Unrepentant Liars on the Right and the Left
We have entered what columnist Kathleen Parker calls "a political era of uninhibited belligerence," that is finding expression in sermons, at town hall meetings, on radio talk shows, even on the floor of Congress -- especially when we differ. Why are people so angry and belligerent, and so willing to express their anger publicly? Why has our civil discourse become so uncivil? What does this public anger say about our private faith? What should we do about it?
I am always amused at the behavior of liberals and Democrats when it comes to civility. When they are "out of power" in Washington, they can say anything they want about conservatives and Republicans and rarely are they held accountable. Senator Majority Leader Harry Reid called President George W. Bush a "loser" and a "liar. Reid subsequently apologized for calling Bush a loser, but he refused to apologize for calling him a liar.
To the left, civility means conservatives and Republicans must surrender to Democratic ideas and policies. They are never expected to compromise with Republicans when Republicans are in the majority.
Politics has always been a contact sport. There once were canings and worse language than "you lie" on the floor of Congress. Alcohol fueled some of the rhetoric and first fights were always a possibility.
It is fine to pray for an ideal like civility, but the reality is something else. Better to pray that truth will triumph over the obfuscation that so regularly emanates from Washington. Maybe instead of praying about civility, politicians should be reminded that unrepentant liars are listed by Paul the Apostle when he chronicled those who won't be going to Heaven.

Picture Congressman Joe, yelling "You Lie", surrounded by other Republicans, with various expressions of self-righteous smirks, in spite of Joe's rudeness. Picture Rapper West, being booed off stage by those supposed low-life celebrities, with various expressions of shock and indignation at West's rudeness.
Where would you rather sit? I would chose to sit with those who recognize bad behavior and express their distain for such behavior. No, I wouldn't be sitting there high-fiving good ol' Joe, like all those Rebulicans. Where would you be sitting?

"This is the largest protest since the Vietnam war, and still you think people like your ideas?"
Oh, give it up, Theonefisher1. I was in D.C. when that silly protest was taking place, and I'd be surprised if there were even twenty-thousand people there. And most of those were bussed in from distant locales where conservative organizers were prepping them for their "act."
"Largest protest since Vietnam War" -- uh-huh. You need to get a new joke writer.

There is no proof of one single lie from George Bush. The war was voted on unanimously (including Obama by the way) with the same evidence the president had.
Obama has lied on over 21 distinct issues which are documented. He has even lied about things he said himself...how stupid!

I can't believe liberals are upset over Joe Wilson. While I understand it doesn't follow normal decorum in the House, we must have a short memory if we forget hundreds of dems booing Bush in the same context. It was a joint session of Congress and he was booed. It has never happened before. No one said a word. Liberals are the epitome of hypocrisy. What Mr. Wilson did was wrong. What the liberals did to Bush was wrong. It should all stop, but it won't. The Republican will be punished...nothing will happen to extreme liberals.
I will explain why there is so much anger. WE DONT LIKE THE POLICIES! You think that millions of people attend tea parties on tax day for no reason? This is the largest protest since the Vietnam war, and still you think people like your ideas? You refuse to believe that we have a differing opinion over policy. We aren't racist, we don't hate Obama, and we aren't inciting a riot. We don't agree with the policies you are forcing down our throats. And neither do your constituents as the election in 2010 will show. We know that you have been loving the supermajority, but it's over next year.
Yes, that's right. Gallup shows conservative values are the majority opinion in every single state now. Enjoy it. It will be a long time before the American people elect a Liberal again.

Yaknow, Cal?
How's that tiger-ride going for ya?
From another perspective, it might actually be funny to me.

Joe Wilson's real name is:
Addison Graves Wilson Senior
He lies when he call himself "joe".
YOU LIE!!
But seriously folks:
Policy differences don't cause people (especially a trained lawyer(liar?) and politician to burst out with an outburst. Deep emotional hatred does, possibly the kind Southern white males have demonstrated for centuries. Hmmmm.

Although the title of Mr. Thomas' essay includes Right and Left, the text of it would have none of that. It was all blame on the Left.
The Bush years are a blight on the Executive Branch, and on America. While Bush and Co. failed miserably in every conceivable way, interests of the Right have ramped up every available asset to work toward their wet dream of failure of the Obama years.
Just showing your Malevolent Christian Spirit again, Cal? Whoops, did I say that. Sounds so close to Benevolent...
Hardly the same though.
One sided and destructive, as usual, Mr. Thomas.

More of Cal's liberal bashing in the name of poor old Jesus. Like a car dealer exploiting a huge American flag lit up at night to attract attention, Cal exploits his Huckabee evangelicalism for political ends.
To the right, civility means liberals and Democrats must surrender to Republican ideas and policies. They are never expected to compromise with Democrats when Democrats are in the majority.

Way to turn a question about civility into another "it's all those liberals fault" rant Mr. Thomas. It must be comforting to know that all of your columns and prepared statements are done for the distant future since you tend to be a 'one trick pony' when it comes to any discussion.

How nice, Mr. Thomas, to know that you are amused by racial provocation, threatened violence, and monumental disrespect.
Were you also amused by Dick Cheney's recent assertion that he's "just fine" with the idea that some CIA interrogators may have exceeded legal guidelines for "enhanced interrogation"? How about Antonin Scalia's insistence that convicted criminals have fewer evidentiary rights for proving themselves innocent than do regular citizens? Did you find it funny when a vice-president told a member of Congress -- on the Congressional floor -- to "go f**k yourself"?
Yes, I'll bet you're just chuckling away at the misdeeds of your friends on the right.
Well, just as a reminder, let me point out that Harry Reid had no reason to apologize for calling Bush a "liar." Bush WAS a liar, as was demonstrated clearly, time and again, on justifications for the Iraq war.

To schaeffz:
Do you really look to Hollywood for moral guidance? I suggest opening a few good religious or philosophical books, you may find better material.
Cal:
You are an intelligent man, and you represent the Faith. And for these reasons, I sometimes wish you weren't so blatantly partisan. I lean more conservatively myself, but I think we shouldn't make it so easy for the Dems to lump the Religious Right as dogmatic.
