Paris Hilton with her Ashton Kutcher-provided spiritual advisor. (AP)
Each Wednesday (okay, this one is a little late), we'll select an image that gives us some insight on religion in the world today. It's a complicated subject and so I figured we'd have our inaugural image be on the complicated side: behold Paris Hilton with her guru.
Earlier in March, Ms. Hilton -- heiress, reality TV and sex tape star -- spent an awkwardly conspicuous night on the town with a sagely bearded, saffron robed, "guru" who ushered Hilton to LA New Age landmark the Bodhi Tree for some reading and possible spiritual awakening. First her pre-jail time Bible reading and now this?
The Daily Mail put together a nice, pious album of the evening. And whatever you may think of Hilton, she is a savant of the symbolic and her ensemble nods to all spirituality as costume -- low rise pump, off white fishnets, headband, white lace dress, smallish purse and a serious sad look.
Of course, it was a pipe dream that Hilton was seeking divinity and, in fact, her guru turned out to be a bit actor (his MySpace page brags about his role in Pirates of the Caribbean, and includes an album of photos of him as Hilton's shaman). In the end, her actions were for Hilton's real God, the cameras. Sigh.
The scheme had been cooked up by Ashton Kutcher for his new MTV show, "Pop Fiction," which is meant to highlight the madness of the image obsessed fans and paparazzi. Genius! Hilton's lacy get-up and robed-friend underscore how pious behavior is viewed as preposterous in Hollywood these days -- at least the non-Kabbalistic, non-Scientological variety. What's more, Kutcher saw a lesson in the pseudo-spiritual prank, saying, "We're having fun, but we want to say to people, 'Can you really believe everything you read and see?"
A perfect lesson for our first signs and wonders. Next week, more.

Trippin quoted, then commented on: "...pious behavior is viewed as preposterous in Hollywood these days -- at least the non-Kabbalistic, non-Scientological variety."
Trippin's comment: "I have a news flash for you. It's viewed as preposterous by a lot more than Hollywood, who see no difference between the Kabbalistic or Scientoloical varieties you seem to hold in such contempt, this guru-as-fashion-accessory stunt, and the belief in an invisible sky patriarch who watches our every move to decide whether to punish us for eternity."
OK, it's too much to comment on all of this, except to say that Trippin's got a point: I have a Jewish friend who says that my Christianity is shaky because it 'defies reason.' Good point. But this particular story, the guru-as-fashion-accessory, is really about a non-guru. A fake guru! That's the pity of Paris Hilton. She could cover herself in sackcloth and ashes, and if she believed it and it made her life easier, I'd say go for it. But a fake! A prop, just a another piece of stage business to add to her whole phony life. My god, she's an heiress. She has, or will have, millions. (It makes me shudder to think this could have been Liz Taylor's granddaughter - remember Liz's first husband?) Why does she have to cheapen herself as a sex-tape actress, or a pubcrawler, or, now, an alternative-religion fanatic? Women - the feminist movement worked to give us equality with men, to earn the same pay and the same respect men earn, and instead we insist on sharing the same weaknesses they have.

You are right Trippin that I am desirous to generate web traffic to my website; for I know that some people will decide to look into the subject that I am writing about more closely.
I am not nameless; for my name is Josef Sefton and what I am contributing is not spam but valuable information for everyone interested to put under the microscope of their own inspection.
God is for truth and against lies. Study the Koran and you will discover that Isa isn't Jesus of Nazareth.
Study the Koran and you will discover that Jesus of Nazareth died on a cross unlike Isa.
We can reach the risen Jesus Christ on His 0800 number by turning to God in sincere prayer.
If any one is a crackpot I can assure you God will deal with him or her in His own timing.
The use of the armoury of correction and rebuke belongs to an honourable walk before God and all honest people will applaud such behaviour.
It is valid for us all to look for the magnificence of God's mind in His creations: the Greek and Hebrew languages.
We live in a world that wrongly assumes all criticism (especially of a large group of people) is always wrong.
How easy it is to label someone else falsely as a crackpot.
Some observations: Holy Triune God and Allah are not the same. The Author of the holy Bible and the Koran are not the same.
Searchers for God are therefore challenged to research the subject and decide who they want to honour. We can't have one foot dancing for Jesus Christ and the other foot dancing for Allah and expect the Author of the holy Bible to consider us a God-honouring dancer.
Just because modern day Catholicism has an army of 1.1 million adherents and Islam has an army of 1.1 million adherents doesn't make them immune from correction.
Both modern day Catholicism and Islam are corrupt and God's will is for those who are truly desirous to love Him to flee from their false teachings and to keep their eyes riveted on His love letter the holy Bible, His inspired, inerrant, holy Word.
Stop trippin yourself up Trippin and tip toe into line and you'll find that the ultimate truth of the holy Bible will bring true happiness into your heart and you will not treat
this subject so lightly.
Sovereign God Himself is Our most treasured possession. His wisdom is to be found in the Holy Bible. May God bless your sincere efforts richly to know Him more fully.

