The group has sold over 25 million albums and in 2001 became the first rock band invited to perform at the U.N. General Assembly. Ahmad also was appointed U.N. Goodwill Ambassador for HIV/AIDS. He personalized the "I Care, Do You?" U.N. poster campaign in Pakistan by taking the well-known verse of the Koran about reverence for human life and paraphrasing it to say: "Saving one life (from AIDS) is like saving the whole of humanity." Born in Pakistan , Ahmad grew up in New York . He obtained his medical degree from Pakistan 's King Edward Medical college in Lahore . He helped form Pakistan 's first pop band, Vital Signs , whose debut album sold a million copies. Ahmad decided to give up his stethoscope and pick up his guitar, and after leaving Vital Signs in 1990 he founded Junoon. Recently Ahmad appeared in two documentary films: It's My Country Too , about Muslim-Americans, and Rockstar and the Mullahs . Both were broadcast worldwide on PBS and the BBC. A passionate activist in promoting peace between India and Pakistan , Ahmad made a song/video Ghoom Tana . It is on his latest solo album INFINITI. Close.

Bullhe Shah was one of the great sufi poets of Punjab, if not the greatest. I respect and enjoy his poetry immensely. However the part of poetry referred to in these comments were from another great sufi poet of Punjab, Mian Muhammad. This is from his epic book "Saif ul Muluk." This part has been recited by a very famous singer Shaukat Ali from Pakistan

As iF:

Salaam (Peace) all,

All I want to say is that just observing in silence makes you understand everything and everyone in a way which cannot be described.

There is no love without understanding. And there is no understanding without silent observation. At least for there is none.

May we understand everything visible to us and all that is beyond our visibility.

Love & Peace.

gayle hunter:

with god's help, I got my spirit back. Takes a clear conscience. The formula= post traumatic stress disorder =bad behavior and mental illness=broken heart(spirit)= curse of mankind=after the apple, Adam and Eve had it. Then gave the curse to cain and able.=we are all innocent of all charges. Takes another to break your heart. Bible Mat. 22= 10 commandments=Love God, your neighbor, and yourself. A trauma victim has heart damage and can not truly love. Has low self-esteem, depressed, and discouraged. Thinks life isn't fair. So lie, cheats, and steals. Right after the apple bit they started blaming everybody else. There is no one to blame now. This mess is over! Love and Peace, Gayle

Dear All

It is very true that God is every where but thing is that we have to find in ourselve(heart).Which Baba bulley shah want to teach us and still his poetry teaching us

morgan hawley:

That poet sounded as if he were looking for Jesus because Jesus is the only God I know that will live in your heart,he came to me,and made me to know what love really is. I've been through the religious experience and legalistic letter of the law kind of people and it nearly drove me over the loop. You know when god is in your heart everything is knew, Jesus said that pharisees followed letter of the law which killed but they forgot spirit if the law which brings life, if these laws do not bring life then there not being applied to the purpose for which God and man have made them. God bless you Jesus loves you.

abd, you are right : the Holy Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) teaches us that God is NOT in our hearts, but is above the seventh heaven, on His throne.

but Islam does teach us to keep Allah (God) in our hearts, in the sense that our thoughts, hopes, fears, should be constant in remembering Him. so in that sense, (the rememberance of) God should always be in our hearts.

"Those who believe, and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allâh, Verily, in the remembrance of Allâh do hearts find rest."
QURAN Chapter13:Verse28

for any of those who have further questions about Islam, i ask you to please go to authentic sources for your knowledge. visit a local mosque, everyone is welcome to come, and speak with the imam there. or pick up a copy of the Quran (The Noble Quran is one of the best english translations). or go to a trustworthey website. Here are a few:
whyislam.com
islam-qa.com
(veronica, try these!)

