Temporal and Eternal Cures
People with faith in God who are "called according to His purpose" have a dual interest in fighting poverty and disease. There is the temporal benefit of doing good to a fellow human being and the delight in seeing that life fulfill its potential. And there is the even greater motivation of acting as God's agent in demonstrating His love for the physical body in order that the person on the receiving end of that love might open his or heart to the eternal message of salvation in and through Jesus Christ. It is He who has the ultimate answer to the poverty of the soul and the "disease" called sin.

Only a college student:
Thanks for your response and the interesting dialogue. I can appreciate the circumstances that drive people to religion just as I can appreciate the circumstances that drive people to crime. I feel that neither is justified by its motivations, because in both cases the intended ends (financial security on the one hand, spiritual security on the other) are illusory. For those reasons I continue to question the basis for their motivations.
What you refer to as the "gray area in between" represents an area where people are willing not to be explicit about their beliefs in order not to face the need to reconcile the real conflicts. For example, what do you mean by "spirituality"? Is it a belief in something distinct but immaterial, or just a vague sense or hope of "something else"? How exactly could people practice science (which assumes that material effects have material causes) and also believe in immaterial causers? When people are forced to examine their beliefs I think they find conflicts or reveal that their definitions are imprecise.
The Catholic church's stance on evolution is a good example. The previous Pope claimed there was no conflict between Catholicism and evolution, but I suspect his view of evolution was inconsistent with how scientists understand and study evolution. I don't see a way to accept both that evolution is an undirected process and that humans were intended to be at the end of that process, god-like in image, ready to receive a soul.
As a college professor, I find it somewhat alarming that a systematic goal of your education was to promote the concept of "human nature." Human behavior is almost infinitely adaptable, flexible, and strongly culturally influenced. Avoidance of stigmatized, state-provided welfare services, for example, is a relatively modern concept, and most human societies (and here I am talking about distinct cultural groups, not the mainly westernized economic cultures you may be refering to) hold no such concepts. ("Avoidance of stigma" is less a hallmark of human nature than a definition--it wouldn't be stigma if people didn't avoid it, no?) I wouldn't say it was a waste of your education to recognize certain patterns in human behavior, but "human nature" is an unnecessary and over-reaching universal.
Finally, as someone who also still yearns for his mother's latkes (I'm the one who makes them now) I can understand what you mean by an ingrained culture. You shouldn't take offense, I most definitely count myself as someone influenced by familial persuasion--the fact that I still identify with being Jewish has everything to do with my experience as a child and nothing to do with religious feelings (or lack thereof) as an adult. On the other hand, I know the pangs of ingrained god-guilt, which I have now all but vanquished, which leads me to guess that your persistent attachment to spirituality also has familial roots. Children do not start believing in a god, they are convinced by the messages they receive at a time when they are extremely impressionable.

Rafael:
I think people have a tendency to close their minds to life circumstances when they think about why people have faith in religion. As I said, I don't know if God exists--but then again, no one does. I don't know if I solidly believe in God. Since everything in my life pretty much works out--from an upper-middle class background to being fortunate in friends, family, and similar comforts--I have the luxury of questioning others' blind faith. However, the reason that, for example, religious faith is much stronger in a number of developing countries is because people with a house when they were house hunting yeneed something to explain what is out of their control. If economic, nutritional, and physical stability is out of one's control, one is inclined to "leave things up to God" and believe that things happen "for a reason." This is an example of what I view to be human nature. Obviously, such poverty makes me think that there cannot be a God if he turns his back on his/her "children." However, development economists consistently have to consider the possible religious and social ramifications of infrastructure improvements, policy implementation, etc. It's not always black and white, with a person being a complete atheist or Canyon. There is gray in between, and for some reason people don't like that middle camp. I also make the distinction between belief in an organized, mindwashing religion and spirituality, but I don't get the feeling you do the same.
A last word on "human nature": If I believed that "human nature" was a term used only to impose beliefs on others, it would be a huge waste of a great deal of my liberal arts education...for some reason, my college has remained obsessed with human nature and philosophy (i.e., their curriculum circa the 18th century that an English king or someone set). Also a great waste of the amount of time I spent studying how it affects economic policy considerations and so forth...such as a huge proportion of impoverished in developing countries do not avail of state-provided welfare services because of the stigma faced. THIS is human nature--it's real.
I admire your belief in rationality--there are not enough people like you out there, or the world would not be such a mess. However, people are not always using God to explain how our solar system formed (which we are not sure about). Obviously, some do...Canyon certainly does. Many use God as explanation of desperate circumstances (see above).
And I wouldn't count me as an example of "familial persuasion," as my family believes in a religion that is so melded with our culture that they cannot be exclusive. I, for one, have met very few (if any) persons who were born Jewish, decided they were atheistic, and, regardless, did not yearn for his mother's latkes on Hannukah or did not enjoy sympathizing with other Jewish friends about the stereotypical "nagging" Jewish mother.
All I am saying is you don't have to believe in EITHER religion OR science. Obviously, this isn't rational. But many things aren't, such as systematically rejecting gray area.

Canyon,
I'm happy to make you laugh. You probably need all the laughter you can get in your state of self-loathing and delusion.
Because I use a word you had to look up you think it's BS. Senescence actually has meaning to it beyond getting old. It is the breakdown of specific physical and physiological processes inherent in all living things. You seem to think that Christianity explains death, but I haven't heard an explanation beyond humans--are all living things sinful? Did bacteria fall from grace because they decomposed the forbidden apple, is that why they die too?
On the other hand, there is robust biological theory that explains why all living things die, called senescence theory. I suggest you learn about it, because it is beautiful in its simplicity and its reliance on the same first principles that drive all biological thought. And, its assumptions have been tested, something you just cannot do with religion.
I think we all agree that observing something and knowing why it happens are two very different things. That gap between observing pattern and understanding it must be bridged by some method. I'll go with the method that gives a way to test alternative ideas, not the one that tells me the answer is written in a 2000 year old book. You make the same choice I do every day in your reliance on modern transportation, food, communication, construction, and medicine.
Let me know when you've worked out an answer about the bacteria.

