We Need a President, Not a Pastor
I think most people want competence first and ideology second. That would include religious belief. Knowing where -- or if -- someone attends religious services and his/her view of God is interesting, but it tells me nothing about how the candidate, if elected, will run the country. Too often in the past, presidential candidates on both sides have used religious language and practices as a tool for helping attract a certain demographic. But sometimes those presidents have been a disappointment, because the expectations that come from religious believers are not uniform.
Better, then, not to put one's faith up-front, but to first establish one's positions and vision in the public mind. Then, if a candidate wishes to talk about religious faith, that's fine. After all, we are electing a president of a country that is part of a fallen world. We are not members of a search committee looking for a new pastor. They are two different "kingdoms."

Cal Thomas will change his tune the moment Huckabee is no longer perceived to be a threat to Guilani. Which is a reason I am cackling deliciously at Huckabee's success in Iowa tonight.
After using his media forum for years to sell Bush's credibility b/c of Bush's alleged "faith" (a tune Thomas continued to sing no matter how much Bush & C0. violated and contradicted GENUINE Gospel values), Thomas would have us believe he no longer believes in religion in politics.
Or has this support for theocracy - I mean "faith's friends in government" died out because Cal's Republican friends find Guliani closest to their greedy hearts? You see, the same people who gave us Cheney/Bush have found a new soulmate in Guilani. So we need to be persuaded to overlook the amoral New Yorker's morals, as well as his political ethics, hmmmmm?
Gosh, are we really that stupidly gullible to believe Cal has EVOLVED rather than changed his dance tune in the service of Republican ambitions?
"Christian values" have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, FOLKS. The Christian beatitude about the meek inheriting the earth sends these politicians and their media spokesmen/women into a cold sweat.
Go back to ranting about global warming activists, Cal, where you are at least an honest liar.

The American elections be an unnessary farce,the truth be america a dictatorship in all but name. Americans consume by far greater of the planets resources, they place Govt as leader which they firstly expect supplying such resources. Ongoing slaughter in the middle east, which but only to, secure USA oil supply as it's vast oil profits. The next main election there will be a Democrat party victory. For leader two choices. HILLARY CLINTON, whom still having some morals as sense. As President will serve USA needs yet trying to balance USA responsability, to the rest of the world. The other choice of president be BARACK OBAMA whom being niave to the extreme. In return for glory of political power, being president he will fully serve the powers that be giving full comittment in securing the needs of the USA above all else. Such result in a extension of present USA policies, leaving a worldwide trail of death destruction, injustice, torture, suffering... .. .

Thomas is one of those right wing "media" people who pretends to believe his own pious rhetoric and will swing with whatever wind will benefit his partisan agenda. "Christian values" have NOTHING TO DO WITH IT, FOLKS.
Thomas doesn't really believe that the meek will inherit the earth; such a though probably sends him and his friends into a cold sweat.

