Obama Wants "God" in Oath
According to CNN, President-elect Obama has asked Chief Justice John Roberts to include the words "so help me God" in the oath of office he will take Jan. 20. Roberts has said he will do so.
The information came from an affidavit filed Jan. 9 by Roberts' court counselor in a pending lawsuit by atheists opposed to any mention of God in the inaugural ceremonies. A federal judge has scheduled a hearing on the case for Thursday.
Stay tuned.
In a related development, Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson said he has agreed to give the invocation at an inaugural event this Sunday at the Lincoln Memorial. The installation of Robinson, an openly gay man, has generated a lot of controversy in the Anglican Communion worldwide.

I do not care that Mr. Obama wants Chief Justice Roberts to add the words "So help me god" to the oath of office. Mr. Roberts should read the oath of office as obligated by the Constitution of the United States. If Mr. Obama wishes to add "So help me god" at the end, the Constitution also protects his right of free speech once the official oath has been duly rendered. Mr. Roberts should be reprimanded if he adds those words. I can only wish that Mr. Obama would not add them.