Paganplace,
Your incredibly complex and unfounded view of Christianity and reality is so odd I have no idea where to begin to address it. Nothing you have said remotely details my beliefs, nor any Christians I know of.
I've asked you this before, and you never answered, I'll reword it. In as few words as possible; if Christianity is true, why do Christians go to Heaven and pagans go to Hell?
All,
In an unrelated note, Rafael always makes me laugh, most atheists are rich in faith, Rafael is an exception, he has filled what he cannot know in with lies which he has no interest to back up with fact. His faith in these facts is incredible, but he cannot be accused of blind-faith, only deceived faith. See his post on getting old (notice the big word he used, which in science is known as "Baffle Them With Bull-Excrement"). Observing something and knowing why it happens are two very different things.
You will fall to senesence, the reason being because you are born of a sinful race and have sinned. Repent of your sins and trust in the only sinless Man ever to live, and inheret eternal life.

As for what people can do for the poor and the sick, Canyon, ...Rev. Thomas, and as JJ would say, et al...
I see a whole lot more effort expended this holiday season, *especially* in this holiday season... being expended by the likes of you to try and hurt and blame lil' ol' me for your consumerism...
Using the very scene of the birth of your Jesus to *claim political power over minorities,* and act like *you're* the ones oppressed when other religions are brave enough to put our own religious symbols up in the name of multicultural displays... *for you to back over and claim someone's oppressing you for existing...*
You talk a lot about your Jesus, Canyon. But it seems it's people like *me* trying to stop him from turning into a partisan political *idol.*
*By* existing.
I know Canyon would probably get off on it, but recently, this 'Advent' season has turned into a season of fear for people of other religions, while Christian conservatives look for someone to blame for their own consumerism, and failures thereof.
You like to say we're spiritually-scared of your presumptive spiritual 'might,' Canyon, Cal...
No, it's simpler than that. People like the both of you are telling the usually-armed and sexually-displaced element of society that Pagans are to blame for the woes of your own 'sins.'
You are turning even your own Nativity scenes into political pawns, and then calling it a defacing of your idols when someone else participates.
All in the name of your 'Peace.'
I see no peace in these displays.
Maybe you ought to look for some.
You scare us. And not in a spiritual way.
Again, I ask in a Cal Thomas column:
Can we not do this this year?

Canyon:
"I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say."
Actually, Canyon, to refer back to that. Pagans really don't walk around thinking it's a big deal whether or not Jesus was divine... The problem comes when you insist *nothing else* is.
You said it well yourself when you said you are glad your God is not fair... Cause that gives you the power and none of the accountability.. in your own mind.
Guess what doesn't wash in the world outside your head and your group.
But your guy there said you would be known by your fruits.
Best start looking to the crops of 'what you sow' instead of looking for devils to sacrifice to save yourself from the wrath of your *own* devil.
You speak of trying to *appease* your own terrifying God and Devil.
This is not for you to hurt others about.
I think it's about something you missed in your screaming fundamentalism.
Something quieter.
And I think what *really* scares you is that Christianity *don't* own that.
That there's no one you could hurt or control to give you what you seek to gain by behaving as you do, ...making your God out to be a real tyrant in order to justify trying to hurt people.
You've exposed the attitude here countless times.
I only question why you aren't rebuked more in reality.
Or are you?

Only a College Student:
"Human nature" is a term invoked by people to promote their own world view as natural and universal. By the same argument, are you suggesting that not clinging to antiquated views of gods pulling strings is somehow contrary to "human nature"? The only thing I can imagine to be universal is a desire to understand how the world works, and fortunately our understanding has improved dramatically over the last few thousand years.
Even when something "unexplained" happens, the rational mind can still draw on deduction and first principles--that is, we know that the body has an immune system, that there are genes that produce proteins that act to maintain health, and that susceptibility and resistance depend on the particular genetic makeup of the pathogen and the host. With mechanisms at hand for understanding response to disease generally, even if we don't understand the specifics of a given case, why on earth would we suddenly leap to some otherworldly explanatory mechanism for which we have no evidence or first principles?
The worst example of this impulse comes when people believe they or someone they know got better or survived a plane crash "for a reason," implying that the schmoe in the next hospital bed or the next plane seat who didn't survive also perished "for a reason." It is the height of stupidity and arrogance to believe that the unfortunate die or suffer because they are less deserving. You cannot hold one belief without the other.
I did not mean to say that religion is not explainable, but rather that it has no explanatory power. I'm not sure what you mean by belief in the unproven. Rational minds accept that many things are unproven and may even be unprovable with our current technology, but they do not leap to the conclusion that because the answer is presently unknown it must have an otherworldly solution. As an example, the consequences of selective breeding--artificial selection for favorable traits--were known for centuries before we had the technology and the theory to understand its genetic basis. At one time some might have thought that immaterial spirits were transmitted between parent and offspring. But of course we now know, only through advances in technology and theory, that genes are the heritable units. We have absolutely no basis for thinking that other material effects that currently seem a mystery will have anything other than material causes.
Finally, you say "rather a lot of scientists believe in some religion. Go figure. All it means is that the two are compatible, even if the combination makes little sense." Actually this observation says nothing about whether the two are compatible. People are contradictory and irrational in many aspects of life. Perfectly reasonable people will refuse to walk under a ladder and tremble at the thought of breaking a mirror. Many ideas that conflict with our actual experience of the world become ingrained in us at an early age, and are hard to shake. The power of familial religious persuasion is one of them--and I have to say that you sound like a prime example, as this is the best explanation we have for why most people on the planet believe more or less in what their parents believed.
In any case, I admire your willingness to continue questioning.

There must be two columnists named Cal Thomas. The columnist just quoted talks about “the temporal benefit of doing good to a fellow human being.” The other Cal Thomas has been a dogged supporter of a war of choice in Iraq and of the practice of torturing those who may be captured in some vague “war on terrorism.” The latter Cal Thomas does not quibble about the definition of torture; he, instead, says the U.S. government should engage in torture, just as the actors in the television show "24" are famous for doing. He has actually advocated using that show as a template for our foreign policy.
The first Mr. Thomas must be a strong supporter of Christian teachings – not least because he says he is. The latter Thomas advocates the war and torture against which Jesus spoke. This is far too confusing for a secular person to understand.

