Frankly I don't care with whom a person associates. I do care what a person says and does and what character a person has formed. A person’s deeds and words signify a person’s character and beliefs much more reliably than a person’s associations. I care about a person’s beliefs only in so far as it may impact policy decisions. I would have no difficulty voting for a person of any faith or no faith so long as he/she was of good character and made sound policy decisions.

PS. I wonder if the issue of association is more important for rural and small town voters than it is for urban voters since in the city one often associates with many people without endorsing their beliefs, words, or actions.

So it may not be strange to couple Palin with the other things taught in the Bible since she bases her conscience on being informed by that book. There is so much that is here but Palin radiates a freshness of independence and quality of life that strikes me as healthy for America.

As far as I can tell, few politicians today have an informed conscience. Most of them are on the take. The Bible speaks of people that can be trusted are those who do not take bribes.

I don't care per se what Palin believes so long as she understands it is her personal choice and not to be imposed on those of us who believe differently. Unfortunately a great deal of what she does believe insists that this must be so for everyone. Once you decide that your personal beliefs belong in the political arena you not only go against the Constitution, but you inflame tensions between everyone. This is one major difference between Obama's faith and Palin's. Obama has made it clear- as has Biden- that their personal choice in their faith is exactly that- personal. While I'm sure there will be times when political decisions will be made founded on their faith, there is no overweening determination to push their religious agenda on the public at large.

Palin's associations are disturbing because they are extreme, they involve a belief that there is a religious endgame (rather bloody and lethal) that must be played out, and a vibrant lack of reason. Pastor Muthee, like the with hunters of Salem, has no difficulty deciding who is a witch, that they are evil, and that they must be acted on. In his country this may be common. But in this country it is against the law and despicable behavior. So it is all the more frightening that Palin had neither the common sense nor the moral rectitude to step back from this man. Which simply indicates to me she is quite as capable of conducting terrifying witch hunts in her own right. (And perhaps her abuse of power is just an indication of that).

Politically, I'm a libertarian, I like to bad-mouth both sides. As for religion, I am an agnostic who had to invent a suitable religion in order to participate in a meaningful way with those of faith. I don't want a faith based government and had printed this on tee shirts four years ago. The world will embrace this leader, who in reality, turns out to be the anti-Christ. I doubt if Palin is anything more than an ambitious opportunist, but this is a bit scary.

PTOADSTOOL makes a good point. It isn't just McCain (how old will he look in four years?) and Palin to consider. They both have very questionable recruiting records - what sort of appointments are they likely to make?

Thank you for this clear-eyed look at an important issue that too many people of all political and religious persuasions prefer to shroud with misplaced qualms or avoid altogether. There's no legal or moral excuse for failing to examine very carefully the religious beliefs of a political candidate when we have evidence that those religious beliefs are likely to motivate the candidate's behavior in office - behavior that would affect us.

It is my understanding that Governor Palin's religion promotes political participation as a means of achieving its goals. If that's the case, how can we not talk about those goals, those beliefs, those influences on Palin's potential decisions as a Vice President or President?

Yeah you should be afraid of someone associated with the Pentecostal church being a button away from nukes.Let me enlighten you all I am from Indiana and I am definitely non religious. But through my job I have dealt with a good number of religions, from Amish to Baptist to Buddhist. And a more than generous share of Pentecostals. And let me tell you those chumps are nuts. This is the same religion that an offshoot thinks it's a good Idea to play with rattlesnakes and drink poison! Now is this the rational decision making you want handling our nuclear arms. Let me put this in a personal term my cousin went to this church in high school she had one of these tongue speaking episodes and they all cheered her on a few years later we found out she was schizophrenic get my point I have seen there freak show carnival atmosphere Sunday services and I am telling you be afraid!

I totally agree with the author on the relevancy of Sarah Palin's strange religious beliefs.

The same logic can also be applied when considering Jewish candidates for US political office. The privacy argument is not applicable in these cases because of the existence of the highly mlitarized "Jewish State" in Palestine.

Since the national interests of the USA and the national interests of the Jewish State are not at all congruent, it is fair to question the allegiance of all American Jewish lawmakers.

If there wasn't a colonial enterprize, calling itself "the Jewish State", actively colonizing Palestine, the religion of American Jews would be irrelevant.

Please, don't call me an anti-Semitic bigot because I mentioned these unmentionable facts. I'm an American patriot, not a Holocaust-denying, Arab-loving, terrorist-sympathizer.

Here in St. Paul, we paid pretty close attention to the convention. Palin showed up as a darling at the show, but it didn't take long to Google her background and figure out her extreme beliefs. Whatever I thought about McCain before his VP pick was certainly "updated" afterwards to a conclusion that he does not have the judgement to make the decisions the Presidency will demand. If he dies in office, the weak-minded true believer Palin will never be up to the task or managing the Administrative branch. Perhaps she will appoint her high school buddies to cabinet posts - who knows what goes on in the head of someone like that?

I think Sarah Palin shows McCarthyite tendencies and is shallow and devastatingly unprepared for national office. But she doesn't actually say she thinks the Iraq War is God's Plan; rather she PRAYS that it is, since the US is engaged in it. And that's not as bad; at least she doesn't claim that she KNOWS God's will.

Her belief in "the end days" ought to be asked about, though. Not that anyone gets to ask her anything!

I think it is OBLIGATORY that a candidate hold numerous press conferences and interviews, and failure to do so is reason enough to disqualify a candidate.

palin gets a pass because she's a jesus freak -- in our nation, jesus freaks rule -- americans twice elected george w bush, a jesus freak who's a warmonger & a spendthrift, wasting our hard-earned dollars to bail out wall street thieves -- the washington post was unrestrained in cheering for bush's decision to invade iraq, which thus immediately came under the rule of iran -- the washington post thinks the surge worked, when all it did was to strengthen iran's hand -- considering how irrational the editors of the post are, do you really expect editors of other publications to allow anything bad about palin's religiosity to appear?

SHE IS NOT THAT RELIGIOUS. It appears as if she took that position based on what she thought would benefit her at that moment. Would a trully faithful christian engage in having an extramarital affair, engage in political corruption, make herself so unavailable to her children leading them to make serious mistakes such as unwed pregnancy, make racial comments such as calling Obama "Sambo" from the book "little sambo"? Just last night she was at a bar surrounded by alcoholics watching the second presidential debate! THAT IS NOT A RELIGIOUS PERSON, SHE IS JUST AN OPORTUNISTIC POLITICIAN.
