Redskins Great Darrell Green Talks About His Faith

Darrell Green collected a lot of accolades during his 20-year career with the Washington Redskins. The cornerback, who was Washington’s top pick in the 1983 draft, went on to win two Super Bowls and to be voted to seven Pro Bowls. He also won four NFL “fastest man” competitions. In his first year of Pro Football Hall of Fame eligibility, Green is one of 26 semifinalists, and some think a potential first-ballot inductee.

Yet, Green wants you to think of him as more than a guy who could run fast and intercept passes. In our conversation about his faith, he talks about how God told him to remain in Washington, how Marty Schottenheimer tested him and how Joe Gibbs facilitated but didn’t lead Christian fellowship at the Redskins.

Tell me about your faith.

I became a Christian in college through a colleague. He was a gentleman who worked in the athletic department. He presented the gospel of Jesus Christ to me, and I responded to that and began to try to live a life in line with God’s word and being led by a spirit. The Bible does say that the sons of God are those who are led by His spirit. . . . I’ve never considered myself a Christian athlete. I know I was a part of FCA [Fellowship of Christian Athletes] years ago. I consider myself a Christian above everything else. . . .

I have tried to utilize that influence [that comes with being a professional athlete] as a means to an end, but also because of what we [as athletes] have and been afforded, agree or not agree, we’ve also been afforded to meet a greater means, a greater end for other people. I think that’s been the real part of my life. Most people might not know this, but God told me to stay here in Washington when I was a younger man and had the opportunity to go to other places. If you do your homework, you’ll find that there was one incident where I was engaged in a conversation about going to another team and you’ll see that for all the many, many years that never existed again. God told me not to leave, and in that, God in turn, number one, kept me from breaking my neck, kept me physically able to perform at a level, kept me in the favor of the management because they can get rid of you. I have lived the sovereignty of God. I’ve seen him sovereignly take this 5-[foot]-8 and three-quarters [inch] guy and keep him healthy. I could run fast when I was 40 years old. I had His spirit in me. I’ve been faithful to my wife now almost 23 years. We’ve tried to utilize what God has given us and give it back to Him for His glory. When I say give it back to Him, it’s what He said: When you’ve done to the least of him, you’ve done it to Him.

In college, when you really embraced a Christian lifestyle, was there something going on in your life that made you receptive to that?
When I went to college, Doug Taft — he’s a friend today — he was a trainer. I was, you hear people say I was raised in the church. I went to church as a child. I had about as much of God and character in me as any other kid on the street, which is none. But when they invited me to the bible study, it was because I used to always say, when I was on the track team, I would always run the track meet and when I won I would say, ‘I just thank God.’ I guess Doug knew this guy can’t spell God. He took enough initiative to say, ‘Hey, why don’t you come to Bible study?’ And when I went to Bible study, sure enough, I didn’t know God, but . . . when I heard the truth, that I was a sinner, that I wasn’t right with God, I said, ‘Well, what do I do?’ I finally said I can ask God forgiveness. I can confess that I’m not right. And I got down on my knees in my dorm room one night, just said, ‘God, I didn’t know.’

My sister called me Mr. Goody Two-Shoes. I didn’t drink. I didn’t smoke. I was a nice kid. I was smiley, but all that said, I was falling short of the glory of God. I began to get these revelations. I began to really have Godly sorrow. The Bible says Godly sorrow leads to repentance. . . . I really was sorry that I had it all wrong. I wanted to commit my life to follow God, follow the Lord’s word. So I was in my dorm one night and I just came to that conclusion and from that point on I’ve tried to live that way.

But it wasn’t until I got to Washington that my closest friend in the world who’s actually one of the chaplains for the Redskins, Brett Fuller, in meeting him, I went to a whole other level. I was very fortunate in that God always uses people. He said He’d use rocks if He had to but so far He hasn’t. It was that relationship which led obviously to my church, my local church. It was those relationships that God used me to precipitate a life and then me being able to have a relationship with God and having his spirit, being able to try and seek his wisdom. In other words, do I go to another team? Do I take this job? Do I marry this woman? Do I move here? I’m led by His spirit. It’s led me by the grace of God in the right way. I’m glad I never got lost.