Some Spam-advertiser who shall go nameless just trying to generate web traffic said: "Grace has a numeric weight of 911 and Jesus has a numeric weight of 888."
If Jesus has an 800 number, would you please give him a call and ask him to straighten out all these evangelical crackpots who think they're on a Crusade against Islam?
And I don't know who Grace is, but it sounds like she needs to go on a diet.

One of the marvellous things about life is that we can research subjects and find out the truth.
When Jesus Christ came up against hypocrisy He labelled it as hypocrisy. Fred is correct to helpfully point out that both Scientology and the Kabala are corrupt, but not correct when he says that Xtianity (Christianity) is an abomination.
Christ is not a joke or a sham. Christ is Fred's Creator and my Creator and He loves us all with an extraordinary love.
When we research the Greek language we find out something very astonishing; namely that the name Jesus and the word Grace differ from each other by the number 23.
Grace has a numeric weight of 911 and Jesus has a numeric weight of 888.
In order to understand the numerical link between Grace and Jesus we find it advantageous to go to the Hebrew language.
The Hebrew language unlike our own English language has 22 letters.
When we group the first and last letter together (1+22) (Alef and Tav) we notice that the number 23 pops up.
In the holy Bible Jesus Christ refers to Himself as the First and the last. Interestingly When God introduced His heavenly Shepherd in the Old Testament He did it at Psalm 23.
Alef is an incredibly important letter in the Hebrew language. It is associated with our sovereign God. Tav is associated with the Cross.
Linking these discoveries all together we learn that at the cross God offers sinful man the gift of grace, God's forgiving of our sins, when we put our trust fully in Jesus (Christ) the first and the last, Our heavenly Shepherd's atoning death.
Faith in Jesus Christ's finished work at Calvary (His glorious victory over sin and death)is the beautiful bridge of reconciliation between sinful man and holy Triune God.

I look forward to your visit.

Fred Evil,
I agree that all religions are cults and shams, but different ones do varying degrees of damage, and cults like Scientology and especially Kabbalah Centre are particularly damaging since they are run by people whose only goal is to wring as much cash out of their marks as possible. They are like the sleaziest, tackiest televangelests you can imagine. They prey on desperation. They prop up sham charities to launder money. (For example, they have a "Red String Project" that took in hundreds of thousands of dollars on behalf of the tsunami victims, then spent it buying pieces of yarn from THEMSELVES at $30 each, then sent the yarn to the victims "for protection". They rake in a fortune, and ship a couple hundred dollars of yarn to a society that has been totally devastated, then tell their members stories about the "miracles and wonders" that have resulted, in order to drum up even more money, for, say, Kabbalah water, which they buy from themselves at $5 for each small bottle, and which they claim has had its "molecular energy charged by the quantum technology of Kabbalistic meditations." Ka-Ching!!! Sickening.

