Healing Through Responsible Faith
This election was an important step in American history, and its future, for many reasons. It clearly shows that steps have been made in bringing about healing the rift between people of different backgrounds. It shows that the young do have a voice, and for the first time, felt compelled to say something with their vote. Now, it needs to continue throughout the next four years in how we reach out to our state and federal representatives. You don't just vote because you hate how things have been - you have to vote for something.
For too long we have all been politically complacent while decisions about our foreign policy and our country's economic future were made for us with disregard for the long term consequences; and now, we are fighting off a deep recession, and reestablishing trust in the international community. This election sends a clear message that the majority of this country is concerned about those things, and open to an alternate view and approach.
As part of the church, we are called to be part of that voice that continues to press for adherence to natural law, the common good, and promoting the dignity of every human person. This mandate does not depend on legislation; in fact, it goes out ahead of it, influencing people in the heart, then the home, then into the halls of congress. Hopefully, in four years, what the world will see is an America full of people of diverse backgrounds and cultures and faiths, yet unified in our common purpose of freedom, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.
They will see our faith reflected in sound economic policy, a strong foreign voice for democracy, and equality among all peoples. We must continue to embrace our faith and safeguard its public expression, not water it down.

Did you perhaps mean "life" instead of "freedom," since liberty means the same as freedom?

If every Catholic is well informed on abortion issues, and every provision is made to ensure that no Catholic resorts to abortion, then a quarter of the US population has been taken care of. That is a really good start.
