We aren't born knowing what those words mean, so how do we interpret them?? By trusting that the scholars are translating Him right, and, further back, we are dependent on Matthew, Mark, Luke and John *telling* us what He said. There is no such thing as "just listening to Christ". Every interpretation is dependent on the interpretations of others -- all those scholars through the centuries who made varied translations of the original Greek, which in turn were quotations of Jesus -- or *interpretations* of His words.

This is why so called "literal" interpretations of the Bible are themselves subject to error. We're all dependent on other people's interpretations of what we believe to be Jesus' own words.

I believe we were all created spiritually prior to our physical creation. In this sense we literally have two sets of parents. One divine from our spiritual creation and one set of mortal and imperfect parents. In this sense we are all truly brothers and sisters. The nature of God question is the most important one in the scriptures and in order to have strong faith (the kind which can transform all of your desires to righteous good actions), one must truly understand and get to know their Father in Heaven! God, Christ (Jehovah) and the Holy Spirit all have important roles in our Heavenly Fathers plan for his children. The fact that God calls us His children says that we also have a Heavenly Mother. We don't have a definitive answer as to why She is not directly mentioned in the Bible.

My Catholic childhood was so full of the Saints, male and female, we never worried about what sex God was. I think if I had children, I would continue my family's tradition of calling on different Saints for different matters. For example, Saint Lucy for my eyes, Saint Anthony for success in school. Ms. Freitas, I find it interesting that you think a feminine deity can fit with the Christian tradition. Jesus refers to "God" as "Father" in almost every instance; I doubt this was a mistake on his part. Of course, I think you know this and probably have rebuttals prepared. Academics are good at confusing the issue.

What I am more interested in knowing is why, after thousands of years of women worshiping a deity who identifies himself as masculine, you don't feel like you can identify with God as a man. Sarai, Miriam, Rahab, Naomi, Ruth, Deborah, and Mary seemed to have no problem with God being masculine. My wife, my two mothers, and all four grandmothers have no problem with it either.

Is there something in your life that has caused you to mistrust a male God? Maybe the solution to this is to not redefine God, but to find healing by shaping yourself to him, not the other way around. THAT is much more in keeping with the Judeo-Christian tradition.

What we give our hearts to and have faith in does not follow an external rule book. We are spirit that has taken form in a body. We are unique expressions of a divinity who loves diversity. Do you teach your students that the term "God" did not appear in any equivalent language form in the original scriptures? Do you teach them that the original name was "Yahweh," the ancient Hebrews' version of the mail deity who creates everything, a story that is found in all primitive religions predating Judaism and its "Christian" version by possibly as much as 20,000 years? Do you explain to them that "God" was and remains the early Catholics' substitute for "Yahweh" once the Catholic fraternity (there were no women) became predominantly gentile and wanted to divorce the omnipotent creator from a "Jewish" religion? Do you explain to your students that the only remaining division of so-called "Christianity" which retains in any form the original name "Yahweh" is that of the Seventh Day Adventists, who Anglicised it to "Jehovah"?
If you do not teach your students these basic facts, what do you teach them about "God"?
You might also explain to your students that every one of the billions of times cheap politicians have concluded a claptrap speech with "God bless America," in effect what they have said is "Yahweh bless America."

From my perspective, most of Western religious doctrine seems to devalue the feminine, from defining the divine as male to accusing the female of bringing sin into the world. Feminist writer Judy Mann wrote that the doctrine gives males a false sense of superiority and entitlement. They grow up thinking that they are little gods who can do anything they want to females. This isn't just the Abrahamic religions, as anyone who has read the Pandora myth from ancient Greece would know.

I have two young daughters, and I'm encouraged by Ms. Freitas' exploration of the feminine divine in the Christian tradition and in other religions. My wife and I haven't taught much religion to our girls, except for the Phyllis Root children's book "Big Momma Makes the World." But we don't want to define deity as exclusively feminine, either, because that may end up devaluing the masculine. Does Ms. Freitas have any book recommendations for parents whose children are not yet school age?

What an interesting and cool approach to broadening a child's view of the divine! Great article. Of course, as Prof. Freitas alludes to, introducing kids to the idea of a "Divine-She" can do even more than expand their views of and potential relationships with God. Indeed, if men's self-respect has for centuries been bolstered by the idea of having been created "in God's image," then surely the equally workable idea of a feminine divine might help girls and boys alike grow up treating women with the respect, and even reverence, to which they are entitled.

It's interesting, this struggle over the gender of God. Why would a real God have a gender anyway? Reproduction? 'Tis a puzzle.
