Now, I'm a Democrat, so this is not something I take lightly, but where is Barak Obama in the Don Imus mess? He is supported by and appears in public with Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson and other black leaders who have said and done some pretty awful things. Just yesterday, the lacross players from Duke had the rape charges dropped against them because it was pretty evident that they hadn't done anything. Yet, Sharpton and Jackson and a bunch of other black activists had/***still are** fanning the flames of hatred and racial intolerance, all but convicting these innocent kids because they are white. Sharpton, just a few years ago, ruined the careers of two New York police officers in a similar racist attack. And who can forgot Jackson's "Hymie Town" remarks and his constant diatribes against whites, Asians, and other non-black ethnics groups. So I ask, where is the condemnation from Mr. Obama of these racists? The things aid and done by these bigots weren't failed jokes, they were done deliberately. Mr. Obama's suitability to be President rides on his immediate condemnation of these people and his keeping a distance from them. The television show I want to see, I demand to see, is one where Obama and Hillary CLinton come out and condemn the actions of these black bigots, annouce their return of all contributions from black bigots, check on the black churches and other places they campaign to ensure that they do not practice or hold these sort of racist views, and cease to appear with or meet with Sharptojn, Jackson and every balck leader who has *ever* made a racist remark. Either that, or he and Hillary IS UNSUITABLE to be President and I wont vote for either of them.

Cayambe,

I'm sure you are aware about a beautiful Ecuadorian mountain called Cayambe too. I'm curious about why you got this nickname?

Thank your for your interesting though difficult questions.

I'm not sure about the relationship between Ecuador's DirecTV and Murdoch's company. I suspect there is something like a Latin-American DirecTV which buys content from the parent company, translates much of that content into Spanish, and then forwards it to national companies such as Ecuador's. The best quality of DirecTV was the ablility to choose the desired spoken language. Most shows had at least English and Spanish available; others had only one language; but some such as ESPN had, maybe 6 or 8 live languages to choose from. In any case, the national company had strict control over local customers. For instance, they were able to deliver a personalized monthly invoice directly to my receiver; and operators were able to immediately habilitate any Pay-Per-View show.

Regarding the political mess in Ecuador, it has only deteriorated in the last month. President Correa has succeeded in keeping opposition congressmen out of Congress, which remains completely paralyzed. Those congressmen initiated legal action challenging their removal, but the Electoral Court fired judges that even allowed those cases to be heard. The Constitucional Court, which is supposed to decide on the matter shortly, has also been threatened by Mr Correa and his supporters, who make continuous calls for Constitucional Court justices to be kicked out too.

The referendum about the installation of a Constitucional Assembly will take place this Sunday April 15. Mr Correa has launched an overwhelming campaign promoting the "YES", with stump speaches all over the country, around-the-clock ads in mass media, and even attending soccer games in order to look popular; poor citizens are being payed 20 dollars for attending Mr Correa's speaches. Of course, all this is payed by the administration, with our taxes. Meanwhile, citizen groups promoting the "NO" have been prevented from airing their ads by the Electoral Court and are now threatened with legal action because, Mr Correa says, "they seem to have received money from unknown sources".

Nevertheless, the "NO" seems to have gained some strenght. We will see what happens this Sunday.

Salamon :

TV takes the place of the Roman Emperors dictum: food and circus for the "unwashed", and TV is the latter.

Tv is also a major wealth transfer agent, where the cable fees, advertizing income [that which is essentially presented to the middle and lower classes] aid and abet the transfer from the poor [and middle class] to the extreme well paid entertainers [and sport personages/ ad blurb talking heads]. The pay scale of some members of "sportentertainment business" exceed the median income for a month [of the USA] on a daily [sometimes hourly rate] by the likes of PRO GOLFPLAYERS, Basketball, baseball, hockey and football. The income of Holywood "stars" exceeds the income of small hamlets, city block etc - all through the ever present TV.

It is not by mistake that the bloody issues of the war are unpresented in national TV, for the issue of "news" is entertainement, with short sound bites and lot of innuendo [especailly with respect to the STARS of Sport, Politics, and entertainement industry members].

Do TV News and "science shows" present the problems of USA or the world? not really, they mostly subscribe to relating those issues which is dear to the politicians and wealthy individuals, There is very little shown of the results of wars [how many airial pictures were shown of Fujilla, Baghdad or othe rplaces which were carper bombed by the USA [or in Afganistan, or in Somalia, or etc].

