure. I get the biggest kick out of the Idiot in Chief's supports talking about how the surge is helping. This logical only assumes that most actions have consequences that are good as well as bad. It does nothing to address that the bad so out weighs the good that it's ridculous to even talk about it.
In terms of Pakistan our foreign policy has always been abysmal like the rest of the ME. We have to learn how to allow the countries to be themselves without the threat or actual use of military intervention unless there is no other alternative.
However, I'm at a loss as what we as a nation expected from GW to start with. We knew he was an ideologue with a myopic view of the world and life and he not only proved it his first term, but we re-elected him to a second term. Until that bozoo is out of office and some normalcy can be restored to the White House you will just see more of the same idiotic foreign policy that you've witnessed for the last 7 years.
I totally agree of Pakistan's being most dangerous country as, since the creation it has not any independent foreign policy and has become a broker state to serve for the interests of America and Euoropean countries. The rumours of Islamists taking over of Pakistan's nuclear installation in case of the failure of the military rulers of Islamabad is just a speculation, as the nuclear cooperation between Pakistan's military setup and the Iranians are going on since 10 years. The transferrence of 260 Pakistani nuclear technicians to the Iranian nuclear sites of Natanz and other locations is the concret evidence of Islamabad's two faced policy towards America and the western states.

While I admit to most of your argument earlier, that areas of Pakistan do support the Taliban is and was completely understandable, and foreseeable.
It is the myoptic view of uncultured, uneducated [in foreign countries' history, geography and demographics] leadership of USA which failed to analyse the situation in Afganistan before they went on their carpet-bombing invasion and occupation. Study a map of demographics any part of the world where the great powers of imperial past have managed to draw the international bounderise:
Most of Africa, most of Southern part of Asia, all of ME, not excluding the mess of Treaty of Versailes or the Treaty of Triest, Yalta etc. The intertribal wars, conflicts of Africa as France, England and others drew international boundaries with little interst regarding the natives, the problems of the ex Ottoman Empire, the Problems of the Raj, the problems of the Ex Austro-Hungarian Empire, etc always create cross-border support when any of the POLITICAL UNITS IS ATTACKED. The Pushon tribesmen is one of the most warlike and xenohonic among the remains of FUNNY BORDERS. The IDIOT IN CHIEF, with his puppies in NATO LAND forgot that the both the English and the Russian Empire was defeated by the tribes -- and Uncle Sam wanted to occupy the area on the CHEAP, USSR had over 100 000 soliders there and lost, Uncle Sam wants to win with 30-40 000 -- a totally hopelesws case/.
Another issue you should check into is the Constitution of Pakistan, wherein the Northern tribal areas are autonomous within Pakistan, a price exorted at the breakup of the RAJ.
I still maintain that the present government of the USA is the most dangerous, with Israel's Zionist fanatical government being the second way ahead of any and all other countries.
Perhaps, I am suggesting that the Middle East ( inc. Pakistan) is beyond our saving and must go through a series of civil wars, of large-small magnitudes, and a settling, bottoming out process - before we can seek significant new relations. Is that the message of the "Islamic Awakening." Perhaps we can give assistance at a distance or through 3rd parties. Look at little Somalia and its tortured recent life. Look at Uganda, one murderous dictator after another. And as well, if there were no OIL, there would be no problems in the Middle East - or they would be like Uganda.
All the more reason to get on to "natural gas and the bridge to the hydrogen end-state," as Robert Hefner, geo-entrepreneur, suggested to Fareed Zakaria in a recent Newsweek interview. That will keep us fully engaged for 50+ years.
I think one must focus on the Khomeini revolution in Iran as the event which shapes most of the fracturing Middle East since. I wonder what would have happened if Reagan and we had gone to the Ayatollah in 1981-82 and had said, "We have turned the page of history as have you, the Shah is gone, and we are ready to work with your new Iran as a full legitimate partner in a better Middle East. We accept Iran as it stands (1982)."
In Pakistan, there is no one to say that to. Should we allow Pakistan to follow its own path without our meddling, as David Ignatius suggests?
Victoria, your latest post is most upsetting. Thank you for documenting your posts with all those precious links.
Should PostGlobal be concerned with global issues, it need spend a lot more time on initiatives that have recently transformed this country into a parody of itself.
I think Pakistan is paying the price for being an American ally. But still it is not the most dangerous nation...we should not forget Iraq,Afghanistan,Columbia and many more before coming to Pakistan.

