Tony Blair and "Rethinking" Sexuality
By Elizabeth Tenety
Prominent new Catholic Tony Blair says in a recent interview with the British gay magazine Attitude that religious attitudes on sexuality need "rethinking."
It's not news that Blair's view is widely shared among Catholics. A 2008 Gallup poll, for example, found that large proportions of Catholics consider homosexual relations and unmarried sex to be morally acceptable, much to their church's distress.
Still, Blair framing of the issue is nuanced and, given his prominence, likely to stir debate. "There's probably that same fear amongst religious leaders that if you concede ground on an issue like this [homosexuality], because attitudes and thinking evolve over time, where does that end? You'd start having to rethink many, many things," he said. "Now, my view is that rethinking is good, so let's carry on rethinking. Actually, we need an attitude of mind where rethinking and the concept of evolving attitudes becomes part of the discipline with which you approach your religious faith."
Catholics have long been implementing their home-grown sexual theology in spite of guidance from the church.
The Church's official position on sexuality, most recently promulgated through Pope John Paul II's "Theology of the Body," is that the complementarity of the male and female bodies is a sign of God's design; therefore homosexual sex is considered to be disordered. Also disordered are married couples who use contraception. JPII said: "The conjugal act signifies not only love, but also potential fecundity. Therefore it cannot be deprived of its full and adequate significance by artificial means."
Considering that 96% of Catholics admit to using contraception, there are a lot of disordered Catholics by the church's definition.
Blogger Andrew Sullivan said in Kerry Kennedy's book 'Being Catholic Now' that he is Catholic not in spite of his homosexuality, but because of it.
"Their [The Catholic Church's] whole doctrine of sexuality is so fraught with internal contradiction. It's your job to ask yourself, what are they asking me to believe? I studied quite intensely the theological arguments about the impermissibility of anything except procreative marital heterosexual sex and thought them through. I engaged the hierarchy at a rational level and came to the conclusion that they didn't actually make sense, on their own terms. . . My obligation, therefore, as a Catholic, is to bring this forward and say, tell me where I'm wrong. The truth matters."

Let us call gay sexual activity what it really is i.e. "mutual masturbation".
It is all about physics and biology!!!! An analogy would be an electron mating with a proton i.e. heterosexual sex vs. an electron mating with another electron i.e. "mutual masturbation".
Then there is the difference in potential disease transfer in "mutual masturbation" vs. regular masturbation which gets into the "wrongness" of the former vs. the "okness" of the latter from a strictly sanitation veiwpoint.
And then there are the "sins" of gay sex outside of gay "marriage" i.e.
fornication and adultery.

Ah, yes.. the Cowardly Chicken who Needs Love. Who stated that he watched a 'friend' die of AIDS and refuses to acknowledge that said person is/was deserving of someone to love and care for them even if he is/was gay.
Your hypocrisy knows no bounds. But this is a joyous week because now there are four states who have legalized same sex marriage, one of which through the legislature.

Some Christians have experience the wrath of God in their lives. He is real to them and they know 100 percent that God doesn't lie.
What God had promised to do with marrying gay couples, that he would fulfill.
Destruction, that is his promise. God has NEVER renege on his promise.
Wait and see for yourselves.
"Likewise, their men have given up natural sexual relations with women and burn with lust for each other. Men commit indecent acts with men, so they experience among themselves the PUNISHMENT they deserve for their perversion. " (Romans 1:27)
"Although they know God's judgment that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do these things but also approve of others who do them." (Romans 1:32)

Seems to me that the church is about two hundred years past its best-before date, and I find it unbelievable that Mr Blair has joined such an elephantine organization that is so hopelessly out of step with the modern world.
The only thing that makes sense to me, is that Blair is a smart atheist - who sees the idiocy of the church, and the great damage it does to everything it touches, that he has decided that the only way to get it to change is not from outside - but from the inside. And you can only get on the inside if you pretend to believe in the Sky-God.
If this is true - I say good luck Mr.Blair, I hope you manage to drag this ancient superstitious superpower into the 21st century where real men don't wear frocks and knickers, and dont pray to the great nothing up there in the clouds like they did hundreds of years ago.
We know more in 2009 than was ever thought possible in 1009.