Salman, one sincere advice for you: Stick to what you know, which seems limited to music. Leave Islam for those who know Islam. Your musings on Islam are quite amusing and mostly quite preposterous.
What have you done for Islam in your entire life? Do you think a few songs full of polytheism; purportedly "Islamic" in nature makes you someone who is authorized to speak on behalf of Islam? Do you even pray 5 times or do you pray 'in your heart'? Remember that the religion was established by the Prophet (S), not by Bully Shah.
You are an embarrassment to our religion and our country. Take the example of someone who was better and brighter than you in your own field of music-- Junaid Jamshed, and consider how he saw the light and took himself closer to His Lord. While you on the other hand, continue to practice your regular, Western-immersed life, and claim to speak on behalf of our great religion. Account for your deeds, before your deeds are accounted for you. Life is not just fun and amusement. Spend 1/10 of the time you spend in music to learn about the authentic Islam, and perhaps you will see what Junaid saw. May Allah guide you.

Beautiful!

The place God lives would have no beginning, and no end! Would be totally different from the physical world. Such a place has thrived in the heart of humanity throughout all the changing eras!

Deep within personal thought exists another world. A place of peace and love!! Guidance toward this place allowed God to exist here, there and everywhere!

We can't dismiss the idea we are more than machines. There is a subjective message from poetry, music and literature;--most especially religious and spiritual works. This is what matters! What has guided our way!

ZAINEB NONO NO HARAM DOES NOT MEAN THAT AT ALL
IT MEANS SOMETHING THAT IS FORBIDDEN BY ALLAH- SOMETHING THAT IS HATED OR DISLIKED BY ALLAH

IT IS NOT A SWEARWORD OR INSULT
SOMETHING IS HALAL APPROVED BY ALLAH (ALLOWED OR LIKED BY ALLAH)
MUKRUH NEITHER LIKED NOR DISLIKED BY ALLAH
OR HARAM HATED OR DISLIKED BY ALLAH, FORBIDDEN

i never see any panelist respond to any posts even direct questions
i think they just have their say and leave

victoria:

NO NO NO ZAINEB, haram doesn't have that meaning at all. Haram means something that is strictly forbidden by ALLAH- something hated or disliked.
It is not at al the word you thought it was. In that context perhaps you could revise your opinion of the Maulvi person-(i dont know who he is) perhaps he was speaking with an explosive fervor i dont know- that would be inappropriate inthe extreme coming from a religious speaker.
yusuf ali has spoke to some degree about what is isalmically allowed as far as music is concerned but i still think he has a somewhat rigid interpertation-theres a video somewhere of him speaking-the life of the Prophet(swa)-

as far as i can figure the nature of music is so intoxicating and seductive that i believe people fear that it will distract muslims from remeberance of ALLAH, or even become a thing to be worshipped- therefore setting itself up besides ALLAH as a god(shirk) which is...haram.

i really wish that i could find someone in islam that could give me an opnion about the nature of art in islam- i mean animated or representative art- from my limited knowledge i think that it was "forbidden"? because there was the fear that there could be idol worship resulting from it- this is my idea not doctrne or anything.
maybe BROTHER AHMAD knows someone or he himself has knowledge of this subject in 7 years ive never found anyone who cares about this subject.
I WOULD BE THRILLED BEYOND BELIEF IF I COULD FIND AN ANSWER FOR THIS PEACE

Zaineb Ainuddin:

Dear Mr. Ahmad:

I think I saw a documentary of you in Pakistan interviewing the infamous "bijili-wala" Maulvi.

You had asked him some questions with respect to Music and Islam, and he basically responded with the most ridiculous hate-filled answer I have ever heard. In fact I believe he responded by saying "haram" (bastards) to those who sing and dance. I didnt understand why a spiritual person would talk like that. I was at the time studying music in college so this really effected me: my stomach got sick when I heard those words.

Anyway me and my sister use to listen to your music growing up in Karachi back when you were part of Vital Signs! I really love your work (writings and efforts to promote peace). My Father was born in UP India and was forced to move to Pakistan during the partitian in '47. His greatest wish would be for Pakistan and India to reunite.