There was more money out there. Free agency was for that purpose, to create the opportunity to [make more money]. That was real, and I was good enough to have opportunities come every year, but I felt like God told me not to do that. As I sit here now, after having played 20 years here, a great career, certainly loved by this community and more importantly loved the community, . . . it just proves in my soul that I heard God speak to me. And he didn’t say: ‘Stay here. I’ll give you three more years, 15 more years.’ He said: ‘Stay here.’ As Abraham went to sacrifice his son, I was willing and I did sacrifice what I perceived as bigger money, but in retrospect as Abraham said me and the boy will be right back, and he and the boy came back, and so I’m here.

How big of a role does your faith play in your daily life?

Anyone would want to be able to say hands down 100 percent. I hope that. I hope I’m being led every second, every moment of my life. That I’m led by God’s spirit, whether it’s in business decisions or relationally with my children, my wife, and my thoughts when I’m driving down the street. God’s word, his spirit is very, very important and prevalent in my life on a minute-by-minute basis. . . . I trust that by His grace I’m being led right by His spirit all the time every day every moment. . . . The Bible makes it very clear that He’s not a means to an end, but He’s our all and all. I try to follow the Lord in every aspect. You’ve heard the old saying, ‘Don’t make me lose my religion.’ Remember when we were kids when the Flintstones would put that cat outside? I don’t ever want to be away from God. I don’t ever want to be outside of his leadership and influence in my life. I can’t think of any area in my life where I go, ‘Okay God, I got this.’

Are you ever scared there might be a point in your life where you wouldn’t have God with you?

No, I don’t fear that. He wouldn’t abandon me. I don’t fear it. I want to remain forever conscious of me continuing to seek His face. He’s the same yesterday, today and forever. If I had the fear, which I don’t, I’d be concerned about me failing to respond properly to him. That is a part of our every day walk. It’s our responsibility to respond with a hearty yes and amen every day of our lives. Yes Lord let it be done and call us with your will.

What’s been the biggest test to your faith?

I don’t know. That’s an interesting question. I can’t answer that. What have I gone through in life?

Has there been a time when your faith has been tested?

There are many things that we go through in life. I do remember as a young man, just thinking about leaving here for more money. I clearly heard God, okay. I could not question that. I heard God tell me don’t go. In the meantime, I was in debt to the tune of six figures.

So there was a real temptation to ignore God.

I wouldn’t call it a temptation. It was a decision, and I don’t know that it’s a temptation. Maybe the word applies.

I don’t want to put words in your mouth.

You know how as people we always when God says do something and you try to figure out [whether to do it]. The only example I could say of this is when Abraham was told by God to sacrifice the very son that he promised him and he hoped for all of his life. The Bible never tells us that he called his boys and said, ‘Hey, ah, why don’t you all help talk me out of this?’ I can say in many of my situations fortunately I didn’t go to someone. . . . Not that I don’t seek the wisdom of man. I certainly do. If anything our faith is tempted everyday in terms of interacting with people. I was in a hostile environment in athletics where coaches are not always the kindest people. . . . Everybody is not going to have the same standards you have.

I guess to answer, I’m trying to struggle through to answer your question, in that everyday you’re tested. Your faith is put to the test. Your commitment and your faith is put to the test to how you’re going to respond on a day-to-day basis. Our faith is tested more when we are under authority. That’s our biggest issue, when the boss, the coach, when daddy, when mom, those are the biggest issues where we have to make a decision and those decisions can be supported by the spirit of God and his word.

I’m trying to get there because your question has got my brain reeling. We had a coach here, you may remember, Marty Schottenheimer. Schottenheimer did everything he could to disrespect me, and I don’t have a clue why. I was 40 years old at the time. I had been playing 18 years. And for some reason he went at me. And there was a moment, more than one moment, but in two particular moments, in front of my peers, these young players, I say peers . . .