The RCC's stance on sexuality? You mean as in excommunicating a nine-year-old raped by her stepfather, as in also excommunicating her mother, and the doctors who gave her an abortion to save her life? All while the Catholic stepfather rapist animal remained and remains a member in good standing of the RCC?
Reminiscent of the "moral" position of Islamist extremists toward sexually victimized girls and women. And this Ratz-inger has the gall to criticize Islam?
Technically, the Middle Ages ended a long time ago. Yet, still, we see this fossilized RCC Thing exerting power over the lives of all of us, whether Catholic or not. Isn't it time for this deadening Thing to head museum-ward? Donate Vatican Nation to Italy and use it as a tourist attraction, solemn reminder of the moral blindness and consequences that threaten us all.
Tell the Pope and Catholic clergy to go out and do honest labor. Do honest days' work, refrain from the RCC's historic evil, etc.

So what? If they're good Catholics, 100% should say that they are sinners. It's not always easy to know when we sin. Just because our subjective consciences say something is OK, doesn't mean it's OK objectively. It can take a while to figure it out.
Sometimes it takes a long journey to get somewhere.

My friend who died from AIDS did not die alone and unloved. He died in an AIDS hospice surrounded by a loving family. And he was laid to rest in a Catholic church and cemetery where his many relatives and friends paid their last respects. Weather prevented me from traveling the 600 miles to his funeral.

I agree that the church's teachings are unrealistic and make no sense when it comes to sexual issues. They are also made by a group of people, all male, who do not officially engage in sexual or romantic relationships and therefore cannot be expected to make sense. Most thinking people disregard them.
Regarding homosexuality in the church, society or any church, the teaching against homosexuality also makes no rational sense. If love and sex should go hand in hand, that can and does happen in same sex unions. Plenty of loveless sex also occurs in hetereosexual unions. So I don't see what homosexuality has to do with anything. Most hetereosexual sex is had with not only no intention to procreate, but with the dire hope that it does not result in procreation. In a homosexual couple, you have two people whose sex will absolutely not result in procreation. So what? It makes absolutely no difference. If the church wanted to talk about being responsible about love and sex and fostering stable relationships before raising children, that would be entirely different. That makes sense for same sex and heterosexual couples. If the church wanted to teach the difference between infatuation and real love, that would make sense. But an all-out ban of homosexual sex just 'cause they think it's weird and God doesn't like it -- that has no practical application in the real world. Instead it tends to be divisive and alienating.

The truth is that every normal man has an urge for sexual gratification and some choose to indulge in any perversion or abnormality. Some people or the so called modern liberal and secular experts will always find a justification for any activity which humans find enjoyable. As to the claim by some homosexuals that it is genetic, this has been decisively disproven but but I say, it is an aberration of mind and taste bugs. Studies have shown that children of homosexuals are no more likely to be homosexual than any other children. If it were hereditary, many more of them would be homosexual. In the western societies, homosexuality frequently seems to result from a failed male role model - a father who is abusive or grossly negligent, and on that premise incest, bestiality and pederasty should certainly be natural as well.
Every society has devious and sinful men who abuse children sexually and many fathers have regular sexual intercourse with their daughters and produce illegitimate children by them. Everywhere sheep or goats are kept, they are used for sex. So the argument that homosexuality is natural or inborn has little persuasive power for Muslims. Who has the most girl friends in Rumania? A shepherd! Same whole sex is an aberration of taste and mind; it is abnormal, unnatural and against tenets of Islam and Christianity, and its defence by an expert or a politician like Tony Blair (WMDS liar) is absurd and misleading. It is simply compromising your religious beliefs with lewdness and immorality.
Why do some sins offend us more than others? Why are there such strong feelings about homosexuality? When the victim is four years old and is seriously injured this feeling of hate and vengeance is understandable. But when the victim is sixteen years old, and the lynch party of paedophiles were engaged in exorcising their own demons, expiating their own lust, we the normal human being vehemently condemn it.
Which is worse: the man who has sex with a six year old girl or a six year old boy? If you immediately answer the one with the boy, perhaps you would do well to examine your own proclivities. A six year old child is not a suitable object of sexual desire regardless of gender. I would recommend that a homosexual should buy a pound of cow dung and insert his penis in it to get the same sexual gratification as with engaging in the same - hole sex.

