Charity and Responsibility Begin at Home

Yes and No. How's that for sounding like a politician? I would first need to know the meaning of "handled responsibly." But using my definition of conservative investments and living within one's means, yes if that help comes first from family and neighbors. That is what Americans used to do back when we knew our neighbors and people didn't move so often.

I recall my mother telling me that when my Dad was away in World War II and she ran out of ration stamps before the end of the month, a neighbor who had a few extra would give them to her. The following month if the neighbor ran out, my mother would share any extras she had, Maybe that's where "charity begins at home" came from.

We have been living way over our heads, believing not only that we are entitled to do so, but that we are entitled to other people's money if we fail to live up to our own expectations. For those who have fallen on hard times because of indolence, I refer them to Paul's admonition: "If a man will not work, neither shall he eat." (II Thessalonians 3:10)

The threat of an empty stomach is a great motivator. In our day, though, one can be expected to not work and still eat thanks to the government, which never tires of spending other people's money if they promise to vote for the party that gives them food instead of giving them hope.

Since people do move so often, what do you propose to do about it? What if help does not come first from family and neighbors? Will you pass a law forbidding people from moving? Ignore desperate people you are not personally acquainted with? Magically turn back the clock to a mythical time when Americans did not frequently move (which was never)? Note that during WWII when you imagine people knew one another, mobility was the highest in U.S. history, and the government was rationing food and making certain that everyone had enough. Those ration tickets went to everyone, including people who could not work. Your neighbors did not mind sharing the stamps because they got them for free. (You still had to pay for the food, but the rationing stamp was free.) At no time in our history was the nation more socialistic.

You have identified a problem and then turned away without offering a solution. The solution is to help strangers.

You call yourself a Christian, but you are not. I am an atheist and yet I am more Christian than you. Shame on you!

You wrote, "I am an atheist and believe that Jesus was a man like all men. But I admire his love of all humanity and feel such admiration for it that I can do no less."

I hope that you do not take this the wrong way but I am going to say it anyway.

There are some "atheists" that are more "Christian" in the true sense of the word than some people who profess to be "Christian".

I have said this and similar things many times when I have stated that: God is a searcher of hearts and minds, not of religious affiliations or lack thereof and that it is important what one does and why one does it and what one knows.

Take care, be ready.

Sincerely, Thomas Paul Moses Baum.

When you feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick you do unto me. I believe that is what the man, Jesus is supposed to have said.

A hungry person is a hungry person regardless of whether he lives as ant or grasshopper. (I'm assuming all know the story) If I have a large bowl of beans, what does it avail me to not share them? What pleasure can I get out of teaching the grasshopper a lesson, and what lesson does the grasshopper learn other than how cruel others can be?

Do unto others as ye would have them do unto you. Another of the man, Jesus' sayings.

I am an atheist and believe that Jesus was a man like all men. But I admire his love of all humanity and feel such admiration for it that I can do no less.

>> The threat of an empty stomach is a great
>> motivator.

Right. When I was pregnant, sick, newly-widowed, and up to my ears in medical-related debt, your quote was one of the comments made to me by my mother and stepfather. It was their excuse not to even send their grandchildren a Christmas present.

In the end our poverty was a great 'motivator'. It motivated me to take the kids and leave the monstrous country the US has become.

I don't bother to visit my parents. They can damn well take care of themselves, and if they can't then that is their problem. That is what I told their neighbour who called to inform me of their suffering and their poor physical state.

You speak of 'hope'. The first hope that I knew came the day I arrived, when my new neighbour, a retired engineer and the only man in the village who speaks English, took my hand and said, 'Madame, you and your children are in France. You are safe now.'

At first the French government spent French money on us. But within the year I was paying taxes. Last year I paid over 100k Euros, money which will look after my fellow Frenchmen just as they once looked after my children and me. My oldest son will be a pediatric nurosurgeon within the year, and my next younger son is studying biochemistry. They were born Americans, but are now loyal to the country that took us in and gave us the care that was unavailable in the US.

You know nothing of real compassion.

Now I am in a position where I can give instead of receiving. I see in my children the gentleness and kindness, and none of that hard-nosed selfishness so common in Americans.

I can hardly believe this post is from someone billed as a Christian. I went back and looked through the Gospels. Nowhere did I see Jesus telling us to only help the poor that had acted responsibly.

Also, take a look at the early church in Jerusalem where all shared what they had, where there was no distinction between rich and poor and where the rich sold their land and brought their money to the Apostles so that it could be distributed to the church.

Has love of the free market system so blinded us to the need for charity? And how can anybody still defend a system that just robbed all of us blind?

If you see a hungry child, will you just pass by because he is hungry due to his parents' moral or financial failures?

Some people have been living over the heads, but a lot of people lost their jobs or commited the terrible sin of getting sick without having good insurance. I guess we should just throw the loosers on the streets while the rest of us feel smuch and self righteous about our good values, and wisdom... until we lose our jobs or get sick.

If a man is hungry because he acted foolish, is he any less hungry that the man who was victim of bad circumstances? Maybe we should make the poor wear lables at the soup kitchens to make sure that the foolish starve.

In hard times, tent cities rise across the country
Since foreclosure mess, homeless advocates report rise in encampments

RENO, Nev. - A few tents cropped up hard by the railroad tracks, pitched by men left with nowhere to go once the emergency winter shelter closed for the summer.

Then others appeared — people who had lost their jobs to the ailing economy, or newcomers who had moved to Reno for work and discovered no one was hiring.

Within weeks, more than 150 people were living in tents big and small, barely a foot apart in a patch of dirt slated to be a parking lot for a campus of shelters Reno is building for its homeless population. Like many other cities, Reno has found itself with a "tent city" — an encampment of people who had nowhere else to go.

From Seattle to Athens, Ga., homeless advocacy groups and city agencies are reporting the most visible rise in homeless encampments in a generation.

Nearly 61 percent of local and state homeless coalitions say they've experienced a rise in homelessness since the foreclosure crisis began in 2007, according to a report by the National Coalition for the Homeless. The group says the problem has worsened since the report's release in April, with foreclosures mounting, gas and food prices rising and the job market tightening.

"It's clear that poverty and homelessness have increased," said Michael Stoops, acting executive director of the coalition. "The economy is in chaos, we're in an unofficial recession and Americans are worried, from the homeless to the middle class, about their future."
