The Thing with Feathers
Emily Dickinson called hope “the thing with feathers that perches in the soul”. For those impatient of poetry and who demand pose as the condition of political discourse, I’ll spell it out for you. What Dickinson meant is that hope is the spirit moving among and through us, lifting us up.
Hope is the profoundly religious cord that Obama has struck in the minds and hearts of Americans. Religion is the search for ultimate meaning and purpose in life. So many of us had become so stricken with despair in the last years; Americans were cowering in fear and living down to their worst selves, instead of aspiring to be our best selves. Parts of the Christian faith were even co-opted and dragged down to be a “wedge” to drive us apart and to fear one another.
The support for Obama is support for this message; the thirst for meaning even in the seeming desert of politics. Obama seems to have captured that longing. I don't believe it is a "brand" or "talking point" for him. I think it is part of his religious heritage.
The spiritual roots of hope are what I have learned more than anything else from African American spirituality. Here are people who were kidnapped, brutalized, treated as sub-human and held against their will in the most degraded conditions, and yet it is they who produced the spirituals (and the blues), the greatest forms of lyricism from the American pulpit and some of the most profound biblical interpretation in the history of Christianity. The deep meaning of hope is found in the fact that hope and suffering are inextricably linked.
Of course Obama learned “The Audacity of Hope” in church. When I am empty and tired and fed up, I too go to Trinity United Church of Christ to be inspired and renewed by the kind of community that knows that life is not just handed to you. You have to hope beyond hope and lift one another up to make it at all. When Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Jr. recently retired as senior pastor at Trinity UCC, I emailed him that I considered him the best theologian, hands down, I had ever heard from the pulpit. And believe me, I’ve heard a lot of preaching in my life.
You can’t thrive as a person of faith unless you can believe and you can’t believe unless you can hope. The poetics of the pulpit, rich with theological concepts like hope, are what enables us to listen to the song of the soul. “Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, And sings the tune—without the words, And never stops at all.”
“Poetry is not a luxury,” wrote Audre Lorde. Life is so hard, we need inspiration like we need air, like we need bread, like we need water, like we need God. The “religious fervor” some claim to see in the Obama campaign is part of the larger human need for a higher meaning and purpose. At least, I hope it is.

Well Concerned, I do not happen to have health insurance.
I am not old enough to get Medicare, and health insurance would be half our monthly income for me, while my internet is a minor expence (it's dialup), slow but cheap.
There are those who because they do not have to worry about the everyday nusences of healthcare, think it is just centered on choice.
I have had several serious eye surgeries and had to pay for them up front with a credit card. This is not efficent or wise, but too many have to do this. While paying that off, other things are ignored, like dentists, or other needed care.
Something has to happen in this country about healthcare...and I would not care if it was a red a$$ed babboon...I would vote for them if they had a good plan. Luckily I would not have to watch a babboon take the oath.

You object to sir precisely why? Last I checked it isn't a pejorative. You chose a male sir name therefore if one wishes to be polite to an opponent who is male 'sir' is the appropriate term.
It's mean to ask that people think for themselves? Could have fooled me! It's mean to state the truth as the facts clearly show? Get your feelings out of the way of your brain. It isn't helping you.
I have a few friends and a great many acquaintances.
That is as it should be. None of them consider me to be mean.
Why am I negative as regards Mr. Obama's Policies?
I am well read and I've seen them all before. They don't work. Let me put it this way. We are ensconced in a small lifeboat, me you and one other. the boat has a minor leak which will result eventually in it sinking however we intelligent people that we are have figure out that if two us row for a near by island while the third uses a small tin to bale out the boat as we go we should make it well before the boat sinks. The other in the boat has a different idea. He produces a cordless drill and proceeds to state that it would be much easier if we just drill a few hole in the bottom of the boat to let the water out and let the current moving us in that direction carry us there while we work on our tans.
Would you think it mean or unduly negative to:
A. When all attempts at logic have failed to throw the blasted drill overboard before then loon manages to drown us all?
B. When all attempts at logic fail to tell him to that if he even starts that drill and pretends to drill a hole in the bottom of the boat we will feed him and his drill to the sharks around us.
C. neither
D. Both.
Oh and a tinker's dam (no 'n') dates back to the days when the price of cookware represented a substantial part of a family's income. So rather than throw away a pot with a whole in it you got the local tinker (AKA Mr. Fixit) to repair the pot for you. Part of the repair process was to build up around the whole a small mound or dam of metal to keep the metal with which you were repairing the pot in place. This was later ground away by what ever means was readily at hand. A tinker's dam than came to mean something of no permanent intrinsic worth or value. Hence the phrase 'I don't give a tinker's dam would mean that the subject/object at hand is essentially meaningless to you or of no value to you. It was eventually shortened to I don't give a dam. And then some self important nabob thought the damn was of religious nature and the N was added where it had not previously been.