But they were half your age.

In front of them, on the field, twice. ‘No, wait a minute, Darrell.’ In that moment Schottenheimer couldn’t have touched me. In reality, he couldn’t have said, ‘You’re fired.’ But in that moment, I had to make a decision as it relates to honoring God and as it relates to serving these young men. So everyday of our lives, as I get to the point, maybe the straight answer is yes, in moments like that when you can say whatever you’d like to say or respond how you’d like to, really to a consequence not all that bad, but you make a decision that the spirit of God is in you to be more accountable to God and the body, the broader body, and to the younger people. Like the Bible says, strong carry the weak.

Now that you got me thinking, there were many occasions in my life where they say your character is who you are when no one’s looking. It’s not so much who you are when no one’s looking, but who you are when no one of influence or significance is looking. Then it’s how do you respond. I’ve said all the time you never want to lose your testimony. You never want to be disqualified. It’s what I tell my kids: What about that moment when that person really needs someone? You come and you really got the answers but he just can’t hear because of your behavior. . . .

As one who tries to be filled with God’s spirit and led by His spirit everyday, as my juices are flowing now, everyday you’re tested. It’s not your faith to believe. It’s your faith to honor the Lord with your thought, denying yourself through humility and through service. So I think that’s in line with answering your question. Where a situation happens like that where there are people who are maliciously and in an unfounded way coming at you in front of a group or even in the games when guys do something or say something, I’ve got to always, as we said earlier in this conversation, I’m always by the grace of God cognizant of who He is and who I am in Him. The first thing my kids hear anytime they walk out the door is represent; represent God, represent the church; represent the Green family; represent yourself. My kids will all tell you that. They’ve all heard that all their lives. I always want to be filled with God’s spirit. That doesn’t mean I’m always perfect at it.

When people challenge your faith, how do you react to that?

First of all, it would depend on who’s asking. If I’m taking to a Christian brother or sister or young Christian brother or sister, someone who sincere, present it for exactly the way it is. If it’s someone who [has no belief] then there’s no value, there’s no benefit to them should I say. They’re trying to get me to respond. So for that young person who potentially is not right with God, but he or she is right there, I wouldn’t go right to that answer. I would go to the bigger issue. . . .

I respond to people. I try to respond to people according to where they are, how they are coming to me. Pretty much almost every day I can walk into a mall or a store or a restaurant, [and hear] ‘Darrell!’ People are coming at me, like that’s my old buddy.

They feel like they know you.

Absolutely. It’s my responsibility to respond to that, that Darrell, in the right way, even when it’s not an old buddy for 20 years because some people are real sincere in that. But then again, there are other people that Darrel is not ‘Darrell!’ Especially since I’m only 5-8 ¾. You’ve got people dealing with that, people who wanted to be an athlete, or people who are bigger than you.

What role does God play in sports?

I think God has a role in every aspect of everything. I do believe that there is a free will that we have, obviously, to respond to God. He doesn’t make us do anything, but I think that God is sovereign in every aspect. So if I don’t train, and I eat all the fatty foods, then I’m going to be destroying my body. God loves me, but . . .

We have a responsibility as well.

We have a responsibility to respond in truths, but God is ultimately sovereign. I would say up front we don’t know everything. We are, as the scripture says, we are the clay; God is the potter. Who is man that would talk back to God? I don’t know every answer to every question, but I do trust that every aspect of my life and my football career God was certainly involved in it. I guarantee when those big guys were trying kill me, God didn’t let them kill me.

You played for Joe Gibbs.

I played 11 years for him.

He’s also well know for having a strong faith. How prevalent was religion in the locker
room, not just at the Redskins, but also in college, high school?

