'Focus' Doesn't Get the Joke
Who says right-wing evangelical Christians don't have a sense of humor? Check out this David Letterman-esque bit from Focus on the Family's Stuart Shepard.
Shepard, director of digital media for Focus, wrote and starred in the "Pray for Rain" video and posted it on the Focus site July 30. He told the Colorado Springs Gazette that it was meant to be "mildly humorous."
Unfortunately, Focus on the Family officials didn't think so. They pulled the video earlier today.
In the video, Shepard wonders if it might be OK to pray for rain on Aug. 28 in nearby Denver, where Barack Obama is scheduled to deliver his acceptance speech for the Democratic presidential nomination. The speech is scheduled to be given at Invesco Field, an outdoor stadium.
"We're not asking for flood-people-out-of-their-houses rain, just good old swamp-the-intersections rain," Shepard says playfully as he walks by Invesco Field. "We're not asking for hail the size of canned hams or lightning bolts to set the bunting on fire, just rain. Beautiful rain. Networks-cant'-see-the-podium rain. Attendees-can't-walk-back-to-the-indoor-arena-without-asking-for-hipwaders rain."
Shepard stops short of asking Pat Robertson to direct a hurricane Obama's way, but he finally gets to the message portion of the program. Why is he asking people to pray for rain of biblical proportions to fall on Obama's speech? "I'm still pro-Life and still in favor of marriage being only between one and one woman, and I'd like the next president who will select Supreme Court justices to agree," he explains.
OK, he killed the punchline, but he's not the one who killed the video. Tom Minnery, a Focus official, told the Gazette that the video was taken down because several Focus members complained that prayer shouldn't be used to bring harm on someone else. "We are not about confusing people about prayer," Minnery said.
Now that's funny. Who says God doesn't have a sense of humor?
Watch the video. Do you think it's funny?

God certainly has a sense of humor, look at the duckbilled platypus... As for Focus on the Family - I'm sure they have a sense of humor as well. Some of the supporters - not so much. As for not using prayer to harm others, read a little of the Psalms, and some of the prophets. They prayed that God would destroy their enemies all the time and He did!
Oh well, lighten up! Barry's all wet already...

Well, Sandy, Revelations tells us that Jesus is coming back on a white horse to lead the saints in war against Satan, the Antichrist and all his followers (people who support him). So, I guess that makes him a warrior. And if the rumors are true and Barry's the Antichrist (just a little joke there) the Jesus is coming to give him a little smack down.
By the way, what is your definition of humanitarian?

Why don't they try praying for rain in some of the drought-stricken areas of the country, like California or the Southwest? I mean, if they're convinced that God will send rain whenever they want Him to, why not do some good with it?
Oh, I forgot. This is Focus on the Family we're talking about.

But c'mon: the video had elements of funny in it. Religion is pretty interesting if one confines oneself to observing its sociological and political manifestations, but beyond that it's kind of - don't be offended, please - it's kind of a crock, no? Historically, it is too easy to trace, and very soon becomes obvious that gods are either (1)products of mankind or (2) appallingly incompetent. Or both, I suppose. In the event, the video was harmless and Focus' reaction to it another free giggle. Of course it's not funny.
FOF pretends to be a religious organization but, like so many right-wing hate groups masquerading as "churches" and the like, they are merely using that designation to avoid taxation. Hopefully the huge Democratic majority that will take over Congress in January, along with President Obama, can begin to dismantle this radical Right machine, starting with the faux-Christianists.
The fact is that FOF and their ilk are *political* organizations, and they should be regulated (and taxed) as such. It also would help if they would read the Bible a little more carefully -- I don't remember where Jesus preached that you should HATE your fellow man. But maybe I just missed it ...