Thank you for including poetry in your entry and saying that "Religion is the search for ultimate meaning and purpose in life."
In that way, so many people from different religions and those with no faith at all, are in my opinion, religious.
I agree with Einstein when he said:
How can cosmic religious feeling be communicated from one person to another, if it can give rise to no definite notion of a God and no theology? In my view, it is the most important function of art and science to awaken this feeling and keep it alive in those who are receptive to it.

STOP CALLING ME SIR!
And just what is a "tinker's damn" that you don't care about?
As far as I can tell, your whole brain is one giant horrifying cliche.
I ask you why are you always in such a bad mood, always so negative, always looking for the worst in everyone and everything. Your answers are all just cliches.
You are not thinking, you are just parrotting plattitudes. What's the point? What IS the point?
And by the way, why are you so mean? You never said. And do you have any friends?

Daniel, another thing I care less than a tinkers dam about is peoples feelings. I don't much care sir what you feel, what I do care about is what you think and I would insist that you think. Your feelings my feelings anyones feelings are utterly irrelevant to the reality of the situation and may in fact run absolutely counter to solving the actual problems before us.

Eboo, Bin Laden, the Obfuscating Jihadist, Ahmed from Bahrain, Amr Khaled and all other Muslims suffer from 1400 years of Breeding, Birthing and Brainwashing in Islam. To counteract this, A Five Step Program has been developed to deprogram Islam. Once again:
Using "The 77 Branches of Islamic "faith" a collection compiled by Imam Bayhaqi as a starting point. In it, he explains the essential virtues that reflect true "faith" (iman) through related Qur’anic verses and Prophetic sayings." i.e. a nice summary of the Koran and Islamic beliefs.
"1. Belief in Allah"
"aka as God, Yahweh, Zeus, Jehovah, Mother Nature, etc." should be added to your cleansing neurons.
"2. To believe that everything other than Allah was non-existent. Thereafter, Allah Most High created these things and subsequently they came into existence."
Evolution and the Big Bang or the "Gib Gnab" (when the universe starts to recycle) are more plausible and the "akas" for Allah should be included if you continue to be a "creationist".
"3. To believe in the existence of angels."
A major item for neuron cleansing. Angels/devils are the mythical creations of ancient civilizations, e.g. Hittites, to explain/define natural events, contacts with their gods, big birds, sudden winds, protectors during the dark nights, etc. No "pretty/ugly wingy thingies" ever visited or talked to Mohammed, Jesus, Mary or Joseph or Joe Smith. Today we would classify angels as fairies and "tinker bells". Modern devils are classified as the demons of the demented.
"4. To believe that all the heavenly books that were sent to the different prophets are true. However, apart from the Quran, all other books are not valid anymore."
Another major item to delete. There are no books written in the spirit state of Heaven (if there is one) just as there are no angels/"pwtfft"s to write/publish/distribute them. The Koran, OT, NT etc. are simply books written by humans for humans.
Prophets were invented by ancient scribes typically to keep the uneducated masses in line. Today we call them fortune tellers.
Prophecies are also invalidated by the natural/God/Allah gifts of Free Will and Future.
"5. To believe that all the prophets are true. However, we are commanded to follow the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) alone."
Mohammed spent thirty days fasting in a hot cave before his first contact with Allah aka God etc. via a "pretty wingy thingy". Common sense demands a neuron deletion of #5.
#5 is also the major source of Islamic violence i.e. turning Mohammed's "fast, hunger-driven" hallucinations into horrible reality for unbelievers.
Accept these five "cleansers" and we guarantee a complete recovery from Islamic ways!!!!

GaryD, if you place all of your hope, trust, and faith in Christ, then why are you always so worked up about "things" and so negative, and always seeking to get in your personal jabs and digs at people, to hurt their feelings?
When you repeatedly referred to Obama's "Houston" speech, I did not know what you were talking about. Are you referring to the speech he just gave a couple of weeks ago? I listned to the whole thing; it was long, but I listened to every word, and all of it was good and made a lot of sense. I am not any expert on the "Nuremberg" rally, but what I know of the Nazis, they had extravagantly correographed events, with complex movements of thousands of flags, in geometric movements and designs. The speech I saw was a man speaking to an ordinary crowd of people, who listened and like what they heard.
If you don't like what you hear from him, then don't vote for him. If he wins anyway, then that is just the way our system works. Even if you believe that he has some nefarious scheme to undo American principles, just keep in mind that he is only the President, and even a Presidential power grab is not very effective; just look at Bush, and how all that he has tried to do is gradually unravelling, and will come undone completely, with the next President.
By the way that you post and the things that you say, I cannot see that you have much confidence in your own beliefs nor in Jesus Christ. So, of course, you are a curious puzzlement to me.

