The answer to the question how does God allow disasters like hurricane Katrina depends on what kind of God we believe in. The question assumes a God living high up above, a Divine Puppeteer or Shepard of sheep who rewards...

Gisborne shakes off earthquake blues to welcome New Year
Wellington - Gisborne in New Zealand, the closest city to the international dateline and therefore the first to welcome 2008, shook off the blues caused by a massive 6.8-strength earthquake that damaged a number of buildings earlier in December with a music festival. More than 15,000 revellers turned out for the annual Rhythm and Vines festival in the port city on the east coast of the North Island which claims to be the first in the world to see the sun.

Sex Scandal Hits Atlanta-Area Megachurch
By DORIE TURNER (AP)

DECATUR, Ga. - The 80-year-old leader of a suburban Atlanta megachurch is at the center of a sex scandal of biblical dimensions: He slept with his brother's wife and fathered a child by her.
Members of Archbishop Earl Paulk's family stood at the pulpit of the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit at Chapel Hill Harvester Church a few Sundays ago and revealed the secret exposed by a recent court-ordered paternity test.

Hi, I found your thoughts thought-provoking, thank you. I have also questioned the static image of God the big hairy white guy, or the Zeus-type lightning hurler in the clouds. If I may humbly suggest a few other metaphors which might describe God in "his" different forms or on different days. Who knows? (Really, who truly knows???).
Doesn't the "God" idea of god imply omnipresence, or beyond that that God IS everything? I see this as another way of saying Mother Nature. Is there really a woman out their controlling the trees and the bears and the bacteria? No? Than perhaps another metaphor for God could be the things that do control everything: the principles of physics and ecology. These are the scientific expressions of the metaphor "Mother Nature" aka "everything that happens to us and the stuff around us". But God is also the reason and the MANNER in which things happen, so perhaps he is also the Way that Taoists speak of. Read the Tao Te Ching; a lot of the images remind me of metaphors for God. So Perhaps God is the Tao (Te in Japanese). So if God is the way everything happens, isn't he everything itself? Doesn't omnipresence (or some other similar term) mean that he IS EVERYTHING? Perhaps another metaphor for God is 'ALL'. Christians have said "the alpha and the omega"--aka the beginning and the end.
So a wrap up from me: God=Mother Nature=Laws of Physics=Principles of Ecology=The Tao/The Way=Everything=The Alpha and the Omega=All. God is everything, has a way, is one unto God's self and everyone at the same time, is everywhy, and everyhow, and everywhen, and everywho.
Thanks for considering my thoughts. What are yours?

Watch and listen to your spiritual fathers. Do not provoke your children into rebellion. For it is tough to have a rebellious child listen to their authorities. They will not listen to you because they reject your ways and they will not listen to Me because they are under a season of difficulties that will cause the whole house to shake in disarrangement. Let Me hear the prayers of change and I will draw them back to Me, says the Lord.
I am about to shake the regions of the Midwest. Watch Me now as I begin to move throughout the Midwest, they will say, Missouri what has happened here? Illinois what has happened here? Even for three, even for five in the south lands.
In the Pacific there shall be some powerful winds that smash into your nation, and it will cause you to think is this the beginning of the winds for a month?

I tell you bring Him back to the schools, bring him back to Washington, and in your homes and work places so that you can experience the true life He brings. A birth of a great revival is on the breakthrough America, full of repentance, sign's and wonders. Be ready."

America will have an abundance of the new energy sources and they will say we must borrow from America, and this will cause your debts in America to go down dramatically! And when the debts that are sky high shall fall to the ground and they will say, "National debt where are you now?" I wonder if God shakes his head in disbelief when people talk of the Katrina disaster. He must be saying to Himself, "Didn't they notice the tsunami that ravaged communities across South and Southeast Asia in 2004?" Well over 200,000 people died in that disaster.
He must also shake his head when people talk about "recovering" from the Virginia Tech shooting. Let's get serious, how do you rank that tragic day in comparison to the daily events of Baghdad or the larger picture of Iraq, North Korea, or Zimbabwe? To name just a few.
Maybe we think that God has His favorites....whites of European descent and the Asians, Arabs, or Africans aren't that important. If we don't have CNN cover the 2004 tsunami as long as the Katrina, then Katrina must be the greater event.
If God has the emotion of disappointment, He must surely be disappointed.
The real tragedy is how His creatures view tragic and what we don't do about it.

