If the remains of Jesus were ever definitively found, Christianity would not be Christianity. It would simply be another moralistic philosophy.
Christianity is Christ! “He (Jesus Christ) is the visible image of the invisible God” (book of Colossians, Chapter 1). Without Christ there is no Christianity.
Therefore, if Jesus Christ is not the one he said he was, and did not live up to what he said he would do, then he is not God the Son. He is an imposter. As a result, the whole edifice of Christianity would collapse. Christianity would not be Christianity. Jesus Christ would not be Jesus Christ. And we would be, to quote the apostle Paul, “of most men, miserable.”
But don’t panic! Jesus Christ’s bones will not be found. He is alive. He rose from the dead. And this Easter morning, we celebrated his resurrection once again.
One day, a reporter from MSNBC called me and asked if God was still alive. The reporter invited me to speak for one half hour on their television program, sharing my thoughts. I accepted. While on the phone, the producer from New York asked me how I would respond to the question.
“Yes, I believe God is alive,” I said to her.
“How do you know?” she asked.
I responded, “Because I talked to him this morning.”
Yes, my view of Christianity would change if those bones were ever found. I would throw my faith overboard, and again to quote Saint Paul, “Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we die.” That’s the end.
But Easter weekend reminds us that this life is not the end of it all! Easter reminds us that Jesus Christ is alive and that he is in Heaven making intercession for his people (book of Hebrews, Chapter 7). Easter reminds me that he lives within my heart (I know it by his Holy Spirit) and that he is coming again any day. He will return in a surprise move – as a thief in the night – arriving unexpectedly to rule the nations.
And best of all, Easter reminds us of the beautiful climax – as Saint Paul tells us once again – when “every knee shall bow and every tongue will confess, that Jesus Christ is Lord!” (book of Romans, Chapter 14).