DANIEL IN THE LION'S DEN:
I, too, grew up in the awful era of Jim Crow. I was born and raised in my early childhood in Florida, another slave state.
Orlando in those days was divided between Blacks and whites by Church Street, a run-down section of abandoned buildings, now a thriving center of entertainment.
While I was still in kindergarten, I was riding a city bus one day when I looked up at a young Black man who was laughing like a jackass braying. I quickly grasped that he was laughing at me. I became terribly self-conscious and embarassed, imagining that I must have done something wrong, though I had no idea what the infraction was.
Finally, the young Negro stopped laughing at me and asked, "Boy, what are you doing back here?"
I stuttered and stammered that the bus driver said to move to the back of the bus.
The Black man laughed again, but kindly this time. "Boy," he explained, "he meant us."
I looked around at all the Black faces smiling warmly at me. I was still confused. I simply couldn't grasp the difference. I had no concept of race as a distinction between men.
More than half a century later, I still don't.

"Faith, hope, and charity, these three. But, the greatest of these is charity."
Charity in this sense is unfeigned, unselfish love.
One need not be religious to see the value in these qualities. E.g., one can have abiding faith in the United States, hope for a better future, and charity toward the world.
If you're concerned about Obama being a Black Man, just vote for the white half.

Daniel I am negative where it is the truth I am positive where that is the truth.
I don't overlook the warts in either those i support or those I do not support.
I'm not surprised you don't understand. You support Obama that means you willingly suspend your disbelief at the drop of a well chosen word.
I share the same dream Martin Luther King. As long as you insist on group think don't be surprised when some choose to think of that group as they do of its lowest common denominator.
Back in the Early seventies I was asked the same question by two very different people. One was a Missouri Klansmen and a proud Democrat, and the other was and African American(Afro-American at that time) Both got the same answer and I don't think it pleased either of them.
The question was:
What do I think of Black people?
Of course the Klansmen used a different word than black and I am equally sure you can guess what it was so I won't bother to mention it here.
My response was along the lines of: What a racist question! Why would you presume that I should have the same opinion of a black school teacher that I would of a black thief or of a black Doctor that I would of a Black murderer?
Get something straight sir. I don't give a tinkers dam what your racial or ethnic origins are nor am I overly concerned with what your father grandfather mother or grandmother did for a living.
You want to see some black heroes watch the movie 'Glory' or 'The Tuskegee Airmen'. Those men were heroes to the nth degree. People with immense dignity and honor. And further men who would be turning over in their graves to see what the drug dealers and pimps and the welfare plantation are doing to the people they fought and died for and put their lives on the line for so that they could have opportunities those men scarcely even dared dream about.
Get real sir look at what Obama's is promising you ask your self why you are willing to settle for more of the same when you could have the opportunity to become indeed all that you can be without it.

Hello Daniel in the Lion's Den,
The Republi-klan? lol.
I can see why Obama has such wide and diverse appeal among Americans. He is a reconciler of American divisions on race and politics.
We are having our general elections on 8 March 2008. The Parliament was dissolved on 14 February 2008.
It's a Parliamentary system. Elections to be held no later than five years after the incumbent government assumed power in Parliament and state legislative assemblies. But the elections were always called for after about four years.
The issues are race, religion, the economy, crime and corruption. It is getting interesting as people are tired of divisions too and fretted about inflation. The opposition are making headways.
I have a copy of Harper Lee's "To Kill a Mockingbird" and the DVD movie version too. It seems so far away in time, place and thinking and yet so possible still now anywhere and everywhere.
Obama is like Kennedy in some ways - a new hope, a new beginning.
Thanks and regards

Thank you Ms. Jihadist. GaryD is tripping, isn't he? I guess I really must be a pretty stupid person, because I can't make heads not tails of anything that he says, except that he is a pretty negative person, who always looks for the worst in everything and everyone.
I grew up in the Jim Crowe south. If you want to get just a hint of what my childhood was like, read the book (or watch the movie) "To Kill a Mockingbird." In those days, in the south, there was only one political question and it was clear: black and white. There was a clear good side to be on, and clear bad side to be on. Like Atticus Finch, my parents chose the good side, and they navigated our family and my young life through difficult waters, but always stayed on the good side, and always stood up to the bad.
When Obama first began to get some attention, I did not support him, because I did not think a black man could be elected President of the United States, and I didn't want to squander this opportunity to defeat the Republicans. (You know, we used to call them the Republi-Klan).
Now, I see, that it may be possible. Maybe a black man could be elected President of the United States, after all. I am hopeful. I had not realized that America had changed so much, but maybe it has; I am hopeful. He is running his campaign, not as a black man, for the interest of black people but as a man, who cares about everyone, almost as if there no race, and people, to my very extreme and profound suprise, are responding to him, in just the same way. GaryD just plain doesn't get it, comparing him to Adolph Hitler. (That absurd view actually makes me smile, a little).
As a white man, I must admit, that I have not heard even one single overtly racist comment or remark made in confidence about Obama, although I hear alot of white people, like GaryD, for example, grumbling about him, in general.
I am hopeful that a black man can be President of the United State. And if a black man cannot be, then I guess I would like to know that, too.
I do not expect Obama to cure all of our problems; many of them seem intractable. But if he were elected President of the United States, I think that America could at long last experience a relaxation of our unending migraine headache, which has been race.
That would be a most wonderful and excellent thing. I have never swooned in my life, although, once I did faint at a dance under the influence of the strobe light flashing. I do not swoon at Barak Obama's feet, as GaryD so thoughtlessly suggested, in his typically, overly dramatic and wrong characterization.
I just remember my childhood days, when we couldn't sit in the balcony at the movies, because that was where the "colored" people had to sit; and I marvel that a black man could be President. It is actually a wonderful and exhilerating feeling.
But if it is not possible, then, yes, I would like to know that, too.

