During the second world war I was a boy living in Britain.I remember it well.
I lived in a town with a population of 120,000
and we got our fair share of bombs.
I was a choirboy in the local church,and sometimes pumped the organ.
I swear we usually had more choirboys than worshippers. It was a vast and empty church, hardly anybody ever came.
Religion was rarely mentioned at home or at school.It was a nonissue.
War and the bombing,and the shortage of food and other needed items was what people thought about and most often talked about.
Reality trumped the supernatural as I recall.
When real bombs were falling,it was only reality
that mattered.
I was never in a foxhole.But I was often in air raid shelters with bombs dropping all around.
The grown-ups would sometimes sing and we kids would join in...songs like Roll Out The Barrel,
and You are My Sunshine.
Never any hymns,never talk of god.
Looking back it seems that when reality was really terrifying,religion was revealed for what it is,
unreal and irrelevant.But mostly unreal.

I distrust the idea that women are inherently more peaceful than men. For one thing, it is a bit of a cop-out. In the animal kingdom it is often the females who are more aggressive in defence of their offspring. I think Cindy Sheehan is a good example of the deep passion that a woman can feel against those who threaten her children's safety.
Because women often have fewer opportunities to interact with those who are outside their family circle, they may also be more distrustful, as a group, of those with different lifestyles. The real key to harmony is for all of us to see each other as individuals, so we don't automatically distrust one person (outside our group) and accept any misbehavior or aggression from those who resemble us.