How did it happen that Mr. Gore's INCONVINIENT TRUTH was such a hit, when all the info therein was available for years? -- except TV executives decided that such INFORMATIVE MAJOR ISSUES should not be presented to the masses!!

Therefore, it must be concluded that TV-s two great aims are 1., make a select few extremely wealthy, and 2., fry the brains of the masses with useless entertainment, lest they actually get involved with important things [Global Warming, deposing of destructive politicians, advancement of equal educational opportunity, etc] to the detriment of politicians and the superwealthy.

BobL-VA :

Why should Americans watch television shows? Nothing is more entertaining then watching the White House screw up everything they touch. If it wasn't for the people dying and our military having to serve in a useless war the White House would have provided us with the best comedy on television. Unfortunately, it's turned into a tragedy.

Stay tuned. It's apparent the WH doesn't have a clue on how to deal with a Democratic Congress so we can expect several more new episodes of Dumb and Dumber defying the laws of reason.

Anyone want to be the war czar? Since Bish can't find a retired general who is willing to do it I'm waiting for the announcement that Bush has nominated Don Imus for the job.

In an upcoming episode the AG is being raked over the coals by the Senate for his handling of the 8 fired prosecutors. In the middle of the questioning his pants spontaneously catch on fire. You guessed it, the eposide will be entitled, "The Hot Seat." In this episode Monica Gooding will assert since she was a political appointment she isn't a public servant, but rather a Presidential Servant and shouldn't have to talk to anyone other then her master. This argument befuddles the Democrats and they have to recess to discuss it's merits. There is no conclusive outcome from the recess so she is sent home without the thanks of Congress.

Stay tuned for Bush announcing he'll build a 40 foot high wall around the entire country to keep the evil terrorists from infiltrating the North Shore of Alaska. He'll only retreat from this course of action when his own aides point out he has been unable to fix a few levies in New Orleans.

Who needs network television shows? We have something so much better live every day all around us.

Yousuf Hashmi :

Thanks God I stopped watching TV serials long time before. But there was a news item somewhere that among the president's and prime minister's wives "desperate wives " are very popular. Honestly speaking I never had an opportunity to watch the serial and neither aware of the theme.

And why to watch a TV serial. When the live un ending drama is round the clock on news channel. Most popular are the series name, Iraq, Afghanistan, Iran, Darfur and North Korea etc. You will find all spices avilable there. melo-drama,tradgedy,comedy and espionage name anything and you will find your favourite flavour.

THOMAS GLIDEWELL :

I live in Texas, which as anyone who has ever lived or stayed here very long knows, is another world! I would have to say the most popular show is American Idol,(God help us.) It was once any news conference or speech given by "W." But I think even that has changed. He is no longer Texa's favorite son. As Natile Maines said, We're ashamed he claims he's a Texan.

EsquireToBe :

The most popular show, hmm... well, I know for myself it's CSI (all of them), Law & Order (all of them), a few reality (the Bachelor because of my g/f), lots of Discovery channel and I'm a huge fan of ON Demand... movies are the greatest american pasttime! forget baseball...

I think the DC area is so diverse, you'd have a hard time pinning down only ONE popular show... because of the mixed crowd, you'd definately get a wide range!

Mike :

Under the category of light comedy: any pronouncement or speech by Bush. Under the category of horror: any pronouncement or speech by Bush. Under the category of light fiction: any pronouncement or speech by Bush. Also, least watched.....

Cayambe :

Berry of Ecuador,
Would your DirecTV be the same spawn of Rupert Murdoch as ours? Considering that these are satelite signals I wouldn't have guessed that Ecuador would be large enough to merit its own unique programming?

Has the Court and the Congress settled their power struggle yet? Our media seems largely unaware of it, except the NYT once and a while.

berry, ecuador :

There is a DirecTV anthena sitting on my house's roof, but the service was discontinued several months ago. I cancelled my membership, tired of the permanent fraud this company does in Ecuador: several channels disappeard without notice; they offered the NBA, Wimbledon, the FIFA World Cup, but never delivered; finally, they offered live American Idol, but the broadcast was always one or two weeks old. Friends subscribed to other cable companies complained about the same problems. So... I went back to open Ecuadorian TV.