Sorry, 'rmorrow,' but the onus is on you and your Christianist buddies to show you're not hateful. Whenever one group goes out of its way to malign, condemn, judge, heal, "pray for" or otherwise manipulate another group that's basically just trying trying to live their lives, then it's easy to see which has the mala fide intentions. Though I have personal spiritual leanings, I am not Christian and don't beleive in the Christian god, nor really any single "god" for that matter. Get off your cross and try to see things from my view: FoF and other far-right political activist groups are using faith to perpetrate an agenda, one largely at odds with the supposed "values" Christians espouse. They're despicable and increasingly exposed for the exploitive hypocrites they are. I was born well before they were around, and will be alive to see them go. True faith is not worn on lapels or car bumpers. My father, a Nixon-era Catholic doctor conservative, said the Moral Majority, FoF and their kind are cowards until someone stands up to them. So why act shocked and indignant, your little fingers quivering with rage, when they DO get called out, sometimes by their own? Get over yourself.

Every day there are millions of "christians" praying that harm will come to people. Don't they pray for our troops to be successful in their "war on terror". For our troops to be successful that means that the enemy they are fighting must fail. In war failure usually means death. Basically they praying that our soldiers and the God to whom they pray, will kill the "enemy". We also know that war means killing not only the soldiers, but the civilians who are unintended victims. They better take a closer look at themselves when they say they don't pray to bring harm to others. Mark Twain had a good piece on prayer during war that I'm sure you could find on google if you want to see his view on praying for our soldiers to be successful in war.

Then I guess we weren't founded by religious nuts like yourself, who want prayer in school apparently, but people who were monotheistic, polytheistic and just plain fun to hang with (see Ben Franklin).

"Go on up, you baldhead!" 24 He turned around, looked at them and called down a curse on them in the name of the LORD. First, I didn't find the video that funny. Well intentioned, I'm sure, but not funny. In fact, I find his point of view worrisome.
As a Christian, I continue to be baffled by why so many other Christians feel the need to get so wound up about forming a government that reflects their religious views. Throughout history, Christians have rarely lived within a power structure that reflected true Christian values, and when any attempt was made toward a theocracy, the results were disastrous. Remember the Dark Ages?
Don't get me wrong...I want a just, moral government like most people, but I don't feel that any amount of legislation will change the hearts of people. That must come from within, and must be a personal decision. If more people were searching their own hearts and making sound personal decisions, I doubt there'd be any need for Christians to feel that they have to shape our government.
Consider this: a democracy reflects the true hearts and minds of its people, and ours doesn't say much about us. Anyone, secular or otherwise, would fairly admit that we continue to slide downhill when it comes to personal accountability , responsibility, and commitment to the common good. For a nation that claims to be largely Christian, this doesn't say much about us, and in fact reflects negatively on us as a spiritual community. In short, many of us claim one thing but insist on living our lives exactly as we please.
Christ, while on trial for His life, clearly states that His spiritual kingdom is not of this world, and that's why His followers didn't rise up against the powers-that-were. The Apostle Paul goes on to tell us that we're to be content within whatever power structure is in place, because any earthly institution in control is not the kingdom we should be focusing on. Why don't all Christians (and that would include me), focus on living the way Christ asks us to, by treating all people with the same love He demonstrated for us? That's the most important commandment, and if we all actually lived that way, and taught by positive example, it might just change more hearts and minds than any amount of religiously-inspired legislation.

Look. This is just another example of the sort of juvenile attitudes of so many of these people on the religious right. But, it isn't just those religious fanatics that tend to express such juvenile attitudes. Rush Limbaugh used his silly little perch as America's most popular talk show host to try and sabotage the democratic primary with his ridiculous "Operation Chaos". And, the mainstream media is no immune from participation and pandering to such attitudes. The reason a bloated, angry carp like Limbaugh can get away with creating such chaos in the American election is because the media refuse to hold him accountable. Indeed, the media aided and abetted his silly, hate based crusade.
Americans are always asking what went wrong, why does the rest of the world seem to hate us? My reaction is: What's not to hate? Why do you all persist in glorifying the worst human beings on this planet? Why does the American media nauseatingly pay obeisance to these hateful, angry, perpetually malcontented scolds who seem to take great satisfaction in the sort of pathetically silly activities as this Focus on the Family video. I find nothing funny at all about what these types of hateful groups do. That is precisely how the Nazis came into power in Germany in the 1930s.

