Signs & Wonders: The Power of Monks

Buddhist monks stage a protest calling for Tibet's independence in Gansu, China, April 9, 2008. (Kwon Young-suck - AP)

In the theater of global public opinion, you can really do no worse than having young Buddhist monks protest your actions. You can call them satanic or terrorists or murderers or whatever you want but these Buddhists have been stealthily crafting this image of themselves as the ultimate in righteousness for thousands of years.

Chinese officials, struggling against this rising tide of discontent, hit back with statements such as one made in late March that the Dalai Lama was "a wolf in monk's clothing. A devil," he said, "with a face of a human but the heart of a beast."

This week's image is from Wednesday, when Buddhist monks interrupted a government-led tour for journalists through Western China. They waved Tibetan flags and protested that authorities were depriving them of human rights. Meanwhile, city officials in San Francisco decided it was best to sneak the Olympic torch rather than parade it, after the protests in Paris and London. And to top things off, the president of the International Olympic Committee spoke out, albeit briefly, against the Chinese government and encouraged them to improve human rights and media access.

A lot of the debate about this has centered around the question of Western countries getting involved in Chinese affairs, but what I find exciting is that the March uprising by a small group of monks in Tibet has had such a large and continuing impact. Public relations is theater and at this point, the Chinese may want to realize that with monks and the Dalai Lama, they are up against the visual equivalent of abused puppies. People who have spent their lives praying and meditating are hard to paint as evil, that's what Signs and Wonders teaches us this week! Next week, more!

Rioters led by the monks had killed innocent people and destroyed property, even the Western media confirms this fact. The fact that these monks could even interrupt a government-led tour shows how much freedom they are given.

If they are given so much freedom, than why are they protesting? Why does the democratic nations allow their citizens to openly critized they government when China, Vietnam, and North Korea only allow "government sanction reglion"? Why are these government block or monitor internet sites such as youtube.com, wikipedia.org?

If Tibet has always been part of China, than what happen in 1949 that cause so many to want their independance? What kind of government still educate it citizens to look up to Mao, when he led to 40 million Chinese to starve to death?

There is nothing wrong with the Chinese People, it is the Government...the government that continues to take things away from it citizens in the name of the people.

Hi Lee,

How is the rioter or killer ? The whole world knows it very well, if Chinese government is so confident to prove that Tibetan are rioter let the media reporter go to Tibet freely and verify for them self the actual situation.
In this modern world propaganda won't work, Why communist government is so reluctant to let the red cross go to Tibet for the medical treatment.People like you are disgrace to this democratic country.
Please don't spoil the atmosphere of this great democratic country with your outdated mentality and corruption which was well known in San Francisco

Mr. DL is going to host a party to celebrate the success in his career and invites everyone to join. Many people want to join because they want a similar career success and the party is a good chance to see other people. I totally support Mr. DL to host this party, but he has to grant his wife the maximum freedom to sleep with me because some of my friends think I am more suitable to sleep with her. If Mr. DL does not do it, one of his kids, who is actually my blood (that is a long story, I am sure you do not want to hear about it), and my kids and my friends will protest and threaten to boycott the party. Some of them do so because there is some chance they can sleep with Mrs. DL after I had full access to her. Some of them do so because I told them that I would offer them a dinner. Actually, I offer them a chance to offer me a dinner since I am such a great man. A lot of people do not support the boycott. I and my friends believe they are either Mr. DL's children or his friends and they are brainwashed by him. If he punishes his kid who does protesting and beating other kids, he violates human rights. My friends will blame him. Many people suggest Mr. DL to stop punishing his kid and to talk to me on the matter immediately because they do not want to see Mr. DL punishing his kid or whatever reasons. I and Mr. DL have been talking for many times in the past. Mr. DL only allows me to visit his family, but I want to sleep with his wife. Of course, that is the first step. She may well become my wife later because I and the kid will decide to kick Mr. DL out. We have not done so because Mr. DL does not allow me to sleep with Mrs. DL. I am very sad that we have not reached an agreement after these many years. Mr. DL is now blaming me for directing the protest against his party. I have nothing to do with it. I swear to the God, I am a peace loving person. I am not a demon.

I grew up in China and I do not agree with the government on many issues.

But this time, I have to say those Tibetan Chinese were not just protesting; they were looting and killing innocent people. For the sake of humanity, those criminal acts can not be left unpunished in the name of democracy or religion.

Every country has its own enemies, some of them are its own citizens. Try test your freedom and follow John Phillip Walker Lindh. Soon you will find yourself enjoying your waterboarding in Guantanamo Bay.

Whether or not Tibet has always been part of China is not important. It is now and no government disagrees including Dalai Lama himself and his own government in exile, at least in public.

So, I would like to ask those of you who are so misinformed about China, will you show up for IRA for the 2012 Olympics in London?

