Can't Serve God and Uncle Sam

Dozens of major religious groups and denominations are urging Atty. Gen. Eric H. Holder Jr. to renounce a Bush-era memo that allows faith-based charities that receive federal funding to discriminate in hiring. Should religious charities that receive federal grant money be allowed to discriminate in hiring?

If they had refused federal help in the first place they would not be facing this predicament. When you get in bed with the lower kingdom you ultimately must forsake the higher kingdom and compromise your beliefs in order to satisfy the state. With shekels come shackles. Better not to have taken the money and "pray it in" as they used to say. Even in a struggling economy, God hasn't declared Chapter 11. He will provide the resources for the work He wants done.

I agree with Mr. Thomas. If you sleep with dogs, you will end up smelling like a dog. I wish he would have been more to the point. The target is on christian faith based cahrities.

I can think of many local school boards that at various times wanted to say the same thing. Federal funds are always contingent on federal mandates. On the other hand, those funds can do a lot of good in the right hands.

Mr Thomas doesn't seem to understand people of faith are entitled to compete for government grants on the same terms as everyone else. That's what freedom of religion means. Equal treatment under the law. As for hiring, any group can define any set of (legal) behavioral values that it desires to uphold and hire folks who subscribe to those (legal) values. This does not require discrimination on the basis of faith. The reason individuals hired by the faith-based charity subscribe to the specific values isn't relevant.

Mr. Thomas,

With all due respect, you are an insufferable snob.