Rafael:
Religion is certainly not explainable or justifiable, as you say. Having faith in something completely supernatural is not necessarily rationale, but it is a component of human nature to believe/hope that there s something out there with more control over outcomes than we have. Sometimes the unexplained happens (someone very ill suddenly getting better, etc.) and we like to think there is a reason for all this. I believe in it for some reason, but I also question my belief a lot.
However...my parents are religious people and also in the life sciences. They believe in the unproven and also believe that when someone gets sick, it's because they have a virus, not because God decided to smite them. They believe in evolution and that the solar system was created over billions of years, not that God created the world in 6 days. The incompatibility between ration and religion is clear. What the Canyons of the world do is they make excuses FOR religion AGAINST science. Others, who know that religion is rather irrational but believe in it anyway (and I do believe that it is human nature, and we should accept human nature for all its craziness), make arguments FOR science DESPITE their belief in religion.
That probably made very little sense, but it is what I meant by being horrified that people feel a need to choose only religion over science (I can, obviously, understand why some choose only science over religion). Incidentally, I have done a bit of work in great labs with prestigious scientists (including a Nobel Prize winner), and rather a lot of scientists believe in some religion. Go figure. All it means is that the two are compatible, even if the combination makes little sense. No one's beliefs need to directly mirror a pastor's--I think people forget that everyone should have their own set of beliefs that probably match up with no one else's.

THE WORST WAY OF CALLING NAME TO THE ALMIGHTY CREATOR:
When Christians say that Jesus(A.S) was BEGOTTEN and not MADE like Adam (A.S) or like all other creatures or creations?
What are you insinuating??? That God Almighty him self came down to perform the lowest form of animal act like any dog, donkey or monkey,i.e., sexual reproduction?
And on top of it Jesus(A.S) was His begotten son not ligitimate!!!!!!!!!!1
THAT IS THE WORST KIND OF ABUSE AND NAMING DIRECTED TOWARDS THE GOD ALMIGHTY!!
Well down you so called CHRISTIAN believers??
You are getting your rewards in this world and will definitely get infinitely here after!!!!!!

Don't mind Canyon. He thinks that because he says things they must be true.
You didn't say what you find horrifying. Whether or not science and religion are compatible depends on what you mean by religion. If your notion of religion includes the idea that there are supernatural tweaks to the relationship between cause and effect, then the two are wholly incompatible. Without assuming that material effects (which you can measure) can be explained by material causes (which you can control through experimentation or comparative observation), you simply can't do science.
On the other hand, if your notion of religion does not include supernatural causes, then I'm not sure what the point is. Religion becomes useless for understanding anything, as we live in and know only of a material world. For me, the idea that they are compatible emerges from fuzzy, wishful thinking.
You are right, though, about science having the best explanations for death, both proximate (through an understanding of the physiological underpinnings of senescence) and ultimate (through an understanding of the evolutionary processes that lead to senescence).

I have been fully enjoying this thread--rather amusing and entertaining.
One of Canyon Shearer's lines stood out:
"Christianity is still the only religion which has any clue what-so-ever why death happens."
Many eastern religions see death as completely natural and a part of the "circle of life" (if you excuse my use of the cliche). I see no problem with this. In fact, this view is far more rational than the Christian view that death happens for a particular reason and that there is further judgment after death. Moreover, this view is a bit more compatible with another set of values that can explain death--science. That is to say, at least the two do not directly clash.
I believe in God (not the Christian God), and I respect most religions...and the view that science and religion have to be mutually exclusive is horrifying to me.

2-the very first disease of the soul is to separate the soul from the creator of the soul.
3-those who they cling their soul on false idols like the mytho and delusion so called son of god the savior of mankind are the same idolators of ignorance era where they used to worship images and stones ,another regressionism indeed.

Many emergent churches and Christian organizations who are involved in the ’social gospel’ movement have been actively campaigning for AIDS prevention in other countries. While much has been said about some of these organizations and their lack of actually sharing the gospel in the process, that is not the criticism here.
Moreover, I am not saying that Christians should not be concerned about this epidemic either. I think this is definately a problem and a mission field that we should be concerned about and address. In fact, one organization that I think is very good is ZOE (Zimbabwe Orphans Endeavor), which is run by Greg Jenks. I’ve met Greg at a Methodist Conference and a Promisekeepers event and am very impressed by what he is doing. That is not the criticism here either.
But one thing that I do believe is up for debate is, not should we be helping or not, but what help actually works?
Liberals want to give them drugs and condoms, whereas conservatives want to give them the gospel, thereby addressing the behavior that contributes to the spread of the disease. Many liberals can’t address the behavior, because in our own country they promote the agenda that anyone’s sexual behavior should not be criticized, and that all lifestyles should be confirmed as normal and natural expressions. So they can’t turn around and go to Africa and tell them to quit the behaviors that they endorse at home.
This news brief from FRC (based on this Washington Post article) is an interesting report from a pragmatic sense, about which method is working and which is not. :
=====================
Congress Should Mind Their A’s and B’s on AIDS Prevention
Improved access to antiretroviral drugs in recent years has led to an increasing emphasis on treatment over prevention as the principal way of attacking the AIDS epidemic in Africa. But the Washington Post reported yesterday that however effective these drugs may be for individual patients, they are not stopping the spread of the disease overall. The Post article reported that “among African countries with the most serious AIDS epidemics, the only one to report a recent drop in HIV rates is Zimbabwe, which has one of the region’s smallest treatment programs.” The problem, according to one South African AIDS expert, is that (as the Post describes it), “using antiretrovirals to fight an AIDS epidemic is akin to using chemotherapy and surgery to fight lung cancer. It would cost less, and save many more lives, to find some way to curb smoking.” Or, in the case of AIDS, to curb practices like having multiple sex partners. That’s exactly what the “abstinence” and “being faithful” (AB) components of President Bush’s AIDS relief plan (called PEPFAR) target. Currently, 20% of the plan’s funding is designated for prevention (80% goes for treatment) and only a third of that 20% is reserved for the “AB” approach. Yet incredibly, Democrats in Congress want to give AIDS bureaucrats a license to slash even that modest commitment. Tell your Congressman to support a continued firm commitment to abstinence and fidelity in AIDS relief.”
====================
Christians should be involved in helping in this epidemic, but they should stop and consider what type of “help” their money and efforts are going to. Does your church’s mission fund that supports AIDS in Africa programs, simply throw just drugs and condoms at the problem, or does it focus on the gospel and regeneration, and education of a Biblical worldview on sexuality as well?