The "reality challenged" and Obfuscating Jihadist supposedly reads bookl like Albert Camus' "The Myth of Sisyphus" but she cannot come to grips with the basic flaws in Islam??? Give us a break!!!
Once again said flaws:
1. Belief in "pretty/ugly wingie thingies".
2. Belief that an hallucinating, illiterate Arab did actually talk to the "pretty Gabriel" in the hot "Gabe" cave and therein received the warmongering and anti-female words and resultant laws now listed in the koran.
3. That Sunnis are superior to Shiites in all aspects of life. And Shiites think the same way about Sunnis.
4. That Islam is perfect and the koran inherently condones no sin even though the 24/7, 800 year-old blood feud between Sunnis and Shiites gives significant credence that greed, hate, suicides, assassinations, maiming, and murder are condoned by the koran. Having multiple wives also gives significant credence to the sins of rape, adultery, lust and polygamy. The condoned treatment of these wives gives credence that the koran allows the sins of hatred, anger and greed.
These are tough issues. Address them, correct them then ask again to be allowed into the civil world!!!!!
If you have counter points about your beliefs then list them. Hiding behind imams and clerics blinded by 1400 years of brainwashing serves no purpose other than to secure a dishonest living for said imams and clerics.

Daniel in the Lion's Den,
Hello my friend. I now see why you added 'in the Lion's Den to your handle. These On Faith threads do sometime have beastly posts from believers and athiests. Yes well, I can be a wee tigerish sometimes, but more often only kittenish. I'm no lion king or queen in On Faith's Lion's Den. Roar! Meow. Meow. Meow.
Gary D stated on Obama in response to you: "The measure of how stupid those swooning at his feet are is found in how little bait seems to be necessary in order to hook them."
I don't have the creatively of our friend David D to characterise it is as such on Obama and his followers. But he made a pertinent point on the appeal of Obama in offering "hope" and "change" as a political draw or pull to him.
You do recall that "hope" is spoken or written on, as in the hope of a people, it is sometimes as "hopes and fears". From fear comes hope. It is a fact that fear do and can give one courage to do something to overcome what causes fear in us.
It is indicative of the so many fears - political, security, economic and social, that people feel, and so responded to the message of "hope" and "change" as offered by Obama in his speeches - hope for something better and for change to make it better.
Thanks and regards
"J"

My apologies Daniel I forgot that the inability to see the forest for the trees is so common here.
I did not say Obama reminded me of Hitler rather that the Houston speech reminded me a bit of the Nuremberg rallies if you replaced Jews with rich people.
If that isn't sufficiently obvious let me know and I'll see If I can figure out how to say that in words of one syllable.
Who Mr. James said anything about stupid. Obama certainly isn't. He has rediscovered the old adage never use more bait than necessary to get the fish to take the hook. The measure of how stupid those swooning at his feet are is found in how little bait seems to be necessary in order to hook them.

Mindless Obama and His Supporters
Oh yes!!! Obama and his supporters are CLEARLY mindless (and, let us presume, deluded).
Obama was ELECTED the Editor of the Harvard Law Review, notoriously a post reserved for dummies.
A professor of his at the mediocre law school he attended called him "the most intelligent student I ever taught."
The voters he does best with are the best educated voters in the electorate. (though he is gaining with those voters who have less education).
Mindless????????????????????????

MS Thistlewaithe, You have in my none to humble opinion produce far more than your fair share of down right silly comments here but your current post sinks so far below even your usual standards that I am totally taken aback.
Hope is completely void unless it is placed in something of substance and as of yet Senator Obama has given precious little if anything of substance in which to place these hopes. Oh his recently release economics speech told us quite loudly that we should put our hope in government, specifically government run by him but the fact of the matter is that if that is your only hope you are one pathetic excuse for a human being if not a complete waste of oxygen.
I've heard excerpts from Obama's Houston speech. All that kept running though my head as I listened was Nuremberg 1933. Replace Jews with cororations and the rich and it is essentially the same speech.

