Save the Earth for God's Sake
"Look out the window," I tell my students each fall in my Women's Spirituality class. "See that beautiful tree? If you believed that God was immanent in the world, if the world was God's body, would it give you pause about chopping it down? Would you think twice about tearing at the grass when you are bored, if you believed that somehow with that tiny act, you were tearing at the fabric of the divine?”
This idea grabs my students. It makes them wonder if when they wander back to their residence halls or the cafeteria after class, that they might be walking through a world filled with God. That maybe even their world, the natural world is God.
We address these questions during our discussion about the many types of justice that concern contemporary feminist theologians—not the least of which is concern for the environment.
But feminist theologians are far from alone in the effort to draw a whole host of environmental issues, including global warming, into a conversation about the moral imperatives that come with being a Christian and taking care of God’s creation.
Led by scholars like Sallie McFague (who wrote the aptly titled, Super, Natural Christians: How We Should Love Nature), Douglas Burton-Christie (who has given countless talks and written many articles on the subject), and John Haught (author of God After Darwin), an entire subset of Christian theology—Ecotheology and Ecospirituality—has developed, pushing the notion that God is not simply transcendent but most importantly of all, immanent, and that to see the divine as wholly apart from creation hinders our ethical impulse to care for the world.
Eco-Christian thinkers are devoted to taking a stand not just on saving the earth for the earth’s sake, or even our sake, but saving the earth for God’s sake.
If you understood God as immanent—incarnate in the world—would it change how you live, use, and destroy the earth’s resources?

Do YOU have any ideas of your own or are you just the type of person who bashes and criticizes the ideas of others? Have some respect!

You're so damn dumb I don't know how you got where you did. Do you have any core beliefs or do you just pick and choose. And being a "feminist" theologian is so retro! I mean really - did you channel back about thirty years?

VERITAS VOS LIBERABIT,
First, VVL, you do realize that you're behind the times, an atavism? Your (I assume) Roman Church abandoned Latin in favor of English over 40 years ago. Please, name yourself in the vernacular ("The Truth Will Set You Free") - it's a little long to fit on a credit card, though, don't you think?
A nice name but I'm afraid that what you wrote isn't really the truth.
You suggest that Donna Freitas is committing the grave sin (according to St.Paul - but who believes what that Roman double-agent said about anything?) of worshipping the creation rather the Creator.
I read Donna as saying that the creation is so closely identified with the Creator that hurting the creation also hurts the Creator. I'm sure that Donna worships the Creator in his own right.
Consider quantum physics: nothing is really separate from anything else - everything is entangled and intertwined.
Consider Jesus: Depending on which theologian you consulted, you could say, apart from trinitarian niceties, ("of one substance with the father, begotten not made") that Jesus was separate from The Godhead. Thus, when Jesus was crucified, the Creator God was also hurt.
So, when you hurt the natural environment, you're hurting God, just as when you destroy a guy's toy, you're hurting the guy.
Why do you have a problem with God's being immanemt in the world? Makes more sense to me than the Second Coming's being imminent.

I think it's a wonderful spiritual-philosophy that I agree on, with my Agnostic-Pantheist-Buddhist-Christian type mind, that nature itself is possibly the manifestation of the "divine" itself, the spiritual dimension/realm of reality that many of us feel must exist!
P.S.-I agree with the first guy, You ARE a cutie!

A rough and ready, your mileage may vary, survey of this blog gives the following assessment: 4 comments that are on the environment or the question posed by the essay, 5 comments that are on anti religious bigotry, 1 direct comment answering anti religion bigotry, 8 comments that are mostly irrelevant rants. We need to save the Earth for Man's Sake. God does not need help. The Man Gods in the Bible that looked like us, and we are in their image are our High Tech Ancestors (HTA) Humans that Colonized Earth with Pure-bred Humans is not God. They Colonized Earth with a Balanced Eco System, and reproduced by High Tech Science Pure-bred Genetic Humans called Adam and Eve. When Adam made Eve 'fell' Eve became pregnant, and they reproduced the first child born on Earth by Body Birth. Cain became a Killer because of Mis-bred Genetics, and Humans have been born in Original Sin ever since.
Man was supposed to be the Caretaker Pure-bred Species, but after Body Birth, our HTA removed their High Tech Lab in the Garden of Eden, and the Fallen Humans, lost their High Tech Science. We know the history of Fallen Crew on Spaceship Earth. Humans were supposed to be the Caretakers of Life not the Killers.
We are up to the End Times and can see how we have polluted our Eco System, and polluted our planet with our waste and nuclear waste, that is killing our Ozone Canopy that protects us from the ultra-violet rays of the Sun. When it is gone Life as we know it cannot continue.
We have our Earth Home covered with Nuclear bombs that will cause the Last Days 'Arm'ageddon. Our HTA will rescue/Rapture us before the planet cannot support Human Life. They will 'regenerate' those left, and take them to a New Planet they are Colonizing like they did Earth 'in the beginning'. The Saved should be able to resist Body Birth on the new planet and have the Eternal Pure-bred Physical Life, promised by religion for Life After Death.
With our High Tech Science, this sould be understandable. the Bible is the Code Book for Life from the Creation/Colonization to the High Tech Science reproduction to the End Times nuclear bombs, and breaking of the Ozone Canopy.
Man should be the Caretaker Crew on their Spaceship Earth Home, not the Killer, a result of Body Birth reproduction, that makes all the Mis-bred Bodies, Disease, Divisions and Physical Death. There is Eternal Pure-bred Physical Life After Birth on Pure-bred Spaceship Planets and in spaceships.
Life is for the Living not the Dead.