Well, in college we had FCA and personally I knew Jesus for myself and prayed and did fellowship with guys. I think the thing that I give Joe Gibbs credit for, I didn’t necessarily always agree with his philosophy, but I certainly respected and appreciated it because it was a great value to us. You’d have to ask him for himself, but I believe that his philosophy was — and I have to agree with it now because it did work — his philosophy was, ‘Look, I love Jesus Christ. I’m going to follow him. There are moments when I’m going to speak and present in a broad sense, but within this team and this organization and in my responsibilities as a leader here, I’m only going to when there are those that take it upon themselves.’ In other words, ‘Joe, can we on Monday at 2 o’clock have this time and this room to do a Bible study?’ ‘Yes, Darrell you can.’ With his authority, he [could] go, ‘No, no, you can’t do that.’ He could have shut the door. He wouldn’t say, ‘Look, I’m doing a Bible study for the team at 2 o’clock on Monday.’ No, he wouldn’t say that.

Instead he allowed you to make the arrangements.

Exactly, when he could have shut us down. When I was younger, I didn’t agree with him.

You wanted him to be more active.

Yeah, but in retrospect I have to say I do because he had a responsibility. . . . and so I think in retrospect I do agree with how he did it. But we knew. He presented himself enough to know his character.

You knew how he felt.

I’m not going to lead it for everybody. You know I’m with you, and when you guys ask for this or that, I’m going to make sure I give it. The Redskins were not the First Church of the Washington Redskins. His job was to coach. I totally agree with how he did it, as I look back on it. We probably did it better than anyone else, without offending people, making it available.

But you wish he would have been more active.

Yeah, because I just knew his influence. But in reality, we did [it]. So this is a great discovery. But with him, we knew what he was. He was effective. But within the house over there, the clubhouse, he just made sure we had access to what we needed, access in terms of facilities and times and so forth.

Did you ever have teammates question your faith in front of you, to your face?

Oh gosh, yeah. We were called all kind of names.

Did that ever get to you?

It really didn’t. I think that to me those are the ones who really wanted [religion].

You thought because they mocked you, they were jealous of your faith?

I don’t know, but I think that yes, many times, many times. I think even within the front office at times, yeah, at the management level. I think, and I may be wrong, I think that Bobby Beathard [was one]. It was said that some of the management were concerned about the Christian aspect of our lives. It’s always been a big question. Are Christians [soft]? [The late Green Bay Packers defensive end] Reggie White would knock your head off. But you always heard that. . . . I would imagine there was probably many things said, but the truth of the matter is we played just as successfully as Christian men as anybody else.

Is sports’ winner-take-all mentality counter to some of the teachings of your faith?

I don’t know the Bible all the way, but I don’t know anything that you can quote me that would be a contradiction to me. Playing hard, to me, tackling hard, the Bible says this: Run every race to win. It says: Run every race according to the rules. It says: Do whatever you do with all of your heart as unto God. So if I’m trying my best to cover this guy, trying my best to tackle this guy, I’m doing it according to the rules, then I don’t know where there’s a contradiction. Also, realistically, I think that there’s only one person or two who can ever determine that, and that would be the individual or God because the intent of the heart. . . . I can tell you right now I don’t know any Christian whose intent, if his intent is winner-take-all. You used the words winner-take-all. I don’t know about winner-take-all, but I mean the intent is to win. The goal is to try and win. I don’t know where that could be a contradiction. I don’t know any action that I’ve taken on a field that would have been a contradiction by my intent or my action. When I was trying to stop Michael Irvin, I just don’t know that. I’m trying to throw the ball. I’m trying to make a tackle. I don’t think I could ever say that.

As you look back now on your career is there one play or moment on the field that haunts you because it wasn’t Christian?

I don’t have anything that haunts me, but I guarantee you I’ve done some things in my thoughts more than my actions. You could find referees that I’ve apologized to just for screaming at them, not saying a curse word . . .

But getting so wrapped up in the moment.

Exactly. I’ve gone back to [the referee] and said, ‘Man.’ But no, I don’t have anything haunting me.

Did you ever pray to win?