You've worked out quite a (contradictory) system for yourself. If you are in the midst of "preferring your sin" at the moment you die, you'll still be saved because when you're dead you can still say you didn't mean it?
It's a wonder that people who operate under such childlike rules about boundaries for the reward and punishment for their behavior can function on a daily basis.

Man. Most of the people who posted on this thread are obviously real True Believers. The holiest of the Holy Rollers. What the rest of us refer to as wing nuts. After regular exposure to the other discussions in On Faith--where I certainly encounter people who don't agree with me--I find this one chilling. To think there are so many people whose entire universe of thought is shaped (warped?) through the prism of sin, hell, redemption, salvation, wickedness, grace, etc., etc. This is like a fundie Sunday School on steroids. If the discussion had degenerated into how many angels dance on the head of a pin, I would not have been surprised.
Do any of you remember that this all began with a commentary by Cal Thomas about fighting poverty and disease and God’s love for the physical body? Gee, I thought ol’ Cal had come down from his next-to-God throne and was delivering a call for Congress to override George Bush’s veto of the child health care bill. Guess I was mistaken.

>>> "A long and wicked life followed by five minutes of perfect grace gets you into Heaven. An equally long life of decent living and good works followed by one outburst of taking the name of the Lord in vain - then have a heart attack at that moment and be damned for eternity. Is that the system?" ~ Robert A. Heinlein
No. Its not the system. It may be what you think Christianity to be, but its not Christianity.
Salvation does not depend upon your being faultless at the moment of death. It depends on all of your faults having been paid for by Jesus (and your accepting that payment). I have sinned many times since I was saved. God has been working in my life, changing my heart through love and discipline, but always for my good. On my part I have spent much time rebelling, and ignoring God, but God has a way of calling me back to him.
If I did some awful sin and died in the midst of it, I would still be saved. I would have to answer for that sin and any sin that I hadn't already asked God to forgive. All men will face a judgment, some to eternal life and some to eternal damnation. I will face mine and I would like to have already spent my time with God for any of my sins, but if that is not the case God will deal with this as He always has, by reminding me that He has something better for me than this sin that I harbor.
Is there anyway to lose this salvation. As I read the scripture, yes. I can ultimately turn my back on Him, preferring my sin to His grace, fatally ignoring the Holy Spirit that has always beckoned me before.

Ah-ha, here is this thread. I thought that a new question was posted identical to the old one, I didn't see Cal Thomas' post until now.
CCNotL, we've previously had this discussion remember? You lost; a tiny dissenting group of gnostics are as heretical and wrong today as they were in the 300's.
Gandalf, I've read the Koran three times, the Bhagavad Gita once, the Torah about half-dozen times, the Talmud once, the iChing, the Tao-Te-Ching, the origin of species...among many other commentaries...but I don't need to read all of these to know that every other religion is false. I don't have to look at every other religion when the one that has proven itself to be true says, "I am THE way, THE truth, and THE life." It doesn't say, "I am a way."
Every other religion is the broad path to destruction. Duckphup and Lepidotmatrix have convinced themselves that they know things about Christianity, but as you can tell from their posts, they have no clue.
Every religion in the world is works-based, check them, every single one........EXCEPT Christianity. You can be the most holy Christian or the most heathen Christian, but if you're saved by the atoning work of Christ on the cross, then you are going to Heaven.
Repent and believe the Gospel.

Well... that's not quite true. Having been brought up (brainwashed and indoctrinated) as a Christian, I knew quite a lot about it. Then, I learned how to think properly, and my BS alarm became fully functional. Christianity... and religious belief in general... cannot survive the attention of a rational mind, equipped with a fully functional BS alarm. Since then... I have made an in-depth study of Christianity, as well as most of the world's mainstream religions... and quite a few of the not-so-mainstream, as well.
It's a shame that your genetic line does not come eqipped with the critical-thinking gene.

I know exactly what Christianity is about, which is why I cannot practice it as a religion. Nonetheless, Jesus' teachings on things like compassion for the less fortunate (which is in line with the topic question) do have value for me, along with other teachers' words (Gautama and Gandhi, for example) on the same subject.

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: 'I'm ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don't accept His claim to be God.' That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg - or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son Of God; or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at his feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.

I was raised Christian, and I know exactly what it is about your religion that caused me to reject it. I've read your book, still own a copy in fact (as well as a copy of the Qu'ran, the Gita, the Tao Te Ching, The Spiral Dance, the Goseigen, the Urantia Book), and like every other book, religious or secular, it has some wisdom and some nonsense.
Your Jesus was a decent enough fellow, and he had a lot of good ideas about how to live - share your food with the hungry, your clothing with the naked, your home with the homeless, treat others the way you'd like to be treated. I just don't believe that he was any more or any less divine than anyone else.
Your Moses had some good ideas too - don't steal, don't lie, don't murder, be loyal to your spouse, be respectful to your elders, set time aside to recharge your spirit. But I don't see those ideas as exclusive to any one god.

CCnotL,
I've read more of those than I'd like to admit. What a waste of time. Have you ever considered that most of the authors are jokes outside of their heretical circles?
Please make absolutely certain that your grasping argument will stand up on Judgment Day, because you and I know it won't. Have you ever read, "The Way of the Master" or "The Bondage of the Will" or "Mere Christianity", these are books written by people who actually understand the Bible and don't hate God with a vengeance.
Lepidotmatrix,
I know I've already asked this, but maybe you'll pay attention this time. Do you consider yourself to be a good person?
http://needGod.com
You know there is a God, pretending that your arguments are anywhere near reasonable to refute such overwhelming evidence is called, "Suppressing the truth in unrighteousness." It's a damnable sin.
While I certainly do not speak for all christians (see the list of heretics that our blissfully-captured concerned friend posted), I do speak from the Bible.
You might consider reading it some day and actually knowing what it says so you can either refute or believe its message from an informed standpoint. Start with the Gospel of John, verse 1.