"If I can see and you cannot, must that be deemed as my flaw and not yours?"
Yes, if what you claim to see is, BY YOUR OWN DEFINITION, non-existent.
If you attempt to define something and you define it as non-existing, you cannot then claim its existence based on the assertion that "nondefinability" is a characteristic of the thing you try to define.
Claiming special dispensation from the rules of logic on the basis of being "a believer" may keep the but-naked emperor happy but the rest of us require a little more evidence.

Glen, Veritos, etc, all others who think God does not care about all s/he created:
You guys must not be artists (= creationists).
If you were, you'd know in your soul that whatever you create, has a part of your spirit within it. Ever write a story, a song, or paint a picture?
If God created the universe and all things within it, that means a part of God is within all those things. And because they all are works of God and have the signature of God within them, they should be treated with respect.

Get used to it. The human species, at least the male part, is doomed to extinction. As proven by decreased sperm counts in males and increased size of the clitoris in women.
A lizard recently was found to have reproduced without male intervention. Mother Mary did so 2000 years ago. Barnicles do it everyday.
Men, enjoy while it lasts.

Dear Donna,
God is not the creation. God is eternal trees die. Trees and all things depend on God. How can you teach this in an educational institution? What you posit is foolishness.
“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse. For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles.
Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen” (Romans 1:18-25).
You are advocating worshipping the creation this passage of Holy Scripture says that what you are saying is a lie. I will take God’s word over yours.
In Jesus Love,
Veritos

Dear Donna, I think you have written a well thought essay, and you ask a very good question. As a former atheist who, like C.S. Lewis, found that atheism did not hold up on close examination, I have returned to a faith. I presently hold two axioms as my Articles of Faith. First: In The Beginning God Created the Heavens and the Earth. Second: God did this to make an abode for life. I derive from these that we do the work of God, in whatever small way, when we make the Earth a better abode for life; contra wise when we strip the Land and Seas of Life, and poison the Air, we work against God and against ourselves. What we do to the web of life that God has allowed to flourish on earth we also do unto ourselves. Did this change my views of how to live, use, and destroy the earth's recourses? You bet it did. Thank you for the essay. For my former fellows, the Atheists, I challenge you to write the axioms of your system of thought and examine them honestly. After all the Apostle of Reason, pointed out: The unexamined life is not worth living.

I am very disappointed with some of the responses I am reading here.
A few get it, but a significant enough number don't, so just to be perfectly clear: If we continue on in the way we are, we will be instrumental in bringing about the next die-off. If on the other hand we take environmental stewardship seriously and make some fundamental changes in how we live and interact with the earth, we may stop the Titanic before it hits the iceberg.
Personally, I would hate for my generation to be looked back from future generations as those greedy bloody @ssholes who ruined the planet.

Ummm... Glen, And where is heaven supposed to be? Try for a moment looking in that direction...
Did you glance up? Ah, thought so. You have inherited the mental baggage of a desert tribe, its worldview, mythology and cosmology. Heaven is supposed to be "up there somewhere." Pretty primitive, iron-age primitive. Why not down, or sideways, or right here in another dimension? Up there in the sky? That's Mars and Jupiter in the sky, Glen, and farther on, it's Orion the Hunter and Sirius the dog star.
Donna Freitas is saying that Creation, the natural world, should be treasured because it is the direct expression of the Almighty. Treasured, not trashed. God did not make the Universe for man to lay waste to. Cherish what we have of the natural world, and pass it on to your children.
Building a cathedral, synogogue, or mosque, for purposes of worship, is silly. If you want to worship the Almighty, take a walk in the woods. Find awe in a blossom and the flight of a hummingbird. Be astounded at the expanse of the Milky Way galaxy on a crystal clear night. Above all, get out of your petty little egocentric world and visit God's world. Appreciate.
And live in the 21st century. Enough of the desert tribe and its worldview.

