You mentioned the validity of scriptures. Let’s take a look at NT and specifically at Matthew 24 and Mark 13 where the imminent return of Jesus was supposed to happen in the lifetime of his listeners.

Mat 16 "For the Son of Man is to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay everyone for what has been done. Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his kingdom."

Mat. 24 For as the lightning comes from the east and flashes as far as the west, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Wherever the corpse is, there the vultures will gather. "Immediately after the suffering of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of heaven will be shaken. Then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see 'the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven' with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other. "From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see all these things, you know that he is near, at the very gates.

Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all these things have taken place.

Also, the topic is discussed again in the book of Mark; it is a known fact that whoever wrote the book of Matthew borrowed heavily from the book of Mark.

But, now, WHERE IS HE? ALMOST TWO THOUSAND YEARS HAVE PASSED.

Someone might conclude that either Jesus lied or he did not say those things and/or was misquoted. As Muslims, we say Jesus does not lie and therefore he did not say those things attributed to him. The most sensible interpretation is that either Jesus was misquoted or the authors wrote from oral traditions and myths.

The idea of the imminent return of Jesus could be the incorporation of some wishful thinking on the part of early Christians. It is certainly known that the early Christians thought that the second coming would occur before all the original Christians had died; they were certainly misled by the "inspired" scripture. If they were merely wrong in their interpretation, how can we know when any given interpretation is right? Actually, in all likelihood, saying that the early Christians were misled by the Gospel quotations from Jesus is a little like putting the cart before the horse. The Gospels were written many years after Jesus’ death, and do not represent a transcription of dictation given by Jesus, but rather the embodiment of the faith already present among Christians, perhaps inspired by Paul, who, writing to the Corinthians, describes himself and his readers as belonging to the generation of the end of the world:

1 Cor. 10 These things happened to them to serve as an example, and they were written down to instruct us, on whom the ends of the ages have come.

In the following, Paul urges his readers to live as if the end is going to happen, not only within their lifetimes, but a small fraction of a lifetime away.

1 Cor. 7 I mean, brothers and sisters, the appointed time has grown short; from now on, let even those who have wives be as though they had none, and those who mourn as though they were not mourning, and those who rejoice as though they were not rejoicing, and those who buy as though they had no possessions, and those who deal with the world as though they had no dealings with it. For the present form of this world is passing away.

So that in fact, these words attributed to Jesus are a statement of that line of tradition (faith) that already said that the second coming was imminent, and some could expect to see it. (The Pauline letters were written before the Gospels.) So in this case it is not Jesus who was wrong, but Christianity. A good 80 generations has passed, so even if the Second Coming were to happen tomorrow, only 1/81 of the generations following Paul's advice in 1 Cor. 7:29-31 on living one's life with an eye toward the "end" would have been following good advice.

If we would like to speculate in the manner of the Bible fundamentalists, we could say that Jesus died and went off to conquer Satan, planning to return upon completion of his supernatural mission, but that Satan won, so that Jesus couldn't make good on his promise to come back.

In conclusion, since Jesus did not return during the lifetime of his audience as prophesied in the NT we can assume that the Gospels are fakes and they are no more than the words of men and not the word of God as you fundies want us to believe.

You mentioned Chapter 5 Verse 51. Let’s take a look at the context of that verse.

5: 41. O Messenger. let not those grieve thee, who race each other into unbelief: (whether it be) among those who say "We believe" with their lips but whose hearts have no faith; or it be among the Jews,- men who will listen to any lie,- will listen even to others who have never so much as come to thee. They change the words from their (right) times and places: they say, "If ye are given this, take it, but if not, beware!" If any one's trial is intended by God, thou hast no authority in the least for him against God. For such - it is not God’s will to purify their hearts. For them there is disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a heavy punishment.

42. (They are fond of) listening to falsehood, of devouring anything forbidden. If they do come to thee, either judge between them, or decline to interfere. If thou decline, they cannot hurt thee in the least. If thou judge, judge in equity between them. For God loveth those who judge in equity.

43. But why do they come to thee for decision, when they have (their own) Law before them?- therein is the (plain) command of God. Yet even after that, they would turn away. For they are not (really) People of Faith.

44. It was We who revealed the law (to Moses): therein was guidance and light. By its standard have been judged the Jews, by the prophets who bowed (as in Islam) to God’s will, by the rabbis and the doctors of law: for to them was entrusted the protection of God’s book, and they were witnesses thereto: therefore fear not men, but fear me, and sell not my signs for a miserable price. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what God hath revealed, they are (no better than) Unbelievers.