Dobson and his group of money grubbing swine have misled, lied to people, and humiliated the church for too long and it is time to call them on it. James Dobson and Focus, any of your followers, you do not represent Christianity, you are NOT CHRISTIAN'S by your words and deeds. Your's is a pseudo-christian cult that perverts God's word, takes scripture out of context, and twists Christ's teaching beyond recognition. Those of you claiming that Dr. Dobson and those who listen to his programs are "not Christians" -- what are you basing that statement on?
How do you define a Christian? Is it according to the popular movements of the day, or is it according to the teachings of Christ?
Unfortunately, it appears from many of the postings here, you are defining a Christian by your own standards, issues that are important to you, not on what the Bible teaches.
Just like so many other words, "Christian" has been watered down so much that followers of Christ now need to find a new way to identify themselves -- maybe we should go back to how Christians were identified in the time of Christ, as followers of "the way"; after all, Jesus said he is the way, the truth, and the life. No man comes to the Father but through me." Believing Christ's words used to be what defined a "Christian."

It wasn't my post, but if I had to hazard a guess why some don't think Dr. Dobson is a Christian, I'd say it's because he doesn't "love God and neighbor" as scripture commands. And he tramples on "the least of these" for political gain, again contrary to the teachings of Jesus.
You talk about wanting your Christianity not watered down? Get away from the view that it's a get-out-of-jail-free-just-because-I-believe card and move toward actually living your life according to His teachings.

For those of you who keep saying 'Focus is wrong', 'Focus is not Christian', etc- please read what Focus as an organization actually did:
Quote:
Tom Minnery, a Focus official, told the Gazette that the video was taken down because several Focus members complained that prayer shouldn't be used to bring harm on someone else. "We are not about confusing people about prayer," Minnery said.
If you disagree with the above statement please give reasons why.

I hope you follow up on August 29th Mr. Waters-
I noticed the prayer advocate left open the possiblity that his prayers may not be answered and the rain may not come- a lack of faith perhaps?

"What is Christianity?" - You play the same sort of intellectually dishonest game that politician's play when they get caught with the hand in the cookie jar... define "...." I would have thought that anyone reading the Bible would understand that we are expressly told to AVOID politics. That nonsense garbage Dobson blathers about, "render to Cesar...", is such a twist on what Christ said I finds it amazing that any Christian falls for it. The Pharasee's attempted to trap Christ by challenging him about the currancy he was to use to pay his taxes. If he used Roman coins, with a human portrait on them, he as violating a Jewish law about "graven images", but if he didn't use them he was in violation of Roman law concerning valid currancy for paying taxes. His answer cut through the intellectually dishonest trap.
By the same token, the traps set for Obama by the Cltinon's and McCain, the games being played by taking what he has said out of context, the thoroughly dishonest and disproven rumprs of his being a Muslim or even born into a Muslim household, are so despicably dishonest that no Christian could repeat them without abandoning entirely their faith. But, and this is imprtnat, this is exactly what James Dobson has done. One can only conclude that Dobson publically announced that he had abandoned his faith in Christ, that he was siding with this world and with Satan. THAT, is the position you are in. Choose to abandon politics and the way of the world, work out your own salvation, our jump right in - hell has plenty of room for people like you.

"Those of you claiming that Dr. Dobson and those who listen to his programs are "not Christians" -- what are you basing that statement on?"
Simple empirical evidence shows that Dobson is a hate-filled piece of crap. If you want to accept him as a real christian - and that's the problem with *non*-terrorist christians - then take him warts and all. Dobson is himself a religious terrorist.
That he has any supporters at all speaks volumes about the cult of personality and the state of brainwashed religious dupes.