Jesus said that God is in heaven and that He came into the world to save us. I think most theologians are familiar with the prayer, "Our father who is in heaven, hollowed by thy name ..." It does not say our father who is in the earth. Jesus said that he returned to His father in heaven. So Jesus is not on this earth either. Jesus sent the Holy Spirit to this earth and where does he live? He does not live in the grass but he lives in those who surrender their lives to Christ. So go out and cut your grass and chop down your tress because this does not in the least bit inflict any wounds on God. But when you abuse your body, soul and your mind then you abuse the temple where God through the Holy Spirit has decided to dwell and this wounds God.

You DO realize OVERpopulation is our biggest threat to the environment, and Religion has been a major force in opposing planned parenthood and humane population control.
But of course, I should be happy you at least acknowledge destroying our planet is bad -- unlike some conservative religious groups who rejoice in the delusion that our destruction of the environment will accelerate the Rapture/Apocalypse.
Superstition caused by CONSERVATIVE religious groups IS a major problem for the world. I like you -- but how are you going to counter that???

If I understood God as immanent or incarnate in the world, he'd have a whole lot of explaining to do regarding that horrible tsunami and hurricane Katrina, just to name the most recent batch of natural catastrophes.
I'm with Pat....we don't need to conjure gods or devils or fairies or leprechauns to find a reason to save our environment.
Our children are part of the REAL world, they are the ACTUAL future of our species, and they are all the motivation we should need.

99.9% of all creatures that have ever existed on this planet are now extinct. Man has had a hand in about 0.00000000001% of these extinctions. The rest died because of climate change (not the supposed "man-made" kind but the kind that occurs over the natural ebb and flow of the Earth’s climates… ie: three separate ice ages), inability to cope, or extinction events.
This immanent god that you speak of ought to do a better job of hanging onto these species if each and all are so very special.

Julie Annie, I hope yellow jackets aren't an endangered species like rats and flies. Of course "them dawgs" do their best to make them stink at least once a year. Them dawgs find out what you know is so occassionally, yellow jackets give a nasty sting when they get riled up.

Why would I? Why would YOU? What is your theological basis for creating such a conception?
Perhaps your position is that God is timeless, omnipresent, omniscient, without beginning, without end, yada, yada, yada... basically spread about as thinly as possible throughout the full range of human perception/conception so as to avoid any possible danger of ever being pinned down by rational thought.
Does it not trouble you that something so conceived is indistinguishable from nothing?

True Story:
I disturbed a nest of yellow jackets(wasps) while
mowing the grass last summer and OUCH! got stung.
I tried spraying the little hole where they swarmed with insecticide every morning for a week but it had no effect.
Then I remembered the old Carolina trick: I poured
two quarts of automatic transmission fluid down the hole. KABOOM! NO MORE YELLOW JACKETS!
THANK YOU GOD FOR INVENTING THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION!

The doo-doo is deep and we have a lot of work to do.
Our excess endangers the delicate balance and if pushed too far, through global warming and species extinctions, we may inadvertently initiate changes which have far more drastic affects than we can conceive of.
That may sound alarmist, but consider the entire eco-system as a very robust interconnected whole, like a brick wall where each species is like a brick. We can remove bricks, perhaps even a great many of them and the stability of the wall may not be seriously compromised. But there comes a point where too many bricks have been removed and the wall's stability is lost. Remove a few more bricks and the wall collapses.
Failure to change our behaviours, to become good stewards of the earth will be repaid with consequences we cannot even begin to comprehend. It is not discretionary, we have to change our behaviours NOW!

Gophers dig holes, birds build nests, beavers dam streams and people build houses. When it comes to our own comforts we're just animals and rightly so. No animal that did not do what it's instincts dictate would not survive.
Is global warming a problem? If it is and it's man's fault then man must not be following manly instincts but rather man must have substituted rules that violate the actual nature of man. If there's global warming, it's a threat to our survival and it's our fault then we must be perverts that do not follow the dictates of nature and Nature's God.
Man, the animal with a brain. And a soul, some kind of spirit thing? If so then it must be a Devil for God would not violate her own nature.

