Obama seeks God's blessing in gulf storm
The most poignant and unexpected moment of President Obama's address to the nation Tuesday night about the Gulf oil spill was his reference to "The Blessing of the Fleet."
"Each year, at the beginning of shrimping season, the region's fishermen take part in a tradition that was brought to America long ago by fishing immigrants from Europe. It's called 'The Blessing of the Fleet,'" he said, "and today it's a celebration where clergy from different religions gather to say a prayer for the safety and success of the men and women who will soon head out to sea -- some for weeks at a time."
I couldn't help but think that the president was referring to himself as he described being "in the midst of the storm."
This has been a rough month for Obama. He has been roundly criticized, even by his supporters, for responding too late, for not displaying leadership, for not being tough enough on BP and for allowing the chaos and disarray in the Gulf to perpetuate.
Even the cool Barack Obama has a tipping point. He appeared nervous and a bit awkward at the start of his speech, looking almost like a schoolboy about to address the student body for the first time. He didn't seem to have his usual confidence, and one can understand why. Nobody knows what to do and he's getting all the blame.
He did lay out some plans, though none was specific enough to satisfy the pundits afterward and he seemed to know it. His speech was delivered without a huge amount of energy, as though he were ticking off, point by point, what he had to say -- hoping, but not necessarily knowing, that his ideas could be effective.
It was only when he got to the end and began to talk about faith that his body language changed and he became earnest about something he truly believed.
He told of how the Blessing of the Fleet "goes on in good times and in bad," after Hurricane Katrina and at the beginning of this fishing season.
"As a priest and former fisherman once said of the tradition," Obama said, " 'The blessing is not that God has promised to remove all obstacles and dangers. The blessing is that He is with us always,' a blessing that's granted ... 'even in the midst of the storm.' "
America, the president reminded us, has been through bad times before:
"What sees us through - what has always seen us through -- is our strength, our resilience, and our unyielding faith that something better awaits if we summon the courage to reach for it. Tonight we pray for that courage. We pray for the people of the Gulf. And we pray that a hand may guide us through the storm toward a brighter day," he said.
Obama made a reference to clergy of different religions, but gone were his usual assurances that he was directing his words to people of no faith as well.
It was a "there are no atheists in foxholes" speech. He was summoning his God, not just to help the people of the Gulf through this crisis but himself as well. Obama is normally measured in his discussion about religion. Tonight he was totally out there, supplicating for "the hand" to guide him.
***
The Blessing of the Fleet occurs every October at St. Clement's Island http://www.7thdistrictoptimist.org/Blessing.html in Southern Maryland, to remember the boats that carried the first English settlers to that state in 1633.
Lucille Clifton, the African American author who died earlier this year, was a professor emeritus at St. Mary's College, not far from St. Clement's. She wrote a poem about blessing the boats; she might well have written it for Barack Obama.
may the tide
that is entering even now
the lip of our understanding
carry you out
beyond the face of fear
may you kiss
the wind then turn from it
certain that it will
love your back may you
open your eyes to water
water waving forever
and may you in your innocence
sail through this to that

And thus we see how we are humbled (or humiliated, as the case may be). It is not by what God does to us, but by what we do to ourselves (and others) while trying to get along without Him. God respects our freedom of self determination enough to only succor us when we ask. Pity those who never ask.
I did not hear the President's talk, but if he really is turning to God, that, for me, is a glimmer of hope.

Frankly, I strongly suspect that the Deity/Deities are hearing all of these prayers and saying, "No. You Humans did this - YOU fix it! Don't come crying to us because you messed up what was given to you."

i [WE] remember as an "Deep-Sea Sailor" (not "Sindbad the Sailor" story or 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea" et al) & International Traveler; that there was always 'This Feeling'' that We Mariner's Arose from The Holy-Sea & not risen from the Rain-Forests.

There are three specific religion commandments in the U.S. Constitution. The President needs to read them. I write about all three in The Religion Commandments in the Constitution: A Primer. If this is inappropriate in this place for commentary, the moderator can certainly delete it, but someone needs to speak up for the constitutional principle of "separation between Religion and Government," James Madison, W&MQ 3:555. I majored in religion and have an M.Div. in order to have some background for speaking out in respect to the issue of religion and government. The President should know better.