I think there may be a little nugget of truth trying to show it's face here. If life were an art museum some would grasp the beauty and come through with insights that words couldn't begin to do justice to. Others would only see paint on canvas and complain that the five bucks charged for admission was a rip off. Is anyone right? Is anyone wrong? I couldn't say for sure, but if anyone tried to kill my buzz I would be sorely tempted to punch them in the nose.

Rabbi Kula,
You write:
"For me, God is a code word for Reality experienced as Unbounded, Spacious, Radiant, Vast, Open, Transparent, a Luminous Clarity in which I am part of a vast seamless system of dynamic, flowing, mutually interpenetrating processes that includes all of us in a radiant sweep, an unqualifiable radically all- inclusive Consciousness of Light, Love, and Life."
This is already too many words to describe what is not describable. Better to be silent in the face of the mystery. "Mystic" and "mute" have the same derivation. Although, of course, you are expected, and are being paid, to fill up the page with words. If you submitted a blank page, On Faith would probably not invite you back.

On God and Suffering
On God. Teachings on God in all religions we can learn are just in the world of words on God. The conceptions on the God are just the subjective-God. So, we must ask our own self, who is the fact of the God, and who is the objective-God? (Call It as the living God.) If we have experienced the living God, we must then ask our own self, is the experience not just our own illusion or even hallucination on the God? We cannot accurately answer the question. Even though we have experienced the illusion (or hallucination) - created God, the experience is forever beyond language (unspoken). The experience is just for us (as individuals). God is forever beyond our own abilities (in Javanese: tan kena kinaya ngapa; so, Javanese are teaching that the difference between both theist and atheist is as thin as a layer of membrane of a seed. Truly, that we are a theist or an atheist? We cannot definitively know). God is a Mystery (beyond language). In the context, Gautama Buddha forever comments the interpretation of Ananda, 'Neti, neti, neti, O Ananda' ('Not the like, I have spoken, O Ananda'. It is meaning that the spoken of Buddha is distorted spoken, so cannot be literally understood, but we must be able to catch the essence of the spoken. And, we will not be able to speak the caught essence in language). In the context, Lao-tse says, 'Who speaks, knows nothing; who knows, speaks nothing'.
On Suffering. In an American-written book (1970s early) I have read a sentence this like, ‘If you want to be beauty, you must be experiencing the suffering’. So, the suffering is a drug (medicine) for transforming us to be an ethically beauty individual (a good or altruistic one). According to Dualism (including Hinduism, Mahayana Buddhism, Judaism, Christianism, and Islam), God is creating the Being (including human beings) in the flowing Eternity. God is treating the human beings with suffering, so the human beings will be transforming to be ethically better and better, from generation to generation. According to Monism (including Hinayana Buddhism, and Sufism or Mysticism), the Being is a spontaneously existing (timelessness) together with the God; as the light and its own bright. Al Faraby (a philosopher of Monism) teaches that the Being is the efficient cause of the God. In the context, Buddha teaches that suffering is a natural trait of individual human beings. According to Buddha, the Being (including human beings) is structured by a troika of emptiness, temporary, and suffering. So, human beings cannot escape from the suffering. Matur nuwun. God can work through disasters, fire from the sky, etc, shocking people into righteousness, or by other means. The means of God, however, are our own choice.
Good and evil are tools that we give in God's hand, as instruments of our own future salvation.
How do we give such tools in his hand? If disasters is what it takes to make us righteous, than we will have disasters. If a "small voice" would makes us righteous, than God will be a small voice.
(Best illustrated by Elia's 'small voice' story in the Bible)

>>>Bla Bla Bla....if God is undefinable- it seems
we are just wasting our time discussing it.
That's how we get the license number of the truck that ran us over.
God is infinite, by definition. The infinite may not be defined or even imagined. Devil is NOT infinite, by definition. Giving God any dimension is a violation of the first commandment because any dimension-possible God is not infinite God and most likely devil. Saying God is a "HE" is a violation of the first commandment. The first commandment is the most violated of all the commandments.
God has almighty power, the power to make something from nothing, create. Thus God does not need man to get what God wants. What God wants happens as a matter of God wanting it, the universe for an easy example.
Devil does not have almighty power but does have power. Devil gets his power from people, 9-11 for example. Violators of the first commandment use the false notion that God wills their actions when in reality they serve devil.
Check out BEGONE's web site. Should make you think and perhaps understand just how fragile the world situation is brought about by worshiping devil calling him, (OK to say devil is male) God.
No group has suffered more from devil worship than_____________.