45. We ordained therein for them: "Life for life, eye for eye, nose for nose, ear for ear, tooth for tooth, and wounds equal for equal." But if any one remits the retaliation by way of charity, it is an act of atonement for himself. And if any fail to judge by (the light of) what God hath revealed, they are (No better than) wrong-doers.

46. And in their footsteps We sent Jesus the son of Mary, confirming the Law that had come before him: We sent him the Gospel: therein was guidance and light, and confirmation of the Law that had come before him: a guidance and an admonition to those who fear God.

47. Let the people of the Gospel judge by what God hath revealed therein. If any do fail to judge by (the light of) what God hath revealed, they are (no better than) those who rebel.

48. To thee We sent the Scripture in truth, confirming the scripture that came before it, and guarding it in safety: so judge between them by what God hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, diverging from the Truth that hath come to thee. To each among you have we prescribed a law and an open way. If God had so willed, He would have made you a single people, but (His plan is) to test you in what He hath given you: so strive as in a race in all virtues. The goal of you all is to God. It is He that will show you the truth of the matters in which ye dispute;

49. And this (He commands): Judge thou between them by what God hath revealed, and follow not their vain desires, but beware of them lest they beguile thee from any of that (teaching) which God hath sent down to thee. And if they turn away, be assured that for some of their crime it is God’s purpose to punish them. And truly most men are rebellious.

50. Do they then seek after a judgment of (the days of) ignorance? But who, for a people whose faith is assured, can give better judgment than God.

51. O ye who believe! take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: They are but friends and protectors to each other. And he amongst you that turns to them (for friendship) is of them. Verily God guideth not a people unjust.

52. Those in whose hearts is a disease - thou seest how eagerly they run about amongst them, saying: "We do fear lest a change of fortune bring us disaster." Ah! perhaps God will give (thee) victory, or a decision according to His will. Then will they repent of the thoughts which they secretly harbored in their hearts.

57. O ye who believe! Take not for friends and protectors those who take your religion for a mockery or sport,- whether among those who received the Scripture before you, or among those who reject Faith; but fear ye God, if ye have faith (indeed).

58. When ye proclaim your call to prayer they take it (but) as mockery and sport; that is because they are a people without understanding.

59. Say: "O people of the Book! Do ye disapprove of us for no other reason than that we believe in God, and the revelation that hath come to us and that which came before (us), and (perhaps) that most of you are rebellious and disobedient?"

I think in the context of these verses it is clear that some of the Christians and Jews were hostile and full of contempt for the new small Muslim community. More than anything else, it obviously alludes to a "moral alliance" with the deniers of the truth. There is nothing to preclude normal, friendly relations with non-Muslims who are good to the Muslims. In chapter sixty the that subject is discussed further:

“God forbids you not, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) Faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for God loveth those who are just. God only forbids you, with regard to those who fight you for (your) Faith, and drive you out of your homes, and support (others) in driving you out, from turning to them (for friendship and protection). It is such as turn to them (in these circumstances), that do wrong. 60:8-9.”

You mentioned the alliance between the Christians and the Jews. Nice try but you are off the mark. At the time of Muhammad some Jews and Christians were allies and hostile to the Muslims and wanted but harm for them. That does not mean that the Jews and the Christians were not at odds with each other; the verse only points out that they both shared a common feeling of antagonism and enmity towards the Muslims. By the way, the hatred between the Christians and the Jews is one sided. All through history, it is the Christians who are ruthless and cruel to the Jews. They did not miss any opportunity to slaughter and/or deport the Jews.

I'm sure Muslims would follow Wawa because if they're prepared to trust the word of a man who had sex with a child, had critics assassinated, tied up and beheaded tribes who surrendered to him, raped women, kept slaves, traded in slaves and tortured people for stealing his property, then I'm sure they'd have no trouble believing the word of Wawa.

But then again, maybe Wawa would have to commit some major crimes against humanity and threaten his followers with death if they ever left his cult, before they'd begin to see him as a man sent from god to teach them a new morality.

The koran states very clearly that Jews and Christians are friends and protectors to each other. Are you aware that you are committing blasphemy by arguing that the koran is wrong?