No, I never prayed to win. I prayed for protection so I wouldn’t get my head knocked off. That was pretty much about it.

In light of what happened to Sean Taylor, how does your faith help you cope with or understand such a tragedy?

There’s a number of ways to look at this. Let me ask you a question.

I’ve asked you plenty of questions. You’re entitled to ask me one.

Your grandma is 98 years old. They call you and say she died in her sleep. Tragedy or death? It’s death, right?

Still, if it’s my grandmother, it’s a tragedy. If someone I love and care about very much is gone . . .

[laughter] That’s good, actually. That’s coming from the heart. But if you’re not answering that in relation to your grandma and we step outside of that and you begin to look at this thing from the perspective that the life is the life, whether it’s gunned down or [dies naturally]. The answer to your question is the big question. The thing that I say about my grandma dying, I’ve spoken at my grandma’s funeral, my dad’s funeral and my mom’s funeral. I remember back in the ’80s when my grandma died, I said to the family the inevitable has happened, and I quickly transitioned from grandma to those that are still alive. . . .

So the tragedy is if he’s not prepared, from a Christian perspective, if he’s not prepared to die. You’ve got to have faith to die. There’s a process. So [what is] the real tragedy? Is it if grandma dies at 95 and is not prepared or the little kid who dies at 6 and is prepared? Which one is the real tragedy? That’s the key to me as a Christian because we’re automatically just passing through here. Are we planning to be here forever? No history shows you, the Word shows you, you’re not going to be here [forever]. There will come this day. Death always, in particular with a 24-year-old and his peers, it causes everybody to reflect upon themselves. At funerals you think about first the person, then it goes right to you. You begin to put yourself in that casket, every one of the young people, and the old ones really, particularly speaking about this. All those peers and their wives, they’re seeing themselves. Which is why, what we do as Christians at funerals is we preach the message of salvation. After we honor the person, we preach get yourself ready.

Do you believe in an afterlife and if so, how do you picture it?

I believe everything the Bible says, that we live, we die, we’re judged and then we are raised again, and we then live according to how that judgment has been. We’re judged with grace and mercy or we are judged with judgment. And so we live forever with the Lord. That’s what I believe. That’s what I picture. That’s what I expect, absolutely, eternal life. You believe that?

I don’t know.

It’s interesting for someone to write an article at such level and to have questions at such level but yet not be sure themselves. . . . You read the Bible and the very power in God’s word itself will reveal truth to you and change you by itself, not some person and their great gift. The Bible itself don’t need anybody else, anything else. . . . The spirit of God is the only thing that I’ve seen that can awaken a man to come to a reality that guess what? There’s a God, and you ain’t him. I know that I know that I know. That’s a perfect example of how it happens. Then we look at them when they’re 24 which we didn’t see them when they were 9 and all that they were saying to them. The next thing you know, he’s in trouble or he’s shot and then we go, ‘Man, that guy.’ We didn’t even know the whole, we don’t know the half of it. You don’t even know. ‘Man, why does Mike Tyson act like that?’ You don’t even know. . . .

I’m from seven kids. Parents got divorced. My dad was an alcoholic. Very loving dad and mom. My dad was living on the other side of town. We saw him every day. But from what I was and what I experienced into how God changed my heart, trust me. Ain’t no money, fame or nothing can ever do that. Change me into what I am.

You know what a tragedy it would be if I lived and played NFL football in America for 20 years and that’s it. ‘Yeah, that’s Darrel Green. He played for 20 years.’ You telling me there’s nothing else? ‘Oh yeah man. He was the baddest guy.’ Okay, okay, that’s it? ‘Darrell Green was the fastest man.’ You can’t tell me . . .

Nothing happened after that?

No, not after that, but in that. You can’t tell me that he loved God. He loved his wife. He was a faithful husband. His children were raised properly. You telling me [that’s it?]