Bla Bla Bla....if God is undefinable- it seems
we are just wasting our time discussing it.

Anonymous, you wrote: "Letting go all one's ideas about God is demanded by the first commandment. Makes it impossible to visualize God and thus pray to God. Therefore, all prayers are to devil, not to belittle the power of devil. Whatever works. Lots of room in hell."
I have a bit of trouble understanding what you have written here--that is, your precise point. Perhaps you could clarify.
And I will clarify my point. When I say letting go of my ideas of God, it is not to say I have substituted something else, or that my prayers and communion with God are just random and undirected, or worse, in the service of Satan or any other figure. It is to say that I do not make the assumption that I know the full dimensions or intentions of God, or know the will of God nor can speak for God, nor can confine or define God in certain measures that are subject to my human interpretations alone, as if I would be free from error. Rather it is to say that God is bigger than my ideas about Him.

I recently read something about God that has changed and deepened my relationship to God. It said, and I am paraphrasing here, "To really know God, let go of all your ideas about God." I found that God grew exponentially with that shift, making for a pretty big God.

Steve W: That good warm feeling religion brings on could be from the fires of hell.
Are those among us who hear voices from the sky, see lights where there are none, get that good warm born again feeling being contacted by God or Devil? Could they actually just be insane? One rotten apple leads the whole barrel to hell.

Rabbi:
You said, "The answer to the question how does God allow disasters like hurricane Katrina depends on what kind of God we believe in." I agree.
http://www.hoax-buster.org/sellyoursoul seems to have a fairly good handle of "what kind of God we believe in."
Perhaps a reexamination of the first commandment is in order? I don't think it leaves much wiggle room for "strange Gods" the type that bring disasters.
Do we have a failure to recognize Devil? Are we calling Devil, the biggest one of them all, Lucifer who would be God, are we calling Him God?
Calling Devil God does not make Devil God but surely makes Devil happy. Praying to the being that Moses made the deal with doesn't seem to calm things and especially natural acts like Katrina. Could that hoax buster fellow be onto something big or is he just another atheists that don't even believe in Devil?

I've experienced these transcendental moments myself as a Christian. Many people from many different faiths have also.
Religion stems from personal experience.

Norrie:
"But, Rabbi Kula, what you are calling "God" bears no resemblance to what anyone else calls "God""
Funny, ennit?
On another thread, we Pagans are supposed to defend ourselves against the *very idea* that we 'hate' what this Rabbi calls 'God.'
You betcha Binah we don't. ;)
Ready alliteration aside, Norrie:
People that do-hurt-in-the-name-of 'God' *do* have a small idea of what-to-do-about-That-Big-Perception.
Not like a Jewish person never did me harm, but, also, ...People that became my family when I was on the run once, ...they knew stuff like this author speaks without even saying it.
Christians got a way of telling Christian kids what Jews believe, and how.
It's not necessarily-so.
If Christians want to base their rpresumed authority on Judaism, they ought to listen to a guy like this, first.
Actual Rabbi or something. Who knew.

But, Rabbi Kula, what you are calling "God" bears no resemblance to what anyone else calls "God".
You are taking an internal feeling-state of yours and calling it "God". Everybody else's "God" is a being with intentions and powers.
As for the possible existence of a "God" (anybody's "God", of whatever nature): let's have resort to Occam's Razor, popularly condensed to the saying, "If you hear hooves, think of horses, not zebras".
When considering the likelihood of the existence of "God', you don't even need to resort to Occam's Razor.
If you hear divine hooves, you're delusional.
Regards.
