For Mormons, America is literally a promised land where Christ once appeared and where he will return. American optimism finds expression in the Mormon belief that we can “eternally progress” in the afterlife to become more like God.

With The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints now being reported to be the 4th largest religion in the U.S., it should be no surprise that there are many Americans interested in news of the passing of its church president and prophet, Gordon B. Hinckley.
Whether 'Mormon' or not, many Americans have friends or work acquaintances who are members of this faith. They may be interested in knowing about an event that affects those friends in a very personal way.
As the LDS Church continues to grow world-wide, its influence is felt through its humanitarian service, pro-family stance and strong Christian values. Paying attention to who the leader of this organization will be is important.
Thank you for your coverage and commentary of this event. And yes, the next church president will indeed matter, as he will lead more than 13 million members worldwide.

Cindy McCain suffered a near-fatal stroke[21] in April 2004 due to high blood pressure,[25] but after several months of physical therapy to overcome her leg and arm limitations made a mostly full recovery, although
she still suffers from some short-term memory loss and difficulties in writing.[21]
She has been active and visible in her husband's presidential campaign during 2007 and 2008,[7] including making statements critical of the Bush administration for not deploying enough troops during the Iraq War...

Before John McCain's tour of duty in Vietnam, he married Carol Shepp, a model from Philadelphia. On his 23rd bombing mission over North Vietnam in 1967, McCain was shot down and captured.
While he was imprisoned, Carol was in an auto wreck (1969), thrown through her car's windshield and left seriously injured. Despite her injures, she refused to allow her POW husband to be notified about her condition, fearing that such news would not be good for him while he was being held prisoner.
When McCain returned to the United States in 1973 after more than five years as a prisoner of war, he found his wife was a different person. The accident "left her 4 inches shorter and on crutches, and she had gained a good deal of weight."

While still married to Carol, McCain began an adulterous relationship with Cindy. He married Cindy in May 1980 -- just a month after dumping Carol and securing a divorce. The newlyweds honeymooned in Hawaii.
McCain followed his young, millionairess wife back to Arizona where her father helped catapult McCain into politics,
Today, Cindy Hensley McCain is chairwoman of Hensley's board of directors. Hensley and Company financial reports show assets worth a minimum of $28 million for the McCains

In his book, The Nightingale's Song, Robert Timberg chronicled McCain's post-Vietnam military assignments and some of his "adulterous" behavior leading to his divorce from Carol and marriage to Cindy Hensley.
Timberg wrote, "in the fall of 1974, McCain was transferred to Jacksonville as the executive officer of Replacement Air Group 174, the long-sought flying billet at last a reality. A few months later, he assumed command of the RAG, which trained pilots and crews for carrier deployments. The assignment was controversial, some calling it favoritism, a sop to the famous son of a famous father and grandfather [both were Navy admirals], since he had not first commanded a squadron, the usual career path."

ORIGINAL McCAIN POST:
Hensley met John McCain in 1979 at a military reception in Hawaii.[9] He was the U.S. Navy liaison officer to the United States Senate, eighteen years her senior,[1] and in a somewhat troubled marriage to his first wife, Carol.[14] McCain and Hensley quickly fell in love;[1] he divorced Carol in April 1980.
CHANGED new McCAIN as of changing it via "Word Merchandizing" Post:
In 1979, while attending a military reception in Hawaii, McCain met and fell in love with Cindy Lou Hensley, 17 years his junior, a teacher from Phoenix, Arizona who was the daughter of James Willis Hensley, a wealthy Anheuser-Busch distributor and wife Marguerite Smith.[54] By now it was clear that McCain's naval career was stalled; he would never be promoted to admiral as his grandfather and father had been.[52] McCain filed for and obtained an uncontested divorce from his wife Carol in Florida on April 2, 1980;[23] he gave her a generous settlement, including houses in Virginia and Florida and financial support for her ongoing medical treatments, and they would remain on good terms.[54] McCain and Hensley were married on May 17, 1980[17] in Phoenix, Arizona, with Senators William Cohen and Gary Hart as best man and groomsman..."

There's a big difference between Utah Mormons and Mormons in the rest of the world. Not being a majority, Mormons in the rest of the world are more accepting, if not more tolerant of others. The assimilate in their world even if they aren't of it. Without the theocratic power of a strong majority, they are was less ethnocentric and bigoted.
With that said, Romney displays himself as a Utah Mormon - intolerant of anything and anyone different. He learned the tactic of demonizing Mexicans to rally the mindless masses around a common enemy from Ezra Taft Benson who spent his years as Church President demonizing and calling anything that he didn't like or agree with as a "Godless Communist" Let's hope the new Mormon President teaches his flock in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming more of the love a Christ and less of neochristian exclusion. Hinckley started the job, to some extent, but like the arrogant Pope Benedict, Mormons and their leaders have a long way to go.

