A Prophetic Voice of Hope

Barack Obama continues to elicit responses of profound passion and enthusiasm from many Americans. He evokes hope and inspires people to act. In this sense, whether or not we agree with his particular policies is irrelevant, because surely we must recognize that his person and candidacy represent a much larger phenomenon in American society.

Millions of Americans who have heard Obama speak – in person or on their TV screens – feel a visceral connection with something greater: CHANGE and the hope for a government that can restore the luster of the American Dream.

While only time will tell, Obama seems to truly represent a prophetic voice, perhaps in the vein of Mahatma Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., or John F. Kennedy. Historically, all religious prophets transformed the status quo just at the moment when that status quo no longer represented a healthy or just society. Moses brought the Israelites out of the depths of slavery and misery in Egypt. Jesus awakened an occupied society to radical understandings of love and mercy. Muhammad turned an unjust and religiously negligent Arabian society on its head by setting forth rules for human welfare. Furthermore, each of these prophets inspired hope and aroused people to take action to realize desperately-needed change.

Of course, I’m not saying Barack Obama is a prophet! But he does represent a prophetic voice – uniting people across religion, gender, ethnicity, age, even ideology – calling us back to the American “religion” of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” for ALL Americans.

He definitely sound a good honest Christian with a

vertainly it's frustrating saleem- but the alternative is to let the haters define us-

and there are many who are not filled with hate- read these posts- and draw their own conclusions-

if the quiet observers see that hate is not repaid with hatred- but gentle intelligence and reason- then that is also worth the inor frustrations-

i have always found that the most bellicose are the most loud- but it doesnt mean they represent any but themselves-

Daisy,

I share in the frustration you must feel in writing down your thoughts intelligently only to be responded to by (for the most part) mis-educated people who seem to only be interested in increasing hate, or discussing - with no regard for other human beings - religious beliefs, prophets, etc, with complete and utter disdain.

My thoughts are: why run a blog when most of the people are so blinded by hate and ignorance that they are not even willing to consider another view.

Like Ali said, "Give me 10 scholars and I will defeat them in debate, but give me one who is unaware of his ignorance and he will defeat me."

Dear Daisy,
Thank you for your excellent efforts to keep us posted of what is happening around us.

I agree fully with you that we need a change in our policy. We, Americans, preach of what we do not do ourselves. Our image in the Middle East, Europe, Asia is the lowest at present time.

We need some one like Barack Obama to change the image of our country to the best.

I agree wholeheartidly with you about what you said about Obama. There will be no Peace without Justice especially the war in the Middle East. USA could be a better broker if it intended to solve the coflict in the Middle East between the Israelis and the Palestinian. But, Alas, this is not the case. Obama could be the one, if elected, to solve this complicated problem. Keep the good work, God bless you. (Dawud Assad).

Recognizing a shaper of history amongst us

Thank you for acknowledging the deep and -as you put it- prophetic impact that Barack Obama can have, if the decision makers -voters and party leaders- seize this moment now.

Shapers of history start out as just the person next door. As they display their special characteristics, they encounter both enthusiasm and resistance. This is already happening with Barack Obama.

We are at one of those pivotal moments, where we can seize such a historic opportunity. Where we can put our trust in a leader who can support the citizens of the United States in co-creating the dramatic and positive changes needed for the survival of our global community.

I do hope so.

We are all in a battle to change the rules of engagment away from creating enemies to invigorate our own selves. Its an effort grounded in good faith principles, which are grounded in the religious impulse that we all share.
Obama is just a man, but he is at least, a man of some integrity, who is not trying to exploit our fears. Hope is far more effective than popular actions which lead to detrimental unintended consequences. I personally need the pep talks, especaily from someone who believes in them. I am less interested in how real or practical candidates are. We need morale. We are too overfed and malnourished. Just give me the pep talk. I need a hero.

CANDIDATE OF HOPE

For the first time in our history, we have a candidate who is hoping to represent every American, he is a rare all inclusive candidate. In the California debates, Hillary baited him to respond to that she will be making history as the first "Woman President" as if he is going to pigeon hole himself as "Black President".... my wife and I debated and agreed that he will not fall into the Hillary trap, sure enough, he did not even address her, he simply went on with his appeal to all Americans giving hope.

Rafael in his article rightly points out that "Obama is referred to as a "black" candidate, in truth he is of mixed race, as are many Latinos. And, as the son of an immigrant, his experience can affirm that the American dream is still intact for everyone, regardless of where one's parents were born. His dedication to his family, strong work ethic, opposition to the war in Iraq and deep faith are all qualities that are important to Latino voters." Indeed, he represents the hopes of every American; born, naturalized, white, Black, brown or yellow, Jewish, Christian, Hindu, Muslim or others. Obama has become a powerful icon of pluralism and inclusiveness.

