"I believe that Jesus Christ, true God, begotten of the Father in eternity, and also true human being, born of the virgin Mary, is my Lord." Little Martin Marty was brought up on that Catechism affirmation, and old MM is not smart enough to forget it, refute it, or improve on it.
Saying that is not designed to make strangers of others who have different views of "Son of God," or of Jesus.
"Exactly, .. what does it mean?"
Christian thinkers for centuries worked on the subject and never came up with a satisfying answer in the "exactly" category.
I'm content to live with its meanings as mysteries--and care more about testing it in the way people who profess this faith go about living. I'm not great on metaphysics.
