A smart lady I know, Kate Aurthur, has an excellent piece in today's LA Times about the most recent episode of Fox's new game show, "The Moment of Truth."
If you've missed this bizarre new hit, I'll summarize: contestants undergo a pre-show interview strapped to a polygraph and are then asked questions about every deep and dirty secret in their life. On the air, the contestant sits before a couch filled with loved ones, along with an audience that numbers close to 9 million, and are then asked about these questions. If they answer truthfully, money. They have the chance to make $200,000. If their answers are false--based on the pre-interview polygraph results--they get the boot with nothing.
Watch this clip first, and then let's talk.
Holy Cow, right? The short version of the story is that this week's contestant seems to have blown her life to bits in short order for um, zero dollars. She confessed to stealing money from work and avoiding sex with her husband. And then a slew of other not such good things. But she keeps answering truthfully and being rewarded with money.
What is amazing is she's ultimately undone when she answers the question: Do you think you're a good person? She says yes. False! She thinks she's a bad person! Since she confessed to being adulterous and lying it kind of seems like she might have realized her conscience might be in conversation with the polygraph.
I'm not going to deny that this is jaw-dropping TV but if we sit back for a second, one wonders whether contestant Lauren Cleri is one of those former Catholics the Pew poll told us about this week who perhaps has no one else to tell her secrets to now? Are people going on national TV and telling the world their darkest secrets because they are part of this nation's growing number of religiously unaffiliated? Is this the same impulse that sends people up to the altar to blurt out their confession and be born-again? Does the polygraph and a game show host and millions of people leave the contestant awash in a feeling of acceptance and rejuvenation? Is this kind of truth that Lauren Cleri gave up the kind that sets you free?

I am considering being a contestant on this show. I really need the money, but am nervous about all of my dark, twisted past coming to light. Maybe it's not such a good idea, as I'm a teacher.

This was a very uncomfortable thing to watch, and I feel really bad for the husband. If this was the only way, I'd rather know the truth about those questions than not. However, while on public television is not the place. It would be humiliating to have your family and friends (who were probably watching) find out that your wife has cheated on you and she thinks she should be married to another guy. Ouch. That would be hard enough to hear in private.
After these confessions, I found myself hoping and even praying she would lose. She doesn't deserve a pay off for humiliating him like that... talk about lacking any kind of compassion. I do respect him for being able to keep it together. I'd have walked off the set after she said "yes" to her ex.

What a disgusting and offensive show! Perhaps everyone has some secrete and dark or dirty side, so no need for anyone to be judgmental. But try to expose as much as possible the ugly part of human being in public for money and rating is extremely low and shameless. I believe America is heading to self-destruction.

Ok, we could argue that they didn't quite understand what they were getting into when they went on the show. However, they have already been asked EVERY SINGLE QUESTION that is going to be asked again on the show. Therefore, they know just how bad it could get. That woman on Monday simply was a chickensh!t and wanted to humiliate her husband in front of 9 million Americans. What a poor excuse for a human. I laughed myself silly when she lost! Her sub-conscience knew the truth! LOL!!! Oh, and to the person who wrote that they'd like to see Hillary Clinton on the show with Bill next to her....they could put that on pay per view and make enough to settle the national debt! :-}

Trashy shows like this are the reason that American Movie Classics and TVLand exist. There is no moral decency left and the average IQ just continues to fall.I am glad to see I'm actually not alone in my thinking because sometimes it feels like the world is being taken over by idiots and exhibitionist. Come on folks read a book or play a board game with the kids.

People that go on these shows are just looking for their fifteen minutes of fame. The only difference between this and Jerry Springer is that 1) it's in prime time and 2) nobody's throwing chairs.

I think an ad for Hilary clinton is well placed in an article about deception and scandel. Couldn't think of a better place to advertise for the clintons!!
They should hire you!

Well, as it turns out, after the couple was interviewed on Access, it came out that the husband knew about the infidelities, so there you have it. They obviously saw an opportunity to make it on to the show and get some money out of exposing their personal dirt. It's all true, they just went public for the cash, and he feigned surprise when she told.
And it almost worked.
Kind of funny that she lost out on the question that she did, though.

Well, if this show is trully real "reality TV", then it's disgusting, depressing and shameful. It's sad that so many of we Americans can only find entertainment viewing the negative side of human nature. There are few shows that showcase the positive side of humanity, such as Extreme Home Makeover. Such shows are kind of nice, but very few.
The woman on Moment of Truth seems to be motivated by only selfishness and greed. I hope that we as a people grow out of this reality TV phase and seek a higher form of entertainment. I can hope, can't I?
Some people I know have suggested that this show is staged with actors and therefore is harmless, guilty pleasure entertainment. I disagree. Real or staged, this show glorifies publicly the worst of human nature.

Based on what little I have seen of this show, if you have "nothing to hide" you won't be chosen as a contestant. The more scandal in your past, the more likely you are to be chosen. Have to think of the "entertainment value" If it's not embarassing, humiliating or even marriage threatening, I doubt if they are interested.

So the Pope and the Polygraph are both infallible.
But the Polygraph is superior because it doesn't have to be speaking ex cathedra for it to be free of error.
The Pope does.

