And we know it's never going to happen - the Church is a 2000 year-old Theocratic Patriarchy. Let's be honest here. Sure, women are allowed in the pulpit these days, but still no Roman collar!

And the sacraments are still a man's job.....

How is it that Roman Catholics here feel free to attack Bishop Spong when you've got all these issues, and much more besides, to deal with?

Many times I have heard from the pulpit how some Christian's like to pick some scriptures here and there to live by. You know, like Home Town Buffet. Putting yourself out there with a hodgepodge answer leaves some of us wishing you would just keep it to yourself. There is a question I have thought about during this run for the White House, what candidate would be able to stand up to the "Churches" qualifications according to Timothy 3:1-13. It may seem that John Shelby Spong is ignorant of Genesis Chapter One Verse Five. The Verse says "God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. So the evening and the morning were the first day." Spong asks in his post "Is God male?" The Genesis verse is clear. Spong also claims that many parts of Christianity are "irelevant." Christianity is based on faith in the Son of Man as Savior and in affirming, sustaining, and keeping the commands of the Son of Man. The Bible, the true and inspired Word of Yod Yahweh Jehovah says in Second Timothy Chapter Three Verses Sixteen and Seventeen that "All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work." It is clear that Yod Yahweh Jehovah intended His Divine Will to be communicated through His Word. His Word is the Holy Scriptures which are the antecedent of faithful Christian living. Each Scripture and each Christian action has value and is therefore not irrelevant. The Bible is clear that Jesus Christ chose men to be the Twelve Apostles. Women also believed in Jesus Christ and in their belief in Him obtained salvation from Him. When Pope John Paul II said that Jesus Christ chose men to be His disciples, it is clear through criteria of the Verse of the Holy Bible in Mark Three Fourteen and Fifteen which says "Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him and that He might send them out to preach and to have power to heal sickness and to cast out demons..." that Jesus Christ intended the first Twelve disciples to be men. Also, Spong calls the commands of the Bible which call for gays to be deserving of death an "evil" when it is clear that the Verse says that all those who practice such things are deserving of death (Romans 1:32). The true evil is the gay act itself. Spong, if he can read, should. The Bible is clear. Believers do not, if they are strong, have a fear of being different but rather an affirmation of faith. Believers can reveal their characters, principles, and values, and do not need to hide. Fear is a Satanic construct when not about the notion of survival fear. The Bible says in Verse Eighteen of First John, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love." In Verse Eight of First John the Holy Bible says "He who does not love does not know God, for God is love." A strong believer does not need to fear or hide as is the inference of Spong's asinine assertion. Absent of reason, Spong's effort is disavowed. The Bible is clear.

Throw in a little Romans and Genesis and that says about all regading behavoir. It is not easy being Catholic. A person can always be a Protestant. People like Pelosi, Kennedy, and Kerry profess to be only for the status but aren't practicing Catholics.

Where did Pope John Paul II say "Jesus did not choose any women to be his disciples?" You seem to be responding to something he never said.

Your comment about European ethnic groups seems to be irrelevant, as well. If Jesus had been part of a distinctly Italian religious tradition from ancient times, he might have chosen only Italians among the twelve. In fact, since the number 12 has a distinct meaning within the context of the religion of ancient Israel, he probably would have chosen a different number of "apostles" if he had not been part of that tradition.

What Christian texts support the institution of slavery? I'm aware that St. Paul's letter to Philemon does not directly challenge his right to own Onesimus. As I'm sure you know, St. Paul also refers to Onesimus as his "child" in the same letter.

Are there texts that you regard as literally supporting the idea that God made women to be the slaves of their husbands? I'm not aware of any.

It is true that Lev. 20:13 imposes a death penalty for homosexual sin. The penalty was clearly culturally conditioned. The issue of the sin, however, was not, just as the claim regarding the sin of adultery in Lev. 20:10 is not culturally conditioned, though the penalty of death is. Both of these texts relate to sinful behavior. I think it's unfair to regard the obvious interpretation of such texts as either literalist or unjust. You may not like what it says. You may not regard it as divinely inspired truth, but if it is divinely inspired, on what grounds do you attack the text or its interpretation?

I regard the charge of "uninformed sexism" as culturally conditioned. The notion that gender does not matter even in marriage and parenting is largely a post-modern innovation that has never struck me as being particularly enlightened or informed.

Thank you for your response. Through it's approx. 2000 year history, the Catholic Church, or the men who ruled the church have used and abused very worldly power. Any institution run by humans in this realm of time and material is only as well devoted to "passing on the knowledge of Christ and helping people get to heaven" as are the people who run the organization, and in all cases those people are subject to temptation and possible error and corruption. I was speaking figuratively about "voting" for cardinals and priests. In the end they are all selected by men. The and priests are not ordained unless someone agrees that they are ready, and that person is always male.

However, the real issue isn't the details of the passing on of privelege (to perform sacraments) and power (to decide what the church will teach and who will teach it). The fundamental issue is the ongoing choice to honor highly flawed, patriarchally-based interpretations of the early Christian writings rather than to honor the gender-equal capacity that women have to lead wisely, to pass on the knowledge of Christ and to help people get to heaven." By sticking to a tradition of male privelege the church puts obstacles in the way of the possible spiritual development of both women and men and loses the benefit of full participation by half ot he population.

