Islam Must Put Its House in Order

Whenever we hear such claims, we hear few, if any, counter claims that what Hamas (and their murderous brothers throughout the Middle East) believes and practices is doctrinally impure and heresy. One wishes the counter voices would be heard in greater numbers and with more ferocity than those of the jihadists. It makes one wonder whether claims that Islam has been hijacked by extremists are legitimate, or if such claims are simply bromides for duping the West, their ultimate target. If, as they claim, Islam is being misrepresented by extremists, it is essential that those who believe it is a "religion of peace," isolate, silence and, if necessary, fight the hijackers. If they don't, reasonable people will conclude that what we are seeing on our television and in our newspapers is, in fact, the norm and not an exception. It is up to Islam to put its house in order.

For whatever reason, there are many more murders committed in the name of Islam than any other religion in the world today and they seem to have an exclusive on group murder/suicide. As long as the disconnect between the overall reaction of the Umma to these acts is mild compared to that of Dutch cartoonists rendering depictions of the prophet, Cal Thomas has a strong point.

Christianity / Judaism cannot "put its house in order." It is an organized assault on reason, respect, tolerance, and humanity. It needs to be extirpated.

How about the children? How how all the people in Palestine that just want a decent life for themesleves and their children? How about the Jewish children? - What nonsense - to just blame the muslims - that's as silly as Carter just blaming the Jews many of whom harbor no animosity toward the Palestinians as well.

One wishes "Christian" counter voices would be heard in greater numbers and with more ferocity than those of the intolerant white evangelicals like Cal.

Islam is not the only religion to put its house in order, there are many others who should follow that advice.

There are many good and decent followers of Islam. I get the feeling they would be good and decent even if they were not followers of Islam.

The "extremists" and terroists would be better people if they did not have the justifications available for killing, violence, and fighting available in the Koran and other texts of Islam.

Very serious and fundamental reform of Islam is necessary. Christianity reformed itself for the better over the last 1000 years, but the Bible never justifies the kind of intolerance of other beliefs that you see in the Koran. I don't think anyone can "moderate" the Koran.

Is Eboo Patel really a Muslim who believes in the Koran and in the prophet Muhamed? Probably not. He just does not have any other religious identity, so he talks about moderation and interfaith dialogue. I feel this kind of "peaceful religion" talk is a state of denial that is hindering the reform necessary.

It's better to call it like it is, and then try to fix it. If you can't fix it, just put the book down and walk away.

If 'Islam' was a monolithic organization such as Cal seems to suggest, his point MIGHT make sense. Suggesting that the "West", a vague appellation at best, is the ultimate target of all Islam has a strong whiff of paranoia to it.