Psychedelic,

The imams and clerics need to hire a PR company because the message is not getting through.

And has been noted many, many times, Islam's problems go beyond its Dark Age laws, the Bin Ladens, the crazies of Iran and the Wannabees of Saudi Arabia. It goes directly to the flaws in basic Islam i.e.

1. Belief in "pretty/ugly wingie thingies".

2. Belief that an hallucinating, illiterate Arab did actually talk to the "pretty Gabriel" in the hot "Gabe" cave and therein received the warmongering and anti-female words and resultant laws now listed in the koran.

3. That Sunnis are superior to Shiites in all aspects of life. And Shiites think the same way about Sunnis.

4. That Islam is perfect and the koran inherently condones no sin even though the 24/7, 800 year-old blood feud between Sunnis and Shiites gives significant credence that greed, hate, suicides, assassinations, maiming, and murder are condoned by the koran. Having multiple wives also gives significant credence to the sins of rape, adultery, lust and polygamy. The condoned treatment of these wives gives credence that the koran allows the sins of hatred, anger and greed.
These are tough issues. Address them, correct them then ask again to be allowed into the civil world!!!!!

And accusing someone of spreading hate and lies does not work when these "someones" are simply listing the facts. If you have counter points about your beliefs then list them. Hiding behind imams and clerics blinded by 1400 years of brainwashing serves no purpose other than to secure a dishonest living for said imams and clerics.

Yes, Barack Obama seems to be doing what you said he is doing. If he delivers on what he said, America could hope to be where it was before Clinton plunged it into the gutter with his endless scandals (it is really funny to see American ladies voting for his wife who seemed to condone his flings) and Bush who single-handedly destroyed any vestiges of faith left in that beautiful country. Only if he can rid himself of the terrible shackles-of-slavery that Israel had locked around the feet of every president of America, the world will so much safer and the Palestinians will at least get to breath the air.

I support your right to idolize a particular candidate. However to describe Obama's campaign rhetoric as prophetic is stretching the truth a bit. He has inspired a lot of people but so did McGovern and John Dean.

After eight years of uninspiring leadership in the Whitehouse, perhaps it is justifiable to throw caution to the wind and latch on to words of hope.

I hope that ASMA would continue to be a beacon of hope for people seeking meaning and purpose through prophetic teachings. It will disappoint many if like the rest of media, it too started to favor one political group over the other.