RYAN:

Man, people get so bent out of shape when a celebrity takes a stance on Christianity. Even if you're an unbeliever, or have a different faith, why does Christianity get so scutanized when it stands for all that is good? Real Christians make the world a better place for all. I'm not talking about groups of people throughout history that force Christian doctrine down people's throats. That is not what Jesus teaches. I'm talking about wise, faithful Christians who live by example as we're taught, and let God handle the hearts of men.

R.D. Milton:

I have been a Redskins fan for a long time but most importantly I'm a Christian. I thank you for living your life the way that you have on and off the field.
There are many who think there is no place for Christians in sports but they are so sadly mistaken. Wheather you believe or not the turth is that God gave His Son Jesus to die for our sins,so that who ever believes in Him will have ever lasting life. People alwasys want to attack the Christian believer and allow those of other beliefs including the non-believer to do and say what they want. But the day will come when all must bow to Christ and give an account. Thank you for your strong Christian beliefs and willingness to share with the world Mr. Green. And I think your right we shouldn't pray for wins but for protection and a will to do our best. It is a very sad and pityful thing when a coach of a football team can't speak of his belief in God and our Savior Jesus especially after suffering the loss of one of his players without someone making a big deal out of it which was the case when Joe Gibbs talked about the death of Sean Taylor
The media has taken the things Joe Gibbs said about his beliefs and are trying to make a mockery out of the Christian faith. Just as an unbeleiver has the right to state his beliefs so does the believer. Shame on the media for their ungodly efforts to destort the turth of Christ by questioning if there is any place in sprots for what they call religion. Christ is not a religion He is the truth and the only way to salvation.Just wonder how many of them that are making the big deal over it are believers of Christ themselves. May God have mercy on them and this ungodly nation of ours.
Again thank you Darrell Green for sharing your God given talents with the world but most of all for sharing your love of Chirst with us.

Terry:

What:

Some of the most crippling and disabling injuries
in the entire sports world occur in football.

To avoid serious injury playing this game for many years is surely due to superb conditioning and really, really, really good luck wouldn't you say? The great Walter Payton comes to mind and he was also a religious man as I recall.

If praying makes a person feel invulnerable, so be it. Football players, athletes in general and soldiers in particular need all the help they can get.

You can contrast the ideas of Fate, Destiny and good luck with the intervention of God all day long - the faithful will swear it's God doing all the work - even when He decides in his infinite Wisdom to look the other way while horrible things happen. This idea of God in sports leads to all kinds of bigger ideas as you can see.

Mikey O:

I've always respected how Darrel Green's faith has helped shape him into a man of good character. What's unfortunate is when people of faith aren't able to see that there are many ways to see life and be "prepared" for death. I remember years ago seeing a documentary on an elderly atheist couple from Germany living in Ireland where the husband was dying of cancer. They allowed camera access throughout the several week long process of his passing to try to demystify death and show that it's nothing to be afraid of. Throughout the film both the husband and wife looked comfortable with how the process was unfolding and seemed to be at peace with no regrets. The camera followed him almost literally to his last breath and showed the funeral and the spreading of his ashes afterwards.

The point of relating this story is to say that death is part of life and if faith helps you through that process just like it helps you live a better life that's great. However it doesn't take away from the fact that we really are just humans who have this life to spend and whatever happens next is unknowable, if there's anything to know at all. People come to find meaning to life in a variety of ways and ultimately being the best we can to ourselves and those around us will give us the most peace at the end.

What:

To Terry: He said he NEVER prayed to God for them to Win. He only prayed that he would be protected from injury. What is wrong with that? If you were a police officer would it be any different that you prayed that no one would shoot you or try to harm you in any way? NO matter the job it's a job and he got paid to do it and it was nothing wrong with him praying to HIS God and Savior to be protected. According to the Word of God that is what we as Christians are supposed to do. Everday when we wake up and before we go to bed and all throughout the day. We are to pray for the protection of God's angels and His HOly SPirit. Even minor things like a broken bone. If Jesus died so we as believers wouldn't have to be sick or have infirmities or have diseases we are supposed to pray for the peace and protection of the almighty God.