Ah, yes. Nothing of substance to say so all you can do is blather about 'reality challenged'.. whatever that means.
It's not 'reality' challenged to notice that Vermont's own legislature just recognized that a ban on same sex marriage is by definition unconstitutional. More states now than ever before just allowed gay marriage to become legal. It's happening right under your nose and there's not a damned thing you can do about it- and that pisses you off, doesn't it? Because you'd rather sit at a computer all day long insulting anyone who isn't like you instead of going out and WORKING for the change you keep harping on.
If you even once got to know any gay people you'd realize that they are among some of the most loving, caring, warm hearted people you'd ever met.
I happen to be fortunate enough to have found the love of my life.
He just happens to be a guy- but I'd still love him if he was a girl. I'm happily married and would LOVE to see my gay friends have an opportunity to share in the happiness that marriage can bring me.
All you can do is 'name call' people you don't even know.

d. Heaven(if it exists) is a Spirit State as per Aquinas and JPII i.e. no bodies to include glorified bodies allowed.
e. The Physical Resurrection, Ascension and Assumption therefore did not take place. (This is also taught in graduate theology classes at many major Catholic universities).

h. There was therefore no Immaculate Conception.
i. Happiness in Heaven (if it exists) is not a gradient but is dependent on the number of souls present.
j. Purgatory is possible but has no Scriptural foundation.

Nowhere in your book does your 'simple preacher man' talk about what gay folks do on their own time. Or that you should go around blaming people for the diseases they contract.
Shoot, I know that and I'm not even a Christian.
Some questions for you:
If you believe in hell as a 'possibility', that means that you're not exactly talking about 'reality' here. 'Satan spirits' and 'soul contamination' have no meaning if you're living in the 'right here, right now reality' of the world.
How do you know people even have souls? On what reality based evidence do you make this assumption?
Heaven as 'dependent on the number of souls present?' should we take a number and get in line? What would constitute a completely happy heaven?
You've also cut your God off at the knees by denying him his omniscience.
Why are Adam and Eve mythological but the 'people go to heaven/hell' doctrine not so?

What evidence do you have for the existence of heaven/hell?
What evidence do you have for the existence of your man there?
and the million dollar question- what evidence do you have that you know anything about what gay people (or any other people other than you, for that matter) do behind closed doors- and what right do you have to insist that other people's evidences be presented without presenting any of your own?
See, you can't have it both ways. Trying to pretend that you "KNOW' what others do with no basis in reality and insisting that others provide evidence for feeling differently when you do not do the same when asked simple questions is disingenuous at best, and marks you as a bigot and a homophobe at worst.
Can't hide behind the 'free country' excuse when you demand so many 'empirical' answers from those around you. You can dish it out all you want but you simply cannot take it. If I'm wrong in this, by all means- the world awaits your 'evidence' with bated breath.

From below, on top, backwards, forwards, from this side of the Moon and from the other side too, gay sexual activity is still mutual masturbation caused by one or more complex sexual defects. Some defects are visually obvious in for example the complex maleness of DeGeneres, Billy Jean King and Rosie O'Donnell. Of course not all having these abnormal tendencies, show it outwardly as alluded to in the following synopsis:
From Wikipedia:
"Biology and sexual orientation is research into possible biological influences on the development of human sexual orientation. No simple cause for sexual orientation has been conclusively demonstrated, and there is no scientific consensus as to whether the contributing factors are primarily biological or environmental. Many think both play complex roles.[1][2] The American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Psychological Association have both stated that sexual orientation probably has multiple causes.[3][4] Research has identified several biological factors which may be related to the development of a heterosexual, homosexual or bisexual orientation. These include genes, prenatal hormones, and brain structure. Conclusive proof of a biological cause of sexual orientation would have significant political and cultural implications. [5]"