Let me repeat for you, so that you can understand:

Qur’an Chapter 5 Verse 51:
O you who believe! Take not the Jews and the Christians for your friends and protectors: THEY ARE BUT FRIENDS AND PROTECTORS TO EACH OTHER. And he among you that turns to them for friendship is of them.

In arguing that Christians are the enemies of the Jews you are attempting to prove the koran wrong. You are saying that Jews and Christians are NOT friends and protectors to each other. Therefore you are stating and admitting that the koran is wrong.

Like I mentioned before, Hitler was a Christian and thought he was doing the ‘work of the Lord’ by killing the Jews, the Christ and god killers. Christianity is inherently an intolerant, bigoted and anti-Semitic religion. Hitler, in his own mind was being a good Christian. We might argue as to how a good Christian he was but he was a Christian none the less. Hitler’s views of the Jews come directly from Martin Luther, theologian and founder of the protestant church. Now, are you telling me that Luther was not a good Christian? A lot of people would disagree with you. Here is some of what Martin Luther wrote concerning the Jews.

{What then shall we Christians do with this damned, rejected race of Jews? Since they live among us and we know about their lying and blasphemy and cursing, we can not tolerate them if we do not wish to share in their lies, curses, and blasphemy. In this way we cannot quench the inextinguishable fire of divine rage nor convert the Jews. We must prayerfully and reverentially practice a merciful severity. Perhaps we may save a few from the fire and flames [of hell]. We must not seek vengeance. They are surely being punished a thousand times more than we might wish them. Let me give you my honest advice.

First, their synagogues should be set on fire, and whatever does not burn up should be covered or spread over with dirt so that no one may ever be able to see a cinder or stone of it. And this ought to be done for the honor of God and of Christianity in order that God may see that we are Christians, and that we have not wittingly tolerated or approved of such public lying, cursing, and blaspheming of His Son and His Christians.

Secondly, their homes should likewise be broken down and destroyed. For they perpetrate the same things there that they do in their synagogues. For this reason they ought to be put under one roof or in a stable, like gypsies, in order that they may realize that they are not masters in our land, as they boast, but miserable captives, as they complain of incessantly before God with bitter wailing.

Thirdly, they should be deprived of their prayer-books and Talmuds in which such idolatry, lies, cursing, and blasphemy are taught.

Fourthly, their rabbis must be forbidden under threat of death to teach any more...

Fifthly, passport and traveling privileges should be absolutely forbidden to the Jews. For they have no business in the rural districts since they are not nobles, nor officials, nor merchants, nor the like. Let them stay at home...If you princes and nobles do not close the road legally to such exploiters, then some troop ought to ride against them, for they will learn from this pamphlet what the Jews are and how to handle them and that they ought not to be protected. You ought not, you cannot protect them, unless in the eyes of God you want to share all their abomination...

To sum up, dear princes and nobles who have Jews in your domains, if this advice of mine does not suit you, then find a better one so that you and we may all be free of this insufferable devilish burden - the Jews...

Let the government deal with them in this respect, as I have suggested. But whether the government acts or not, let everyone at least be guided by his own conscience and form for himself a definition or image of a Jew. I have read and heard many stories about the Jews which agree with this judgment of Christ, namely, how they have poisoned wells, made assassinations, kidnapped children, as related before. I have heard that one Jew sent another Jew, and this by means of a Christian, a pot of blood, together with a barrel of wine, in which when drunk empty, a dead Jew was found. Even if they were punished in the most gruesome manner that the streets ran with their blood, that their dead would be counted, not in the hundred thousands, but in the millions, as happened under Vespasian in Jerusalem and for evil under Hadrian, still they must insist on being right even if after these 1,500 years they were in misery another 1,500 years, still God must be a liar and they must be correct. In sum, they are the devil's children, damned to Hell...

Suppose a South Pacific Islander named Wawa came along and claimed that Allah has changed his mind and appointed Wawa as the new new final final prophet of Islam.

Suppose this Wawa says the Muslims have distorted their religion and that the Quran has been corrupted and Allah will punish all Muslims for not observing Sabbath.

Suppose Wawa comes up with new scripture that he tells the Muslims that Allah wants obeyed. If not, Allah has permitted Wawa to wage war on the Muslims and kill them, drive them out of their sacred places, take their wives and children slaves, and force them to pay a special tax if they insist on not converting to the new religion called Arakatok, which in South Pacific speak means "obedience".

