Poison Apples on the Money Tree
The New Testament (as well as the Old...see Ecclesiastes) is loaded with verses warning of the dangers of worshipping money and of the rich failing to have regard for the poor.
The reason is that the more money people have, the less they seem to trust in God. Prosperity is a double-edged sword. In our culture, one's value is often determined by the size of their bank account and home, the car they drive, the clothes they wear and the associations they have (usually with other wealthy and powerful people). But this is not how God regards us. Since He owns it all anyway, what we have is from Him. He wants to see how we use it and whether wealth is used to build our modern "golden calves," or does it honor Him? Do we care for others who are less fortunate?
In our day, government has replaced private charity and too many have acted as if that frees them from their responsibilities and privileges of using their wealth in a constructive way.
While politicians blame each other (and both Obama and McCain are wrong in their assigning of blame), the rest of us should see the Wall Street crisis as a teachable moment. Too many of us have equated wants with needs. God promises to supply all of our needs "according to His riches in Christ Jesus," not all of our wants (the prosperity gospel frauds on TV notwithstanding). Our greatest need is not money, but redemption from sin.
I have friends who have refused to eat from the money tree. They live within their means and seem happier and more content than those who are constantly grasping for the next rung on the success ladder, obsessing that they might fall off.

Nonsense, 'Truth.' The Puritans who came here to burn witches and found a theocracy aren't the root of America. There was this little thing called a 'Revolution,' remember?
Look at the old coins, they didn't stick 'In God We Trust' on there till much later.
You can see Lady Liberty in a French Revolutionary cap into the late 19th century. This supposed 'Christian Right Heritage' is revisionism. My analysis in general indicates that theocrats have been responsible for most of the *obstructions* to liberty, and got in bed with certain greedy powers for manipulation of the political system quite some time ago, actually opposing everything from freeing the slaves in the Declaration of Independence to desegregation in my lifetime. Queer people were fighting for the right not to be arbitrarily jailed, beaten and raped by the police, even around when I was born, still virulently opposed by the 'faithful' people who think 'liberty and justice for all' only meant certain kinds of believers.
The hysteria and radicalism of the 'Anti-Masonic' party looks to me to be the actual genesis of much of this 'Christian nationalism' thing.
Certainly there's a Puritan and Calvinist strain in the old-money aristocracy, but the actual Puritans weren't interested in anything so egalitarian as the United States of America.
Very similar moves in that oft-forgotten bit of history to inserting 'Under God' in the Pledge of Allegiance during the Red Scare and making off like it was always there.

It is a mortal sin to lend money for interest.
You are not a Christian if you do so.

The perceived 'push' of Christianity is not a push, but rather a reinforcement. It has been an intregal part of our society since the Puritans, etc came here.
The actual 'push' is the very opposite: those who deny a creator and have crafted a counterfeit, secular dogma that has gotten mankind nothing but failed societies and immoral quagmires that have hindered, not helped.

Morality can be expressed simply by the saying, "we must all hang together or we will hang separately." Hanging together is the essence of morality. Those who would exploit any resource for their own benefit, without regard for the needs of others like themselves, are immoral, and have the capability to bring all of us to ruin. This is a lesson that cannot be learned in one lifetime, maybe not even in several, but it is a lesson that any educated and experienced human being knows well. What we have not yet learned is how to deal with the immoral among us when they have achieved great power, and can no longer be held morally accountable. Democratic government is the treatment we have been experimenting with.

It's all greed and google and gore today. God is put down and a bunch of people are running these networks to suit themselves. The same old, same old thing as always. Not much can be done about it. Find common ground and try to keep the kids safe and fed. It's going to get worse and hopefully the GGG crew won't burn down the newspapers for this great so called digital future of the future 666. Don't get burned alive trying to be good. Only God knows some things and all we can do is plant for the future. I have a paper to go read. Good luck with the search, you will need it. O50, over and out for now.

Norman-
You are very mistaken. History shows that mankind, through its greed, lust for power and things, materiality, money, etc is counterproductive to solving poverty in the world. God, believe it or not, provided a lush world where we can thrive if not for the people in it that want to control its bounty for their own gain. Look at Africa where we in the US send grain but the tyrants there won't allow it to be distributed.
God loves us, and wants the best for us - but people screw with his creation and then turmoil occurs afterwards.

They have one way charity in the works and searchables searching for a soul too to call their own. If we all turn into soulless drones, Google will find our faith and sell it back to the next generation penny by penny. It's always something and I can't find my remote control. I burned lunch again. I cut the burned part off and ate it. I think I'll go pick an apple and clean up after Ike. Ike is generating tons O ad dollars for Google. Houston we have a problem and it's in the computer. Wait it's lost in the jetstream.

This hardly argues for the conservative politicians that the Religious Right and evangelicals keep *insisting* on.
This is a direct result of these people the 'values voters' keep putting in power and calling it a virtue to give the Wall Street fatcats privatized and deregulated profit while they make the *people* take on all the risk and cry for bailouts from their own irresponsibility.
Somehow I don't think the Lehman executives who'd been getting big bonuses are going to see much of a dent in their lifestyles.
This isn't a problem of popular 'sinful greed' ...it's about exploiters turning the government into a machine to transfer wealth from the nation to a privileged few, even to the point of wanting to decide who gets the crumbs the wealthy care to throw when they're feeling generous on a holiday.
The 'Invisible hand of the market' didn't slap these guys in time, did it?
This is the result of a *looting of the American Dream.* Deregulation. And non-enforcement.
Which the people the 'Values Vote' insisted on, thinking it more important to hurt queer people and push Christianity than to pay attention to what's been going on in this country where it counts.

their 'Commander in Chief' or 'Executive' who's goal is Provoking someone somewhere or Bullying, via nice & Convincing Words, is what America is about with War mongering Armageddon Loving Republicans . Democrats too??
Remember During American CiViL-WAR & WW-1??? Fact: Them ‘Investment Bankers’ Manipulate Leaders of Democracy , Monarchs, Theocracys etc…
Fact: Example: They (Investment Bankers & their Robber Barons) ‘Financed’ [my Major] the SOUTH (who today own 70% of America via Stock Equity & tax free Church FUNDs) During the CiViL-WAR on One Side, and also simultaneously Financed Civil War on the NORTH side (who is now Left Holding the Bag via today’s Lehmans Scandal & Fannie-may/mac Mortgage Scandal, and remember the , McCain & Keating-5 Savings & Loans scandal , The Evangelical Enrons Scandal(s)….?, .
AMERiCA is BANKRUPT! Not Only BROKE!
Note: What or who is the next [Enemy/Scape goat, aka Blame Game] after Iraq ? or Afghanistan? Etc.. going to be???

Any look at history shows that God does not provide: neither material things, nor security, nor even life. Life is a deadly gamble and if there is a God he doesn't give a fig.

All you can do is plant seeds and watch them grow. Wall Street planted the seeds of their own destruction and now they want us to stand still and quit growing. According to this logic, I should pay them to come to my garden and take all the food they want. All the good keeps growing and what is meant to die always does. If I die today, there's food in the garden so help yourselves to what you want. You won't bother me.