Hmmm lets see, in gay sexual activity, who plays the guy and who plays the gal? Who is on top and who is on the bottom? A coin flip? To say the least, an unusual situation. Then there are those "made in China" toys/strap-ons. Lets hope the FDA has checked them for lead and other toxic components. And do said "toys" come with sanitizers and/or sterilization instructions.
Lots and lots of "gays" doing their hot and heavy things on Internet tube sites but nothing about coin flipping, who is on first, and sanitizers sites?? There must be some "Gaying It For Dummies" books out there somewhere. Hmmm, I wonder if said books/sites have to have FDA and CDC approval??
The general population to include many of the voters in California, rightly or wrongly, find gay sexual activities, married or not, to be "yucky" and unusual and typically associate such activity with the spread of AIDS which is of course wrong. Said AIDS epidemic in the gay male community at the start of the AIDS crises will always remain unfortunately a stigma on the gay community.
" And after all of this rhetoric, gay "marriages" simply simplify and somewhat sanitize what are still "yucky" acts caused by a variant gene(s) and/or hormone imbalance. One wonders if stem cell research will find a cure??
Hmmm, would the embryos formed from the sperm of gay guys and the eggs from gay gals make more ethical embryos for this and other types of research?? "
There are Impressive lists of gay people who did not let their yucky defect get in the way of being a contribution to society. Unfortunately, they were not able to contribute to the evolutionary process of DNA improvement via procreation.
And one will never know whether they would have achieved even greater achievements without said defect.

Maybe you ARE gay or something. Sounds like you know a lot about such things. The only logical way one would find this out is to have been a participant.
" who plays the guy and who plays the gal? Who is on top and who is on the bottom? "
Who cares? it's really not my business, but somehow you're making it yours. All this extensive knowledge goes to show that you've more than just a passing fancy in this. You're gay- but don't want anyone to know.
That explains a LOT.
"Lots and lots of "gays" doing their hot and heavy things on Internet tube sites "
Wow- you sure do spend a LOT of time on the computer, don't you? The only way you would know or care is by watching those internet sites. WOW. What would your wife say if she knew??
"The general population to include many of the voters in California, rightly or wrongly, find gay sexual activities, married or not, to be "yucky""
No, that's YOUR word. The beauty of it though is that they don't get to have a say in who people love. It didn't work when people didn't want whites to marry blacks, and it won't work here. Equal treatment is equal treatment. The majority won't get to make this call because it would be unconstitutional to say so.
And quite frankly, it's a small, but very vocal minority who want to pass such a law. Since it was struck down as unconstitutional in Vermont, it just slammed the door on the 'activist judge' argument once and for all.
"Unfortunately, they were not able to contribute to the evolutionary process of DNA improvement via procreation."
BS. Melissa Etheridge has a child. (I think it's more than one, too.) So do a lot of the gay folks I know. They simply find a surrogate to supply the missing side but their genetic line continues. And they make great parents who won't shut their child out just for being different.
"Said AIDS epidemic in the gay male community at the start of the AIDS crises will always remain unfortunately a stigma on the gay community.
If it does, you will be a contributing factor in making sure that does, no matter how wrongheaded it might be."
Give it up, CCNL and come out of the closet.

CCNL,
Who's on top isn't written in stone for hetero couples. We straight folks have been known to do it man on top, woman on top (cowgirl or reverse cowgirl), on our sides, doggie style, oral (cunnilingus, fellatio, or 69), anal, and employing the use of various toys, often all in the same love-making session.
According to your parameters, when my husband and I make love, it's nothing more than mutual masturbation, since we are both infertile and we enjoy several different organ/orifice combos.
Guess it's a good thing neither of us is CAtholic, since we're not about to give up sex just because we can't make babies, and we're not about to limit our desire to give each other pleasure to missionary position (our least favorite, actually).

WaPo keeps blocking my post, so I'll try again with some uncinventional spelling.