This has been a shock for me and my family. There is a dozen of channels on open TV, all of them carry basically the same garbage: local news dominated by the political mess; bloody, around-the-clock reports on traffic accidents, violent murders, abandoned or abused children; imported soap operas from Mexico, Venezuela, Colombia or Brazil; and soccer, professional soccer, amateur soccer, international soccer, etc.

In the mid of all this, there are two shows that dominate and even mold popular culture here. The first is a dancing contest called "Dancing for a dream" where the winner couple will receive some money to make a dream come true (paying for medical expenses, building a nursery school, etc).

The other show is called "A todo dar", an afternoon-long show featuring beautiful girls and handsome boys who dance, and dance, and dance to the rythms of fashionable songs, while members of the audience participate in small contests where the prizes are little things donated by the sponsors: a pair of sandals, supermarket coupons, a pack of baby diapers, a cell phone. This is the number-one show in the country, with top ratings and sponsors fighting for a spot. Teenagers around the country dream of becoming A-Todo-Dar dancers someday.

Anyway, I consider myself lucky to have abandoned cable TV. Instead of giving money away to the cable company, I have managed to build a respectable collection of movies, documentaries and books, which my wife and kids enjoy too. This is our best defense against garbage TV.

Vic van Meter :

Ohio is a cynical state, I imagine. Here the biggest TV shows are shock-comedies like Family Guy, South Park, and the Adult Swim lineup on Cartoon Network. The few television shows I've watched recently all fit that mold and anyone, of any age, even, that I speak to has watched one of those recently.

I suppose it's a piece of Ohio. In such a diverse group as the one in Ohio, you can't be completely serious about yourself or your affiliations. It isn't Alabama or California, you might imagine, and you never have pure reds or blues out here. Take me for example: I've voted Democrat for most positions I've voted for, so I identify myself that way. But I'm a strong supporter of the right to bear arms, I'm fairly pro-business, I'm very strong on shrinking the government and removing ourselves slightly from the wellfare state. I believe marriage is a religious issue and if the church believes it is between a man and a woman, so be it. I also believe that since it's a church arguement, it has no place in government and that marriages should be stricken from our laws so that the churches can exerise more control over them.

Politicians hate Ohio because we'll have conservative arguements for Democratic reforms and liberal ones supporting Republicans. We're a big mess of people who aren't Centrists, we're just all over the place and we're hard to pin down.

Which is why political commentary, making huge, sweeping statements about things, even those we PERSONALLY BELIEVE IN, are absolutely hilarious out here. No other place on Earth can you get away with a joke about extending abortion limits to five year olds with your churchgoing friends. I love it here!

D. Hodara :

To Daniel,

You will find some peace of mind when you accept the fact that there is no sanity in our world, as long as money and power continue to be the most important human goal - creating greed and selfishness. We can only hope.

D. Hodara :

In our area - France - the most amusing programme consists of watching the various 'actors' who take part in the french elections. The first round of voting will take place next April 22nd and the second and last round is expected on May 16th. So we have about another month to enjoy the 'electoral fights'. Considering the importance of the president's election - besides the enjoyment, we can expect tears and disappointments.
Democracy is a bad system. but there are no better ones available.

Anju Chandel, New Delhi, India :

Currently no one TV program can claim to be the 'most' popular on the Indian television. ... The Indian television witnessed a huge change in its viewers' profile - and numbers - after the same day launch of two programs by "Star Plus", one of the most popular entertainment channels, in 2001.

One of the programs was a game show - "Kaun Banega Crorepati - KBC - inspired from 'Who wants to become a millionaire', hosted by Amitabh Bachchan - the Bollywood Superstar with conveniently the highest number of fans on this earth and also probably one of the top 3 actors ever born on this planet!

And the other was a daily soap - "Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi" - (In English: "Because Mother-in-law was also the house's lady once".) (Hope I have done a satisfactory translation!). This was a story about complicated human relationships and emotions.

Both these programs became huge successes and set unprecedented records in viewerships and also impacted the way a household ran or the Indian females (especially) dressed up, and, also the way TV programs were made! The best thing is that both these programs are still on air and popular, too!

The other HUGELY popular programs have been "Ramayana" and "Mahabharata" - the two HUGELY inspiring Indian epics, based on Indian mythology – two MASTER PIECES in all sense of the word, which had the entire nation of 1 billion people at a standstill when they went on air! These were broadcasted by "Doordarshan", the national TV channel in late '80s and early '90s.