Suppose Wawa tells Muslims that the name of Allah is not Allah but Geboy and that Muslims must say, "there is no god but Geboy and Wawa is his final final prophet."

What would Muslims do? Will they follow Wawa or think he's nuts?

Most Western academics approach the study of Islam from an ideological perspective of cultural relativism, and this approach frequently blinds them to cultural beliefs which can lead to hatred, separatism and violence.

Such academics and historians tend to acquire their knowledge of Islam through books written by Muslims, instead of studying the sermons given in Mosques around the world, and the source material upon which those sermons are all based - the Qur’an and the Hadith. Islam requires Muslims to defend their faith, therefore the books written by Muslims for non-Muslim consumption typically ignore or misrepresent any facts which might lead to Western objection or criticism. The problem you have is that the hadith records the meaning and context of the koran. I can quote numerous texts from the Islamic hadith which state that hatred of the Jews is a requirement of the koran, and that is why more than 3,000 Imams who use the website above all believe that they are commanded to hate the Jews. You are drawing a long bow here about Hitler and Christianity. Nothing he did was in accordance to the teachings of Jesus Christ. He pandered to the Christians before he got into power and shortly thereafter, as Germans were mostly Christians at the time. But once he consolidated power, he repudiated Christianity. I do not notice any command to hate the Jews anywhere in the aforementioned verses. Maybe you are referring to the statement made by God to those who broke the Sabbath rules by saying “be you apes, despised and rejected.” I think the main thrust of the comment and what should highlighted is ‘despised and rejected’ and not be you apes. The way I read it: be you despised and rejected like apes. I read some comments by other people who understand the phrase literally and assign the meaning that God turned those who transgressed in matters of the Sabbath into apes; that’s silly and simple minded. I don’t agree with that line of thought. By the way, the penalty for breaking the Sabbath rule in the bible is death described in

Exodus 31:15 Six days may work be done; but in the seventh is the Sabbath of rest, holy to the LORD: whosoever doeth any work in the Sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
Now, since we are on that subject let me quote some other verses that might change your mind about accusing Muslims of hatred towards the Jews because of the Quran.

All I read is that some Jews were hypocrites no more and no less. I still don’t see any command to hate the Jews here either. You have to be desperate to list this verse as proof.

It's Muhammad's Dar al-Harb, Dar al-Islam, Dar al-Salam ideology exposing itself once again - the ideology which will lead us all into the next world war, as warned by people including Sir Winston Churchill.

For readers who are wondering what this ideology is all about, it's quite simple. Muslims all believe (because it's central to the faith) that every territory of the world must be converted to Dar al-Islam (land of Islam), because when that happens then dar al-Salam (world of peace) becomes possible for the first time. The only problem is that all territories which are not under Muslim control (dar al-Islam) are designated as dar al-Harb territories (meaning land of war). Muslims are commanded to convert dar al-Harb into dar al-Islam through either emigration to those lands followed by population explosion, or jihad (or both).

The reason that Islam is the fastest growing religion in Europe is because Muslims are following the ideology. There is a much higher birth rate amongst Muslims than there is amongst non-Muslims in Europe, in accordance with the ideology. THE TREATMENT OF JEWS IN ARAB COUNTRIES

Algeria:
The Jewish population of Algeria, dating back 2,500 years, had lived under severe and humiliating dhimmitude status during Islamic rule, until the French colonization of Algeria in 1830. The French liberated the Algerian Jews who quickly rose to prosperity, but the rise of the Nazis in Germany quickly led to a reversal of fortunes for Algerian Jews. Twenty five Jews were massacred in Constantine in 1934. The French authorities concluded that the attack was organised by the city’s Muslim leaders. When the French Vichy government (collaborators with the occupying German Nazis) took power in 1940, it immediately stripped Jews of their French citizenry, banned them from educational establishments and declared them 'pariahs.' It was only the Allied invasion soon after which saved the Algerian Jews from deportation to the European death camps. Following the fall of the Vichy government, 148,000 Jews were again liberated by the French. Civil war erupted in Algeria, and Jews, frightened for their lives, fled mainly to France. By the time Algeria had achieved independence, in 1962, more than 75,000 Jews had left Algeria. In 1963, the Nationality Code restricted Algerian citizenship only to those whose father and paternal grandfather were Muslim. The new government ordered that Synagogues be converted to Mosques and confiscated Jewish businesses, properties and assets. In 1965 a new upsurge in violence against the Jews forced the remaining 65,000 Jews to leave. Today, less than 300 Jews remain in Algeria.