Philip:

Millie, you have no idea how much I respect a person who can use the word "inapposite" in blog-writing. Perhaps you are an attorney, although you did not use the word "arguably" in you comment. Anyway, I am truly in awe. And your comment is right on the money.

Can someone remove that awful comment from "Anonymous" about Bill and Hillary and communists, etc. Someone failed to take medication this morning.

Thank Daryl Green for his candor. Merry Christmas to one and all.

Terry:

Why would God prefer the Washington Redskins over say, the Greenbay Packers? What happens if Brett Favre prays more fervently than Darrell Green??

It's true there's alot of praying going on in organized sports these days, but notice that someone always wins and someone always loses anyway (surely both sides are praying). As far as I can tell, praying in the huddle is all about inspiring group cohesion rather than coercing God to divert opposing would-be tacklers, accelerate running speed, assure accuracy in throwing and kicking, etc. etc. etc.

I suppose an atheist player would simply have to rely on native talent and a little luck (but what about praying in the huddle?) - I have to agree with another poster - praying for victory is simply trying to coerce your God into declaring you the winner and your 'enemy' the loser. Now why would God take sides anyway? I'm sure He/She/It loves a good game too!! Why spoil it by skewing the outcome?? After all, if you're a Hindu, God is merely playing all the positions himself anyway, including Darrell and Brett.

People take themselves and their religion altogether too seriously don't you think? It seems to me folks ought to save praying for situations that really count for something - like living and dying.

A Fellow Christian:

Mr Green: You are a godly man and one who our ten year old son looks up to! Through your lifestyle and example, you show him that you can use your love for our Lord and Savior to influence those around you--even when playing football. Our son's dream is to be the fastest man in the NFL someday--just like his hero was at one time. We look forward to seeing you in Canton some day! Look for us; we are four of your biggest fans!

"Is that God??"

No, it's probably that a word you used turned up in an 'obscenity' filter and automation took over.

Frankly, it gets vitriolic enough here as it is without people using certain words. Maybe it'll force em to learn some others.

So I don't mind so much.

colin:

Green was a great player - but enough with the stupid faith blog.

tom:

how did you get so dumb?

tom:

Is that God??

Paganplace:

As for 'praying to win,' by the way, I'd see that as more problematic. Personally, I think it defeats the purpose of the whole exercise: when the Sox won the pennant, I wasn't praying for them to *win,* I was 'praying' to *break the 'Curse,' after a lot of heart and effort went into doing the work behind the doing of it.*

...and I'll admit I was a little gratified when the Rockies this year, who sold (and/or about whom others tried to sell) their Fundamentalist bent and victories as 'signs of the favor of God' ...got beaten by that old home of team of mine without any intention (or even observation: durn cable blackouts) from me.

Cause it's become standard to the point of cliche for sports victors to thank their God as if that showed them special favor as opposed to those who didn't win. Models conservative Christian economic ideas a little too much for my blood.

(Maybe it's even not what I was taught the Christian religion was supposed to be in the first place, but, heck, they took their time abolishing gladiatorial games after taking over the Roman Empire, contrary to billing.)

You can bet much culture-war credit would have been given to the fact of it if the Rockies had won, but hey. The real human effort involved aside, it's just a game.

Also real people and real bodies.

Paganplace:

" candide:

"To put yourself in a dangerous position (other than when serving your country) and then asking God to protect you is blasphemy by any definition."

I've put myself in dangerous situations to help others in non-nationalistic/military ways often enough that I think the Gods know what '(Appelation of one or more Gods,) I'm about to do something stupid,' means. :)

While I tend to rankle a bit about public prayers at sporting events turning into politicized, divisive, or exclusionary acts of public piety, and while I don't know how sports are supposed to connect to the Christian God, I think it's a natural impulse.

I do tend to see the athletic attributes that can prevent people from getting hurt as gifts from the Gods, and I see no conflict in praying that those who put their bodies at risk for our entertainment , even as mock-'adversaries' be in touch with such boons.