The four women doctors of the church had to fight a patriarchal system, often having to go outside the protocols, structure and teachings of the church to accomplish what they did. Imagine how much more widely they could have spread their spiritual message in their time if they had actually been supported by the church in their endeavors. And, four out of thirty does not sound like the highest engagement and effectiveness of half of he population.

It strikes me that what the church suffers from on this issue is probably not so much deliberate sexism or discrimination as it is a long-standing failure of the imagination. Unable to imagine a Church that supports both genders equally in full spiritual flourishing, the leaders are willing to live with a disabling status quo, much as they chose to live with the corrupting and paralyzing effects of the sexual abuse syndrome. How much better it would have been for the Church and its mission to have welcomed and encouraged responsibility and transparency on that issue.
Similarly, the teachings of Christ could be better spread by a healed and whole church.

It is not a democracy. People don't get to vote for who is a priest or a Cardinal. The priests are ordained after a through 6-8 year training and vetting process. Cardinals are picked by the pope. when the Pope dies, the remaining Cardinals under age 80 get together and vote on who replaces him. What power do you really think the Church has on earth? It has moral authority, yes, and based on that, the power to persuade, but it has no physical power over any state. And many women have significant roles in the church, starting at the parish level and extending to examples like Blessed Mother Teresa, who influence even the secular world. As for influencing how Catholics percieve God and work toward their own salvation, there are women like Therese of Lisieux, Teresa of Avila and Catherine of Siena, who are numberd among the 30 doctors of the church that have had the most influence in defining that. And they did that without being priests.

More nonsense from Mr Spong. Even a person with half a brain knows John Paul II was referring to the twelve Apostles, who were all male, not the general disciples of Jesus who were obviously men and women. It's also a worry that Mr Spong thinks the difference between male and female is no more significant than ethic differences between two men.

Christianity's critics reveal an appalling ignorance of history. After the first six words that comment lurches into ludicrous fantasy.

Reasonable people can disagree about the interplay between context, purpose, and subsequent application of Scriptural teaching on women in the church. But we look to Scripture, not what passes for thinking among the thoroughly modern. The calling of the church is to live up to eternal truth, not to keep up with the times.

Spong, as is his wont, completely misunderstands and misrepresents the teaching of the Catholic Church and the hermeneutics of conservative Evangelicals, some of whom have enjoyed strong leadership from women in church roles long before Liberal denominational leaders left sound doctrine to wander through postmodern deserts. Unlike him, we can actually read with an appreciation for context, historical circumstances, grammatical and syntactical clues to develop a nuanced and accurate understanding of what Scripture actually "supports", "suggests" and "calls for" and not what his tired old cherry-picked, uninformed rants pretend it says.

I like how someone of Spong's caliber can make so many unqualified statements about what we conservative evangelical Christians believe concerning the Scriptures.

I am Wiccan, a High Priestess of a "congregation" and tradition. I have a High Priest that aids me in this ministering of our people. We believe that males as well as females have strengths that are needed to form a complete whole. I am the High Priestess and as such the "leader" but I acknowledge that my Male counterpart is neccessary in the leadership, as he would say I am.

In my tradition's theaology, we have Goddess which is the spark of life, but the God is the flame. All things come from the womb/Goddess...but there must be a will/God to survive. They are One.

To say that the God/creator is Male only is like a bird flying with one wing. If we are made in the image of God, then that God is more then Male...and more then our minds can comprehend. We write it God/dess.

This is a thoroughly unfounded and false position. To suggest that the exclusion of women from the priesthood is ok because "no role is better or worse than the other . . ." is either naive or disingenuous. How many women get to vote in the selection of the pope, or in the selection of Cardinals, or on who is ordained as a priest? Women are excluded from power by their exclusion from the priesthood, and therefore from key decisions about interpretation and practice of God's teachings, dogma, etc. Any defense of that status quo should at least be forthright about the realities of the exercise of power: who wins, who loses.

I would like to make a clarification. You suggested in your article that the Catholic Church allows only males to become priests because they believe only males could be Jesus' disciples. Catholics do however acknowledge female disciples. The true rationale can actually be found in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. In section 1577 the point is made that the Twelve apostles were all male - therefore they reason that priests must be male as well. This is why they call themselves an "Apostolic Church" - it is based on the Apostles. Just thought you might appreciate the correction.

Religion is a creation of man therefore it is flawed. If you need to believe in a God or a supreme higher being your belief does not require any religion. You can pray on your own, you can worship on your own and you can help others on your own.

Thank you, Bishop Spong. The blatant sexism in the Catholic Church is the main reason that I left it and became a Wiccan. We worship the Divine as both male and female. I've noticed that a few more liberal Protestant denominations are expanding the idea of "God" to include both male and female. This is a movement that's come about because of women ministers and bishops.

The early Christian Church was spread primarily by women, because it preached equality and abstinence from sex. In the Roman Empire, upper-class women were pretty much baby machines to crank out more Roman citizens. The Christians preached that women and men were equal in the eyes of God, and sex was unholy. The women liked that idea, so it caught on. Many of the early evangelists, including Saint Paul, had women accompanying them.

According to the Ageless Wisdom Teachings, which are the scientific and philosophical underpinnings of all religions, it is the polarity of the sexes which has so far determined that priests are to be male. Energetically (in electrical terms), males are positive, females are negative. When God's blessings are to be given to the faithful in a church service, the energy comes from on high to the
male clergyman or priest, and is then distributed to the participants.

In this new age, now dawning, the plan is to bring the male and female polarities into balance, thus allowing women to become fully equal to men.
