Looking for Authority and Respect

Archbishop Christodoulos and Gordon Hinckley were both church leaders who commanded enormous respect. Both were members of denominations that are hierarchical, that is, policy and theology—though often collegially discussed and interpreted—is dictated from the top down. The same could be said of the Roman Catholic Church and the other Orthodox churches throughout the world.

In these denominations, leadership styles and personalities have great impact on rank and file members and on others. Though I am a Baptist, I personally believe that two of the great leaders to come on the world stage in the last several decades have been Pope John Paul II, and now Pope Benedict. John Paul’s moral influence, not only on Catholics, but among non-Catholics, is one of the critical factors in the fall of Communism. So too, Benedict’s extraordinary intellect and leadership are exactly what Europe needs, confronted as they are with militant Islam.

In denominations like mine, what might be called the low church, the leaders have less established authority, but just as much moral authority. Who among American evangelicals would not regard Billy Graham with as much respect as Catholics have for the Pope? These are non-hierarchical Christian movements. So there may not be a direct line of authority at least in religious terms, but there is certainly the same respect for leadership.

In this age of celebrity, even religious leaders who some of us might not be particularly enamored of nonetheless have authority and followings that are as much a sociological phenomenon as religious.

"In this age of celebrity, even religious leaders who some of us might not be particularly enamored of nonetheless have authority and followings that are as much a sociological phenomenon as religious."

What authority do they have? Self appointed? Who elected your preacher? Who elected you? It is the height of arrogance to presume you have authority when you have not earned it or been granted it by those who "follow" you. Not surprising coming from someone who authored Nixon's "enemies list" and considered yourself to be valuable to Nixon because you were willing to be ruthless in getting things done.

Get over it Chuck, you have no authority except that which you take or presume. Authority is granted by people, not yourself. Even Christ did not presume authority over anyone. That was the most important part of His message, that no one has authority over you except God.

Billy Graham? Well, OK. But how about:

Jimmy Swaggart
Jim Bakker
Tammy Faye Bakker
Ted Haggard

If my understanding of Protestant doctrine is correct, all of the above have equal authority to proclaim the gospel of Christ and to claim the loyalty and obediance of Christians, no less than Billy Graham--or the Pope, or Charles Colson.

But I would surmise that few Christians believe any of the four deserve to be seen as speaking for Jesus, or to command a loyal following, or to be treated with respect and veneration.

So, tell us, Mr. Colson. How are we, the religiously illiterate, to tell the difference? If Billy Graham, the Pope, and you deserve a loyal, worshipful following, don't those four deserve a loyal, worshipful following?

Or, to turn the argument around: If we know for a fact that the above are a bunch of dishonest, hypocritical, emotionally and intellectually challenged scam artists, how do we not know that Billy Graham, the Pope, and you are not a bunch of dishonest, hypocritical, emotionally and intellectually challenged scam artists?

....."NARROW is the way that leads to salvation and FEW there are that find it."

Let me guess. You are one of the FEW?
Isn't it amazing how MANY think that they are one of the FEW.

Get a grip. You aren't special.

It is clear in your remarks that we definitively disagree on the Catholic Popes.
Just as a very small example of why these men should never have been trusted:
They presumed to be called the Vicar of Christ which is arrogance in the highest degree; They preach a false gospel of works in the infused righteousness doctrine and a false Christ in the doctrine of the Eucharist; And these men venerate the mother of Christ as being sinless, which is clear heresy [No one is good but God and Mary is not God].
Leadership does not presume truth, and YOU should know this Mr Colsen.
Jesus alone is the Savior and not all the men in the world banded together under one man will change that. NARROW is the way that leads to salvation and FEW there are that find it.

I am a Wiccan leader of a Tradition (denomination) and Coven (church) and an Elder in another Wiccan Church.
I can be replaced at anytime that I stop looking to the good of my charge. I am the face of the trad I belong to...it reflects me as well as the faith we love. It is my responcibility to be a face that is honest and responcible...we have much bad PR we need to over come and it is those who lead the small groups and circles that are working for equality with the larger religions.

To be a leader is to be in service...it is not for ego or for power. Those that use it for that..wether Wiccan or Christian, they do a disearvice to their people and their god/s.They will answer one way or another for it.

I have seen Wiccan leaders that I wanted to force to ask forgiveness of their people and their gods. They did not last long, for a people who love freedom and honor will not long stay under the heel of a despot.

Authority?? Derived from what or whom? Who says so?

That they have followings proves nothing more than that people have much in common with sheep. Look how many drank Jim Jones' Kool-Aid. Look at the Heaven's Gate nutcases, or those Branch Davidians who refused to leave the burning building.

Did their leaders have "authority"? How is it different from Charles Mansons?