The United Methodist Church
The United Methodists commonly incorporate the Apostles' Creed into their worship services. The version which is most often used is located at #881 in the United Methodist Hymnal, one of their most popular hymnals and one with a heritage to John Wesley, founder of Methodism [6][7]. It is notable for omitting the line "he descended into hell", but is otherwise very similar to the Book of Common Prayer version. The 1989 Hymnal has both the traditional version and the 1988 ecumenical version (see below), which includes "he descended to the dead."
I believe in God the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth;
And in Jesus Christ his only Son our Lord:
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, dead, and buried;
the third day he rose from the dead;
[He descended into hell.]<----------(REMOVED)
he ascended into heaven,
and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty;
from thence he shall come to judge the quick and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.

The Lutheran Church
The text of the Apostles' Creed used by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, a major Lutheran religious denomination:
I believe in God, the Father Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth.
And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died and was buried.
He descended into hell.<------------XXXXXXXXX
The third day He rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty.
From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy Christian[4] Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.[5]

The Roman Catholic Church
The English version in the Catechism of the Catholic Church[5] maintains the traditional division of the Creed into twelve articles, presenting it as follows:
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
and in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
who was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit
born of the Virgin Mary.
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried.
He descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again from the dead.
He ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand
of God the Father Almighty.
From thence he shall come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting.
Amen.

You said, "Gordon B. Hinckley...“the prophet, seer, and revelator”...entrusted by God with a prophetic authority"
Everything is fine until you use the word God. I'm sure you mean the talking creature that lives in a ball of fire, the one Moses made the deal with to beat the murder charge, (kinda like OJ).
http://www.hoax-buster.org/sellyoursoul identifies the supernatural being in the burning bush, the one you mean when you say God. He was Lucifer, the angel that would be God and not God.
The big money goes to those who lead the multitudes to the house of the father of Jesus. Jesus was fathered by the being in the burning bush. That's a clue about the location of the house of the father of Jesus, a place called hell.
Here's another clue. While Jesus hung on the cross He turned to the 'good thief' and said, "this day you will be with Me in paradise." Then the Bible says that Jesus descended into hell upon his death on the cross.
Yep, that was Lucifer in that burning bush alright. He must be 'the God' that lives at the Mormon Tabernacle, huh?
How close is the Mormon president to par with the pope getting as much money, wealth, power, respect etc that springs from being the head leader of those leading the multitudes to hell? Doing the bidding for the Devil Lucifer pays well.
The papacy got a bonanza of gold when the Conquistadors robbed native Americans. Is that why Mormons are so focused on Latin America? Too late. Latin American gold's all gone. The pope got it. And he ain't about to give it back.
Stolen money/gold becomes un-stolen after a long enough time. Besides, that gold is being used to make the sacred vessels used to hold the body and blood of Jesus. That gold was morally gained applying the God given law, "by right of conquest" just like lies that cause people to believe in God are moral.

Well, I hope that all works out well... Mormons may be expanding, but perhaps for them, some new leadership can help them get past some of the 'big-church' problems they've got, like darn-near-institutionalized abuse, money, politics, and expansionism where and in ways they aren't wanted.
They really aren't any different than any other Fundamentalist Christian sect, to me, save that their peculiarities make them a bit less able to be dittoheads about certain forms of Christian supremacy, ...not that they don't indulge and celebrate their won form of it.
Certainly, with a Romney candidacy, this whole thing could prove important: Romney, of course, is just the grinning plastic pressed-suit form of Mormonism that seems to come door to door all over America, and, increasingly, the world.
Frankly, the fact that his religious radicalism is increasingly couched in Religious Right terms, yet unquestionable, due to his status in a minority Christian sect, ...worries me, since he played his minority status for some sympathy, with some promises to leave Massachusetts' civil liberties alone... until the GOP courted him, at which point he fell into line with what he probably wanted to do anyway.... Well, that worries me.
He's already claimed moderation in the form of promises he betrayed, and on that basis I don't trust him. If not for his scads of money and polished family PR, I'd say, Hey, at least maybe he knows how it feels to be accused of being 'allied with Satan' in some unjust way, but, then again, the Mormons, too, say that about the likes of me.