I love to watch this show each week. I Tivo it and do not miss a moment. If you watched the show this past Monday night you might remember the contestant saying that the money was not important and that she needed to get these things off of her chest. I really think that WAS the truth. She was obviously in a troubled marriage and her family looked to be a bit unstable. If she used this show as a vehicle to open up to her family and get on with repairing whatever may have been wrong, than more power to her. Besides, who in 2008 does not have skeletons in their closet. Stop all the judging.

well people, I'm going on that show "Moment of Truth" if they select me as a contestant. I have nothing to hide. I've never cheated on my spouse, Yes I've stolen money **when I was way younger BTW** There's nothing deep inside me that hasn't been out in the open with my family and friends so therefore I feel I have a shot at winning some money... that is, IF the polygraph test detects my true feelings and is not drowning in my sweat of nervousness but that's just because I'll have on my mind, OMG I'm about to go on national TV!
WHO CARES.. I have nothing to hide and if that poly detects a lie then SO FREEKING WHAT, my friends and family knows the truth...and also, when and IF I'm there with my selected family anf friend(s) we'll just LAUGH AT IT.. we know how to have FUN, it won't mess up MY LIFE!
so HA!

Anyone who actually believes a polygraph has ANYTHING to do with the 'truth' has got a screw loose. There's a reason they aren't admissable in a court of law.
Much less to have to depend on that machine to earn money....
If this isn't the beginnings of the downfall of Rome, I will eat my hat.

I have watched this show a few times, and had my jaw drop more than once.
However, I got to thinking. Save for the few contestants who taped their show prior to the first episode ever being aired, and perhaps really didn't know what they were in for, anyone who has seen it, and still chooses to go on as a contestant HAS to be fully aware of what they are in for.
I can therefore think of only one reason for going on and airing this kind of dirty laundry. If my spouse and I had agreed to divorce and had already aired these issues to each other as a part of the process, we could say to ourselves, "why not make some money from this? We may be divorcing, but at least we can divorce wealthier than we are now." Then, go on the show, divulge our "secrets" and scam the show and the audience.
I can't see any other way that a person could choose to go on this show, knowing the types of questions they ask, and the stuff they seem to be able to dig up on a person.
So, unless someone is just plain mean, and wants to hurt alot of people, my guess is that we're going to be seeing alot of "secrets" exposed that in reality, aren't really surprises to the people on the show. They just appear to be. After all, it's just television, folks.

I find the whole premise of the show (and yes I have not watched it) discusting. Remember the game Scruples? My family and friends had played it a few times and almost all had ended in a terrible fight. There is just too much negative crap floating around, too much offensive, degrading, fear-ridden crap. I believe in free speech, I really do, I despise the Bush administration and their too too Christian beliefs. But PEOPLE, why are you all so interested in seeing people hurt, betrayed, angered, made to cry? What the hecks going on this country, why do you watch this garbage?

A follow up -- I just learned that the rules of this show are such that 21 questions must be answered before the contestant can win the maximum amount of money. So a contestant who answers every question truthfully, and goes for the maximum prize, should expect to lose unless polygraphs are accurate more than about 95% of the time. My quick searching around for accuracy estimates online suggest that 95% us about the highest accuracy anyone has ever argued for, and that other estimates go as low as 61%. Given these figures, it's hard not to think that this game is a scam.

To me, the scandal of this show isn't the revelations or confessions. It's hardly scandalous to learn that people have affairs, behave dishonestly, harbor bad feelings for friends or relatives, etc.
What I find scandalous about this show is its implied presumption that the polygraph is infallible. This simply isn't the case. A well intentioned contestant may end up both telling the truth, and losing the game. Every time they answer a question, they ought to ask themselves not just if they want to reveal the truth, but if they want to gamble that the polygraph accurately guessed at whether or not their answer was the truth. That's no small gamble. If the polygraph is 90% effective (a perhaps generous number that I've just made up -- I do not know the correct number), then even if the contestant tells what they believe to be the truth, they should expect to lose the game so long as there are about 10 questions.
The producers of the show ought to revamp it's description. The first line of the description they have on their own web page reads, "THE MOMENT OF TRUTH will put participants to the test -- the lie detector test -- to reveal whether or not they are telling the truth for a chance to win half a million dollars". The description states explicitly that the polygraph will "reveal the truth". It should instead read something along the lines of, the polygraph will "attempt to reveal the truth". Later in the shows self-description is the lin, "To win $500,000 participants have to tell the truth. " This simply isn't so. Instead, it ought to read something like "To win $500,000 participants have to tell whatever it is the polygraph concluded was the truth."
I don't mind the more noticed moral questions posed by the show's existence. Whether or not watching people confess sins is moral is irrelevant. It's clearly going to attract an audience. And it's hardly news that attracting an audience is the name of the game in television. To me, the show's real moral problem is that it could well be ripping off its contestants.

This woman is out of her mind. She expected to recieve a phone call from someone offering her more money and fame to do something while ruining her life, what an idiot. What people won't do for money and what she thought would be stardom. If was hard to watch, she will never rebound from this. If I were her husband I would throw her out. Loser....