Not at all, dear boy. I have no evidence either for or against your god - he simply does not make sense to me, therefore I find it ompossible to believe in his existence, and by extension, the dogma attached to him.
Since I don't believe he exists, it is impossible for me to hate him. Tell me, do you hate invisible pink unicorns?
If God as you percieve him does, in fact, exist, then he is, IMO, capricious at best, and sadistic at worst, and I cannot worship such a creature.
I am human - a little better person than some, a little worse person than others. Perfect? Far from it. I never claimed to be any such thing. I'm doing the best I can to be a good person.
Fortuantely, you do not speak for all Christians, and your concept of the Divine is not universal among Christians.

Mathew 9:11-13 And when the Pharisees saw this, they said to his disciples, "Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and sinners?" But when he heard it, he said, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. Go and learn what this means, ‘I desire mercy, and not sacrifice.’ For I came not to call the righteous, but sinners."

There is a common theme here. As CCnotL has proven so admirably, people will believe anything if it's not the Bible.
Lepidotmatrix has no evidence against God, she merely hates Him and feels He is unfair, because she thinks she is the greatest thing since sliced bread and if anyone deserves Heaven, it's her. I for one am glad that God is unfair, or else we would all be burning in Hell right now.
I am sorry to see how far this conversation has gone astray from the question. Christianity is still the only religion which has any clue what-so-ever why death happens. This should be your first clue that this is the veracious world-view.
Duckphup can't even tell the difference between Christ and Santa Claus...whether both are real or imagined, there is a HUGE difference between them. How can you speak against a religion you know nothing about?
For the unbelievers who are denying Christianity based on a choice...if you're going to Hell, at least know that the Bible says you can't choose Christ, you can't accept Christ into your heart, you can't make Him your Lord and Saviour. You can repent, or you can perish, these are your only two options.
To the Christians who posted and/or are reading, keep up the good fight. To the heathens reading, please reread my 2nd post (the proof-read one), and make sure you at least know what Christianity teaches before you reject it, because as of now, not a single unbeliever has posted who has any idea what the Bible teaches about salvation.
Imagine it is 1957 and we've just discovered/perfected the vaccine for polio. I offer it to you, but you deny it because you say, "No, I have it on good authority that it's made of dog poo!" You've made up a reason to reject the cure based on a lie, and you have no idea how the vaccine actually works.
This ignorance will kill you, eternally.

Arggghhh... I am not accustomed to having to digest drooling stupidity in such large doses.
Canyon Shearer wrote (DECEMBER 5, 2007 9:35 AM): "Sin is the same way, you may think that blasphemy is a victimless crime, because everytime you do so, you weren't stricten dead. Be assured that you are storing up wrath for yourself on the Day of Judgment. Cancer and AIDS and old age are your stipends until your full pay-check is issues on the day of your death, these are to remind you that you do have a sin-account which is quickly nearing maturity and pay-out."
But that would be irrelevant, wouldn't it? You believe that a cosmic Jewish zombie, who is his own father, can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was tricked by a malvolent entity (disguised a talking snake... with legs) into eating a piece of fruit from a magical tree... (etc.)... and that there is something horribly wrong with people who ARE NOT so gullible and droolingly stupid as to believe such outrageously ridiculous codswallop.
If you do NOT 'believe', and you do NOT telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil force from your soul, the evil force remains, and you are doomed to an eternity of unspeakable torture. If you DO 'believe', and you DO telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master... sincerely... then you are spared this fate of eternal torture and suffering, and you get to live in your own personal mansion in a magical fairy-land with streets paved in gold... forever... UNLESS you sin again, in which case you are AGAIN doomed to spend eternity in torture and suffering. Any sin will do... even the littlest one. Having a prurient thought while gazing upon a pretty woman will earn you the same penalty as being responsible for the torture and murder of millions of human beings.
But Jesus loves you... so he really doesn't WANT to condemn you to an eternity of torture and suffering. SO, it you do NOT 'believe', and you do NOT telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master...OR... if do so, an subsequently stray... well, to bad... it's your own danged fault. But... He LOVES you.
Canyon Shearer wrote: "It is appointed for a man once to die, and then the judgment. On that day you will stand before the Judge, naked in your shame, the book of your conscience open wide, this book has recorded every transgression, every sin done in darkness or in light. How will you plead? I didn't know? Your conscience has screamed out at your every time you broke God's law, if it is not screaming now, it is because you have seared and dulled this sensitive instrument. But be assured, God has a record of every time you have disobeyed your parents, worshipped money, trusted science to save you from eternity, stolen anything, regardless of cost, and coveted after wealth, health, or godhood."
This sounds remarkably like Santa Claus...
He's making a list
He's checking it twice
He's gonna find out
Who's naughty and nice...
So... who cares if this invisible, magical, supernatural sky-fairy has a book in which is recorded "...every transgression, every sin done in darkness or in light?" It only takes ONE transgression to earn an eternity of suffering, torture and torment. So... what is the divine purpose here?... to embarrass you, and make you FEEL BAD before turning you over to worms that never die and fang-toothed demons who will roast your entrails on sticks for eternity?
By the way... whose job is it to maintain this 'book' of transgressions?... elves? And is there just one big book, that contains the transgressions of all humanity?... or does everybody get their own book? Did they use hand written books, made of parchment, before Gutenberg died and went to heaven? Did things get easier after Simon and Schuster joined up?
Canyon Shearer wrote: "Trust God when He says that all liars will have their place in the Lake of Fire, but not just liars, but fornicators, adulterers, murderers, the faithless, and the idolaters. Rapists and serial-killers have earned death, but so have thieves and blasphemers. They are condemned to the Hell, a place of wailing and gnashing of teeth, where the worm dieth not, and the fire burns but does not consume, a place of utter darkness, devoid of love in any form. The inhabitants beg for a single drop of water, but none will ever come. This is the wages of sin, the place of eternal torment."
Heinlein
Canyon Shearer wrote: "But here is the reprieve. Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, was born of a virgin 2000 years ago. He lived a perfect sinless life where He showed His authority over sickness and death by raising Lazarus and others. He willingly accepted the wages you had earned and they were poured out upon Him in the most heinous of ways."
"Christ took your place, God exacted His fine on His only begotten Son, and it pleased Him to do it, because by Christ's stripes we are healed. In Christ's death on the cross, our wages are paid out, our fine is satisfied."
"God demands that to receive this gift of life purchased at such a price, you must repent of your sins, turn from them, apologize for them, call out for forgiveness, and place your trust in Jesus Christ to save you from this punishment which you deserved."
OK... to start with, we have this wonderful, loving, capricious, vengeful, murderous, genocidal, caring, compassionate, mass-murdering, forgiving, jealous, loving... (did I already say loving?)... torturing, invisible, magical, all-powerful, supernatural sky-faerie (god) who poofed the universe, the world, plants and critters into existence, and fabricated humans from a dust bunny and a rib... while here in the REAL world (just outside the 'gates' of the Garden where all this was going on), the Mesopotamians were making beer.
Further adventures of this invisible, magical, all-powerful, supernatural sky-faerie... the diety of the Abrahamic death-cults of desert monotheism... plainly show that was often 'appeased' by blood sacrifice. It is well documented (in the bible) that he thoroughly enjoyed the aroma of a good barbecue... and that a generous serving of blood COULD get him to change his mind... or, at least, to temporariiy desist from slaughtering people by the thousands in one of his frequent piques of annoyance or all-too-familiar hissy-fits and apoplexy.
So... this invisible, magical sky-fairy subsequently arranged for his son/self to die on the cross... in a gruesome public spectacle of blood sacrifice... having HIMSELF killed... to APPEASE HIMSELF... and by the shedding of his blood, forgiveness and salvation from the agony of eternal suffering, torment and torment... orchestrated by HIMSELF... would be purchased... FROM HIMSELF. All because a rib-woman was tricked by a malvolent entity (disguised a talking snake... with legs) into eating a piece of fruit from a magical tree... (etc.)... oh, never mind.
Well... THAT makes sense!... (NOT).
The part that I can't figure out is why you are such an enthusiastic advocate of this unconscionable 1,700 year-old criminal conspiracy of mental manipulation and fear-based scheme of fraud and extortion. Are you just an extremely gullible dupe?... or or are you one of the active criminal conspirators?
(I can see where that last sentence might cause some to accuse me of setting up a 'false dichotomy'... but I really do not see any viable alternatives that might reside between those two extremes.)