'Emily Dickinson called hope “the thing with feathers that perches in the soul”.'
T.S. Eliot was right when he wrote, in East Coker:
"I said to my soul, be still, and wait without hope..."
Why?
Because those things with feathers that perch are prone to crap on your head and then fly away.
Just like hopes.

Terra: because of a lack of space, I'll make only a few comments on your post about hope and Sen. Obama.
I agree, Obama deserves praise for his role in the Kidcare legislation in Illinois. Kidcare, like similar State Children's Health Insurance Programs (S-CHIPs) around the country, is a child of the federal Children's Health Insurance Program (CHIP) law. Guess who had a hands-on major role in the creation of CHIP: HILLARY. You may even say the Mother of all Kidcares and S-CHIPS!
U.S. Senate Ethics Legislation: Again, Obama deserves kudos for his major role in the passage of the 2007 Ethics Bill. But it's so riddled with loopholes that it bans a lobbyist paying for a Senator's meal if both are sitting at the table. But if the lobbyist is sitting and the Senator is standing, why, the tab for both can legally be picked up by the lobbyist. SOME ETHICS CHANGE!
International Affairs: Obama is the Chairman of a Senate Sub-Committee on Europe and NATO. For over a year now, the Taliban insurgency in Afghanistan has been gaining strength; but our NATO partners are not adding to their military contributions to counter the Taliban. The situation is so dire that you, no doubt, have heard Sec. of Defense Gates and other Joint Chiefs high brass publicly call on NATO nations to increase their contributions. The House Committees responsible for NATO have held many meetings on the serious matter. FOR OVER A YEAR NOW, OBAMA HAS NOT HELD A SINGLE MEETING TO FIND OUT HOW NATO NATIONS ARE GOING TO HELP MEET THE NEW TALIBAN THREAT. But then he has plenty of hope for all our problems!
You say he toured the Middle East; but I think you'd agree that the major recent event about peace in the Middle East was the agreement reached in Annapolis, MD, calling for a TWO-STATE SOLUTION. Pres. Bush adopted this policy back in 2001. But on May 6, 1998, in a satellite address to 75 Israeli and Arab teenagers attending the Summit For Peace in Villars, Switzerland, a Lady called for A 2-STATE SOLUTION to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. She was roundly condemned here in the U.S. and in Israel for her proposal, because that idea was A TABOO at the time. Denunciations were so loud and widespread that her own husband's administration publicly disavowed her proposal. Nine and a half years later, at the conference in MD, the international community agreed with her, after all. Yes, it was the Hillary Lady, almost 10 years ahead of the time. Obama deserves praise for going to the Middle East; but the H lady deserves much, much more.
And there is more....., but space and time are limited. Ciao! readerK.

You heard Obama say anything like, "Hope is the profoundly religious cord that Obama has struck in the minds and hearts of Americans."??
He gave a half dozen examples of what he meant when he says "hope" and none of them had anything to do with religion or any supernatural beings etc of any kind. He even left reverend off referring to "Dr King" using his words as one way of saying what he meant. The successful civil rights movement came in spite of religion -Souther Baptist in particular now known as evangelicals. Religion is the opposite of hope. There's little hope to be found in terror. "Unless you accept Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior" is totally void in hope.
Your essay is all about a hope that is without foundation. You hope the Bible is God's word while in your heart you know IT was Devil in the burning bush. Obama knows that.
http://www.hoax-buster.org/sellyoursoul He's going to give tax breaks where they are needed, the middle class and tax hell, (no pun intended) out of religious terrorists. The next terror attack is under way and comes form evangelical ministers threatening people with the greatest terror ever conceived, the fires of hell.
Religion is KAPUT.