I totally agree with Newsweek and i dare to say that Pakistan is a threat of annihilation of the human race throughout the world. I wonder how the Americans are nurturing the military setup of this country despite, knowing the true fact that their Puppets in Islamabad are assuring the White house of its counter terrorism and killin the armless Pushtoon and Balochs, while enrouting the American supplied weapons to the Taliban fighters in either side of the border regions. The U.S.administration is fully aware that the Government of Pakistan's claim of security of its nuclear installations with the slogans of being under command and control are totally baseless and deceptive, as the authorities in Islamabad have transferred 260 of its nuclear technicians to the Islamic Republic of Iran to assist in the Iranian nuclear program and surface a nuclear device for the Clerics of Tehran.Pakistan which since its creation as a Britts base against the then Soviet Union has conducting the role of a broker to the G.B.and U.S.A.has gained the competency of using its cards to obtain as much of the dollers as it needed, and anyhow, if the Americans are not the good customers, then there are the wealthier ones like Iran and others which are very generous for a nuclear device.

President George W. Bush has sparked much alarm by openly declaring himself to be a dictator in the event of a national emergency under new provisions that will effectively nullify the U.S. constitution, but such an infrastructure has been in place for over 70 years and this merely represents a re-authorization of the infrastructure of martial law.
New legislation signed on May 9, 2007, declares that in the event of a "catastrophic event", the President can take total control over the government and the country, bypassing all other levels of government at the state, federal, local, territorial and tribal levels, and thus ensuring total unprecedented dictatorial power.
The National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive, which also places the Secretary of Homeland Security in charge of domestic "security", was signed earlier this month without the approval or oversight of Congress and seemingly supercedes the National Emergency Act which allows the president to declare a national emergency but also requires that Congress have the authority to "modify, rescind, or render dormant" such emergency authority if it believes the president has acted inappropriately.
Journalist Jerome Corsi, who has studied the directive also states that it makes no reference to Congress and "its language appears to negate any requirement that the president submit to Congress a determination that a national emergency exists."

President Bush, without so much as issuing a press statement, on May 9 signed a directive that granted near dictatorial powers to the office of the president in the event of a national emergency declared by the president.
The "National Security and Homeland Security Presidential Directive," with the dual designation of NSPD-51, as a National Security Presidential Directive, and HSPD-20, as a Homeland Security Presidential Directive, establishes under the office of president a new National Continuity Coordinator.
That job, as the document describes, is to make plans for "National Essential Functions" of all federal, state, local, territorial, and tribal governments, as well as private sector organizations to continue functioning under the president's directives in the event of a national emergency.
The directive loosely defines "catastrophic emergency" as "any incident, regardless of location, that results in extraordinary levels of mass casualties, damage, or disruption severely affecting the U.S. population, infrastructure, environment, economy, or government functions."
When the president determines a catastrophic emergency has occurred, the president can take over all government functions and direct all private sector activities to ensure we will emerge from the emergency with an "enduring constitutional government."
Translated into layman's terms, when the president determines a national emergency has occurred, the president can declare to the office of the presidency powers usually assumed by dictators to direct any and all government and business activities until the emergency is declared over.
Ironically, the directive sees no contradiction in the assumption of dictatorial powers by the president with the goal of MAINTAINING constitutional continuity through an emergency.
The directive issued May 9 makes no attempt to reconcile the powers created there for the National Continuity Coordinator with the National Emergency Act. As specified by U.S. Code Title 50, Chapter 34, Subchapter II, Section 1621, the National Emergency Act allows that the president may declare a national emergency but requires that such proclamation "shall immediately be transmitted to the Congress and published in the Federal Register."
A Congressional Research Service study notes that under the National Emergency Act, the president "may seize property, organize and control the means of production, seize commodities, assign military forces abroad, institute martial law, seize and control all transportation and communication, regulate the operation of private enterprise, restrict travel, and, in a variety of ways, control the lives of United States citizens."
The CRS study notes that the National Emergency Act sets up congress as a balance empowered to "modify, rescind, or render dormant such delegated emergency authority," if Congress believes the president has acted inappropriately.
NSPD-51/ HSPD-20 appears to supersede the National Emergency Act by creating the new position of National Continuity Coordinator without any specific act of Congress authorizing the position.
NSPD-51/ HSPD-20 also makes no reference whatsoever to Congress. The language of the May 9 directive appears to negate any a requirement that the president submit to Congress a determination that a national emergency exists, suggesting instead that the powers of the executive order can be implemented without any congressional approval or oversight.