Egypt:
During the Second World War many Muslims living in Egypt believed Hitler would succeed in completing the ‘Final Solution’ in Europe. In support of Hitler’s policies, many thousands of Jews were murdered. In 1947 a new company law was introduced prohibiting the employment of Jews and confiscating Jewish businesses, properties and assets. In 1948 there were approximately 75,000 Jews living in Egypt, whose origins dated back some 2700 years to the Babylonian captivity. During this year, following the passage of the Partition Plan which created the State of Israel, Muslims in Cairo and Alexandria rioted, attacking synagogues and killing hundreds of Jews. In the same year, Egyptian Jews were prevented from leaving the country to fight for Israel during Israel’s War of Independence against the Arabs. The ban on Jewish travel was lifted in August 1949 and thousands of Egyptian Jews fled to Israel. Conditions improved for Jews under General Naguib, then General Abdul Nasser rose to power and ordered mass arrests of Jews. Their property, businesses and assets were confiscated and many thousands were deported, allowed only one suitcase each as they left Egypt. Nasser declared in 1964 that Egypt still supported the German cause. During and after the 1967 Six-Day War between the Arabs and the Israelis, thousands of Egyptian Jews were rounded up and sent to concentration camps where they were denied water, tortured and forced to chant anti-Israel slogans. By 1970, Egypt’s Jewish population had plummeted to just a few hundred (from 75,000 in 1948).

Iraq:
Prior to 1948, Iraq had a community of 135,000 Jews. Today, less than 100 remain. The story echoes the experience of Jews living in other Arab countries. Jews can trace their history back 2,700 years in Iraq, but found themselves living under strict dhimmitude status following the rise of Islam. Iraqi Jews were persecuted during the Second World War, then in 1948 legislation declared ‘Zionism’ (the movement to create a Jewish homeland) a crime punishable with 7 years imprisonment. Legislation banned Jews from many professions and from government positions. Jewish banks were closed and business licences denied or cancelled. The Jewish community faced bankruptcy. Emigration to Israel was made a capital offence during Israel’s War of Independence, and a law was introduced in 1950 stripping Jews of Iraqi nationality. Also in 1950, Israel launched Operation Ali Baba to extricate the remaining Jews from Iraq. The Iraqis allowed the Jews to leave, promising them that they would be compensated for the property and assets they left behind. 123,000 Jews were airlifted out of the country, with the majority settling in Israel. In spite of their promise, Iraq announced on 10th March 1951 that emigrants property, assets, businesses and bank accounts were forfeit without compensation. Hundreds of millions of dollars in Jewish assets were simply stolen by the Iraqi government. In 1952, Iraq closed the doors to Jewish emigration and only 6,000 remained. In 1958 all remaining Jewish communal property was confiscated. Since the Iraq war led by America, virtually all remaining Jews have now left Iraq.

Libya:
The treatment of Jews living in Libya is a similar story to that of Egypt and Algeria. A once thriving Jewish community of 38,000 has entirely disappeared. Between 1941 and 1942 Jewish property was confiscated and 2,600 were sent into harsh labour camps, where 500 perished. On 5th November1945, a horrific slaughter of Jews occurred in the Libyan capital of Tripoli. According to New York Times reporter Clifton Daniels: “Babies were beaten to death with iron bars. Old men were hacked to pieces where they fell. Expectant mothers were disembowelled. Whole families were burned alive in their houses.” Hundreds of Jews died in the attack. Following the UN approval of the Partition Plan and the creation of Israel, another 130 Jews were murdered as Muslims rioted against the Jews in Libya. By 1951, just 8,000 remained. Following the Six-Day War in 1967, more attacks and murders forced all but 400 to flee the country. On 21st July 1967 Colonel Qadhafi nationalized all Jewish property. Shortly after, ALL the remaining Jews fled the country.

