As I deal with the fallout of my own divorce and the divorces of others, I see only too clearly, the fact that both sides feel that they were treated unfairly. Like you, I sense that there are too few family members, who attempt reconciliation after experiencing deep hurt. Most people do not have the strength of character or the desire, to attempt to respect or forgive the other or face their own faults. I agree that Nelson Mandela had a "super human" ability to embrace his captors, in order to make a positive situation out of a negative one. I am not sure that that the psychologists and psychiatrists do not focus on the processes that accompany reconciliations. I just think that, many of them do not have the capability or the desire to delve into the real problem. I have become acutely aware that the people, who harbor hatred and have the inability to “move on,” are the same ones that still love the perpetrator and hold hope that they might still be loved. For whatever reason, they feel trapped by the person, they feel is responsible for their pain. “Forgiveness and peace” come from, and are experienced by, people who live their lives with faith and the desire to do what is right. I am confident in my impression that much of the continuing problem, is in direct proportion to the lessons that we were taught, when we were young.

Thank you for the insightful piece on reconciliation and the intended plan of psychiatrists to extend it to conflicts at the national level. When a working protocol for reconciliation at national level is established, it would be incredible breakthrough indeed! Every nation after all has some conflict or the other that is nursed for centuries, costing innocent civilians lives; nations and members of ethnic groups caught up in cycles of violence and revenge with no time and opportunity to build their nations or engage in other constructive activities, children living in constant fear, eaten with hatred that is passed on from their parents.

As an Indian woman I look forward to peaceful relations between Hindus and Muslims in areas where conflict has reemerged in the recent past. As an Australian citizen, I wish for the native Australian Aboriginals to be able to move forward and develop their highest potential.

The all time record for reconciliation was at the end of the war with Japan. Some, most even thought the Japanese had just been beaten to a pulp and gave up. No way.
