Arizona religious leaders to lobby McCain on immigration reform

A number of Arizona religious leaders plan to fly to Washington on Thursday to ask home state Sen. John McCain and White House officials to take immediate action on comprehensive immigration reform.

The religious leaders have denounced Arizona SB-1070, the state's new and controversial law that requires local police to check the immigration status of anyone they reasonably suspect of being in the United States illegally. Critics say the new law legalizes racial profiling.

Nearly 60 percent of Americans support the new law, according to a new study by the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press. But a number of religious groups have joined calls for an Arizona boycott.

"The National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference, Hispanic National Association of Evangelicals, stands poised to engage and support lawful activities that pressures the State of Arizona to repeal the recently passed legislation that continues to polarize our communities, discriminates against American citizens, and facilitates a platform for racial profiling." NHCLC president Rev. Samuel Rodriquez (an On Faith panelist) said in a statement.

Religious leaders who plan to fly to Washington are: Bishop Gerald Frederick Kicanas, Tucson Diocese of the Roman Catholic Church; Bishop Minerva G. Carcaño, Desert Southwest Conference of The United Methodist Church; Rev. Monsignor Richard William O'Keeffe, Episcopal Vicar, Yuma - La Paz Vicariate Immaculate Conception Parish; Rev. Dr. Gary D. Kinnaman, Pastor at Large, Phoenix-area, and Chairman, AZ Governor's Council on Faith and Community Initiatives, 2008; Rev. Jan Olav Flaaten, Executive Director, Arizona Ecumenical Council; Rabbi John Andrew Linder, Temple Solel, Scottsdale; Joseph David Rubio, Lead Organizer for Arizona, Industrial Areas Foundation.

Why would any person of the cloth advocate increased violence and anarchy? Arizona ranchers near the border live with daily terror that elite do-gooders can scarcely imagine. Residents don't go outside without a gun, and are careful that drug smuggler lookouts don't see them reach for a cell-phone to call the Border Patrol.

It's infuriating when real violence (including murder) to Americans is ignored entirely because of imaginary threats of "profiling" to lawbreakers.

This news is about asking McCain to support a Comprehensive Immigration Reform, that will help to reduce the pressure for people looking for jobs, therefore, that will Immigration Agents & Police to focus more on the real danger of the violent drug war. With that being said I really hate when people are just trying to send their xenophobic personal views trying to divert the real meaning of a Comprehensive Immigration Reform. No One, and I MEAN NO ONE is trying to increase violence and Anarchy by no means.

It is sad what happened to the Arizona Rancher, but the truth is the the Nationality of the suspects is unknown according to Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever is investigating a person in the United States, not in Mexico, in connection with the shooting. So please do not make assumptions without knowing the truth, let the authorities do their job in finding the real killer and stop using this tragedy as a political view.

Illegal immigration is a crime, and any respectable churchgoer should realize that. The shameless meddling by that loathsome Pelosi is despicable. The church should simply stay out of it... it's a law enforcement matter, and the vast majority of Americans want the laws enforced and the invaders ejected. Period.

"Illegal immigration is a crime, and any respectable churchgoer should realize that" Wrong, check your facts again, being an undocumented immigrant is not a crime (except for the new Arizona law which makes it a crime).

"The church should simply stay out of it..." Why?

"it's a law enforcement matter, and the vast majority of Americans want the laws enforced and the invaders ejected. Period."

Everybody wants the laws enforced , but there needs to be a complete solution, that restores the rule of law, and reaffirms our nation's values. It would be like a table with 1 leg, it would need the other 3 legs to stand firm. The other 3 legs are the that we are nation of laws and that we are also a nation of immigrants, and the enforcement, and making sure that the borders are secured. Immigration Reform at the federal level is long over due, and the federal government owes the American people a response on that, 78% of Americans want Immigration Reform (NYTIMES ), and Arizona's way is not the way to go.