Instead of embracing some form of religion, the candidates should ID the flaws in all religions.
A synopsis of the flaws in the founders and foundations of the major religions for those that have not seen them before or did not take the time to look:
1. Abraham founder/father of three major religions was either the embellishment of the lives of three different men or a mythical character as was Moses, the "Tablet-Man" who talked to burning bushes and made much magic in Egypt.
1.5 million Conservative Jews and their rabbis have relegated Abraham to the myth pile along with most if not all the OT. http://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/ConservativeTorah.htm
2. Jesus, the illiterate Jewish peasant/carpenter possibly suffering from hallucinations, has been characterized anywhere from the Messiah from Nazareth to a mythical character from mythical Nazareth to a mamzer from Nazareth (Professor Bruce Chilton, in his book Rabbi Jesus). Analyses of Jesus’ life by many contemporary NT scholars (e.g. Professors Crossan, Borg and Fredriksen, On Faith panelists) via the NT and related documents have concluded that only about 30% of Jesus' sayings and ways noted in the NT were authentic. The rest being embellishments (e.g. miracles)/hallucinations made/had by the NT authors to impress various Christian, Jewish and Pagan sects.
The 30% of the NT that is "authentic Jesus" like everything in life was borrowed/plagiarized and/or improved from those who came before. In Jesus' case, it was the ways and sayings of the Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Hittites, Canaanites, OT, John the Baptizer and possibly the ways and sayings of traveling Greek Cynics. http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/theories.html
For added "pizzazz", Catholic/Christian theologians divided god the singularity into three persons and invented atonement as an added guilt trip for the "pew people" to go along with this trinity of overseers. By doing so, they made god the padre into god the "filicider".
3. Mohammed, an illiterate, womanizing, lust and greed-driven,warmongering, hallucinating Arab, also had embellishing/hallucinating/plagiarizing scribal biographers who not only added "angels" and flying chariots to the koran but also a militaristic agenda to support the plundering and looting of the lands of non-believers.
This agenda continues as shown by the assassination of Bhutto, the conduct of the seven Muslim doctors in the UK, the 9/11 terrorists, the 24/7 Sunni suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the 24/7 Shiite suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the Islamic bombers of the trains in the UK and Spain, the Bali crazies, the Kenya crazies, the Pakistani “koranics”, the Palestine suicide bombers/rocketeers, the Lebanese nutcases, the Taliban nut jobs, and the Filipino “koranics”.
And who funds these acts of terror? The warmongering, Islamic, Shiite terror and torture theocracy of Iran aka the Third Axis of Evil and also the Sunni "Wannabees" of Saudi Arabia.
4. Luther, Calvin, Joe Smith, Henry VIII, Wesley et al, founders of Christian-based religions, also suffered from the belief in/hallucinations of "pretty wingy talking flying fictional thingie" visits and "prophecies" for profits analogous to the myths of Catholicism (resurrections, apparitions, ascensions and immaculate conceptions).
5. Hinduism (from an online Hindu site) - "Hinduism cannot be described as an organized religion. It is not founded by any individual. Hinduism is God centered and therefore one can call Hinduism as founded by God, because the answer to the question ‘Who is behind the eternal principles and who makes them work?’ will have to be ‘Cosmic power, Divine power, God’."
The caste/laborer system and cow worship are problems when saying a fair and rational God founded Hinduism."
6. Buddhism- "Buddhism began in India about 500 years before the birth of Christ. The people living at that time had become disillusioned with certain beliefs of Hinduism including the caste system, which had grown extremely complex. The number of outcasts (those who did not belong to any particular caste) was continuing to grow."
"However, in Buddhism, like so many other religions, fanciful stories arose concerning events in the life of the founder, Siddhartha Gautama (fifth century B.C.):"
Archaeological discoveries have proved, beyond a doubt, his historical character, but apart from the legends we know very little about the circumstances of his life. e.g. Buddha by one legend was supposedly talking when he came out of his mother's womb.
Bottom line: There are many good ways of living but be aware of the hallucinations, embellishments, lies and myths surrounding the founders and foundations of said rules of life.

Susan: What do you make of the criticism
Obama has been getting because his pastor
is seen as rather radical?
I know many would say "tell me who you listen to/which church you attend" and I will tell
you who you are, ignoring "tell me what YOU
say, and, especially, what YOU DO" and I will
tell you who you are.
Of course, I'm still hearing unknowing radio
callers on conservative radio programs calling
in to state boldly that Barack is Muslim. In all
cases, I've heard the host correct the caller.
However, that opens the door to flog the pastor
of Trinity UCC and leads to "if Obama attends this church, what will he do to America?"
How do you get your hands around that and come up with something true, meaningful, and useful?

