Convenient "Truths"
I just talked to a leading conservative religious leader about this the other day. He believes that the New Testament texts regarding women only apply to the church and not the secular world. I find that line of interpretation very convenient for conservative churches, and impossible to justify theologically. My guess is that more and more of the daughters of today's religious conservatives will decide to a) abandon their parent's approach to interpreting the Bible, b) decide the "secular" world is a more hospitable place and spend more time there and less in the church, or c) change churches.

BarryFitz:
It may seem that some people think that a female could lead the U.S.A. It is the intention of Yahweh Jehovah that men be in authority over women and this has been in existence since the Garden of Eden. Non-negligent people will continue this dynamicism if they are truly non-negligent people. Since the creation of the Office of the Presidency, a woman has never held High Office. It is the intention of Yahweh Jehovah that the woman be the helper of the man.

Maybe that's how your god does things, but it's not how my gods work. I'm not Christian, so I'm not bound by the gender roles set out by Paul.
My husband and I are equal in all respects - we both have jobs that bring in income, we both contribute to the household bills, we both cook, we both do laundry, we both clean, we both do yard work, we take turns being on top in bed.
And he has said on more than one occasion that I should run for public office. Unlike Paul, he isn't afraid of women. In fact, he finds women whose vocabulary is limited to "Yes dear" extremely boring.

For Catholics, it is not a matter of whether women are worthy to serve as priests, because if that were the measure, we would have run out of priests after the Apostles. It is, however, a matter of following Christ's teaching as laid our in Scripture on the sacrament of Holy Orders. Pope John Paul the Great further explained this in his letter ORDINATIO SACERDOTALIS.
It has nothing to do with how the Church view women. The Church has had thousands of women saints, both married and professed, our greatest saint and advocate is a woman, the Blessed Mother Mary. JPII wrote a beautiful letter to women, about women, MULIERIS DIGNITATEM.
Women can and should serve in the Church. There is so much to do for the world that priests need help from both men and women, young and old. But the Sacraments, from which this work of the Church flows, is for men. If you have issue with that... talk to the Big Guy. He made the rules. We just have to follow them.

I'm not sure that I understand the meaning and intent of the claim, "the New Testament texts regarding women only apply to the church and not the secular world." As written, it seems to imply a dualistic morality and a dualistic theology, as if to say that Christian women are inherently different from non-Christian women in their very nature, or that God's intention for non-Christian marriage is fundamentally different from his intention for Christian marriage. Is this what the "leading conservative Christian leader" meant?
This strikes me as a very odd position to take. It also strikes me that none of the three alternatives you have suggested for tomorrow's women make very much sense. Then, again, perhaps I misunderstand you, as well. Here are my thoughts.
a) Does abandoning the approach of their parents to interpreting the bible mean abandoning their specific faith tradition to join another, perhaps similar tradition (like option c), or completely abandoning 2 thousand years of Christian biblical tradition for something else, entirely? Option b) seems to fit quite well with that way of seeing reality. What did you mean?

Folks,
Brian McLaren opines:
"He believes that the New Testament texts regarding women only apply to the church and not the secular world. I find that line of interpretation very convenient for conservative churches, and impossible to justify theologically. "
Catholicism which represents the majority of Christians in this World disagrees with this man's opinion. So does Eastern Orthodoxy. So did most of Protestantism until the past half century or so. Protestantism has only gone over to a female clergy since its inability to attract and hold congregations has become so apparent.
In truth, Catholicism has always had far more opportunity for women religious through its congregations of nuns than Protestantism did until the recent past. Indeed, some of the greatest Catholic saints/religious were nuns such as Theresa of Avila and Catherine of Siena. For hundreds of years, though, the only thing a woman could do in the Protestant Church was to become the parson's wife.

The convenient truth shall keep you free. Slavery is inconvenient. If you make somebody a slave you take away all of their value. Freedom is priceless, so we aren't the prisoners of our own price tags. Make your own luck and make your own love. Just don't try buying it. The harder you work, the more luck you tend to have. Love takes care of the rest, so sweet dreams do come true. Love is a battlefield.

The role of the minister is vastly different from the role of a politician. Our Constitution specifies that government cannot promote religion and the concept of our government came along 2,000 years after theology. So what do you cite theologically that leads you to your conclusion?

I am one of those "daughters" that you speak of in your blog. In my lifetime I have learned that women should not serve as pastors, but over the years I have seen women serve as deacons. Just yesterday, I had the thought that maybe women should not hold leadership positions in church, but could in government. (It was by coincidence that I found your blog.) It does seem to me there is a difference, but I can't explain why that is. I have always learned that women should not hold leadership positions over a man at church. This does not apply outside of church to me, however and I'm thinking it may be because I've always kept the two seperate. I'm just muddling through all of these thoughts. I thought of the old testament and remembered the story of Deborah who was an Old Testament judge. God used her as a leader. I do not recall a woman as pastor in the bible, though. Maybe you remember an instance? At any rate, I have three small women that I am raising and do not want to teach them that they should be stay-at-home mothers and never aspire to be, say, president.

Brian you don't believe that the Bible is to be taken literally. And you've never tried to make a literal interpretation. To you everything is relative and to be taken in context with current culture. You have no credibility in this area for this reason. It is a joke for you to criticize anyone for anything they want to read into the Bible as if you know if they are right or wrong when you have taken a stance that there is no absolute truth in the Bible.