*laughing* Still with the 'Who 'plays' the guy and who 'plays the girl?'
What is this, 1959? :)
That's just *such* a laughable demonstration of ignorance on a subject about which CCNL wants to come on here, in fact, gainsay all the Catholic theology he likes, while of course, demanding they (and everyone else) obey the Church in the matter of his obsessive homophobia and insistent dehumanization.
Frankly, I don't frequent porn sites on the Internet, but here's one little secret, the vast majority of the 'girl on girl' porn anywhere actually *isn't* lesbians or for the 'benefit' of lesbians.... it's for the benefit of men who like to fantasize they *are* looking in on lesbians or whatever the Hel they're thinking. :) Nothing to do with whose lovemaking involves 'love' or is 'mutual masturbation' or if in fact, anyone should have a legal say about it if it *was.*

Anyway, I've had the suspicion before, about CCNL, but it seems his tracts above, finally new material, clearly illustrate that he doesn't even *like* much of Christianity, *apart* from the arrogant, self-righteous, ignorant authority, and the historical and ongoing bigotries and hypocrisies.
Fact is, CCNL, as much as I have plenty of bones to pick with some forms of Christianity, (And I doubt, having heard from the man in his own words that Professor Crossan would much like to hear you claiming to be informed in this by his ideas) ...what you talk here isn't *even* Christianity by most standards. It's just claiming to have inherited the authority and claims to rights-to-dictate.
i. e.: It's just being a Neocon.

"She is treated like any other family member."
Let me guess. Loved by most of the family, ignored by CCNL except when being pumped for every detail of her sex life so as to give him an understanding of what gay people do based on 'observation'. This is bordering on pathology, you know.
CCNL is nothing but a coward who nominally clings to Christianity even though by most standards that I've heard of isn't- but claims to live in the 'real world' in order to hang around here calling others names while demanding evidence for others' beliefs that he refuses to provide for his own.
Finally, the jig is up.
MMA Paganplace, Lepi!
The site's gone weird in the past few days or so. It still requires registration and signing in to post, but doesn't seem to offer the 'click here to comment' except on a few threads, different ones each time that take some digging to look for.
I guess I just got tired of the same old cut-and-paste rhetoric/name-calling from CCNL and wanted to find out if there was any substance to him at all. Just been trying to get him to understand that his claims of 'living in the real world' without anything 'supernatural' only go so far. He's been exposed as nothing more than a neo-con in agnostic/atheist clothing who simply seems to enjoy telling others how to live.

Wow!!!
The pagans are off and ranting this fine Easter!!!
And indeed huband and wife in their infertile years still have intercourse analogous to the attraction of an electron has for a proton. And indeed infertile lesbians or gay-guys still mutually masturbate analogous to to the attraction of two electrons. Infertility does not change basic physics and/or sanitation considerations .

CC,
So it's hunky-dory with you and your god if hetero couples want to have sex using "non-traditional" or "unsanitary" organ-orifice combos, but not same-sex couples. Got it.

Where did anyone say unsanitary sex in any life-style is OK?? And anything sanitary is a "go" in "electron-proton" marital-bliss sex!!! Ditto for the bliss of monogamous "mutual masturbation".

This is an absolutely utterly absurd statement having nothing to do with anything. Electrons and protons?? Are you serious?? I can't WAIT to hear your so-called 'evidence' for this one.
How many people have you interviewed about their sex life to have anything to say at all about their 'sanitation'? You and your spouse must wrap yourselves up in full body rubber costumes before doing it, don't you?
You really get off on this stuff, don't you? This is a pathology- get some help, old man-before someone in your family calls the cops on you.
WOW.

I see no rants in their statements- they're just LAUGHING THEIR BUTTS OFF AT YOU. The rants are all coming from you, as evidenced by your inability to use only one punctuation mark at the end of your sentences.

Sanitary - we both shower on a daily basis.
I guess it's a good thing you're not monitoring our bedroom. You'd probably be hosing us down with Lysol from a power washer.
AFIC, anything consenting adults agree to do in their bed (or on their den rug, or on top of their piano, or on their living room sofa, or on their kitchen table, or in their garden shed, or in their tree house, or any other location screened from prying eyes) is just fine.
