God's Usefulness Recognized in Bad Times

Yes, I believe people turn to both guns and God in times of deep paralyzation. I am pretty sure if there was more study of his word instead of study of guns, the world would be in a better place. Hence put the word instead of toy guns in our childrens hands. Show children social justice, patience, love and faith instead of violent films and video games. Teach and show children they are responsible for their actions and the word will give them direction when no one else can. Be blessed and TEACH ONE TO SAVE ONE. This reminds me of one of my favorite scriptures: The Name of the Lord is a strong tower; the righteous run to it and are safe." Proverbs 18:10 There is always safety in God. The question becomes, what does 'safety' look like to you?

I agree that people tend to turn to guns or religion in bad times. People who turn to guns don't know God, or just don't believe that for whatever you're going through, and no matter how bad things get that there is great comfort in prayer and the Word of God. Most times when people go to jail, they want to pick up a Bible, when if they took the time to get to know God through reading His Word, prayer, and meditation, they could have taken the correct path. I agree with your statement about when things are going well, and people have enough money, that they act as though God is not needed, failing to realize that is was by God's grace and mercy that they have those blessings. God surely does not treat us as our sins deserve.

Yes, this fits my theory (certainly not original) that people call on God in the face of what they happen to be uncertain about.

People who wouldn't think of praying to God to let the water boil (because they are sure that it will boil when they turn on the heat), will pray when they're out of work and the rent comes due.

People with lots of money, won't pray for the rent, but might pray that their kid gets into the right ivy league school or that the surgeon they choose for their cosmetic surgery does a good job. It's all relative and it's all about uncertainty.

I truly believe that we rely on what we are taught so if it do not pan out we can say once again God did not hear me. I know because until I started reading the word I had a alibi for everything I would say well consider the source (mother). It was not until I begin to read the word that I realized I did not hear mom say according to thy will (she probably said it I was not listening) or to know that God never according to the word promised us no troubled times However, what the word saids is in layman terms we will know through God how to handle things that use to baffle us. and dispite all outer appearance all is well! Because I do have God and anything that God has a hand in what could go wrong! My bills are due, I cannot not seem to catch up and the more I get done the more I have to do; Praise be to God that I am walking and talking, smiling and helping others for I have learned to stay out of Gods business(me) do what He has asked me to do!

Susan Smith I actually agree with you. Way to put life into proper perspective! Having been both "on the mountain-top" and "in the valley" financially, I completely agree with your characterization of a majority of God-Followers.

Did the crowd give Obama a chance and if given the chance would he add that those who rely on Gods or guns to solve their problems are always disappointed? Guns are the helper of last resort for those who refuse to admit, "God helps those who help themselves." To that last bit of wisdom we can add, "God's helpers help themselves to that made by those God helps."

You're confused. The Bible is a poor place to find help from God for all but God's helpers who never tire of squeezing those nickles out of welfare cases while being recognized as charities. "Charity begins at home" is another bit of philosophy that God's helpers know all about while others relying on God for help ignore, "God helps those who help themselves."

The proper place to find philosophy for self help is Mark Twain. The one true God is the almighty dollar. Only religion operators get them by praying. Some religion operators know all about God and guns. The Muslim ministry is just ahead of the curve with their militias.

God and guns are two almighty entities the use of which brings mighty consequences. Let's see now. The God vote decided the last election. Next thing you know we'll be asked to vote the way Gun wants. When Pat Robertson says, "I spoke to Gun and He said vote for..." we'll know the end of something is near.

I definitely agree with this article it does seem that when people are going through situations they always turn to God to bring them out. But when everything is all right they don't even give God a "howdy- doo" acknowledging that he is keeping everything alright.

We has "saints" want to pray and fast to help us get something in return from God or answers from him BUT all this time you have been fasting from the Holy Sprit and His Presence to gain the worldly things and do what you want to feel like your life is being fulfilled to the fullest. In all actuality your life will never be fulfilled until it is filled with the Holy Sprit.

Once you have this you will not be satisfied by these worldly desires or needs. Everything you need God will provide and you wont dwell on what you don't have, and focus what you do have. Then you wont have to turn to negative things/actions that the enemy places in your life that you think you need to survive. That may be people, drugs, violence, etc!

You know what you need to do!!!! GOD IS THE ONLY ANSWER!! JOIN THE KINGDOM!

I missed that Obama comment but, as usual, his observation is poignant. The climate of our current times of uncertainty has spawned behaviors that defy explanation. A pastor colleague of ours says that desperate people do desperate things. In the wake of 9-11 church pews witnessed record numbers looking and listening for a word from God. Yet the numbers eventually dwindled back to the "usual." Obama's words ring true. The coupling of religion with guns in hard times makes quite a statement about our weapons of choice. It reveals the adage that "common sense" is no longer common. Our ancestors got along with much less than we under much worse circumstances. James Weldon Johnson's lyrics, "God of our weary years, God of our silent tears," tell of a tried and true faith in God--not guns.

Unfortunately religion when used as a last resort in bad times becomes more or less, a weapon--it hurts when this is the aim. Used as a last resort religion becomes an attachment with the strength of velcro. Lived as an ongoing anchor to one's existence religion can be a way out of no way! I am thankful for the tried and true faith of my maternal grandfather, who, though wounded by a racist's gun, kept on believing in the power of God throughout his life.

Sixty Minutes aired the story of a man living in Venezuela, who brought hope to desperate and poor children through music. One of the former violence-marked youth musicians said of the clarinet in his hands, "this feels much better than a gun." Don't you just love to hear outcomes like that??? As for me an my house, we will serve the Lord.
