Greed: More for Me, Less for Others

Jesus was pointed about greed: “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man’s life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions” (Luke 12:15). The Bible equates greed with idolatry and puts this sin in line with “sexual immorality, impurity, lust and evil desires” (Colossians 3:5).

Spiritually, greed is a sin that worships and serves possessions instead of God.

Practically, greed is always wanting and getting more than we really need, especially at the expense of others. In other words, “I get more; they get less.” And, “I feel good about it.”

True greed is never justifiable. But, it’s an easy sin to commit. The antidote is love for God and love for neighbor. The selfless and generous person seeks satisfaction with less and concern for the needs of others.
