“On Faith” panelist Sam Harris is the author of the best-selling books Letter to a Christian Nation (2006) and The End of Faith (2005), which won the 2005 PEN Award for Nonfiction and has been translated into many foreign languages. Harris is a graduate in philosophy from Stanford University, has studied both Eastern and Western religious traditions, and is now completing a doctorate in neuroscience. He makes regular appearances on television and radio to discuss the danger that religion now poses to modern societies. with all due respect, I think you fail to properly understand the positive effect Christianity has had on the ascendancy of western civilization. Thus far the track record of atheist regimes has been terrrible(Mao,POl POt,Stalin, Khmer Rouge,North Korea, Cuba,Eastern Bloc,ect). I suppose someday we may eventually have an atheist/secular humanist regime in power long enough to use as a basis for comparative study. But as for now, based on the evidence we have, the betting man's/woman's best bet is to saty with the Christianity we know rather than the atheism of genocdie and the killiong fields.
