Good Believers Make the Best Case

Q:What makes the best 'case for God' to a skeptic or non-believer, an open-minded seeker, and to a person of faith and Why?

1) The message of scripture?
2) The scientific evidence for an Intelligent Designer?
3) The 'words' that God has 'spoken' - Torah, Jesus, the Qur'an?
4) A compassionate lifestyle?
5) Personal, subjective experience?

-- Karen Armstrong

I don't think you can persuade anyone to believe in God who does not feel some need for God. At some level of his or her being, a person has to feel there is something higher and better out there and want to be part of it. The question is: What can help a person yield to this desire in the face of so much skepticism and the scientistic demand for concrete proof? How can people overcome the fear that they are giving way to childish impulses instead of sticking with hard-headed reality?

I personally think a strong, good life built around faith in God is the best evidence. The example of a person-or a population of people-who act on their faith is the best kind of proof. Such people are not an argument for an unseen reality but they are evidence of God working.

Good believers show that you can live a better life with God than without. That kind of assurance may embolden the uncertain to take a chance and believe what they want to believe.

Professor Bushman said: "I don't think you can persuade anyone to believe in God who does not feel some need for God." He is probably right; however, if he assumes that feeling "some need for God" is any kind of proof that there is a God, then Bushman is wrong.

Bushman also said; "I personally think a strong, good life built around faith in God is the best evidence. The example of a person-or a population of people-who act on their faith is the best kind of proof. Such people are not an argument for an unseen reality but they are evidence of God working."

Now it is perfectly alright for him to begin by saying "I personally believe..." for we are free to believe anything we want to believe, but the rest of the paragraph leaves us in the dark as to what kind of faith and in what kind of God he has in mind (Catholic, Hindu, Ilsamic, or whatever?) Perhaps Bushman thinks any kind of faith is "proof" if it includes some kind of God.

He argues that "a strong, good life built around faith in God is the best proof", but such life is actually proof of nothing except that some person or group is living a strong, good life. In fact, many people live strong, good lives without any kind of faith in a God or a feeling of "need for God." So does that prove that there is no God. Of course not.

There is no proof that God exists or does not exist. I am very surprised that the eminent professor does not know that.

Yes example is the best teacher.Chrisitanity flourished despite awful persecutions that waxed and waned under the different Roman Emperors.
What kept this underground Church alive and attracted new believers despite the "danger" to life and property? It was the love these early Christians had for one another.