Once, athletic competitions were done to *honor* the Gods, ...a show of life and vitality and humanity's striving to excel. The theology of the masses may have changed, and maybe it's turned into a big-money enterprise, but in many ways the function is the same.

If people are pushing their bodies to the limit for our entertainment, I'll *darn well* pray for them not to be hurt in the process.

And I don't begrudge it of anyone else. I just wish it'd be less about polarizing the *fans* against others.

Candide: "To put yourself in a dangerous position (other than when serving your country) and then asking God to protect you is blasphemy by any definition."

Millie: "Blasphemy is cursing or reviling God. Its use is inapposite in this context."

Blasephemy in the broadest sense is an impious utterance. But what exactly is "impious?"

For a pagan, it would be denying the existence of the gods. Or cursing or reviling them.

According to the Third Commandment, it is "taking God's name in vain."

"In vain" indicates that, from a monothethistic view, blasphemy is a frivolous, self-serving, hypocritical or wicked reference to or invocation of "God."

That may or may not include "cursing or reviling God." That's a deep question, one which the Book of Job examines at length. What is providence? Good fortune, or the fact that we are here at all?

Blasphemy certainly includes praying for a victory in a football games, as Darrell Green points out. It also includes praying for victory in war, as Abraham Lincoln pointed out.

Whether it includes praying for one's safety in a football game is open to debate.

I don't see the difference between praying for one's safety in a football game or doing so in a combat zone.

Either both are blasphemous or neither is.

johng1:

Darrel Green is the last great one! I had the pleasure of meeting him in the mid 80's on a college campus. He asked me "where is building 34?" I stood there speechless and finally said, "it's over there!" I always wished I had shaken his hand and thanked him for being what he is.

jesuguru:

"Life is a lot easier if you don't spend time worrying about 'God' and 'Lucifer'."

My life indeed became much easier when I stopped "worrying" about God, and I rested in Him and His love. Sounds like it was the same for Mr. Green.

GO SKINS! And keep living/spreading the good Word, brother Darryl.

Millie:

"To put yourself in a dangerous position (other than when serving your country) and then asking God to protect you is blasphemy by any definition."

Blasphemy is cursing or reviling God. Its use is inapposite in this context.

It's absurd to criticize a man for supporting himself and his family in pro sports unless you also consider it somehow un-Christian to be a timber cutter, fisherman, pilot & navigators structured metal worker, traveling salesman, roofer, electrical power installer, farmer , construction worker, or truck driver. And those mining jobs are real safe, too. Since when is it counter to God's teachings to support your family by "putting yourself in a dangerous position"? Your theology is getting confused with your politics and your middle-class ignorance of available job opportunities over the last thousand years or so.

"Bob" Dobbs:

Life is a lot easier if you don't spend time worrying about "God" and "Lucifer."

candide:

To put yourself in a dangerous position (other than when serving your country) and then asking God to protect you is blasphemy by any definition.

Preachers who pray at NASCAR are also guilty of this sin.

Drumsalot:

Darrel Green is the MAN! IMO, What makes a man great is not the achievements he has made physically and financially but the achievements he makes in his walk through life with Jesus holding his hand.
I know who Darrel Green is only because of his achievements in Athletics, through the media and that he says he is christian. The fact is that there are many great men and women out there that are not professional athletes but plain and simply children of God who do the Lords work. Men like Darrel Green do have it tougher than most christians because they are in the spotlight. Wether or not DG agrees, It's my opinion that his faith is being tested on a regular basis because of his belief in God and his public stature and the test is not coming from God but from Lucifer himself.

Mr. Green
Congrats. On a solid Pro career, twenty years is setting the bar pretty high.
It’s amazing what one person who obeys God can accomplish, your career is a testament to that. Best of luck to you and your family.

PS. I have been a cowboys fan since before the Ice Bowl, The “Redskins” always came looking to knock somebody’s head off, and Darrell Green was one of the best at doing just that.