Totally agree. But, we've got to remember Musharraf is America's creation, & his policies have come to haunt us now. Unfortunately, when 9/11 happened, besides bombing Afghanistan, we should have put pressure on Musharraf to hand over all the Talibanis he'd been shielding in the NW provinces of Pakistan that had been fighting his proxy wars on the Kashmir border. Instead, we sent our unconditional support to Pakistan.Do we abet rogue, terror states? Absolutely. And, we talk about democracy! Its a shame.
Pakistan can only be the second most dangerous country in the world. Only the US can be the most dangerous.
Here is why.
1. In 1999, friendly democratic dictator Musharraf came to power in the wake of a coup d'état, supported by the United States and by western countries, ousting elected Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif in the process.
2. While in 2001, the Bush administration threatened to bomb Pakistan “back to the Stone Age" if Musharraf didn’t deal with the Taliban, in light of recent events, the same Bushmen, true democrats that is, seem to have been unable to find another Hermitage to repeat similar threat (i.e. to expedite the friendly dictator's lot to... God's paradise) if Perverse Musharraf did not turn Pakistan into a democratic country immediately.
3. The US is therefore responsible for Pakistan now living under martial law rather than under the rule of law, thanks to friendly dictator Perverse Musharraf.
4. As recent events have shown, moderate Pakistani democrats being brutally repressed, it becomes clear that the US position vis à vis Pakistan opens the way to extremists taking over the country, thereby Pakistan becoming a potentially dangerous member of the international community.
5. Given the US is responsible for the state of affairs prevailing in Pakistan today, making that country arguably one the most dangerous in the world, it is the US that is undoubtedly the most dangerous country in the world.
Thus can be supported the conclusion one intended to demonstrate in the first place, a conclusion behind which users will no doubt overwhelmingly rally.
Perhaps we should ask, "Dangerous to whom?" Ask a Pakistani - or a Saudi, or a Russian, or a Turk - and they may say that America is the most dangerous country in the world.
Or, perhaps we have reached the point where we must simply live and let live. Meddling in Pakistani politics does America little more benefit than placating any fears we may have about its government's true committment to curbing extremism: a committment that many feel is payed in empty lip service to the Bush administration.

Bush has definitely shown his true colors now. Regardless of how much aid we've dumped into Pakistan, we cannot in any way condone the way Musharraf has treated his country. It doesn't matter how extreme your militants are, you DON'T suspend your constitution and fire dissidents from the judiciary. It's not like anyone believes his chatter anyway.
He's spent the aid money he's received to build up conventional arms (combat aircraft, anti-armor weapons, und so weider). If he was fighting extremists, he'd have been buying personal arms (assault rifles, anti-personnel weapons, kevlar armor). He's obviously failed in shutting down the militants in his country. And then, right when the court is investigating the legality of his election and he is incredibly unpopular in the next coming election, he tells the world that he's suspending everyone's democratic rights because of the militant threat.
And what does Bush do? Strongly condemn the measure? Reduce the aid package? Does he begin talking to other regional powers about the situation that he hasn't talked to before? No. He simply shrugs it off and says he wishes Musharraf hadn't done that. While lawyers and activists are beaten in the streets and thrown in jail for protest, the administration puts on its sad face and talks about how "unfortunate" the situation is.
Words I can type can't even begin to represent my disappointment with our government's response to this affair.

Today we live in fear, fear of criminals, fear of insecurity, fear of the unknown, in our homes, in schools, in offices, in streets, and in exam halls. As students, teachers, principals, parents, policy makers, leaders, journalists, we must pull together to restore society ethical foundations, from our perspective and stations, in our own style and according to own capacities to fight against corruption.

