The Best 'Case for God'

What makes the best 'case for God' to a skeptic or non-believer, an open-minded seeker, and to a person of faith and why?
1) The message of scripture?
2) The scientific evidence of an Intelligent Designer
3) The 'words' that God has 'spoken' - Torah, Jesus, the Qur'an?
4) A compassionate lifestyle?
5) Personal, subjective experience?

None of the above!

If I had to pick one of your five it would be Number 4 - A compassionate lifestyle, but alone that would be positive, but limited. Mother Theresa attracted much attention, but a dedicated humanist could do much the same, so could a Gandhi, a Nelson Mandela.

What I believe attracts the skeptic is a willingness on the part of religious people to wrestle with truth and to follow it no matter where it leads. Scripture is taken seriously as part of the human yearning for God, but if literalized it repels more than it attracts.

The motto of my seminary was "Seek the truth come when it may, cost what it will." Christian education is not the same as Christian propaganda. It is a shame that so many Christian leaders to dot recognize the difference.

Spong: There is no God, there is no heaven and there is no afterlife. At least, not in the way we have traditionally thought of such things. (See http://tinyurl.com/yg6aqcy )

Spong states that "My audience is not the people who go to church on Sunday morning"

Oh really. And to what purpose? To bring them into the Church family? Is there any evidence that Spong is doing that rather than driving people away?

That he continues to run around in a purple shirt shows the extremely depraved state of the Episcopal denomination.

Grace, Navin1, grace, grace to Rev. Halibuton, grace to Fr. BP, grace that allows the slaughter of Iraqis and Afghans. Grace that allows and has allowed them to rape and pillage the earth. Grace, Navin1, cheap grace.

Navin1, Christians are "God's people," you forget. There religion is absolutely free of ideology. Sure, they cut off the thumbs of Hindus, hands of Hindus and Muslims, tied them around their necks. That's the past. Sure they slaughtered millions of Jews, sell us out for St. Oil of the ME, not a problem. They've got grace. They will repent before they die, and get grace (cheap). So, if they ignore Darfur, if they embrace China, what the hey...grace, my friend grace (cheap).

I join the author's lament. Too bad more christians don't realize that they are not seeking the truth while reading a book. Too bad that more muslims don't realize that they are not seeking the truth while reading a book. Too bad for all the other religions they wiped out in history and will wipe out in the future. Perhaps some day, the author will realize that the reason is not a failing in his teaching but the teaching of that book composed by the history of a bigoted power hungry church in the name of a mythical greek tragedy hero.

I lament, perhaps some with the author, but more with those that suffer the teaching of the christians (Africa, Latin America, Europe, America...), but does he really seek truth to the denial of his chosen ignorance?

counterww,

You are welcome to Jesus. I'm not a big fan of Hitchens, as I mentioned, but I am fond of the truth. What I'd hear previously about Mother Theresa from persons who knew her did not instill confidence.

What Hitchens wrote in "Mommie Dearest" is fact. Someone, somewhere, is reported to have said, "The truth shall set you free."

Ponder that.

Farnaz, I have read enough of the ilk of Hitchens, and the other popular radical atheists out there. They are hateful, spiteful men that hold elitist viewpoints , much like you. I have read enough of your posts to know that. It is a common theme among atheistic thinkers. To not be able to think outside the box that something created the box is deficient thinking.

Nothing you can say will point me away from my faith in Jesus Christ. He is the key to happiness and to completion in this life and the next.

Hitchens has evidence?

Easily confirmed. Read the book.

SPong's "god" is something he has made up in own mind due his lack of understanding of the truth of the gospel. He trys to represent Christianity and change it into something it is not.

Hitchens on the other hand is just a elitist hateful person that attempts to simplify mankind's issues down to blaming religion etc.

BOTH of them are far from the truth. One hides it in a cloak of tolerance and liberal thinking, and the other would not know truth if it has hit him in the face. Problem is, it has. Jesus and Paul were right about what our relationship with God takes, but both of these men won't let their egos down enough to allow that. Hitchens has evidence? Horse*****

Speaking of truth-seeking, see Christopher Hitchens, "Mommie Dearest," on Mother Theresa. I've never been a fan of Hitchens, but all his assertions are backed by evidence, evidence that has been confirmed. I should add that much of what he writes has been known in various circles for a long, long time.

OK. Spong's "leadership" as bishop of Newark resulted in a near 50% decline in membership. And he thinks people should listen to his opinions on "evangelization"? (Of course, Spong would hate the use of the word evangelize in any context associated with him.) Wow. What arrogance.

His god is a distant, cold abstraction who is too indifferent or impotent to intervene in our little lives. It is thus hardly surprising that people aren't signing up for Spong's religion, which certainly isn't Christianity. When will Spong have the integrity to resign?