Syria:
The Jewish community of Syria dated back some 1900 years. During Islamic rule, Jews lived as second class citizens under strict dhimmitude status. In 1930 there were approximately 33,000 Jews in Syria. By 1947 the numbers had dropped to 13,000 after constant persecution during the Second World War. Syria gained independence from France in 1945, and immediately began broadcasting anti-Semitic propaganda, inciting violence against Jews. One month after the Partition Plan was accepted, violence erupted in the town of Aleppo. Eyewitnesses reported Syrian policemen and firemen participated in the rioting against Jewish synagogues, schools, businesses and properties. In 1948, the government passed legislation restricting Jewish travel to government-approved ghettos, and prevented Jews from selling or purchasing property. In 1949 a decree was issued seizing all Jewish Bank accounts. Between 1948 and 1962, some 10,000 Jews managed to flee from Syria to the United States and to Israel. Today, less than 800 Jews remain.

Yemen:
The Yemenite Jews lived under some of the worst conditions of all Jews who found themselves living under Islamic rule. They were not allowed to testify in court, severely restrictive property ownership rights were imposed upon Jews, and restricted employment opportunities meant that only the most menial jobs were available to Jews. The stoning of Jews was allowed and practiced under Muslim law. Israel’s victory over the Arabs in 1948 led to persecution so severe that mobs rioted through towns and cities, raping and murdering Jewish women and young girls, torturing and killing Jewish men and boys, and destroying Jewish property. The rapid extraction of Jews from Yemen was a matter of saving the Yemenite Jews from extinction. Leaving all their property and possessions behind, the Jews fled to Israel. Within one year Israel airlifted some 50,000 Yemenite Jews. By 1949 virtually the entire ancient community had been rescued and relocated to Israel.

"Death to Israel"
On 30th August 2003 it was reported by various news organisations including the website www.islamonline.net that around 5,000 people in the southern port of Basra marched from the local office of the Supreme Council for the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI) to el-Ebla mosque, chanting: "There is no god but Allah. Death for Israel. Death for Baathis," the marchers also blamed the Americans for their leader's death, Hakim. The point here is that Israel had nothing to do with the invasion of Iraq or the deposing of Sadam Hussein, or the death of Hakim, yet ‘death to Israel’ is part of normal chants and prayers at mosques and funerals throughout the Islamic world.

Genociding the Jews of Medinah is not exactly extending them the hand of friendship, you know. No Jew was left alive in Arabia by the time of Caliph Umar. They were either killed, expelled or forced to convert to Islam.

It so funny and so sad to read how these hillbillies and rednecks labor so hard to defame Islam and Muslims. It’s sad because these people harbor so much hate and bigotry in this day and age and at the same time profess that their religion is based on love and kindness. I can just imagine in the Quran where it says ‘hate the Jews’; it is required of you; where does it say that? Well, they just did not.

THERE IS no evidence whatsoever of any attempt to impose Islam on the Jews. As is well known, under Muslim rule the Jews of Spain enjoyed a bloom the like of which the Jews did not enjoy anywhere else until almost our time. Poets like Yehuda Halevy wrote in Arabic, as did the great Maimonides. In Muslim Spain, Jews were ministers, poets, scientists. What happened afterwards is even more telling. When the Catholics re-conquered Spain from the Muslims, they instituted a reign of religious terror. The Jews and the Muslims were presented with a cruel choice: to become Christians, to be massacred or to leave. And where did the hundreds of thousand of Jews, who refused to abandon their faith, escape? Almost all of them were received with open arms in the Muslim countries. The Sephardi ("Spanish") Jews settled all over the Muslim world, from Morocco in the west to Iraq in the east, from Bulgaria (then part of the Ottoman Empire) in the north to Sudan in the south. Nowhere were they persecuted. They knew nothing like the tortures of the Inquisition, the flames of the auto-da-fe, the pogroms, the terrible mass-expulsions that took place in almost all Christian countries, up to the Holocaust.

WHY? Because Islam expressly prohibited any persecution of the "peoples of the book". In Islamic society, a special place was reserved for Jews and Christians. They did not enjoy completely equal rights, but almost. They had to pay a special poll-tax, but were exempted from military service - a trade-off that was quite welcome to many Jews. It has been said that Muslim rulers frowned upon any attempt to convert Jews to Islam even by gentle persuasion - because it entailed the loss of taxes.

Every honest Jew who knows the history of his people cannot but feel a deep sense of gratitude to Islam, which has protected the Jews for fifty generations, while the Christian world persecuted the Jews and tried many times "by the sword" to get them to abandon their faith.

THE STORY about "spreading the faith by the sword" is an evil legend, one of the myths that grew up in Europe during the great wars against the Muslims - the reconquista of Spain by the Christians, the Crusades and the repulsion of the Turks, who almost conquered Vienna.