From a different thread:
~~~BGone:
Speaking of faith:
What are the chances a terror attack like 9-11 only worse is being planned right this minute? And what are the chances that's being done at a real property tax free facility known as a mosque? Furthermore, what are the chances the money needed to do the deed is that unaccounted, tax free and even tax deductible variety, "gifted to God" -put on 'the' plate?
The next president will need to do some minor adjustment in the tax codes. The word tax far surpasses the word God, (even when it's Devil meant) in political debates you know.
It's one thing to be terror attacked using their money. Something a little different when it's money they got from US for oil. And something radically different when the money is a defacto tithe levied on all Americans and foreigners doing business here.
Think about it.~~~~~~~
Muslim, Ayatollahs need to do some heavy duty public denunciation of terror attacks.
You say:
“Furthermore, each of these prophets (meaning Moses, Jesus and Mohammed) inspired hope and aroused people to take action to realize desperately-needed change.”
I am deeply offended that you refer to Jesus as a prophet, and lumping him with such characters as Lot, Saleh , Joseph, Aad and Noah. What is even more offensive is mentioning Mohammed as a prophet, when he himself never assumed the title. He called himself the Messenger of Allah and even that is debatable at most.
I would put it more in the Content of the Anti Christ. Seducing and enticing words as the bible warns us of. Wake up America and come out of the Dream which can be a nightmare if you keep voting the way you do. We tried last time to live a dream and this is the same thing just a different color. Obama makes you feel good however that is all that it is. If you are looking for a good feeling go the Church. If you want this Country to be safe than pick the right person not base on how good you feel. To be real Clinton or McCain would be better choices right now. Huckabee and Obama would make good Vice-Presidents. They are young and still have time to grow-up. I'm a man of Color as well so it not about Color. It about being real on who can make the right decisions for this Country and I believe we are now down to two Clinton or McCain.
For Daisy Only,
In your pursuit of the truth, always note the flaws in the various religions i.e.
1. Abraham founder/father of three major religions was either the embellishment of the lives of three different men or a mythical character as was Moses, the "Tablet-Man" who talked to burning bushes and made much magic in Egypt.
1.5 million Conservative Jews and their rabbis have relegated Abraham to the myth pile along with most if not all the OT. http://www.simpletoremember.com/vitals/ConservativeTorah.htm
2. Jesus, the illiterate Jewish peasant/carpenter possibly suffering from hallucinations, has been characterized anywhere from the Messiah from Nazareth to a mythical character from mythical Nazareth to a mamzer from Nazareth (Professor Bruce Chilton, in his book Rabbi Jesus). Analyses of Jesus’ life by many contemporary NT scholars (e.g. Professors Crossan, Borg and Fredriksen, On Faith panelists) via the NT and related documents have concluded that only about 30% of Jesus' sayings and ways noted in the NT were authentic. The rest being embellishments (e.g. miracles)/hallucinations made/had by the NT authors to impress various Christian, Jewish and Pagan sects.
The 30% of the NT that is "authentic Jesus" like everything in life was borrowed/plagiarized and/or improved from those who came before. In Jesus' case, it was the ways and sayings of the Babylonians, Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Hittites, Canaanites, OT, John the Baptizer and possibly the ways and sayings of traveling Greek Cynics. http://www.earlychristianwritings.com/theories.html
For added "pizzazz", Catholic/Christian theologians divided god the singularity into three persons and invented atonement as an added guilt trip for the "pew people" to go along with this trinity of overseers. By doing so, they made god the padre into god the "filicider".
3. Mohammed, an illiterate, womanizing, lust and greed-driven,warmongering, hallucinating Arab, also had embellishing/hallucinating/plagiarizing scribal biographers who not only added "angels" and flying chariots to the koran but also a militaristic agenda to support the plundering and looting of the lands of non-believers.
This agenda continues as shown by the assassination of Bhutto, the conduct of the seven Muslim doctors in the UK, the 9/11 terrorists, the 24/7 Sunni suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the 24/7 Shiite suicide/roadside/market/mosque bombers, the Islamic bombers of the trains in the UK and Spain, the Bali crazies, the Kenya crazies, the Pakistani “koranics”, the Palestine suicide bombers/rocketeers, the Lebanese nutcases, the Taliban nut jobs, and the Filipino “koranics”.
And who funds these acts of terror? The warmongering, Islamic, Shiite terror and torture theocracy of Iran aka the Third Axis of Evil and also the Sunni "Wannabees" of Saudi Arabia.
4. Luther, Calvin, Joe Smith, Henry VIII, Wesley et al, founders of Christian-based religions, also suffered from the belief in/hallucinations of "pretty wingy talking flying fictional thingie" visits and "prophecies" for profits analogous to the myths of Catholicism (resurrections, apparitions, ascensions and immaculate conceptions).
5. Hinduism (from an online Hindu site) - "Hinduism cannot be described as an organized religion. It is not founded by any individual. Hinduism is God centered and therefore one can call Hinduism as founded by God, because the answer to the question ‘Who is behind the eternal principles and who makes them work?’ will have to be ‘Cosmic power, Divine power, God’."
The caste/laborer system and cow worship are problems when saying a fair and rational God founded Hinduism."
6. Buddhism- "Buddhism began in India about 500 years before the birth of Christ. The people living at that time had become disillusioned with certain beliefs of Hinduism including the caste system, which had grown extremely complex. The number of outcasts (those who did not belong to any particular caste) was continuing to grow."
"However, in Buddhism, like so many other religions, fanciful stories arose concerning events in the life of the founder, Siddhartha Gautama (fifth century B.C.):"
Archaeological discoveries have proved, beyond a doubt, his historical character, but apart from the legends we know very little about the circumstances of his life. e.g. Buddha by one legend was supposedly talking when he came out of his mother's womb.
Bottom line: There are many good ways of living but be aware of the flaws i.e. the hallucinations, embellishments, lies and myths surrounding the founders and foundations of said rules of life.
Of course, I’m not saying Barack Obama is a prophet! But he does represent a prophetic voice – uniting people across religion, gender, ethnicity, age, even ideology – calling us back to the American “religion” of “life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness” for ALL Americans.
And that is why rational people not bamboozled by religion and the need for prophets are taken in by Obama. Obama appeals to those who want to be led, and not to those who want to be free. Democrats have figured out how to lose this election to the republicans one more time. Another month or so, it will matter little who wins the democratic nomination. They will be damaged goods.