I remember reading recently that a group of doctors or scientists concluded that children begin to manipulate their surroundings/parents as early as six-months of age. As a father of twin girls under the age of two, I chuckled at first. And then I thought about it further.
I can still recall one of the girls trying to open a kitchen cabinet that was off limits. Granted, she was closer to 12 months instead of 6, but the point remains. The first time she did it, I simply told her "no" and she pulled her hand back. Minutes later, the same process repeated itself, except for the fact that I also "flicked" her hand. Later, she again reached for the cabinet, but this time, she stopped herself short and turned to look at me. It became obvious to me that she was testing her boundaries and challenging my authority.
Did she deserve death? Of course not, that would be absurd. But let's not try and kid ourselves that some light goes on when we hit puberty and we become "sinners". Our self-centered attitude starts at birth and is shaped and nurtured by everything that goes on around us. We learn at a very early age that "truth" is relative, even if we don't fully grasp that concept until we're plunged into liberal, left-wing colleges and universities.
In this day and age,

Lepidopteryx,
Youre either twisting or missing the point.
'...certain sins will affect generations down the line...' means just that.
If one abuses drugs when carrying a child, or the father is a drug addict...that child is affected. Period. No one said anything about it being the childs fault. Unbelieveable.
Scripture states the obvious. Stated it a long time ago too. Scoffers discount it. Its still there. It still happens.
Why? 'cause the family of man still doesnt get it.

Your scripture, not mine. I believe that we each are responsible for our own actions and the consequences of those actions. My child is not held responsible for my misdeeds, any more than I am held responsible for the misdeeds of my ancestors.
If I were to take your genesis story literally, then your god would hold me personally responsible for the disobedience of the first people who ever existed - an event that happened long before I ever existed. Sorry, but I refuse to take the blame for an event that had nothing to do with me.

Scripture states that certain sins will affect of generations down the line. Sin is mans transgression of laws meant for our good. It is mankind punishing themselves. Since you seem to not believe in a creator God, then it should make sense to you that we have basically mapped our own way and reap the consequences, however and whatever they may be. That has been mankinds 'request' of God overall thru the ages...to 'let us be'. For now, He is letting us be. All for a purpose...just as we may have to do from time to time with our own children...for lessons to be learned.

For someone to imput a particular 'sin' by an unborn human being is nothing short of ludicrous and an attempt of presenting a weak and baseless point against the creator of the universe.
Any stillborn baby or one that is affected by AIDs or cancer will still have a chance to live in God's kingdom...when Jesus Christ returns to this earth and all things are made whole again.
For now, mankind suffers mankinds own ills apart from God, as he (man) has chosen for himself to be apart from.

As a matter of fact, I have a 17-year-old daughter who is one of the many joys in my life.
Babies learn about their surroundings by reaching, touching, and even mouthing objects. And they don't like being told "No" any more than you or I do. They also frequently don't understand the reasonthey're bing told "No." Your friend's baby didn't know that he couldn't hae the watch because it was an expensive item that he would ruin by putting it in his mouth, that it belonged to someone else, or that it had small parts that could choke him if he swallowed them.
Babies have limited means of communication. Couple that with the lack of understanding, and you have a recipe for a tantrum. I seriously doubt that your friend's child wanted to steal his watch - I doubt that the child understood the concept of theft. I doubt that he was covetous of it - babies don't have that concept yet either. It was shiny and he wanted to play with it because it caught his eye. Likewise, I doubt that he meant harm to his father - he was frustrated and was expresing it the only way he could. That doesn't mean that tantrums are acceptable - children must be taught acceptable ways of expressing their emotions. But to call the actions of your friend's baby "sin" is reaching.
As for your friend's certainty taht his child would have torn his arm off and left him in a pool of blood, I suggest that he stop watching movies like "The Omen" and "The Exorcist" - he apparently doesn't understand that they're fiction.