Earnestly, I hope you will not and the world will actually be better off.

China annexed Tibet in 1956. The Tibetans are not Chinese, but an entirely different ethnic group. So many have fled that their children and grandchildren have never seen their homeland.

It is an international disgrace that the Olympics are being held in China, a tribute to international greed, lust for free trade. I recently met a young Tibetan, born and raised in Nepal, like so many other refugees. He is passionate about his homeland and informs me that as the Olympics draw nearer, there will be demonstrations throughout the US. I certainly hope so, and I hope they are continuous throughout the games. I plan to participate.

This loathsome Chinese empire, with its endless human rights violations should not be a partner with the US in anything.

I purchase nothing made in China. I urge all others to do the same. This will be the first time in memory that I do not watch the Olympics. Would that the rest of the nation would follow suit.

To Tsewang:
China did allow the media to go into Tibet after the riots to witness the damage the rioters caused. Also, this article is about the Western media in China encountering the monks. This shows China is not as repressive because if it really is, the monks would not even get the chance to meet the reporters.

The monks protest that they have no freedom but their very act of protesting show that they do have the freedom to protest. So what they say and do is very contradictory.

CHINA NEEDS TO GET OUT OF TIBET. IT HAS NO RIGHT BEING THERE. IT IS OUTRAGEOUS THAT THE OLYMPICS ARE BEING HELD IN BARBARIC CHINA.

IT IS A MURDEROUS REGIME. DO NOT WATCH THE OLYMPICS ON TV. DO NOT BUY PRODUCTS MADE IN THE PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC OF CHINA.

PARTICIPATE IN DEMONSTRATIONS IF YOU CAN.

to Cung:

"If they are given so much freedom, than why are they protesting?"

You only see those so-called protester (lots them are westerner, some of them even dont konw where is Tibet.) through the media, but you should really go to Tibet to find the truth.

for someone said Tibetan is completely different ethnic to china. Are you trying to say that only a single ethnic can form a country? Did you konw that china include 56 ethnics? ie. Manchu,Mongol and so many others.

For a more considered and balanced look at Tibetan Buddhism, pick up a copy of Shambhala Sun magazine, www.shambhalasun.com, or Buddhadharma, thebuddhadharma.com. The author of this blog , Claire, would do well to inform herself not only about Tibet, but about the view and practice of Buddhism.

The goal sounds noble for some Americans to boycott Chinese products but not for average families who are struggling in the current recession. Instead, people should be encouraged to keep Wal-Mart in business with the stimulus package many will be receiving so that more Americans can make ends meet.

Even for those who are privileged to claim not to purchase anything made in China, it may be a delusion:

The keyboard you are typing on is probably made in China.
Open your computer case, ask someone if you do not know how or check with your vendor, you should not be surprised that many components inside are made in China.
Your phone line/cable is most likely made in China even if your router/modem is not.
Ask your Internet service providers if they are guilty of using anything made in China; I bet they are.
Last but not least, check with the web master for the very page you are writing on, chances are: you are using a service only made possible with products made in China

Take my advice:

Forget politics, lay back and watch American athletes compete in the Beijing Olympics.

Comparing Tibetan monks to the IRA???? Calling the Dalai a beast?? We know who the real terrorists are: The Communist Party of China, the bestiality unleashed by that thug Mao and perpetrated by his successors. This is no reflection on the Chinese people. They are not a monolithic monster out to take over the world. The Chinese I know are a truly kind people.
The lack of religious, cultural and personal freedom in China is a fact. That we should protest it is our duty. Just imagine a kinder China! For the record, I protested the Malaysians persecution of Chinese and Indians.

After reading reports and watching videos made by journalists and foreign tourists showing innocent Han chinese civilians being beaten to death, I consider it a sin to not speak up against such evil acts, just because we hate the Chinese govt. so much.

Instead of protesting Olympic torch, we should have spoken up against the torching of the chinese girls by the Tibetan rioters.

Oh and by the way, you rightfully call the Dalai Lama a non-evil person. But you disregard his opposition to the Tibetans who murdered 22 Han Chinese and severely beat 600 more.

As far as I'm concerned you cannot speak for the Dalai Lama either, and you pollute his name just by pretending he's a disregarding of human life as you.

Communist China is a bully that invaded and occupied Tibet since the 1950's. The Dalai Lama has been working through nonviolent means for "autonomy", not independence. Even that, Communist China refuses to give. Americans should be able to empathize with the Tibetans since America was founded on the principles of democracy, individual freedom, justice and pursuit of happiness. If Communist China wants to be accepted by the international community, it should abide by certain rules. China cannot have it both ways.

"What do you see in living color and silence?"

It's kind of straining credibility to blame the Dalai Lama for the behavior of people who haven't been allowed to hear from him for fifty years.

Just in case that was hard somehow.