Pakistan is considered the most dangerous country in the world because of an unstable dictatorship that has little support from the people and a radical militant population (Talabanization) that should it come to power, they would control Pakistan’s nuclear weapons. While the northwest frontier of Pakistan also serves as a base and training center for Bin Laden and other radical Islamic fundamentalist used to plan terrorist attacks throughout the world, the primary danger comes from the potential for the nuclear weapons to fall into the hands of these radicals.
The Talaban have garnered great support from the population in northern Pakistan (and to a lesser extent elsewhere in Pakistan). The support given to the Talaban and radical Islam (primarily through the ISI and, to a lesser extent the CIA during the Russian occupation and civil war in Afghanistan) has come back to haunt Pakistan today. They have no control over the Northwest Frontiers (NWFP) at this point, and the radicals operate with impunity.
Radical madrassas supplied the Talaban thousands of soldiers during their war to take over Afghanistan during the 1990’s and the ISI funded and supported their operations. The Talaban derive their philosophy from the Imams of these madrassas which practice a radical form of Islam (Deobandism) that became popular in the NWFP in the 1980‘s during the Russian occupation of Afghanistan when hundreds of madrassas were built. The Talaban started as a popular movement in Afghanistan, but their vision of a “one size fits all” form of Islam in a very diverse Islamic culture with strong tribal ties and customs made them very unpopular by the time the US invaded. The population truly was liberated, but after 20 years of war, the US invasion mostly promised a stable government and peace…well, so they thought.
Contrary to popular belief, the US did not radicalize this population in northern Pakistan because that occurred long before the US arrived, however, the US wars in Afghanistan and Iraq probably has radicalized to a certain extent the more moderate population throughout the rest of Pakistan. Bin Laden enjoys great support from the population in general (I must apologize to MikeB as I was dead wrong when I said Bin Laden has lost popularity because of his killing spree in Iraq. In fact, citing the same Pew poll which I missed the first time I read the poll, he has the support of over 50% of the population in Pakistan and this is an anti US reaction in my opinion).
The key to who controls the country really is the military. As long as Musharraf has control of the military, radical Islam and the Talaban will never take over the country. The military is now being forced to deal with a radical population that has grown in size and popularity. This is seen as a mandate by the US government which is very unpopular in Pakistan. The reality is that for Pakistan to return to democratic rule, they must gain control over the radicals (once and for all) that are primarily located in the Waziristans - marshal law or not.
Finally, the Talaban offer absolutely nothing to the people of Pakistan which much like Afghanistan are culturally diverse. The Red Mosque tragedy indicates the power of radical Imams to brainwash children and this trend is seen in many places in the Muslim world.

Open Letter to the United Nations: this is madness. how can so-called civilized nations cooly and calmly discuss the advisability of entering into World War III, the war after which, if he survives, man will be fighting again with sticks and stones...i read the news and comments from around the world, and i see so much hatred, intolerance, defensiveness, mostly it all comes down to FEAR. many prohecies, from indigenous cultures to the monotheistic religions, indicate that we are in the beginning of the end times, or we are on the brink of transformation. i am not that old, but i have experienced history through the eyes of my parents and other elders who have taught me what they know. i am sorry to say the prognosis is not good for man's survival. it seems almost as if mankind were willing to destroy itself at this moment. nobody can say when the end may come, or the end of this darkness maybe moving into light, but there are millions around the world who see what is happening and i know i am not alone in seeing these events. the UN passed a resolution recognizing the rights of Indigenous Peoples, which of course should not need a formal resolution to be recognized. only four nations did not vote for the resolution, i am ashamed to say that the United States did not support it. every country, like every individual, must first take its own inventory of wrongs before it can start to point to finger at another. how simple this idea is, and yet so few are secure and wise enough to apply it to their lives. nations, like people, can be disordered. yet do not all the nations of the world share in the guilt, in the responsibility for adding to the chaos? many say it was always the same in history, but there is a difference today: more people, more destructive capability, a greater level of insanity and fear, defensiveness and lack of trust...(perhaps)...there is darkness in the world today that seems to snuff out all light, all hope. but there is hope. my own belief is that mostly the Indigenous Peoples, in general more innocent of "civilized" crimes, peoples who care for this Earth, they are the ones who will still be here to rebuild a new world, hopefully, one in which love, and not fear, prevails.

Its an international conspiracy against Pakistan by those who want to see Pakistan weak(like India, and USA)
These ppl(suicide attackers) can not be from Madrasas, they have better things to do than making their own country dangerous.
P.S. This international conspiracy will fail and Pakistanis/Muslims will emerge as more strong a nation (INSHALLAH) :)

Tom Wonacott,
I hate to get picky, but you wrote,
"Simply put, the rag tag Talaban army did not have the military capacity to achieve a total victory and that kept Afghanistan in a perpetual state of war until the US defeated them militarily."

Salamon
Many of the bombers appear to be young, poorly educated Afghans who had attended religious schools in Pakistan, investigators found…”
WHAT A SURPRISE.

Salamon,
Well we certainly agree Bish is the Idiot in Chief and that he has allowed Chiney to become an equal Idiot in Chief.

The White House had no comment.

My God, the INCOMPETANCE OF THIS ADMINISTRATION!