Canyon: If you think the infant in your story was a covetous malicious sinner, I worry for you. children are fascinated with shiny things and want to play with them, and have no notion of ownership or personal integrity.
On all these posts over the past several months, the hardest part of christianity to swallow, for me at least, has seldom been mentioned. Original Sin. We are to believe that the original two beings with accountable souls (let's just leave out the evolution issue for the moment) did something so heinous that the God who gave them the souls decided that none of their descendants could reach the heaven he had prepared for them for several thousand years, until he was in the right frame of mind to forgive them and then had to send his son to make up for it, but only for those who believe the son's story that he had to come to make up for a sin no one hearing him committed. That activist a god is a bit much. Without original sin, christianity makes no sense whatever.
but to the question at hand, of course religious organizations are suited to facilitating progress on social ills. not only are they a homogenous collection of similarly motivated people, and believers in a creed that certainly includes attention to the least among us, they are organized institutions with leadership in place to direct collective efforts. only government is any bigger or better funded. depending on the particular task at hand, one or the other is better equipped.
frankly, I am surprised that the christian on these posts has the pessimistic view, and the atheist is giving churches their due.
I have actually attended a service at Saddleback, by the way, as I married a parishioner. Absolutely wonderful people, Rick Warren is a wonderful man, and I am sure they did great work.

I would guess from your story that your friend has done a lousy job of raising his son. At the point where, as you say, his son would sooner kill him than not get the watch, the behavior patterns have already been reinforced. Good luck to your friend with his fatherhood project.
On the other hand, you are correct in saying that living things come into the world with selfish intentions. Selfish beings tend to propogate themselves better, which leads to more of their selfish-tending behaviors in future generations. You've presented a great example of the evolutionary argument for why individuals tend to seek more resources for themselves than even for close relatives. This idea works not just for humans, but for all living things that have evolved by a common set of first principles.
On the other hand, by your argument, all living things must be sinners too because they are all selfish from birth. These are your best arguments?

I guess you're not paying attention after all. What a shame.
Lepidopteryx,
You must not have or have never seen any children.
Consider this true story. My friend was holding his eighteen month old son. His son noticed my friend's shiny watch and reached out for it. My friend said, "No" and pushed his hand away. The son reached back for the watch, and got a tap on the hand, "No." He reached back for the watch and my friend pushed his hand away and said, "No!" At this point the eighteen month old lost it...screaming, flailing his arms. He soon directed his attention to my friend's face, swinging his arms with full intent to hit his father.
My friend said there is no doubt in his mind, if this child had the physical strength, that he would have torn his arm off, taken the watch, and left him in a pool of blood.
No one teaches a child a to covet, to steal, or to lie, yet they come from the womb with these traits. The human race is totally depraved, if you don't believe so, you've deceived yourself in order to make yourself feel better about the wrath to come.
God doesn't kill babies, just like he doesn't kill animals. The fact that sin causes the death of babies, and other portions of God's creation should be a small indicator of just why God hates sin and sinners so much.
These are your best arguments? Your excuses will not hold up on Judgment Day.

"Seems to me, from the time a person can crawl, that he or she is screwed."
That's one of the things I never could reconcile either. How can a child from the moment of its birth (some would even say while still in utero), be sinful or evil? Both terms imply willful malice, which babies are simply not capable of.
Canyon:
"God cannot kill without cause or provocation, therefore when people are stricten dead, such as Uzzah in 1 Chronicles 13, we can only assume God was provoked through sin."
So what sin did stillborn babies commit?
"Cancer and AIDS and old age are your stipends until your full pay-check is issues on the day of your death, these are to remind you that you do have a sin-account which is quickly nearing maturity and pay-out."
Children, even infants have been diagnosed with cancers and HIV/AIDS. Exactly what sins could they possibly have committed in their short lives that would warrant such a punishment?
I'm glad that at least Cal didn't do what one of the televangelists (I forget which one - after a while, they all look and sound alike) did a while back. He made the comment that there was really no point in giving money to relief organizations that were not church-based, because if you gave a person food but didn't give them Jesus, all you were doing was sending them to Hell with a full stomach.

That GoodPerson Test is a fallacy. According to that, nobody is going to heaven. Not even you. I'd find another way in if I were you.
Heck, if I were to look at it in a certain way, we brake the Ten Commandments from the time of infancy. A child knows nothing of God. A child is selfish, and jealous. Seems to me, from the time a person can crawl, that he or she is screwed.
What a great religion! Can you sense the sarcasm?

You say: "The Bible is the only religious book, including anything from the 'atheist' realm, which gives an adequate and all-encompassing answer to the perplexing question, "Where does death come from?"
What books from any other religion have you read to make this categorical statement?

The problem with describing someone as having a good soul...is that it is the antithesis of reality.
"There is none good, no, not one." - Psalm 53:3
Russell, do you consider yourself to be a good person? Wanna find out?

Excellent question. Million bucks for an eye?
My eyes suck dude. I plan on having laser surgery. But sure, I'll go for a glass eye. That hollow behind the glass will be a perfect hiding spot. Plus it'll entertain my grandkids, if I ever have any in the next 20 years.
We have gone over this before. I doubt the eyes are the window to the soul. How do you know? Maybe the soul is non existent. Maybe it is a word we give to describe our inner energy. Remember, some of the people who were described as having a good soul and being a great person turned out to be a cold blooded killer.
The eyes don't let another person see the soul. If anything, they hide the soul. The soul is what radiates off of you when other people are around. It's what makes you stand out.
Oh, and maybe as a cool trick, I can use the hollow from the eye to pop open beer bottles. What do ya think?

