Politics: Where Truth Comes to Die

I regret to say that I think the electorate, and not the candidates and elected officials, are most to blame for the wide-spread acceptance of the fact that it’s pretty much OK for people in public life to lie to us.

Hewitt:

In an on-line debate with a Bush defender, I chased down his fact dodging until I finally had him pinned. Pushed he responded, "Whether Bush lied is irrelevant. He was defending the greater truth." The greater truth was the Bush political ideology. For that defender and the Bush defenders here, theory determines fact, thus the ideologically pure cannot lie.

This view is dangerous. Aside from morality of lying, following a liar gets you into trouble. Not only did we get into Iraq based on Bush administration lies and faulty intelligence (they are not mutually exclusive factors), but also we conducted the war incompetently due to people who lie to themselves. The Bush administration actually thought Iraqis would waive little American flags at the American liberators and so ordered tens of thousands of the flags. The Bush Administration went in with too few people and expected the Iraqis to pay for war with their oil revenues.

Leaders who lie screw up when reality does not conform to theory. It is dangerous to elect them.

Nevertheless, the public at large and particularly the die hard Bush defenders demand that their leaders lie to them, or, to use their language, "speak only the greater truth." Any problems with reality can simply be denied. It is this preference for delusion that is destroying America.

Angela:

Yes, I agree that the majority of citizens of the US lie regularly. Also, I consider it human depravity and this is something that has been an issue with this country over the past 50 or so years. Also, it seems in the political arena, everyone lies; including Obama. Unfortunately, if we gain everything we believe we need and want; what happens to our moral compass which is our conscience: it becomes seared. I worry about the children and those who will come after us as if this is what they see and hear daily, they will follow suit. What good is it for a man to profit the whole world and then lose his own soul.

Garyd:

Nonsense Anonymous there is no evidence that he manipulated anything. There is evidence that the intelligence we had was wrong in some ways but there is none that he manipulated anything.

Bush didn't believe anything that John Kerry, Bill Clinton and various intelligence agencies around the world didn't believe before Bush ever became president.

Anonymous:

Bush lied about Iraq by manipulating the intelligence. Woe onto the loyal 27% after this liar and his master Cheney are gone.

Garyd:

Given the willingness of the disloyal opposition to characterize almost any statement that a candidate makes that later proves to be in error as a lie it is increasingly difficult for an electorate that increasing begins to wish that they'd all just shut up and leave them alone to determine exactly what is and is not a lie.

The Bush lied and people died crowd are a case in point here. Sorry Bush didn't lie we believed that Saddam at the very least was attempting to acquire weapons of mass destruction whether he had them or not. That was in breach of the cease fire agreement in and of itself.

Some poetry to peruse:

"Born on the Nile River in Sudan, KOLA BOOF is an exciting new voice in literature. Her remarkably beautiful (but controversial) poetry collection, "NILE RIVER WOMAN" is now available at Amazon.Com. Some of the classic poems from that collection are printed right on this page!! Also see her tribute to her slain friend, Theo Van Gogh:

Published in Africa/1997:

"BINT IL NIL"

I want a new religion.
The one our mothers had in the river.

I am tired of Jesus and Mohammed.
I am tired of man's foot.
I am tired of the White man's mother.
I am weary...from doing nothing about it.

I want my own religion.
I want my real mother.

Africa, I want you.

Make me pregnant with God.
Our own perfect babies...Black as perfection.
Tall as the sky. Healthy as light sparkling on
clear water.

I want my own religion.
I want my own voice.
I want my own face.
I want my own hair.
I am Naima/the one who is victorious
the one

who is praying

Although there is signicant doubt that Jesus' actually said,

"If any of you put a stumbling block before one of these little ones who believe in me, it would be better for you if a great millstone were hung around your neck and you were thrown into the sea", Mark 9:42,

wiki.faithfutures.org/index.php/198_Millstone_for_Temptation,

it is, however, a great passage for judging leadership qualities.

Clinton's millstones:

major # 1, Her dishonest, lying, cheating husband who she should have dumped years ago. Having him in the Whitehouse again would percolate the stench of adultery and womanizing on a 24/7 basis for four more years.

major #2, Her disrespect for unborn children.

major #3, Not recognizing the flaws and errors of contemporary religions.

minor #1, "forgetting" the details of her trip to Bosnia.

Obama's millstones:

major #1, The "Reverend" Jeremiah Wright.

major #2, His failure to immediately condemn Wright's recent speech.

major #3, His disrespect for unborn children.

major #4, Not recognizing the flaws and errors of contemporary religions.