Anon and Caroline,
I wonder if either of you have bothered to listen to any of Obama's speaches? Have you bothered to discover his background or his accomplishments?
Mindless following...pardon me if I am put 0ff by the view that because I and others have bothered to research Obama and have decided to go with him that we are mindless. I remember JFK...I also remember Bobby and MLK and many other people that spoke words of wisdom, and followed the words with actions.
Mindless?
So that would mean there is no reason to be for obama?
Barack Obama is a progressive. He has an 82.5 liberal rating in 2005 by the National Journal. On votes in the U.S. Senate that were decided largely along party lines, Senator Obama sided with the Democrats 97% of the time. And he had a liberal voting record in the Illinois State Senate. In 2006, he received 100% approval rating from: The League of Conservation Voters (he opposed drilling in ANWR, and in parts of Gulf of Mexico); AFL-CIO (he sponsored legislation blocking overtime restrictions by the Bush administration); Planned Parenthood. The National Education Association gives him an "A" on their most recent scorecard.
In an interview, Senator Obama stated that his signature bills while in Springfield, the ones he's most proud of, were: expanding Kidcare (health insurance for an additional 20,000 Illinois children); welfare reform (a bipartisan bill passed in Republican controlled senate, generating major headlines); earned income tax credit (tax relief for working poor families); and death penalty reform. (He supports the death penalty in exceptional circumstances, but wanted all interrogations to be videotaped. Initially viewed as a highly controversial proposal, Senator Obama listened to all sides of the debate, incorporated ideas from many individuals, and the result was a bill that passed the Senate 58-0, and was signed into law by a governor who originally opposed Senator Obama's bill.)
I would add to his major achievements in Springfield: campaign finance reform; and ethics reform. These were considered major accomplishments in Illinois. When Senator Obama entered the Illinois Senate, he told Emil Jones, the Democratic majority leader in the Illinois Senate, that he wanted to work hard. He asked Senator Jones to send him any difficult assignments. On the issue of campaign finance reform, he was handpicked by Mr. Jones to lead the Democrats' senate efforts at campaign finance reform. (Senator Obama wanted to limit individual contributions, but nipped and tucked seeking consensus. Obama was pragmatic. The result was the most ambitious campaign finance reform in nearly 25 years, according to good government groups.)
Senator Obama demonstrated political courage in opposing bills he believed were unconstitutional or poorly written, even if the vote could later be used in misleading 30 second commercials against him. He opposed a bill to toughen penalties for violent crimes committed by gang activity, because the bill didn't clearly define a gang member, and seemed targeted at Hispanics and Blacks. (This does not mean he is soft on crime. He also voted for, or sponsored, over 100 bills to strengthen criminal penalties (e.g. against sex offenders, domestic violence, drug dealers)). He opposed a bill that allowed home owners to use a gun in self defense in their homes. (He opposed that bill because it only applied to towns that already prohibited any private citizen from possessing a handgun. He opposed it because the law could lead to homeowners using guns in the street. He also wanted to defer to local governments.) He also opposed a measure which proponents claimed was designed to protect "live babies born during abortion procedures." (He felt the measure would define a fetus as a person and criminalize every abortion.) His death penalty reform bill was also given little chance of being passed into law, yet was eventually passed by unanimous consent of the Senate. (Audacity of Hope, pp 58-59)
When Democrats finally achieved a majority in the state senate, Senator Obama was elevated to Chairman of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee; 2003-2004 were the only two years Barack Obama has ever been in a political majority in either Illinois or (until recently) Washington, D.C. During those two years, he sponsored 780 bills, and 280 of those were signed into law.
He sponsored laws against discrimination of gays in employment and housing. (It passed after he left Springfield.) He work on a ban on assault weapons. He supported a bill to allow retired officers can carry concealed weapons. He worked worked for legislation to expand health insurance coverage. (He proposed a study on how to provide universal health care to everyone in Illinois backed by a single payer health care plan run by the state.) He helped pass bills to increase aids funding. He sponsored a bill to investigate racial profiling by police, essentially second guessing police officers. (By incorporating the best ideas from all sides on this and other bills, he even managed to win the endorsement of the state police officers union when he ran for U.S. Senate.)
Senator Obama has a reputation of being a quick study on complex political issues. Many in Springfield commented on this - so has Senator Lugar in Washington, D.C. (Together, they sponsored the Lugar-Obama Bill. It's an anti-proliferation bill that expands on existing efforts to locate and destroy WMDs, e.g. shoulder fired missiles and antipersonnel mines.)
ethics reform; campaign finance reform; welfare reform; considering universal health care, and expanding health care for children; laws banning discrimination against gays and lesbians; overhauled the capital punishment system; funded a systematic investigation of racial profiling; voted to increase the minimum wage (from $5.15 to 6.50); helped pass earned income credit for working poor families; voted for embryonic stem cell research; voted to end $300 million in tax breaks for businesses.
Perhaps his most impressive accomplishment in the U.S. Senate happened on January 18, 2007. That is when the Senate passed a major ethics/lobbying reform bill. (Senator Obama had voted against a prior ethics reform bill that he said wasn't tough enough.) Newspapers give Senators Obama and Russ Feingold significant credit for insisting that this latest ethics bill included tough measures. Obama risked some political capital to get this bill passed. The bill bans gifts/meals from lobbyists; puts an end to subsidized corporate jets; requires full disclosure of earmarks (who are the earmarks for, and for what purpose); places restrictions on retiring members of Congress going immediately into lobbying; requires lobbyists to disclose bundling of contributions to Congress, candidates or committees. This was a HUGE victory for Senator Obama.
Senator Democratic leader Harry Reid has designated Barack Obama as the Democrats' point man on ethics, citing three reasons for his selection: whenever Obama walks into a room, everyone stops talking and listens to what he has to say; Obama is known for having unquestionable ethics and integrity; Obama's expertise on ethics and campaign reform while in Springfield made him a leading expert on those same issues in the U.S. Senate. This last point can't be emphasized enough. The fact that Obama mastered, and led the fight, on so many complex political issues in eight years in Springfield gave him a huge head start in addressing the same complex issues at the federal level.
Senator Obama also has experience and judgment on foreign policy. He is on the senate committees for foreign relations; homeland security; veterans affairs; health, education, labor and pensions. He studied political science with an emphasis on international relations and Columbia. And he's gone on three major trips overseas as part of an official Senate delegation, meeting with U.S. generals, and/or foreign leaders. He and Senator Lugar travelled to the former Soviet states to inspect the destruction of WMDs; he traveled to Iraq and met with U.S. generals, and also toured Kuwait, Jordan, Israel, Palestinian territories (he told Palestinian Authority President MahMoud Abbas that US would never recognize Hamas leaders until they renounced mission to eliminate Israel.); he visited various African countries, including Kenya (his father's homeland), and publicly took an AIDS test to show people in Africa that it was ok and even socially responsible to have an AIDS test.
And there is more...