Russell...I'm glad you find fault, it proves you're paying attention. Make sure you find fault because it's wrong, and not just because you WANT it to be wrong.
As you know, you have a lot riding on your wager.
You know when we finally get together for that beer, I'm going to offer you $1,000,000 for one of your eyes for a science experiment I am doing. Don't worry, I will replace it with a glass eye that looks exactly like the old one, it just won't "look" like the old one.
How about $100,000,000 for both eyes? My experiment will go considerably better with a matched set.
Your eyes are merely the windows to your soul, how much more is your soul worth?

Mr. Thomas
This was a surprisingly evangelical reponse for On-Faith, it was nice to read something that didn't try to substitute the worldly answer for a religious question.
I'd like to do a little exposition on James 1:14-15:
"Each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death."
James is clear that we have no justification in the age old excuse, "The Devil made me do it!" Each person is condemned by his own desire, his own lusts, and the blame is placed firmly upon the transgressor.
Desire is the first step towards death. The Bible is the only religious book, including anything from the 'atheist' presses, which gives an adequate and all-encompassing answer to the perplexing question, "Where does death come from?" James tells us that sin brings forth death, Paul said, "The wages of sin is death." and "Sin came into the world through one man, and death through sin, and so death spread to all men because all sinned."
The answer then to the question, can the world's social and physical ills be cured by the church, is, absolutely not. While there is sin in the world, death will follow. Science has been working on AIDS, Cancer, Syphilus, and Viral Nasopharyngitis for a long time now, and none of these has been cured or will be cured by natural works or science.
James says that desire is the first step towards sin. The main desire, which births all other sins, is self-centeredness, aka pride. "I will not worship that God, I will worship a God in my image and of my making." (John Piper) The God of the Universe is perfectly holy and uses His holyness as the standard of righteousness that we will all be judged against. He gives us a textual representation of Himself in the 10 Commandments.
God cannot lie, it is against His nature and thus when He says, "All liars will have their place in the Lake of Fire", we can trust Him to be telling the truth.
God cannot kill without cause or provocation, therefore when people are stricten dead, such as Uzzah in 1 Chronicles 13, we can only assume God was provoked through sin. Hatred without justification will be judged as murder, Jesus tells us in Matthew 5:21.
God's name is holy and perfect above all other names. We declare our hatred and animosity towards Him when we use His name in place of a four letter filth word. Be assured that God will not hold Him guiltless that takes His name in vain.
For a little while, the church was wondering if there may be life on other planets, why should this planet be special? The answer is found in the Seventh Commandment, God is incapable of adultery, and the church is known as Christ's bride, therefore there are no other churches on other planets. Jesus told us, "You've heard it said of old, thou shalt not commit adultery, but I say to you, whosoever looks upon a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart." Invariably, when a discussion on AIDS comes up, the reader thinks of homosexuality. Same-sex marriage issues aside, sex outside of marriage is a devious sin, when you sin against your spouse, whether that spouse is yours currently, or will be in the future, you are sinning against God.
The wages of sin is death. I am paid on a monthly basis, I work all of December, but am not paid until January 1st. That doesn't mean that I don't get paid for December 5th, only that the wages I am amassing will be paid out for me in the future.
Sin is the same way, you may think that blasphemy is a victimless crime, because everytime you've done so, you weren't stricten dead. Be assured that you are storing up wrath for yourself on the Day of Judgment. Cancer and AIDS and old age are your stipends until your full pay-check is issued on the day of your death, these are to remind you that you do have a sin-account which is quickly nearing maturity and pay-out.
It is appointed for a man once to die, and then the judgment. But be assured, God has a record of every time you have disobeyed your parents, worshipped money, trusted science to save you from eternity, stolen anything, regardless of cost, and coveted after wealth, health, or godhood.
Trust God when He says that all liars will have their place in the Lake of Fire, but not just liars, but fornicators, adulterers, murderers, the faithless, and the idolaters. Rapists and serial-killers have earned death, but so have thieves and blasphemers. They are condemned to Hell, a place of wailing and gnashing of teeth, where the worm dieth not, and the fire burns but does not consume, a place of utter darkness, devoid of love in any form. The inhabitants beg for a single drop of water, but none will ever come. This is the wages of sin, the place of eternal torment.
But here is the reprieve. Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, was born of a virgin 2000 years ago. He lived a perfect sinless life where He showed His authority over sickness and death by raising Lazarus and others. He willingly accepted the wages you had earned and they were poured out upon Him in the most heinous of ways. Mel Gibson attempted to show how badly Christ was beaten, but his version was rated G compared to what Isaiah 52:14 describes:
"His appearance was so marred, beyond human semblance."
Christ took your place, God exacted His fine on His only begotten Son, and it pleased Him to do it, because by Christ's stripes we are healed. In Christ's death on the cross, our wages are paid out, our fine is satisfied.
God demands that to receive this gift of life purchased at such a price, you must repent of your sins, turn from them, apologize for them, call out for forgiveness, and place your trust in Jesus Christ to save you from this punishment which you deserved.
God will forgive you, not because He is a whimsical or unjust Judge, but because the requirements for your release are fulfilled in Christ's payment and your repentance. You will know you are forgiven because your sinful heart will be replaced with a heart that thirsts after righteousness, and you will be born of the Spirit into the family of God.
Even better news, still, on the third day after Christ's atoning death, He rose from the grave and defeated the effects of sin. Death has lost its sting, to be absent from this body is to be present with the Lord.
Your flesh will still die, but your soul will live for eternity. You will be resurrected in Heaven with an imperishable body, one that knows no sin and will never be ravished by death.
This is the eternal cure, the perfect cure. Whether science can extend your life to 125 years old or not, you will still die, the ultimate statistic is that 10 out of 10 die.
On that day, will you face God as your Saviour, or as your Judge?

As far as human nature in college...that is sort of an underlying theme of my Ivy League education. As I said, there remains an obsessions with philosophers of many centuries ago. I have very little patience with Locke's (and others') ideals and really wish that, as you say, college professors did not treat this as essential any "well-rounded" education. I wouldn't call it a systematic goal of my education, but it is certainly ingrained in the college's general education requirements.
