This Issue Needs Serious Discussion

Ah, new discussion. I am happy at least that I no longer have to read, once again (one may hope!), the endless repetition of this mantra throughout the all the threads.

Putting the Kentucky pastor and the rabbis in the same category, as OnFaith has done, is tantamount to linking the Janjaweed with the National Guard. After all, both are armed.

The problem of Muslim terrorist threats against synagogues, Jews in predominantly Jewish neighborhoods has been going on in New York for four decades. Frankly, people are sick, tired, and disgusted with being targeted.

A few years ago, some people, including rabbis began stating that they intended to defend themselves, and not only during the High Holy Days. They do not want their congregations to be burdened all year with the cost of paying for private security and they don't want to be under siege by police.

The synagogue I occasionally attend declined police protection this year. This resulted in the rabbi meeting with the chief three times before finally being persuaded to give in.

The Congregation, a gentle enough bunch, was not happy from what I hear. Enough is enough as this brilliant young rabbi declared in her email. Jews, like everyone else, have enough problems living day to day without being threatened by Muslim terrorists.

We Jews, cultural and observant, need to organize, as taxpayers. We need to stage demonstrations demanding that those who threaten us be caught, tried, and jailed, if convicted. As this discussion continues within the community, I am hopeful that this will occur. Moreover, interest, after four decades in our deplorable plight is developing among those of other faiths.

Can you imagine what would have occurred if Christian/Catholic churches had been threatened by lunatic, racist, Islamist extremist four decades ago? What the threat have continued all these years? Err, no.

We Jews need rabbis to unite us. When we finally get it together, a few million of us might celebrate the High Holy days in front of City Hall. 2010 would be a good year to begin this new tradition.

It is clear that there are long traditions where soldiering and devotion to one's god(s) had no incongruency at all. If it is true to ones' path then there should be no real issue. At that point, at least in America, it becomes a Second Amendment question and a security question. We are not a society that would do well to go back to earlier days of men carrying weapons openly on the street. Concealed weapons are an issue. Security and the threat of weapons carried in a multi-ethnic society raises many questions. The list goes on...

Although most Christian Protestant factions are quite comfortable with killing, essential Christian Teaching is anything but.

Christians that support war, the death penalty, and killing as a solution to threats should acknowledge that they are not the "fundamentalists" that they call themselves, but are a form of Christianity devolved from the message of Jesus.

They do carry in church, and they will continue to do so, I imagine.

Any fringe believer is already mentally on the edge, I think. Settlers on the West Bank are ready to shoot the next Palestinian they distrust, and that may be all of them. 'Christian' wingnuts carrying weaponry looking to assist Jesus to ascend the New Throne in America, and waiting for the Rapture, give no sense of comfort or security to this country, or to me.

My apologies to you, Rabbi Steinsaltz, but...

Better the rabbis should bring their guns to protect against the depredations of YHWH, one of the most threatening and dangerous personalities in all of human history.