Mindless? No..there is a good reason to vote for Obama...there is no reason not to.
And I am Pagan...

"You can’t thrive as a person of faith unless you can believe and you can’t believe unless you can hope."
--------------------
As a person without faith, and happy for it, this article and the above quoted statement from the article leave me both cold and fearful. It leaves me cold because the argument in favor of Obama's hope is a theological argument-- the kind of argument that should and must by law be excluded from policy in the U.S.A., in order to ensure religious freedom to all citizens. The article leaves me fearful because it appears to support and promote the primacy of orthodox religious theology in justifying cures for what ills the country. That primacy would threaten my religious freedom as well as the freedom of millions of other Americans. If that is the "hope" that Mr. Obama is offering, I want none of it - it is bad for democracy and freedom, and it runs counter to the first amendment to the Constitution.

hope exists not
from the use of books
written by crooks known to be
nothing
more than what they seem.
its strange-to me- to think
that a bloody drink
can mean more than a hangover,
a headache, and a dream,
but thats what it is,
and will be
until my hope for a land
free from fanciful lies
and cries of "shame on you/shame on me"
comes into being like a phoenix
burned through the seams.
no, you've got it wrong my foul-weather friends:
hope exists free from your religious decree.

I must add a hearty "AMEN" to the comments of "Anonymous" with regard to the uneasiness I too feel regarding the almost mindless following that is rising up behind Obama. Comparing him to JFK is like comparing a Ken doll to George Clooney. Something is lost in the translation there. Kennedy spent a lifetime in training and performing public service. Assuming him to have a true understanding and empathy to the plight of African-American slaves and their true descendents is less than truthful. But the point where it became painfully, and scarily, obvious that this emperor stands naked in the square is when the press began to give him "messianic" status...and he stands basking in that false light. As a follower and servant of Christ, I can think of no shakier ground upon which he could stand. As a citizen, I want someone who has true substance, not situational bravado.. and good speech writers and spin doctors. Regretably, I'm not sure there is such a candidate out there anymore.

As an individual who was raised Catholic while living in a community surrounded by Southern Baptists, I have come to believe that spirituality and religion are two entirely different concepts. The word "religion" or phrases such as "religious experiences" bring out a visceral disgust that immediately bring to mind a cynicism of anything associated with organized religion. Spirituality, on the other hand is about internal motivation for good and represents those ideas and concepts that should truly be respected and aspired to in this day and age - at least in my mind. This viewpoint is only one of many reasons that I do not support Obama's candidacy. The sermon-like speeches and the adoring masses who don't question the policies behind the man, leave me with an uneasy feeling. I prefer a leader who has shown an ability to lead through actions, as opposed to a borrower of words who creates fervor that may or may not mask lack of substance.

Adding to the first comment by E FAVORITE, Obama is the son of an immigrant from Kenya, not a descendant of slaves, so he is no more an inheritor of the tradition that Thistlethwaite refers to than George Bush, Jennifer Lopez, or Jackie Chan.

In order to be a supporter of Obama I have to have a sufficient level of hope, is that it? Or Religion, or both?
How about if I like Obama because he's NOT Hillary and he's NOT McCain? I like the fact that he's so far out of their league when it comes to dealing with a political opponent that they don't know how to deal with im ... Hillary and McCain are "old school" politicians, everything I despise about the two party system is well represented in both of these candidates, taken separately or together.
Everything these two know about how to be a politician in modern America is being used against Obama and he just goes on like he can't hear them.
Which is what I can't do - hear them.
How about if I like Obama but don't vote for him? I'm allowed to do that you know. I want to see the republicans and democrats frothing at the mouth over how much they hate the fact that they no longer understand the electorate.

While I agree with your conclusion, that "the “religious fervor” some claim to see in the Obama campaign is part of the larger human need for a higher meaning and purpose," I disagree with your opening.
Hope in not a specifically 'religious' state. It is a profoundly state, something we all need. Though many find that hope in religion, it can come from any number of other places. I am not religious yet I see the hope that Sen. Obama offers. When you limit hope to having a religious origin, you ignore and diminish the hopes of those who do not share your theistic views.
"Higher meaning and purpose" are not limited to religion.

Susan - Be careful when you associate "african-american spirituality" with Obama. He was raised mainly by his white grandparents and didn't join that mainly black UCC church in Chicago until he was an adult.