Significant changes were also seen in the viewing of News post 9/11 because of which India can today boast of perhaps the highest number of 24x7 news channels in the world! And some of them - especially the ones in English - NDTV 24x7, CNN-IBN - have world-class news reporting by highly competent news anchors (Rajdeep Sardesai, Prannoy Roy, Barkha Dutt) and some highly talented political commentators and hosts (Karan Thapar, Vir Sanghvi) who are hugely popular and inspiring personalities in their own right!

Not to forget the huge popularity of the live telecast of Cricket matches, especially when the Team India is playing! Even bosses in offices all across the country ignore the fact that their juniors are all hooked to 'scores' on the Net and in a real hurry to be home to watch their cricket heroes play and catch the match live on TV!

Indian television – English, Hindi, and various regional languages channels - is fun and educative if you know what you want to watch and is evolving further for better and the day is not far when the Indian television would start dominating the world media like India is emerging in the field of economic superstardom!

Atheist, Boston, USA :

The most popular show in my neck of the woods is re-runs of Star Trek -- The Original Series.

When Gene Roddenberry created Star Trek, he was living through the turmoil of the Cold War. He used the fictional groups in his Star Trek plots to represent the major powers of the 1960s. The Romulans represented the Chinese: the Chinese are barbaric and believe in their superiority over all mankind. The Klingons represented the Soviets: the Soviets are militaristic and hell bent on dominating the globe. The Vulcans represented the Japanese: the Japanese are technically oriented and evolved beyond the warrior-mentality of the Chinese. The Federation folks represented the Americans: the Americans make every effort to promote human rights.

Of course, the Orions represented the Indians. The Indians are brutal abusers and sexually depraved.

In fact, several news outlets have just announced the results of a study of child rearing in India.

http://www.zeenews.com/articles.asp?aid=364850&sid=NAT&ssid=

According to the study, 50% of Indian children have been sexually abused. 67% of Indians children have been brutally beaten by their own parents.

Gene Roddenberry was a sheer genius when he used the fictional groups in his Star Trek universe as metaphors for the different groups. His metaphors are quite accurate; the Orions are particularly so.

Cayambe :

Where I live the most popular show is Jim Lehrer's hour. Once in a while I reflect on the mystery of why Judy Woodruff has become so good again after her terrible sojorn on CNN.

The question was removed purely so that your interesting opening statement would appear on the PostGlobal homepage when we featured your comment. There was no editing done to your own words. Apologies for altering your preferred format, it was merely to give your words as much volume as we could offer on the site, and to encourage others to respond. Your post has been returned to its original format.

daniel :

Daniel to postglobal. Why did you remove the question of the week from the top of my post? I repeat the question deliberately to hold stylistic order--in fact this forum offers a way to make acceptable a question and answer type of essay (which I have actually been doing for years). Quite simply to me it is as if I painted a painting and you decided to chop off the top five or six inches. Why must everywhere we look the art is removed from writing? All is being turned into no form prose, "freeverse" poetry, etc. Keep your damn hands off my writing. If you want to steal the ideas--fine. If you want to steal the form--fine. Do anything you like. Just before my eyes leave everything alone so I can have the illusion things I write actually matter...

If you want to edit the above work try in the second paragraph changing the fourth sentence to "But we also have increasingly dangerous weaponry falling into the hands of smaller and smaller groups of people..." Or in the third paragraph you can change the third sentence to read "In this show technology has decisively spread to the third world and nuclear and biological weaponry has been used."

If you really want to edit maybe you can put me into contact with someone that actually gives a damn about writing and ideas and I can get published. But of course questions about writing that are serious are the last thing one would ask of a newspaper....

Jackie Rawlings :

Good move by the White House and Homeland Security as the order that no company could do business with the countries Bush labled the Axis of Evil. Then this reports comes out
Halliburton winds up Iran work
Now that's a surprise as Halliburton is the only company that was given contrats by Cheney as we invaded Iraq, plus with all the FEMA money that was stolen. Americans have been told they have to be spied on and banks records checked plus no American business is to do business with the so called Axis of Evil countries. Yet the White House has no problem with dealing with Iran behind the Americans back. No media or press ever reported this. Like the Walter Reed was treating our injured troops like trash as billions of dollars was given to the troops by the 109th Congress while all along the money was going to Halliburton's work in Iraq/Afhan/Iran. And the media wonders why the Public can't trust the news, reporters, media and White House. Americans have been made fools of yet again by the Bush Administration.

daniel :

For the spring holidays, a lighter question: What's the most popular TV show where you live, and what effect does it have on viewers?