Cal Thomas calls this cosmos the "fallen world."
~~~~~~~~
It is! The whole wide world, entire cosmos is fallen! And we know when it fell,
http://www.hoax-buster.org/sellyoursoul
Evangelicals have sold their souls to Lucifer and now want to use the power of government to force everyone to be like them.
What if everyone was exactly like Cal Thomas? How far can the "fallen world" fall is all that would tell us. There is a limit, a bottom of all, sewage disposal better known as hell.
This article is thoughtful. When imagination and subjectivity are introduced to the discussion, facts are distorted and the pubic is duped into their own belief system.
God and faith and religion are wonderful. Beware when the politicians play it up.
I would be happy to provide him with a few razor blades in order that he can relieve himself of the delay of leaving it.
Now you're getting somewhere Cal.
However, "...if elected, will run the country" leaves a lot to be desired. The president nor anyone else "runs the country." The whole idea behind democracy is to eliminate "runners of the country" -kings they are called along with several other titles like emperor and dictator.
Think, "the president is a servant of the people." Servants don't run anything beyond the toilet and the kitchen. You could say driving the car is running it but the idea is to get Miss Daisy where she wants to go and not the servant behind the wheel getting where he wants to go.
Try this on for size. Let's put a ticket for each of the members of the federal government in a barrel and draw one out to be FIRED by "we the people" just to let them turkeys know who the boss is. Kinda let those servants know they can't take over the house.
It's thinking like "rule the country" and "run the country" that destroys democracy. Democracy requires the people to be the boss and they cannot be the boss if they listen to ministers or anyone other than themselves when picking their servants. And the people must never lose sight of the fact that politicians are servants who at present, hat in hand are applying for the job of servant and never boss or ruler or anything remotely close.
That's not too big a mental step for you is it Mr Thomas?
I'm trying to figure out Cal's angle here. Could it be that after seven years of shilling for Bush he shudders at the thought of shilling for a Huckabee administration? Can't say I blame him...
cal: "Too often in the past, presidential candidates on both sides have used religious language and practices as a tool for helping attract a certain demographic."
Yep... that would be the largest, most powerful and most influential voting bloc, accounting for around 85% of the adult population of the USA... the stupid, gullible and ignorant.
cal: "But sometimes those presidents have been a disappointment, because the expectations that come from religious believers are not uniform."
Well... consider who elected them. We have the stupid, gullible and ignorant voting in the amoral, dishonest and manipulative. What else might you expect? We get what we deserve.
cal: "After all, we are electing a president of a country that is part of a fallen world. We are not members of a search committee looking for a new pastor. They are two different 'kingdoms'."
'Fallen world'?... 'two different kingdoms'? Oops... I forgot... you're a part of that huge, powerful voting bloc.
Sorry. Never mind.
Cal, says competence first and then ideology, including religion, second. Ideology and religion are very close second, otherwise the candidates would not spend so much time on ideology. Morals and religion take priority when the issues are serious, such as sex in the white house and lying under oath. Or breaking and entering your opponents headquarters and covering this up. Religion has to take priority over competence if someone were to run who is a fundamentalist Koran or Bible beater who would, for example, want all women to cover up and begin executing gays. Under these circumstances, it would be dangerous to allow even the most competent person access to power.
Don't be taken in by Cal.
As soon as Huckabee is eliminated from the race (ie: an actual Xian candidate who believes this religious crap) Cal will hop back on the "we're more religious than the Dems" bandwagon.
Count on it. Death and taxes stuff.
What a sensible post. My jaw just about dropped out of my mouth.
Of course when you have been dead for about 90 years, these things happen.
Keep the faith, brother.
Let's just declare victory for the year and go home! Cal is absolutely dead on!
I can't think of anything about someone's faith or lack thereof that has on whit to do with their attractiveness as a leader by comparison with a competent person of integrity utterly lacking in faith or who promises to keep their faith out of their leadership.
Mr. Cal Thomas,
It would seem that as you implied that there are two different "kingdoms", one led by a president heading a "fallen world"; and another headed by a "pastor" to restore the "fallen world" through salvation, inevitably the two kingdoms within the state will have to co-exist within the parameters of seperation of church and state, or to clash, or to fight for supremacy in the state. Again.
Both sides do have incompetent, immoral and unethical leaders.
Happy New Year
Thank you and best regards
"J"
DAMN! Miracles DO happen! Cal Thomas actually wrote something that makes sense!
I don't care if a candidate worships JHWH, Allah, Vishnu, Kali, or Isadora Duncan. I'm voting for a chief executive, not a chief priest.
I DO care whether that candidate will uphold the Constitution. A candidate's religious beliefs only become problematic for me if s/he puts them ahead of secular law when it comes to policy decisions, as Shrubya has been known to do.
This is a thoughtful analysis of how to choose a leader of our country.
I remember becoming an athiest in late middle school and early in high school. I was still working out the details of how this world works. I was a moralist to the extreme. While others who called themselves religious or didn't even think of such questions partyed through school, I read and meditated on what was the ultimate origion and fate of the Universe and me.
I didn't have a girlfriend until I was a senior in high school. She was from a Baptist family, I won's say what kind, but her father was a preacher and her uncle was a preacher. But this girl was fallen in a sence with family compliance...I won't go into details.
Even though I stuck to my guns on my beliefs, they openly accepted me and didn't ridicule me. They were more than happy to have someone like me in her life - as I was lucky to have met her because she brought me out of my shell.
That experience has been with me and made me love my Christian upbringing (even though, back then I struggled with that), love the story of Jesus, even if I am also an athiest and agnostic. But those are just words and don't encompass the entire me, my complete belief system.
I think we can all be together in this country, in this world, regardless of our beliefs.
Thank you, Cal, for reinforcing my quest to unite the many very different types of people that touch my life.
