Bishop Appointments Have Nothing to Do With God

The concept that people are created in the image of God is very intriguing. It implies that people know what God looks like. Besides, God did not create Man alone. God created the whole Universe, including weasels, insects and pigs to name just a few. What if they all claim we were created in the image of God?

The truth is that we are sufficiently arrogant to visualize God as being like us -- one who punishes, who discriminates, who is arrogant, who is ruthless and who is violent. Who we are and what we do on earth or, for that matter, how we do it is not determined by God but by individual human beings. God has no time to determine individual sexual orientation, or the millions of others things we do every day that go contrary to spiritual expectations. God leaves such tomfoolery to imperfect humans like us.

So, the appointment by the Anglican Church of openly Gay priests to become Bishops has nothing to do with God. Because these priests have declared their sexual orientation, society wishes to discriminate against them. But, we appoint, elect, nominate people to all kinds of high positions knowing very little of their true nature. I think all those who courageously came out in the open and confessed to their sexual orientation are more honest and truthful than those of us who hide behind the veneer of lies.

I may be a heterosexual and, therefore, more acceptable to society but I could be a rapist, a pervert, or a million other things and be more respectable and acceptable because I can successfully hide these tendencies from the public. I think if we look deeply, sincerely and truthfully we will find that there are not many in this world who can claim to possess a character that is impeccable and unblemished.

A person of Truth, one at least sincerely trying to be one with it, is certainly imperfect. A killer chanting the name of RAMA can be enlightened even if he starts off wrong. Once we leave behind the baggage of dogmatic religions, those whose core is the book they worship, then we can engage in allowing imperfect humans to help us other imperfect humans on our quest. But if you chose the book, well, you chose the book.

As to the question of homosexuality being imperfect, that is really irrelevant to the one seeking Truth as it is - Tat Sat. To such a person, who would then be honestly religious, and who could then perhaps have a position of authority, the sexuality is the imperfection (hetero or homo). This is a biological signal that is determined by exogenous forces (in the scientific model) or karmic forces (in an endogenous model). Regardless, it represents a prakrit based soma-form manifestation of the base reality. (It is the tree of the knowledge of maya.) But the spiritual quest is to cut down that tree and transcend that attachment. Even in tantric systems the use of sexuality is to transcend the sexuality.

Thus, with a broader spiritual understanding, a priest that is incompletely enlightened can have a sexuality that is either homo or hetero, and can teach others. But if that priest thinks that their sexuality is spiritual, then there is confusion between maya and vidya (true knowledge). The love we share for each other is the vidya, the manifestation is avidya (untruth) as we express it as imperfect media of the divine totality.

But again, if your religion claims that all of sexuality is bad, then the authoritative priests of that religion should abstain from all sexuality. That is the yoga they have chosen.

I like most of it but the following bothers me.

"I think if we look deeply, sincerely and truthfully we will find that there are not many in this world who can claim to possess a character that is impeccable and unblemished."

To be sure, none or few of us are perfect but it would be a little naive to say that we are equally moral or immoral - that would erase the difference between Hitler and Mahatma Gandhi.

The second thing which bothers me is the implication that if we are not perfect we have no right to punish. That also makes no sense.

If we insisted on perfect cops and perfect judges, we would have no law and believe me it would not be nice. Imperfect cops and judges enforce the law, and they are often wrong, but it is still far better than NEVER enforcing the law.

If you said instead that gays have done no wrong and that it is silly (and mean) to punish them for being gay, THEN I will agree.

So, you gave a good conclusion but a bad argument for it.

With all due respects to your grandfather, it is not man that has declared we are made in the image of God, it is God that has revealed that to us. A brief review of the bible would tell you that.

On the other point, I will agree that if a church appoints an openly gay person to a position of leadership, it is an act of man.

That is not to say that an appointment inspired by God is a person that is perfect. It is however, a person that will lead God's people in the way that God wants.