I watch little television, but I have enjoyed shows like "the office" (I think Jenna Fischer is so hot); "Desperate housewives" (Eva Longoria); any Donald Trump show (my respect for him is quite high even though he is rightly assailed for not having the highest taste...No one is perfect); "Boston legal" (Shatner and Spader)...I suppose there are other shows, I just never really move through TV land thoroughly to know...I like movie actors on TV though--James Woods in Shark. I also saw Jeff Goldblum for a bit on a new show called "Raines". I like Jeff Goldblum a lot--a strange and interesting man--a strange way about him which I have difficulty grasping.

But the show I am most interested in is the one called "Technology Rush". This show is about human technology getting out of control of humans and how the American political structure is being completely dishonest about it. We have of course environmental damage and the liberals in the U.S. are the saints about that. But we also have increasingly dangerous weaponry falling into smaller and smaller groups of people and this is called the war on terror and is championed by the Republican party. Both political parties of course are for increasing freedom and democracy in the world, although no one mentions how that can be reconciled with increasing environmental disaster and the spread of increasingly dangerous weaponry. in short in the advanced nations we have a questionable grip on technology what with environmental destruction and the spread of weaponry and rampant consumerism, and just as the advanced nations are trying to come to grips with this within themselves the poorest nations are rapidly gaining power and about to gain entrance into these modern problems. No matter how you look at it the problem is man not coming to grips with his technology and scientific advancement in general.

A most interesting show. The part I like best about the show is all the torture and attempts to make man compatible with technological advancement. In this show technology has decisively spread to the third world and nuclear and biological weaponry have been used. Of course the environment is a disaster worldwide. The advanced nations have come together and tyrannize the oil supply. Psychiatrists are the new priests--definitively established--and everyone is on drugs for one "mental disorder" or another. Of course when social life is totally insane we have no parameter to determine the difference between sanity and insanity. And of course everyone is encouraged to become obese and slow down and to remain at home watching television and to not gather into groups of more than ten people unless in particular places such as bars or concert halls or movie theaters.

In this world everyone is frightening to everyone else--potentially an environment destroyer of one sort or another. And in fact weapons have spread so much and are so capable of being utilized by small groups of people (so much power in such few hands--in all our hands) that environmental destruction has taken on a whole new meaning.

The world is virtually a totalitarian state in this show determined to somehow arrive at where man's increasing capability to destroy himself will not compromise himself. Very few people are trusted in this show. We routinely have people faced with the dilemma of coming across nuclear weapons, etc. which they can do with as they wish--and they have to decide, struggle within themselves, whether to detonate or not.

This show is great because it really gets at man's relationship to technology and scientific advancement--brings out every possible dilemma. Naturally the show has a lot of hot stars: Scarlett Johansson, Jessica Alba, Charlize Theron, Eva Longoria, Jenna Fischer, etc. And lots of studly dudes: Brad Pitt, clone of Mel Gibson as he was in Mad Max with great hands and tight ass, Colin Farrell (is that that Irish guys name?), and a whole lot of intelligent men actors like Kevin Spacey and Billy Bob Thornton and Tommy Lee Jones as he was in the Fugitive. A really great show. Tight asses, hot tits, great hands, loads of brains, and one hell of a getting at the human dilemma. Of course we have to have the token blacks: Denzel, Cuba Gooding, Fishburne, Whittaker, Samuel L.,...special appearance by Mariah Carey, naked Christina Aguillera...(and I know I misspelled Christina's name and she is not black).

What are we going to do about the advanced nations sucking down oil? How are we going to keep the emerging nations from just adding to the problem and buckling the ecosystem? How are we going to keep the emerging nations from acquiring the most dangerous weaponry as the advanced nations increasingly hog the ecosystem? How is increasing democracy helping the situation? Is it not a wholesale failure to deal with technological advancement? Can we not expect religious terrorists, left wing maniacs, right wing devils and unabombers (against technology in general) galore?

Please someone explain sanity to me. What is sanity in a world gone mad?