Not knowing what your spirit is makes me shiver that I am among apes not Humans. Thinking life after death is not by record and is flesh makes me shiver for only a very few ever get such an offer and God never offered it to mankind! The spirit just like the spirit of Jesus himself lives by print to mind and was even told to you that you must die! You still make we of God liars to fit ape wants!
You still use money so you still are apes that live not in the church and reject Jesus and His Peter as liars so you can follow the beast ways!
You rejected God himself when you refused to learn how to build the church! You pray but know not what you say! Lead us not into temptation means exactly what it is that you hate to obey so much and give up all your evil gatherings of tolls and devices that you do not use and so prevent others from using by your claims to own them! You serve not God but your own vanities like apes do!
You live like apes in all kinds of apes configurations but not in the way of God given to you!
Not by his name written
Not by the example of all the stars and plants of the Universe, not by the rings of trees and not by the example of God on Earth or Jesus or the teachings of Peter in ACTS chapter 4 and 5... you chose to hate God and claim his life after death that is ONLY FOR THEY THAT FOLLOW JESUS THAT NONE OF YOU BUT MANY CLAIM SO!
You must give up all things and pick up the tool of the day and serve God as an individual for your father is not your father and your mother is not your mother for all fathers are fathers and all mothers are motheres so all shall be exactly the same in speaking and teaching so you know not who is who but all be good and father and mother!
You shall treat each child as God keeping all things from them but the most basic education done perfectly by plenty of mothers and care givers EACH! Forget one single child and it is that child I shall judge you all by! APES OF NO HEART OF NO LOGIC AND NOT EVEN A COMMUNITY... YOU ARE THE SCUM THAT GOD FIGHTS NOT HIS OWN FAMILY AS OFFERED AND REJECTED BY YOU EACH AS INDIVIDUALS!
Build the city and place your children inside of it for you shall be the sacrifice and your children be the sealed!

older ones (Healthy)
Visitors

the last seal is not for mankind but for all life and is called the "seal of the wild".
Let they that be sealed up live side by side, and move from house to house in the seals to fit age and function or the correct city for the individual to be part of.
THE CHILD IS MINE SAYETH THE LORD, NOT YOURS! YOU BUT GIVE BIRTH TO MINE AND ALSO ARE MINE YOURSELVES! GIVE THEM PARADISE SEALED UP AND KEPT. gIVE THEM ONLY THE BEST OF PURE TEACHINGS AND LEAVE THE RELIGIONS OUT FOR YOU KNOW NOT ALL THE TRUTH AND SO SHALL NO MORE LIE TO YOUR CHILDREN YOUR APE LIMITS OF UNDERSTANDING! KEEP THE CORRUPTION AWAY BY THE SEALS AND NEVER LET ONE SINGLE VISITOR EVER CROSS THE 5TH SEAL! THE SIXTH SEAL IS FOR THE VISITOR THAT SHALL PASS LEFT OR RIGHT BUT NEVER INWARDS! THE FILTRATION OF GOODS SHALL BE DONE BY THE OLDER ONES AS THE YOUNGER ONE IS THE MORE PROTECTED AND FILTERED THE LIFE IS.
May you know old age and not know the evils all of you absorb just by being in the ways of the beast! The preversions and the joke as well as temptation ways of merchant that are all doomed to pass as traitors all to Humanity for exploiting others in the service that was by community and never in will of God to let merchants ever exist! Money is not in Heacven and it must leave Earth completely! You may never again think sell or buy but make and give as well as recieve from they that also make and give...like blood and like true family of God as all are his children so none is higher than another as equals.
All religions are pissed on by God for being vain selfish and full of lies to make the people sin against him and mock his very essence!
YOU ARE ALL APES THAT KNOW NOT WHAT IT IS TO BE A CHILD OF GOD! SO NONE OF YOUR CLAIMS IN RELIGIONS WILL STAND NOW! YOUR RELIGIONS ARE WASTED EFFORTS OF 1/2 TRUTH AND 1/2 LIES
THE TRUTH IS THAT YOU MIXED MONEY AND APE MINDSETS TO GOD WILL AND GOOFED ALL YOUR RELIGIONS UP IN SILLY APE TALK.
YOU THINK TO BUY AND SELL OR TRADE AND THAT IS THE RESULT OF YOUR BAD TEACHINGS ON TIME! A DOOMED ONE AS YOU ALL CAN SEE YOU MURDER YOUR OWN FUTURE CHILDREN IN SACRIFICE TO THE BEAST!
OOOOH HOW WICKIED YOU ARE AND CLAIM TO BE OF GOD AND OF GOOD STANDING TO THE POINT OF REWARD FIT FOR THE BEST EXAMPLES AS LIFE EVERLASTING... YOU THAT KNOW NOT THAT YOUR SPIRIT IS THE COPY OF THE LIFE YOU LIVED 100% SO THAT ALL YOU ARE IS RECORDED AND REPRESENT YOU FOREVER! YOU CHOSE TO LET THE BEAST CALL YOU ANYTHING IT WANTS AND CLAIM YOUR LIFE TO BE WHAT IT SAY IN RECORDS AS THE REAL YOU IS WASTED AS A LIE ABOUT YOU IS PRESENTED TO THE FUTURE!
yOU HAVE NOT EVEN A CLUE WHO i AM OR WHAT i KNOW OR TELL YOU FOR THE LIES OF YOUR TEACHERS MAKE YOU MORE BEAST THAN OF GOD...
