It should be noted that at one time the Catholic Church actually discouraged its parishoners from reading the Bible on their own. In fact, men like William Tyndale were executed for translating the Bible into the venacular of its time. Then two things changed that: the protestant Reformation and the Gutenberg Bible, which made printing Bibles more accessible to all people.

I agree that Scripture should be studied both as an individual and in community. It is important however to make sure your community is dividing the Scripture the right way. As Mr. Wallis mentioned, the Bible has been used to justify acts such as slavery and oppression of women, while others use the Bible to do the opposite.

If you go to a church, it would be a good idea to see what they actually teach and believe when it comes to Scripture. Most churches will give a statement of beliefs or creed and make it accessible to potential visitors and members.

One request: we've gotten the Jewish/Christian point of view on this issue. How do Muslims feel about this? Do they approach the Quran in the same manner as the Judeo/Christian Bible?