I thought it was a serious speech from a fine man. It is a great relief to have a man (finally) in the White House that can be trusted. And as for the reference to God at the end, it hit the spot for me. As did Sally Quinn's article. Thank you. I have mailed it to friends and family.
I also very much liked the quote," If God listened to the prayers of men, all men would quickly have perished : for they are forever praying for evil against one another. "
A truth well demonstrated in the tirades generated by this blog.

Although it looks like the party of God's righteousness have won one, the cold hard fact is Obama picked up the "Blessing of the Fleet" story because it links almost perfectly with various Islamic stories about Zam-Zam water ~
Interesting.

I am not a believer but I thought it was poignant and powerful also, and very appropriate for a region that is comfortable talking in religious terms. If this gave comfort to those in the Gulf, that is part of the president's job as well as giving material aid and services (the latter being, of course, the main part).
Really, on the speech as a whole, people seemed to have their minds made up before hearing it. It was disheartening to see Rachel Maddow make fun of this closing as though the rest of the speech hadn't happened and he was simply giving up and praying. She is too smart for the deliberate distortion that she sometimes slips into, and it detracts from her show.

Only God knows Obama's heart.
Cynics, hypocrites, and unbelievers are just that. Cynical, hypocritical, and unbelieving people.
If Obama had to put his trust, his hope, and his faith in cynical, angry, hostile, hypocritical people, and people that are unbelieving, they would destroy him in seconds.
With that I will say, I would rather Obama put his trust in God, then the work of the Devil.
Besides, it's not about them and Obama anyway, it's about him and his God.

Poignant?! I thought it was weak and lame. Cynical pandering at its worst. Turn to exhortations to pray when all else fails - as it has. Then you can claim it's "God's will."
What is the point of praying when innocent, defenseless birds, fish an animals have been condemned to such a hideous fate? If that's your idea of "God" you can have it.
If "God" exists, then "God" sucks. "God" is evil. "God" is for fools. If I believed in "God," I would HATE "God."
What is wrong with you people?
Pray! Pray! Pray! See what good it does you. See how the oil magically lifts away from all the condemned birds. See how the oild stops flowing. See how BP ever pays a single dime.
Your prayers and three dollars will buy you a gallon of gas.

Obama during his campaign mocked people who rely on religion.
But when he's falling in the polls, he starts invoking God's name over and over.
Such hypocrisy. I suspect God will simply say "I don't know this man" and will ignore him.

To seek God's help is evidently a proof of weakness. As for prayers, may I please refer to what the Greek philosopher Epicurus ( 341 - ca. 271 BC ) said a long time ago :
" If God listened to the prayers of men, all men would quickly have perished : for they are forever praying for evil against one another " .

Obama's appeal to "the Great Spirit" (aka "God") will produce the same good effect that the Knights Templar received, when, huddled under The True Cross at the Horns of Hattin overlooking the Sea of Galillee, and surrounded by Saladin's forces, they made the same appeal for deliverance from their dire circumstance.
Of course they were all slaughtered.

The conclusion of Obama's speech was disheartening and demoralizing. All he can offer is magical incantations. No policy, no leadership, just the picture of a president curled into the fetal position, hoping for the miracle which will never come.

Ok so I am thinking that there are several massive oil reservoirs under the gulf. I am also thinking that the hundreds of oil rigs are drawing off of the same massive oil reservoir. Say that there are 100 oil rigs drawing oil off the same source. The pressure of the oil reservoir will be divided amount the 100 wells. Now if you shut off 99 oil wells and leave one oil well open; The pressure coming from the open oil well will be a lot greater than before.
So by shutting down all the oil wells in the gulf what have we done? Let me explain this. While all the oil wells were open it was like we were running water out of a drinking straw. Now with only one well head open it is like a fire hose at full blast. So now ask yourself , "Who is to blame for this huge disaster".

I wish presidents would eschew the prayers they increasingly turn to - in the oval office no less! I didn't vote for an American Pontiff.
Let him give a prayer in church - in the national cathedral - if he must do so at all.
I resent this evangelizing in office.

God knows we have control over most of what we have here on the planet. We are supposed to be in his image. BUT, to be like God Man has a long hard road ahead of him. Whether Obama believes in Allah, God, The Great Spirit, Buddah or leprechauns, it doesnt mean a thing.....He is a man that has taken the helm of the USS GoingUnder. He seems alone, he seems like he is learning along the way as any President does during crisis' Whether he really believes in a Higher Power I hope the Power is good.
