I do think, however, you and your "orthodox Christians" (possibly with the exception of Mike Huckabee who outright says he would change the Constitution to "God's Standards) are still dodging Cal's basic question, "How do you apply scripture to governing?"

Do you and yours respect my Constitutional right to disagree with you (whether you think your punitive God will get me or not)?

I find it amazing that lepers, sinners, and the soldiers under the centurion have such great faith in Jesus and his miracles. Remember Jesus is in the House of Lepers; there is where the ten met him along with Simon.

I disagree with Usama1 on the reasons America supports Israel, "even though it is in violation" of this or that standard of behavior. America (and Americans) support Israel because:
I. Israel is a democracy. The Israeli people seek to rule themselves by concensus, negotiation and political compromise, much like America does. The primarily Arab and Islamic opponents of Israel generally do not. Rather, they seek to rule all people through religious dictat, tribalism, and on the basis of a superior/inferior religion/class structure. Arabs/muslims appear to Americans to act in a dictatorial, irrational, and bigoted manner, the ultimate reactionaries. Apartheid is alive and well in all of the middle east, whether it is racial, religious or tribal/class-based.
You can say Israel is all of these things, but in our country we have a saying: "The pot calling the kettle black." Saying such about Israel while refusing to admit it about the rest of the middle east is - well, I want to say hypocritical, but that is an overused term that indicates self-righteousness and intolerance. Let's go with sanctimonious.
II. Israel is the underdog. that is, Israel exists in the midst of enemies, any of which, if they had the will and organization, could destroy Israel's ability to exist. The reasoning for Israel's ostracism seems suspect - that no Muslim land can ever be sold or forfeited to any non-Muslim. that is a strange and untenable idea to Americans, I doubt we'll ever get hold of that concept.
III. Israel is strong in the face of adversity. the nation thrives culturally and economically in the face of the dangers cited above. Israelis do not let a siege mentality destroy their creativity, but rather react with strength and determination when assailed by their neighbors/enemies.
IV. There may be something to the "accusation" that some American evangelical supporters of Israel believe we live in the end times and Israel has a special place in that eschatology. However, I believe that has never been a feature of the American government's support for the state of Israel, at least up until the Bush administration. Even now I am not sure about that and would not go on record as suggesting that our government uses a particular Biblical interpretation to form foreign policy. We are, for the most part, very pragmatic in that regard.

But let's not mention the suicide bombings inflicted on women and children in Israel,or the terrorism played out over the Middle east as it becomes more unstable, while Israel has always been America's staunchest ally. Let's also not mention all the medical and educational programs Israel still provides to poor Palestinians when they are allowed, or all the attempts to make peace that have been blown by the Arabs.

You misunderstand scripture. Mankind turned from God overall since Eden. We are on our own for now, by our own choice. Many agree to that even to this day (thru denial of a deity, etc).

So, to those who deny God's existence or even involvement in individual human lives have only themselves to blame for the diseases, maladies and sufferings we bring upon ourselves, homosexuals, non-homosexuals...there is no one group immune from this absolute.

The only scripture that applies to government in the US is the law. Scripture in the ordinary sense is a product of a particular church. That would have no place in US government, even though it has been sneaked in at times. In this country we distinctly separate the functions of church and government. Not everyone is happy with this arrangement.

The support for Israel is intended to fulfill the prophecies of the return of Jesus and the subsequen Rapture. This has been a common belief in American Protestant beliefs for centuries going back to the early 19th century. However, the negative outcome of this policy is that the prophecies ALSO indicate that the anti-Christ will precede Jesus and dominate the world with evil.
So IF their foreign policy is effective and consistent, American Evangelicals will actually support the rise of the anti-Christ too given that HIS rise to power in the world will ALSO be a precursor to the return of Jesus and the Rapture.

Evangelicals need to think about this: do you really want America to support the Anti Christ?

The fact of the matter is, we humans bring on our own suffering. In this case, the recompence meet due to the error are the diseases caused by our behaviors. Some even to the point that lives are lost due to certain diseases.

No reason to equate it with FBI or police 'searching out and killing'...that would be a whole different problem on top of what I stated above, wouldn't it?

And this is a problem with trying to equate scripture with law: it's hard enough to interpret the law itself, never mind claim a religious book is 'really' what it means. Cause there's ugly, ugly things in those books, as easy to quote as you please, by anyone, for any purpose.

Amazing how people think the old and new testament differ so much. Very few people even know that yesterday, known by many as the 'Jewish New Year', was actually the Feast Day, High Holy Day, of Trumpets. Has meaning in the OT, obviously. What many dont know is that it has corresponding meaning in the NT. Did you know the NT church kept it, the Passover, etc. before the Nicene council did its number? All of the 7 annual Holy Days of the OT have NT meaning. The Feast of Trumpets, in a NT light, also shadows the blowing of trumpets at Christ's return to earth.

Scripture should *not* be applied to governing, not as a basis, anyway, is what it is. Government and people in it, furthermore, should demonstrate that they know the difference.

Even where a common view of what a religious doctrine demands seems to be perfectly in alignment, (say, that walking up to someone and shooting them isn't to be permitted,) this doesn't mean that the laws against murder are *based* on a Scripture that says this: the laws are *based* on the fact that this behavior is bad for the society that the government ...is meant to govern.

Our government is a social contract. We the people. With each other. Not 'under religion.'

If the public good and a scripture agree, great. If they don't, this doesn't give someone the right to wave Scripture and override the public good, or the reason by which we determine these things.

If America is to become a "Christian Nation" with, as Huckabee suggests, a Constitution meeting "God's Standards." McCain and Palin have to enforce ALL the scriptures, not just the ones they like for their narrow political agenda.