Also beware of hate group FAIR, with their anti-immigrant propaganda. They lobby to take citizenship away from US native-born children of undocumented Immigrants. And also more and more people have seen their true colors, - what can you expect when their founder is known to be big hog anti-minorities, so all the hate toward immigrants have been raised mainly by that hate group which hire nuts to make small groups like "save our state" and "save Arizona now" and they get paid for it, and people get exposed to their anti-immigrant propaganda. Lets face it they are anti-immigrant - their first principle according to Wikipedia is "cut the numbers", which takes Legal immigrants on the same boat, but since they have no grounds on legal immigrants, they target the defenseless and weak, children and scapegoat the undocumented immigrants. Only fox news treat that group seriously. And everybody knows ( I think ) where fox news stands.

Why would anyone other than a desperate McCain pay any attention to religious 'leaders' on any issue?
Smugly atop their TAX-EXEMPT, money sucking institutions, abusing their parishoners' children, politicizing their pulpits, why would anyone vote for any candidate who seemed to listen to their hypocritical thoughts?

How do religious leaders feel about an LA teacher/professor who calls for revolution in the name of reclaiming what originally belonged to Mexico at a La Raza UCLA rally.

"Why is it that these people, these frill, racist, white people want to keep us out of this country?

We have a long history in example of our commandante, Fidel Castro. We have Hugo Chavez, Eva Moralzez, we have Brazil, Ecuador, you name it.

We no longer will fall to these lies called borders.

We see ourselves, all of us here, as the Northern front of a Latin American revolutionary movement. There are more than 40 million of our people north of the Rio Grande. That means to them that’s 40 million potential revolutionaries north of the border inside the belly of the beast.

Our enemy is the same enemy as Hugo Chavez had… Our enemy is the same enemy that keeps Africa poor. Our enemy is the same enemy that keeps Asia poor. Our enemy is capitalism and imperialism."

Wikipedia re: LaRaza:

NCLR is often criticized by commentators for allegedly espousing separatist or irredentist sentiments. Anti-illegal immigration websites, such as American Patrol and The American Resistance, accuse NCLR of encouraging illegal immigration to the United States, and the latter hosts an exhaustive list of companies and organizations that donate to the NCLR.[7] However, the organization states on its website that it “has repeatedly recognized the right of the United States, as a sovereign nation, to control its borders. Moreover, NCLR has supported numerous specific measures to strengthen border enforcement.”

Faith leaders recognize the humanity of all persons, no exceptions. What's "hypocritical" about that? Few people already hear could have passed the tests imposed on immigrants today, and English settlers wanted NO others, and where would the nation be without the diversity? Italians, Jews, Eastern Europeans were considered "non white" a century ago. We created new immigration laws to fight the dreaded commies (obviously some still are) but if your ancestors did not have to pass these hurdles, you have less than no right to demand it of others. We do impose our economic dominance on other nations, and surprise! The people refuse to roll over and die. They come here for what we took from them there. Simple end to this - a new port of entry, renewed easy entry and ability to leave, and a renewed commitment to protecting human beings first, profits second. Don't subsidize our corporations' predatory presence in other nations. That will make a huge difference. Are you willing to do that?

Send the clergy to the border and let them see what is really happening. After they get shot at by the drug cartels, they will change their tune. Of course, they may be able to convince the illegal immigrants to change their behavior and become law abiding individuals who respect the laws of another country and the right of it's citizens........ probably not.

There is always time to do what its right. For those who ask the church should stay out of it, let me remind you that our motto as American is "In God we Trust", and any respectable churchgoer should not be hypocrite promoting: hate & breaking families. Not all Illegals are Criminals. Immigration Reform is the real solution; if not can anyone tell me what major change happened between 2006 and now. Absolutely nothing, we will find ourselves with the same dilemma in another 4 years if an Immigration Reform is not passed ASAP.

breaking the law is breaking the law is breaking the law.... In AZ the percentage of INFORMED individuals about the new law is actually about 80% in favor. Ignorance leads to chaos and panic. This law simply enforces the fed law and is not racist. McCain has been fighting immigration for years. There is no way he jumps ship on this issue, he has heard the voters and he has always worked for us, even if that means him changing ways to represent the majority of Arizona voters.

Can we lose JD already. As if his reputation is not enough, he keeps opening his big mouth and talking about issues he already failed on!
