From Prophetic to Pathetic: Handouts from Cesar
Q: Dozens of major religious groups and denominations are urging Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. to renounce a Bush-era memo that allows faith-based charities that receive federal funding to discriminate in hiring. Should religious charities that receive federal grant money be allowed to discriminate in hiring?
If Uncle Sam decides to partner with Rev. Smith, Rabbi Goldstein or Imam Ali, then collaboration requires conformity to religious tenets on one hand and subjugation to Federal law on the other. Percolating out of this awkward and uncomfortable concoction is the offspring of a secular government and a religious institution that at end of the day, without the right to self preservation of doctrine and beliefs by both parties, will result in a faith that sacrifices doctrinal purity for the sake of financial gain.
Accordingly, we should ask whatever happened to give unto Cesar what belongs to Cesar and to God what belongs to God? Why are faith-based groups begging Uncle Sam for crumbs when by our very nature we epitomize faith, and consequently serve as the proponents of a simplistic message reconciling the fishes and the bread. Let me be clear. I have no problem if Uncle Sam comes to the Church and recognizes that faith-based groups execute ministry to the poor and hurting in a more constructive and holistic manner than government ever can.
After all, this is our mission. From Isaiah 61 to Luke 4 and Matthew 25, all major religious faith narratives stand spiritually and morally committed to the restoration of lives and the renewing of dreams. However, I find repugnant the very thought of a faith-based group approaching government begging for funding to accomplish a Divine mandate of charity and compassion.
Correspondingly, when accepting subsidies from Cesar, synagogues, churches, temples and mosques in essence agree to Cesar's rules. As a strong advocate of religious exclusion clauses both incorporated in proposed ENDA (Employment Non Discrimination Act) legislation and included in previous Faith Based Initiative guidelines, I find myself more concerned than ever about this awkward convergence of public money and faith-based organizations.
At the end of the day, if Uncle Sam wants our help, then we will assist. However, do not require us to change our beliefs or surrender or theological doctrine at the altar of financial expediency. On the other hand, if ever Rev. Smith, Rabbi Goldstein or Imam Ali approach the corridors of Capitol Hill asking Cesar for financial assistance, then their corresponding faiths transition from the sanctuary of the prophetic to the arena of the pathetic.

If Rev. or Fr. Mendoza wants federal funding, he should move out of the religion business and do something worthy of nonprofit status.
As it is, Rev., Fr., Sr. Mendoza should not be given nonprofit status, let alone faith-based funding for his/her house of worship or anything related to it.
The same holds true for Rabbi Mendoza and Imam Mendoza.

hi i think you have this correct. In my thinking for a church or religion even contemplate the need to get Government funding or take government funding would in it's essence i think be an admission of failure in some fundamental way of the churches purpose, mission, and interactions with their communities. It's like the fake idea you need big charities to help people,, all you need to do is give directly to the need and I wonder how many more times money would work if people passed it on freely, because a gift has no conditions or expectations a grant an employment or a servitude or coercion do.. churches and churchmembers like the rest of the members of the community co-habitate with all kinds of like minded and non like minded people. There is no one size fits all in america in its essence and concept it is maybe more like ..all of the above when forced to make a choice, not related to health or safety. I suspect we are talking about the two masters meta-4 here and I would make money and power inter woven in our..uhhhh .. modern society. If the churches didn't actually feel they needed the tax payer money i can't think of any scenario where they would place themselves in a position of subservience which if you are a willing participator in receiving government taxpayer money you have to be, it is not a choice under the constitution or the bible. I wonder some times if some of the people in power lately claiming to be religious and faithful .. have even read the Bible much less understand what it says. I guess if churches insist upon getting government money then at some point it would be reasonable to ask them to take a test and see if they actually qualified to speak as an expert witness. Please don't accuse me of wanting to add government control over religion. I am more on the path that Martin Luther took many centuries ago when he said the Bible should be translated into the language of the actual people so they could understand the wisdom and not have to rely... or was it buy ....thier right 2 salvation. I think this is what Jesus was actually wanting to do not what Peter actually did maybe. i wasn't there so mine is just an opinion. Peter was a disciple and a great human being but being human means that he was subject to making human mistakes. For this reason i have always personally taken the words actually attributed to Jesus and given them more weight since he was more than human. It makes logical sense that the wider you make the circle of people who understand and have actually read and studied something the more effective it could actually be implemented in society. You do not actually need a building to have a church i suspect thier may be some places that look like churches but are just buildings that are empty except on a few hours on Sunday and wed.