I have little to add to those commentators who have already pointed out that, by any rational standard, Paris Hilton's turning for spiritual nourishment (even if it were sincere rather than faked) is no different from the average Christian's turning to the Bible, God, and Jesus. The main difference being, the Washington Post has no problem writing snickering articles about Paris and her guru--but what if it wrote a snickering comment on George Bush's belief in God?
It's amazing that the average American Christian still just does not get it--just doesn't understand that believing the literalness of the Jesus story puts them in the ranks of believing one of the most preposterous supernatural ghost stories ever written. That does not mean you should stop believing it, but some degree of self awareness would show that you have some connection to reason and logic, in addition to your religious impulses.
America's mainstream Christians, of course, reached a new level of blindness and hypocrisy when Romney's presidential bid led to an outburst of snickering about Mormon doctrine, such as Joseph Smith finding those artifacts of the Angel Moroni, sacred underwear,etc.--in total blindness that to any non-Christian, the Jesus story itself could be viewed in the same light.
My favorite of the current commentaters here, by the way, is Chaotician. Don't miss it.

Religion can be respectable, if practiced with responsible practicality and intellect. But cult phenomenons are also infecting major religions, like the Catholic church. Since many believers leave mainstream churches for cults were they get "miraculous healing" for ten bucks and a message from God by the push of a button, many churches do not do much anymore to curbe the sectarian traits, like speaking in tongues or having visions on a daily basis. Thiese phenomena always open for manipulation.

Oh yes, let's all point and look at Paris Hilton's disparagement of religion, and then the hysterical commentary from folks who feel that Scientology of Kabbala is a joke.
Ask the little girl who recently died of extremely treatable diabetes, because her Xtian parents chose prayer over doctors for her cure.
Religion is a joke as a WHOLE. Kabbalah and Scientology are no less respectable than the abomination known as Xtianity.
They're ALL cults, they're ALL shams.
Tithe THIS.

It's common practice to psychologically de-program those we claim are members of what the majority of society defines as a cult -- that's about the only difference. But in reality, it's all a cult. Just because many people belong to it doesn't change that one iota, so let the deprogramming begin right here.
In summary -- Confucius says: people who ride high horse get hit by low branch.

Flyover America, those the folks that voted for wing-nut?
It has now been some 2000 years since the fellow auditioning for Messiah of the Jewish people was brutally tortured, murdered, and properly buried; only to have people he never met, people he never knew, people who were not even Jewish, resurrect his mangled body in thought if not deed, proclaim him not the Jewish Messiah bringing the Kingdom of God to Earth, but a 1/3 member of the one God providing a path to a Kingdom of God in some spiritual realm that is unattainable until one is dead, buried, and food for the worms! This route to eternal bliss at the feet of the mangled corpse is attained by averring with suitable piety that this man is indeed 1/3 of God, that he was resurrected with his earthly body complete with the mutilations imposed by his Roman killers, that his mom was a virgin, and if some properly trained Priest pours some water and utters some ablutions at your birth, then you are the fast track to this eternal bliss!

There was a man in Israel who was a Kabbalah Center member and when his wife got cancer the Kabbalah Center started shaking him down for contrubutions and volunteer work. By the time she died the Kabbalah Center has taken all his money, all his mother-in-law's money, and even had him quit his job so he could volunteer full time for the Kabbalah Center. He was left with absolutely nothing.
The good news is that he sued the Kabbalah Center and the Kabbalah Center paid him off to drop the suit. They have *tons* of money.

Ironic, considering that Kutcher is a member of the Kabbalah Centre cult, which I guess he can afford, but which soaks it's regular members with $30 pieces of yarn, $500 holy books, a demand of 10% of their income, and then the doosey: when anyone becomes desparately ill, or desparate in any way, the Kabbalah Center descends on them with demands for "painful" amounts of money, in order to "open a channel to receive." Tragic and despicable.

It seems that in this Kabbala / Scientology age we seem to want to see things and be told what to do and be by the "famous beautiful" people.
I thought that we as an American people, while open about our varous faiths, were all respectful of others, and thought deeply about why we believe what we believe.
It seems now that everyone wants to be on the cool religion train, not really beliveing or caring what it tells us.
No, thats not true. Your average citizen of "flyover America." doesn't really care about Paris and her "guru." They care about their kids, their families, and getting the kids to the church, mosque, or temple this week.