Spidermanz goes nuts:
"The doomed people are creating the clouds of fire for themselves and if it starts falling they might pray for the kind of rain Mr. Shepard was asking for."
You do the praying, dipwad. Of all the thousands of deities created by man, the christian one is one of the worst-defined, with powers attributed to it that it obviously does not have.
Take your whiny self-hating crap religion and shove it. No one - NO ONE - knows if and what comes after death. Certainly not idiot christian robots like you.
Now, wipe that spittle off your chin and go kill an abortion doctor.

Without assuming there is an actual 'true' religion, it's safe to argue that all false religions will exhibit one or more of these five manifestations:
1. The requirement to proselytize
Any God who is too powerless to reach his or her creation directly must not be a true God worthy of being followed. Humans are the worst vehicles for broadcasting knowledge when you consider two people who see the same exact event will tell two different stories about it, not to mention when they're asked to tell second and third-hand stories told them by others. False religions are easily exposed when they send out their members to make more followers for their impotent deity.
2. The requirement to pay a tithe
Any God who cannot afford to support his or her believers in their chosen doctrines must not be a true God worthy of being followed. If God created everything, then God certainly doesn't need his followers to pay his way. Why would God ask us on a date and then make us pick up the tab? False religions can be deftly divined when they start asking you for money.
3. Being founded by a human prophet
Any God who relies on fallible human beings to speak on his or her behalf is not worthy of being followed. Using a human only leads to different interpretations and understandings, which is why there are no major religions that have not splintered into contradicting congregations. False religions can be quickly culled from the pack when you find out they were created by a human prophet.
4. Fear-based decisions
Any God who uses the threat of violence against humans if they don't follow his or her word is not worthy of being followed. The threat of violence removes free choice and creates an inability to know if a follower really loves the God or merely feigns love out of fear of the afterlife. False religions can be immediately identified when they threaten you with eternal torture for ignoring their message.
5. Reward-based incentives
Any God who must bribe people to follow him or her is not worthy of being followed. What kind of God needs to rely on the selfish motivations of humans to get them as his or her followers? What kind of God needs to use payoffs to get people to show their adoration? False religions can be overtly outed when they try to entice you to follow their beliefs with promises of rewards and prizes.
In summary, if your religion or faith-based system of beliefs exhibits one or more of these characteristics, you can be sure it is man-made dogma and most certainly is a false religion.

We need to ban all abortions and all birth control. America's population is only growing by 10,000 per day. The world is only adding 220,000 more people everyday. There are not enough Morons in the world, but there are plenty of Agents of Intolerance Religious Frauds and plenty of Ignorant Idiots willing to give money to those Frauds.

Two men run for the office of the POTUS. Both men have wives who are afflicted with a serious malady. Both men commit the sin of adultery. One confesses to his wife, asks for forgiveness and works hard to save his marriage. The other divorces the first wife and marries the much younger, rich adulteress. Now, if you ran a so-called "Christian" organization named "Focus on the Family", which candidate would you endorse?

IDoLoveJesus: " I have been fairly successful in my prayers being answered."
Bully for you. Does God love you more than other christians? Are you somehow more worthy? Do you do something special that God likes? If so, would you tell us what it is, so we can enjoy more success in getting our prayers answered?

trueChristian, count the numbers of self-described christians in this country, compare that to the number of liberals and hippies.
Whose butt are the politicians kissing the hardest, with the most tongue? How many political leaders, at all levels local, statewide and national, are hippies?
This country is being run by christians. All of these bad things are happening now, in a country, run by christians. They are happening at their highest level of occurrence in the parts of this country where christianity is truly rampant.
I'm not saying that christianity causes these bad things, I'm saying that christianity is lying to itself when it says it can stop it.
And you are a fool.

To those that prayed for rain:
...and God said, let there be rain. And then there was rain and He saw that it was good.
Be careful what you ask for, you just got it. Funny how karma boomerangs on people with hate in their hearts.