Thank you.

victoria:

i would say that we humans dont necesarily have a monopoly on worshipping God-

every morning i hear the birds and they remind me its time to pray-

trees as prayer forms

stretch out thy woody arms to God
they are always upraised in praise
ascending from the earthy sod
reverence, devotion, all their days

thats what they look like to me i know its smarmy...

Flowing through as breath through ney:
Spirit's whispers rise and sound in me.

Another reed from distant different well,
Sighing longing's ode in complementing key.

A whirlwind of the master breathing,
Two rhapsodic skins whirl around an empty hole.

AH! The master speaking us together knows,
and draws one through the other into ecstatic union.

Akela:

Lord,
I was looking for you all over, in all directions.
When I bowed my head, Saw you hiding in my heart.
Unknown to me, I went here and there & all over.
After finding you with in, I am now trouble free.

Be peaceful and spread Peace
Akela.

My Questions And Answer By Jaskeerat Kaur
Tuesday, March 09, 2004 - 04:32 PM PST

Existence has many questions attached to it. For example, people wondering how we got here, if there is anybody else in the universe besides us. I have always believed in God. What ever was created was created by God. I have had many questions though, like who was the first person on earth? How did it all start?

Of course, science has proven that people cannot have started with Adam and Eve (Sandman and Rib woman). Some scientists believe that life evolved in water. Guru Nanak wrote the same thing many years before any scientist could figure it out. I have never really understood how we could evolve in water or from
apes or whatever. But then I realized that if the maggots of a fruit fly can form from the soil and food recycled compost, then why can't life have evolved in water?
Okay, so I figured out that the chain of humans formed from humans formed from humans. Water forms from ice. The planet forms from all the gases that turn into rock. And the universe formed from an explosion - The Big Bang. Then I start to question if God is really there. Our plane of existence clashes with science, where does God come in?

My dad explained energy. Well, that is what God is, energy. Energy is the thing that caused the explosion (Big- Bang Theory), that created the universe, that contained gases that formed the planets, which contained the ice, that melted and formed water, that created species, that evolved into humans! It was all energy.

If we just say God creates everything, then we also have to ask who created God. There is no way to explain if this energy we call God has been here forever. There is no way to explain the universe or planets or space. There is
no way to explain if there was nothing at all at one time. There is a way to explain what God really is. God is not a person, it does not have a name nor does it have gender. God can't touch, God can't write. That is why all those movies where they make an actor play God are silly, because God is energy. The rest is our responsibility, otherwise we wouldn't be here. God is energy and we are lucky to have it.

A Hermit:

"But never break anyone's heart
Because that is where God lives."

Wisdom this Humanist can happily embrace, Thank you Salman (and thank you for the music, too...)

David Magaro:

"And being asked by the Pharisees, when the kingdom of God cometh, He answered them and said, 'The kingdom of God cometh not with observation: neither shall they say, Lo, here! or, There! for lo, the kingdom of God is within you'" (Luke 17:20-21).

"[F]or the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit" (Romans 14:17).

from The Bible, American Standard Version

jim:

1 Samuel 16:7 But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.

Ms. Breezy:

"But never break anyone's heart
Because that is where God lives."

That is beautiful...As a Christian, we are taught that we are not alone, that God is within us. Simply beautiful. My heart aches for people who don't have faith in anything.

Happy Holidays Everyone!

vedapushpa:

Yes - Bulleh shah - the Sufi's cherishing::

"...But Dont Break Anyone's Heart
Because That is Where God Lives"
is undoubtedly the best religious tenet. It is same as the Christian "Love" the Hindu "Aatmiyata" and would be there as such in all Religions.
This cherished value means a 'mutuality sans demands and commands' - as 'any two entities' interacting with one another only when mutually willing but still remaining 'regardful of each other'.
BUT THAT DEMANDS A DISCIPLINING OF ONE'S LOWER EGO - THE SELFISHNESS !

Easier said than done !
But Bliss to those who will !!
